SCSI termination utility

Does anybody recall? It seems to me there was a utility program which would provide information on the monitor about the termination status of any attached SCSI devices, so one didn't have to visually inspect the device for its termination status. I thought I had the program, too, but not having had an occasion for years to need it, I don't know if I'm mistaken or if I just can't find the program I need. Thanks.

HELP How to rescue data from a HD with only the Terminal utility working

I can no longer access the hard disk on a 2008 unibody Mac Book after an failed OS upgrade (?). Running the original OS 10.5.5 from the grey CD-ROM that came with the device and using the "Terminal" utility, I find all data in their place and within the correct structure.
I tried to make an image of the HD or to copy the files to the external disc using the Hard Disk utility, but all attempts have produced an "operation not possible" message. Target mode will not work, as the device has no firewire connection implemented.
How can I access the files (I know they are there, I can see them...) and e. g. copy them to an external disc or rescue them with an other method?
PLEASE HELP ME

PS Please don't tell me that experienced users will always have backups of their files: It is my wife's device and that's exactly what I have been telling her for years. Still, it's my wife...

Click here and choose 10.5 from the menu for usage instructions. Installing the OS on an external drive is done the same way as doing it on the internal drive, but it needs to be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

You can't get it separately. You will have to re-Install Mac OS X. Luckily, it is not difficult or destructive.
But .. how do you think you might have come to lose Terminal?
EDIT: I see Niel has suggested you can extract if from your 10.6 DVD. That is doable.
If extracting and Installing it with Pacifist gets too complicated, a re-Install may be easier.

1. Open Terminal (in Applications, Utilities).
2. Copy and paste the following command into theTerminal window (or type it exactly as follows):
sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash/*
3. Press Return.
4. Type in your password when asked (note: you will not see anything being entered as you type your password).
5. Hit Return.
6.Wait until the process finishes/the Terminal prompt returns.
7. Quit Terminal.

I am getting a warning sign related to console and a terminal box with _ both in my dock. There seems to be a log associated with this veing taken in fractions of a second. I don't understand what is going on. Can anyone help?

So far, you have described the standard Dock symbols for Console utility and Terminal Utility.
If you did not deliberately add them to the Dock, something you did seems to have opened these two Applications so that their icons are showing on the Dock.
That may be perplexing, but is not a cause for alarm.

How to set system time from Terminal while booted from 10.6.3 server install disk?

I'm installing from a 10.6.3 server install disc onto a Mac Mini. However, the battery on this Mac Mini is pretty much dead, forcing the system time back to 1/1/2001. Through some research, this has created a problem in that I cannot move beyond the Welcome screen during setup of OS X server. It looks like the binary has issues with the system time being older.
But I'm stuck in that I don't know how to adjust the system time from the Terminal Utility on the boot CD. Can anyone help?

Hey, i just run in to something similar, tonight while trying to fix a computer.
The user set the time and date on his computer to 1998 and computer locked everything including time and date in system preferences, and his user account basicly making him from administrator to guest. he could not almost any program properly that required administrator privilages.
to fix this we used this comand in terminal " sudo date 201703162014 " todays time and date

ps: when you type sudo in terminal it whil give you a warning the improper use of this command is bad.... click continue.otherwhise you will not be able to execute the command.

External Hard Disk not accessible in Finder, but OK in Disk Utility

My external hard drive suddenly disappeared from Finder, but is still there for the disk utility. I connected this Firewire drive to anouther Mac, and it couldn't find it either. I then copied a disk image of this external drive the system hard drive, and that disk image is also invisible. How do I get back my 89 gigabytes of data, which is still there? The disk needed no repairs, and my permissions on the system disk are OK.

Well, I got the terminal utility to work alright, but the disk name, Extra 80 GB, which the program correctly lists, then won't work with the chown command. It picks up the Extra, then the 80, then the GB, and thinks they are all separate names, and then can't find any of them.
I thought I was there .........

Terminal returning "permission denied"

I am trying to use the Terminal Utility on my macbook to locate all of my music files because I think they are in various folders and want to get everything into one place.
I was told to use sudo /usr/libexec/locate.updatedb, but then it asks for my password and when I put it in it returns this:

forget about terminal. In the Finder, open a window to your home folder, type command-F to get a search window, then set the pull down menus to say 'kind', 'Music', 'mp3'. This will show all the music files anywhere in your home folder, and you can select all and drag them to whatever folder you like.
I'm not sure you really want to do this, though. Putting all your music files in one folder is a huge mess - better to let iTunes organize them in folders for you.

Can anyone help with Terminal not working properly on 2013 (late) mac pro?

New 2013 (late) mac pro. 10.9.2 osx
Using Terminal utility and giving "cat" command, I get a return message of "file or directory not found" even though the files are right there. This is a little procedure I have performed with older mac pro and laptops (also Mavericks) and never had a problem.

I'm logged in as the administrator on my Power Mac G4 running 10.4.6. When I open Terminal and type "sudo SystemStarter" I'm asked for my password. After I enter the latter...Terminal just goes back to its start screen, i.e. "%". It won't let me enter any of the commands for SystemStarter.
The Man pages for SystemStarter don't offer much help.
Would appreciate any thoughts. Thanks in advance.

What I want is to use whatever Terminal utility is most relevant in 10.4.6 to troubleshoot my computer's startup routine. My computer suffers from occasional stalls, kernel panics, and slowness. One Mac manual which I'll leave unnamed says that SystemStartup is the most useful utility in this regard. I'd like to see a text message about possible problematic items during startup.
If I'm completely wrong about SystemStartup I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts about the best way forward. Thank you in advance. - Mark

Dual SCSI pci adaptor not recognised by solaris 9

I have Solaris 9 O/S installed on an enterprise 220, I also have a dual scsi adaptor installed with a Storedge D1000 connected to it, however when I do a touch /reconfigure with init 0 or boot -r or a probe-scsi-all the O/S only sees the 2 internal disks. How do i get the system to recognise the scsi card and the attached D1000 ??? IM going banannas here please help!!

Still the solaris box doesnt recognise the scsi adaptorprobe-scsi-all should display the hba. Remove the external cable. Re-issue a probe-scsi-all. The controller should be displayed without attached devices (no devices found). If not, check at the ok-prompt if the pci slot (that contains the hba) has been excluded from probing (these are the variables like pcia-probe-list or pcib-probe-list). Compare the current setting with the default.
These are the settings from the E220R Service Manual (Part-No. 806-1081-10, page 197)

Use either the eeprom command at the os-level or printenv at the ok-prompt.
The thing that has me a little confused is that the terminator is saying that it is LVD and
not HVD which i would assume it would be.It's the wrong terminator (SE or LVD doesn't work) ! According to the Sun System Handbook's D1000/A1000 full components list the correct terminator is Part-No. 150-1890, Differential SCSI Terminator, HD68.
Have you tried to reseat the hba ?

We are trying to use a "development" environment on a server to work on a web site reconstruct under our domain while leaving the current site live. Our provider advises resolving the domain name by changing something in the Terminal window:

External SCSI HD setup problems - HELP

Hello out there in cyberland (especially T.B) --
I have had GREAT success in the past getting help on this forum (i.e. T.B.).
I have installed an Adeptec Ultra PowerDomain 2930 SCSI controller card in a PCI slot in a G4 MDD computer running OS X 10.4.11.
The controller card was purchased new and contained a CD that was supposed to assist in getting the external HD "up and running."
Even though Adaptec says this particular card and software will run on this computer and the OS contains an extension (Adeptec 290x-2930.kext) for the controller I have been unsuccessful in getting the HD operational.
The Adaptec card shows up in the System Profiler but the HD does NOT show up anywhere. I think (?) the HD should show up in the Parallel SCSI portion of the System Profiler. I turn on the HD BEFORE starting the computer and have checked the HD SCSI termination and cable setup. I have the HD SCSI ID# set to 0.
The SCSIProbe (v. 5.1.1) and PowerDomain Control (v. 5.0) located on the packaged CD both open a window stating they will not work with "Classic."
I have downloaded SCSIProbe v. 5.2 from the Adaptec site and it opens the same window. There is mention of a SCSIProbe v. 5.1.2 in the Adaptec help discussions but I was unable to find it on their site to download it.
Adaptec would not answer my written (email) calls for help or even whether or not the card will work under OS X. However, their specifications state the system will work as I have it configured.
I would appreciate any help that you folks are willing to provide.

The Adaptec software you mention is only for OS8.6-9.2, not for OSX. Do you have Jaguar or Panther also installed on the same machine? If so, if you boot into Jaguar, do you see the HD in Apple System Profiler? Have you tried setting the HD SCSI id to something other than 0?
I recently had a similar issue w/an Adaptec 29160 and an HP tape drive. Everything worked fine in Jaguar. The Adaptec card not only showed up in Apple System Profile (ASP) in Jaguar (10.2.8), but the specific version of the firmware and driver were reported correctly. The same card in Panther (10.3.9) also showed up in ASP, but the firmware and driver version nos. were not reported correctly, but rather just binary addresses were displayed. Under Tiger the same card also only showed these binary addresses in ASP for the Adaptec card's firmware and driver version nos. The backup software did not work though under Tiger. I had to swap the Adaptec card for an ATTO SCSI card. Then the backup to the HP tape drive worked again.
I'd look to see if the SCSI HD you have has drivers specifically written for Tiger and see if installing them will result in the HD being detected.

DAT Drive not registering on sunfire V240

Hi,
I have 9 SUN v240 with which i connected the same DAT drive HP 72GB DDS DAT (PART NUMBER C7439). In six servers
did devfsadm and it registered the DAT. It worked fine but in three of the SUN v240, this command doesnt seem to
do anything. /dev/rmt is not created. I cannot restart the server because they are live/production servers. Is there
any other solution to get this DAT recognised in solaris with out a reboot. Also, i cannot go to OBP (OK prompt) because
ofcourse it needs a reboot.
I checked the st.conf file and the entries of these file are the same in all 9 v240. So i think its not a problem of
st.conf.
Eargerly waiting for a solution.

Sorry Simon, but I had to jump in on that.
You are correct that they'll need to probe from OBP, however...
jumping down from an active OS will leave much in various bus registers and they'll lock up the entire system when a probe is done that way. They'll have to power-cycle the chassis to recover.

When you have the chance for testing this system, bring the chassis down to the OBP level. ( init 0 is acceptable ) then do:
OK setenv auto-boot? false <enter>
OK reset-all <enter>
The chassis will cycle and automatically stop at the OK prompt, with empty bus registers, and you can probe all you wish.
The peripheral MUST be seen at the hardware level before an OS can dream of manipulating it.
But, if I may ask...
You attached the tape peripheral to where?
(the integrated onboard SCSI connector or to an add-on card?)
Is it a Single-Ended SCSI device, a HVD SCSI device, or a LVD SCSI device?
If your cable is attached to an appropriate add-on card, do you need to install any packages for that card?
