Sculpture CPU hungry?

I'm thinking of upgrading to the studio version just to get Sculpture. But from what I hear Sculpture is CPU hungry.
So how does Logic perform if there are multiple Structure tracks in a project? Does it crash or get really slow?

Hi,
On my machine (see sig) I can play max four (polyphonic) simultaneously, without any other plugin active. logic does not slow down, though both my processors are 100% busy. Logic has never crashed because it was overloaded. It simply stops playback when it overloads, and that simple principle works just fine.
The graphics in Logic do become unresponsive on my machine, when both processors are that busy. However, the 'freeze tracks' function can come to the rescue; it reduces the tracks load on the CPU to near zero.
But anyway, 4 instances on my G4 would equate to about 12 to 16 instances on your iMac (depending on speed). To have that many Sculptures in one piece sounds odd, a bit like a rockband with ten guitarists. But, to answer your question, yes, it is CPU hungry, compared to most other Logic Instruments. Although the EVOC can be a guzzler too. But your iMac will manage, as long as you manage your iMac.
regards, Erik.

  • PS CS3 CPU hungry

I am using Photoshop CS3 under Snow Leopard 10.6.4. PS is fully updated. For the first time PS is causing the fan on my MacBook Pro 4GB RAM to really speed up - and that's just because I'm working with an 8 MB PSD document. As soon as I stop using any of the tools from the palette the fan slows down.
Checking the activity monitor when the fan hits in it reads PS between 45-70 percent on CPU-usage. It has got to be something fundamentally wrong with PS CS3 here. If my memory serves me right I recall someone from the PS-crew saying that CS3 will run without problems under Snow Leopard, with no known issues. Well, this is an issue I believe.
Anybody else experiencing this type of problem? Feedback on this would be appreciated. Thanks!
PS! I am not going to upgrade to CS5 Design Premium as I believe Adobe releases major expensive upgrades way to fast. So don't bother mentioning that.

    Hi, Cris!
What changed on your system (outside of Photoshop) around that time?  Updates?  New software?  Changed settings?
Only regular stuff: most of them only updates for browsers, antivirus, firewall etc ... nothing related to photoshop
Did you change anything inside Photoshop (showing different palettes, change in prefs)?  Especially check Photoshop's prefs for how much memory you allocated to it.
I kept my performance prefs exactly like 2-3 days ago when photoshop worked good and smooth.
What you're describing could be a video driver problem, or just VM thrashing (by the OS or Photoshop's scratch disk).  But it's also possible it's due to some other factor inside Photoshop that didn't get included in your description.
I have the last version of nVidia driver (installed 2 months ago) for video card.

  • Is 64-Bit Logic more CPU hungry?

The project I'm currently working on keeps running into low memory areas. So I switched Logic into 64 bit mode and reloaded the file.
Now - no memory alerts, just giant CPU spikes and stuttering, clicks, etc. When run in 32 bit mode, this song hits around the 75% mark on only 2 of the 4 cores.
Is it normal that running in 64 bit requires more horsepower?

Is it normal that running in 64 bit requires more horsepower?
no. in general, 64 bit apps are not slower than their 32 bit counterparts. '64 bit is a little bit faster' is the average case, but it can go both ways. 64 bit requires more memory io, but 64 bit architectures typically utilize more modern capabilities of the CPU, and they have more registers at their disposal.
64 bit will consume more memory (RAM). if you don't have much free memory, then you'll miss deadlines in playback. this is one possible explanation.
if your plugs are 32 bit only (and therefore bridged to then from a 32 bit process), you will have more overhead compared to the 32 bit version because that transfer requires a bit of work.

  • 10.5.0.142 upgrade now itunes services using 100% cpu

My itunes has updated a couple of days back and since then I've been unable to synch my iphone 4 AND more importantly my laptop is running really slow. I checked and AppleMobileDeviceService.exe is utilising 50% of cpu. Even without itunes open! If I launch Itunes then I'm up to 100% and my laptop becomes unuseable. I've tried reinstalling to previous versions of itunes but because the libarry has been upgraded to 10.5 previous versions of Itunes wont work with my library.
I can terminate the cpu hungry process and gain control of my laptop but now I can't synch my iphone and working with itunes is very slow.
Clearly something's not right and it all appears to have happened as a result of the last update.
Interestingly, when I retroinstalled previous versions of Itunes AppleMobileDeviceService.exe did not appear to be present or if it was it was using so little resource it wasn't showing on the listings of services that were using resource.
My laptop is Windows 7 SP1 with latest updates applied.
Similar problems seem to be plaguing alot of users since the end of September???
This looks like and Apple issue?
Anyone had this as well and resolved it?

Fixed. Downgraded to 10.4.0.8 with clean 10.4.0.8 library.
Lost my music content which I'm happy to rip again but many wouldn't.
    Iphone synching perfectly.
CPU utilisation with iTunes and applemobiledeviceservice.exe running below 10%
    BINGO!
So there we have it, 10.4.0.8 is perfectly fit for purpose.
So what conclusions do we draw from this exercise relating to the 10.5 upgrade to iTunes and the over 11,000 views of similar problems on this forum?

  • X suddenly started using a lot of CPU (KDE 4.5)

I've been observing this weird issue since few days ago. When some more intensive drawing occurs on the screen (like scrolling through a web page, moving larger windows), KSysGuard shows both of my CPU's to be running at about 50% load. I use only few compositing effects in KWin and even if I disable compositing altogether the CPU usage won't drop.
There is another interesting issue regarding X I've noticed, possibly related. When playing a H264 encoded movie in MPlayer using VDPAU, X uses only few CPU ticks when compositing is disabled. When I enable compositing, X spikes up to about 70%.
I've been using KDE 4.5.0 since it hit testing, so it can't be caused by the update of KDE. KWIn itself doesn't seem to be using any extra CPU ticks, it's just the X which is problematic.
I'm kind of concerned because X definitely wasn't that CPU hungry only few days ago. I was running xorg-server 1.8 and nVidia 256.44 drivers and I updated to xorg-server 1.9 and nVidia 256.52-beta to see if it helps, it didn't:) I'm running custom kernel 2.6.35.4 with ck patchpack and the "desktop responsiveness patch". CPU is C2D T9550 2.66GHz, 4GB RAM and nVidia 9800M GTS.
    Thanx for advices...

Xorg 1.9 is in testing. You should expect weird behavior if you enable [testing]

  • ITunes 11 CPU keeps peaking at 100%

Most operations in iTunes are resulting in CPU peaks of 100%. This makes iTunes agonisingly slow to use. Can anyone suggest any adjustments to make it less CPU-hungry?

I was having the same problem.  I have a brand new Macbook Pro Retina 15" 2.4GHz i7. I called support 3 times to try and work it out.  We tried re-installing iTunes and a host of other things. It came down to there being a problem with the library.  I had imported it from an earlier version of iTunes from an older mac  (Where it worked fine.)  In the end I just had to re-load all my songs into the library.  This is no small feat as I have around 185K songs in over 1TB in my music library.
The problems i was having were-
-sluggish performance, gap between song playback, slow searching, slow quitting (Or not quitting at all until a force quit)  It was essentially unusable
-using 100% or more of CPU.
-not being able to remove songs from the library.
    - having multiple temp files appearing in the music library folder
I ended up creating a new library in the music folder in the sidebar. (Its default location).   I keep my files on an external HD, and set up the prefs to keep the music folder there.  You will want to export your playlists somewhere where you can find them and import them after you build the new library.  As long as your files don't move, iTunes should be able to load everything back into the playlists.
Once everything was set I went to iTunes/Files/Add to Library and manually selected a chunk of my library, then let it process.  I would take a letter or 2  at a time so I could redo if necessary.  (such as bands starting with" A", starting with "B" etc).  normally it would take 3-4 hours per letter.  I would let it do its thing, then quit and restart itunes, make sure it was playing, quitting etc as it should.  It took me 4 days to get the entire library re-entered, then re-loaded my playlists, and now it seems to be working just fine.
Obviously this was a pain as it took 4 days to re-do, but there was something about the old library that itunes just couldn't digest.  Now itunes runs at around 2% CPU when playing, maybe 20% when searching etc.  it will quickly play another selection when chosen.  just like it is supposed to.
it's the slow way to fix it, but it was the only thing that has worked for me.  I finished this 2 days ago, so time will tell if the problem crops up again, but for now averything seems cool.

  • Logic cpu meter spike while recording / monitoring?

Hey, I just checked Logic's internal CPU meter, and noticed something quite weird is happening.
I have only ever had one overload message, which I think was caused by changing a BFD2 setting, so the fact Logic believes that it's maxing out one of my cores confuses me a little more.
Anyway, in a template project (just unused audio tracks), if I click the record (or the monitor) button, my first core tops out in Logic's meter, but in the activity monitor, little changes, and sometimes even shows the load changing between cores, with Logic still insisting the overloading core is doing the work.
If I deselect the button, the core returns to no/little load. It doesn't seem to affect Logic's performance, but I'm more than curious about this.
Anyone have the same thing happen to them, or is there a reason for this?

    From another post of mine:
An observation about lopsided CPU behaviour: a reliable source(an AU and hardware developer) remarked the other day that according to his tests all stuff that is on record enabled/monitored tracks can only run in a single thread using the (small) i/o buffer on one CPU.
This 'real time' CPU can easily be overloaded, while the rest of the CPU's may be idling.
You can have loads and loads of CPU hungry stuff on tracks that are in playback mode(and that use a large buffer because logic knows what is coming) on an octocore, but for record/monitor enabled tracks the octocore is just as good as a single core/cpu machine with the same specs(CPU speed/cache/RAM speed etc.)
Haven't tested this myself yet, but is sounds plausible and it would certainly explain some of the trouble I've seen with CPU overtloads.

  • High CPU usage with LabVIEW Mobile (PDA)

I just started my first LV mobile (PDA) application and I should be doing something incorrectly. I used a producer/consumer (events) architecture in my first attempt. The only thing my VI has is a stop button that made the app stop; nothing else. When I ran it in the pda it was using between 95 and 100% of the CPU time. I’m aware of, and planning in using, the recomendations about memory usage, buffer allocation, etc. but at this point my app does not have anything but two for loops running in parallel; one of them with the event structure.  I wonder if there is any particular framework that is better for mobile apps.I used the default values in the builder to create the executable. My executable was made with LV 8.6, mobile module 8.6  (trial mode) and the PDA is running windows mobile 6.1 Any adivice that helps me understand why a very simple app is soooo cpu hungry will be highly appreciated.

I think this is a very good question. Have you solved the problem?

  • Opening a Logic Pro file in Logic Express

Hi my Nephew is thinking of buying Logic Express (He can't afford Logic Pro) so we can collaborate together on some toonz. Now if I send him a song I have created in Logic Pro will it be OK for him to open in Logic Express to work on that song?
What will have happened to all the parts that I have created on the instruments in Logic Pro which are not available in Logic Express? would it just be MIDI notes/ data? and vice versa.
    Many Thanks

    Hi there...
When i'm in the studio I work with LP7, but on the road (and its more often then not) I use LE7. This 12" powerbook 1.5gz w/ 1.25mb 80hd has the FULL LP7 install and the FULL LE7 install, as well as lots of Garageband loops, and most free, AUs.
In Express (with a LP7 install, on the same machine) the ONE thing that is poor, is opening a LP7 project that leverages PLUGS for LP7. But that's ok as Sculpture and all those other goodies are too cpu hungry for a single G4 (IMHO).
So you will not get those working, BUT, with a real LP7 install the EXSp24 can OPEN the instruments from the much much larger library of material inside LE7. It's kind of like Logic Express-PRO...sounds strange i know.
Oh, and don't forget that LE7 need to really be the 7.1.1 version as that one adds the HybredMorph inst from GB. Keep your bus counts down and no auxs in the LP7 sessions if you KNOW a LE7 users will pop them open
    YMMV... but Good luck.

  • Buffer Size - How low can you go

I was wondering if you guys can exchange some information about your Buffer Size settings in Logic and how much milage you can get out of it.
I upgraded to the new 8-core 2.8GHz MacPro a few weeks a go and thought I would live in 32Sample Buffer Size dreamland until the software developers come out with the next CPU hungry beast. But it looks like that a lot of the current Software Instruments bring down the new Intel Macs already to their knees.
    *This is my setup:*
    MacPro 2.8GHz 8-core, 12GB RAM, OSX 10.5.3, Logic 8.02, Fireface 800
    *This is my Problem:*
If I'm looking at one channel of i.e. Sculpture, then all the 8 cores don't do me any good, because Logic can use only 1 core per channel strip. The additional cores come into place when I'm playing
multiple tracks and Logic spread the CPU workload across those cores. So if I set the Buffer Size to the minimum of 32 Samples, then it comes down to one 2.8GHz processor and if he is powerful enough to process that one Software instrument without clicks and interruptions.
    Sculpture:
Some of the patches are already so demanding that I reach the CPU limit when I play chords of four to eight notes with the 32 Sample Setting. If I add some "heavy" FX Plug-ins like amp modeling then I definitely reach the limit.
    _Trilogy and Atmosphere Wrapper:_
Most of the time I have to increase the buffer size to 128 just to play a few notes. These "workaround wrapper plugins" are a plain joke from Spectrasonics and almost useless. There is plenty of discussion in various forums how they pizzzed off o lot of their customers with the way they handled their Intel transition regarding these two great plugins.
    *Audio Interface Considerations:*
The different vendors of audio interfaces brag about their low latency of their devices. Especially Apogee's Symphony System was supposed to deliver extremely low latency. When they demoed their hardware at various Apple events, they played gazzillions of track and plug-ins and everything was running at 32 Buffer Size. I never saw however a demo where they loaded a gazzillions Sculpture instruments and showed that playing with 32 Buffer Size.
*Here are my basic three questions:*
    1) Anybody experiencing already the same limitations with the new MacPros when it comes to intense Software Instruments
    2) Anybody uses the 3.2GHz machines and has better results, or is it just marginal.
    3) Anybody running the Symphony System and can throw any Software Instruments at it with 32 Buffer Size.
+BTW, the OSX 10.5.3 update fixed the constant popping up of the "System Overload" window, but regarding the CPU load with Software Instruments, I don't see that much of an improvement.+

My system is happy at 32 samples with the FF800... This is on the Jan 8 Core with 6 gig RAM, running X.5.3, Logic 8.0.2.
Plugs include - NI Komplete5 bundle, Waves GOLD, BFD2 (thought this would stump it but it's fine with 2.0.4) Access Virus TI Snow.
Safety IO buffer off and the Buffer set to small.

  • How they can say it's fine when there are so many problems?

I've had my Macbook barely a month, but I've taken it to the store twice for diagnostics, called Apple.com 3 times, erased and reloaded everything, and still have numerous issues despite being told 'it all checks out' and a 'replacement is not indicated'...it has more problems than my 6 yr old Compaq desktop...
It started 20 hrs after purchase when, aften shutting down, the sleep light apparently came on and overheated the computer. It could only be turned on again after taking out the battery. This has happened 4 times, despite being sure I'm proprerly signed out and the screen is dark before shutting. Then once it woulnd't boot up - just showed muclitple colored verticle lines...a call seems to have handled that, but the result is irregularly being able to access the internet, whether thru Safari or Firefox. The address shows in teh URL line but hte screen remains white and blank. Occasionally it freezes in an email, is very delayed in receiving or sending something or loading a page. It's not MSN or my DSL as my old computer is managing this well. It's been very frustrating as all my Mac firend told me how great they were...but I'm afraid this new version with the intel processor has bugs to get worked out. It's at the store as I speak and they tell me it checks out fine, tho I've spent hours dealing with each new bug...and I'm trying to start a business and can't afford the time these issues are taking! Any suggestions? REading the others comments, it doesn't sound like I'm the only one, but am not sure how to advocate at this point.

    A few comments/suggestions:
It started 20 hrs after purchase when, aften shutting
down, the sleep light apparently came on and
overheated the computer. It could only be turned on
again after taking out the battery. This has
happened 4 times, despite being sure I'm proprerly
signed out and the screen is dark before shutting.
I've seen a couple of posts complaining of sleeping MacBooks not really sleeping and becoming very hot when closed. What others have suggested is making very sure that the sleep light is pulsing, to make sure its really asleep, before closing the lid. This is if your intention is to put the machine to sleep, not shut it down completely.
Your use of the term "signed out" makes me wonder if you mean "logged out". Once or twice I have seen my machine pop up a message after I try to log out, that some process has hung, and it refuses to go further. I would imagine there could be a problem if you close the lid in this state. (The process that syncs iDisk was the culprit in the instance I remember.)
If you've completely shut down the machine, I don't know how it could turn itself back on unless there's truly a hardware problem.
Then once it woulnd't boot up - just showed
muclitple colored verticle lines...a call seems to
have handled that, but the result is irregularly
being able to access the internet, whether thru
Safari or Firefox. The address shows in teh URL
line but hte screen remains white and blank.
The refusal to boot up and instead show colored vertical lines is allegedly a problem with OS 10.4.7, which may be permanently fixed by the next OS release.
To temporarily get it to boot, reset the PRAM/NVRAM by holding down the cmd-option-P-R keys while restarting until it chimes twice.
If the problem recurs, to make a fix that "sticks", once you're booted up, change your screen resolution to something else and back again. This writes to PRAM. This has worked for me.
Occasionally it freezes in an email, is very
delayed in receiving or sending something or loading
a page. It's not MSN or my DSL as my old computer is
    managing this well.
If you're running many applications, especially CPU-hungry ones, with limited memory, you might have delays as your email or browser pages in and out of memory. However, I don't notice this on my machine with 512MB, like yours, running several typical apps at once. Running anything under Rosetta, like MS Office, will chew up memory.
Depending on your network hardware, you might try isolating to see if the problem is in your network setup. For example, if your DSL is connected to a router, try a wired ethernet connection straight to your DSL modem and see if the problems go away. Then work logically backwards.
The previous post from nazdarky is describing the "random shutdown problem", but I didn't get from your post that this is one of your problems.

  • Questions on use of freeze mode in Logic Pro

    Hi,
I've noticed that the soft synth plug-ins are eating some of the CPU processing power. The bar is about a third of the way. I have frozen a few tracks but there are a few that don't seem to have the freeze icon in sight.
I configured the track header by right clicking a track and selected freeze. Only a handful of tracks offer me the option to freeze them. Is there a shortcut of freezing tracks individually? Also, besides bussing groups of instruments to an effects plug-in, what other solutions can I undertake within the production to save up on cpu?
The majority of the tracks are automated with only one delay designer on a snare and synth keys. The drumkit will be bussed to a multipressor.
    Cheers

Instruments in Multi output mode can't be frozen, so that's probably what you're experiencing. Once you're finished with composing you can render/bounce CPU hungry Instruments, re-import the bounced files and play them back as normal Audio files, which will certainly free up a lot of CPU.

  • Any Flash Videos don't work in Safari 5.1 anymore...

    Hi guys,
I did a fresh install of OS X Lion, and everything was working fine so far.
I even didn't have to install flash or so, the YouTube videos were working fine (CPU hungry as usual, but it was working).
Today, it suddently stoped to work. I tried to uninstall Flash, reinstall it but I can't get any flash videos... from any website.
However, everything works fine on Chrome... so it's weird.
The only thing I could think right now is the fact I did replace some Quicktime codec to add some format... Unfortunately, I didn't save the ones I replaced
It seems to be the only operation I did since the time it was working fine.
    1) Can someone confirm me that quicktime codec could mess up the Flash video playback in Safari and not in Chrome?
    2) Does anyone has the original quicktime codec to download? (from your /System/Library/Quicktime and from /Library/Quicktime folders)
Any help would be very welcomed
    Thanks,
    Phil

With help of someone else and hours and hours of hard fighting, I finally got it to work again by downloading and installing the new Flash 11 beta, available on Adobe Labs website...
I don't know if it did "fix" anything, but at least it works again...

  • How can I use different presets on the same instrument?

I use Session Horns Pro with Kontakt Played in Mainstage 3.
You can choose different presets within Session Horns without having to load additional samples and take up more memory.
How can I create different patches that use the changes of Session Horn Patches without duplicating the samples in Kontakt?
If I copy the channel strip and 'Paste as alias" changes made to one copy are the same as the alias. It seems there must be a way to "Automate" controls in an alias that is unique to each patch. I could also use to do this on instruments like Vintage Clav and Vintage B3 where I don't want to create duplicate instances of CPU hungry plug ins just to use different presets in different patches.
Thanks in advance to anyone out there who knows of a workaround!

  • MacPro Quad Core 32g Ram running slow Logic using only 9g in Activity Monitor

Well its taken a while, but this is my first foray into the world of forums! I'm so hacked off with this regular problem and havent been able to find anything anywhere to solve it i thought i'd see if anyone has any similiar issues and maybe even a solve to it.
So.... im an orchestrator and producer and after my mid 2008 Macbook Pro with 8g ram started freezing up i invested in this 3 years ago -
Mac Pro 2x 2.4ghz Quad Core intel Xeon and stuck in 32gb of lovely Crucial RAM and 3 seperate internal 1TB drives with one for operating system (10.6.8), one for Audio recording/saving and one for all my sample libraries.
32gb ram - should be enough i thought!
So i regularly run at least 30 VI's - Ni The giant, Spitfire Orchestral librabies (say 12 string instruments up to 0.69g per load) LASS strings, plus perc STYLUS, ABBEY road drums, Trillian basses (acoustic/electric), ominisphere etc etc. So pretty hefty sample instruments. But theyre sooo nice!!
In addition, the 32 bit server will come alive (NOT! So unstable i find) with my Waves plugs etc.
Looking at ACTIVITY MONITOR however i might be not touching 9 gig (and sometimes even less) of usage for Logic, and only say 800MB for 32 bit server and have NOTHING else open - and what do i find .....
    - Mouse lag and cant really do anything with the mouse whilst playing the track - cant adjust volume - too slow, zooming problems
    - Takes a good 2-3 seconds for track to stop playing
Dont get System OVERLOADS so much, its just that the system goes REALLLLLY slow.
    What ive tried- - -
    - Running Mountain Lion off another drive (havent had time to install it and wanted to be sure everything worked etc)
    - Tried all audio prefs - large/small buffers/threads etc and yes i am on 1024.
in a nutshell how come with 32g RAM everything is so slow when barely using 10g of that???????
I dread getting to the end of a project cos i know im gonna be freezing so much, but with so much editing all the time for the orchestral parts i need everything unfrozen and working.
Sorry if this is long winded but wanted to describe what im experiencing.
Any feedback most welcome! Thankyou in advance.

The 32bit server is a pita: Waves v9 are 64bit  compatible (they run fine). 32 bit VI's can be run outside Logic using Vienna Ensemble Pro (see later)

Some of these VI's are extremely CPU hungry: Abbey Rd drums for example, really do hammer the CPU. What does Logic's Performance meter show in the way of CPU load. What does Activity Monitor show regarding CPU load?
With 32G of RAM, this should not be the issue, but you might have general CPU problems (see above), and you may also have Sample disk streaming limitations if all the Loibraries you mention are on the same drive. How does Activity Monitor look regarding disk access? You might find it helpful to add a second drive and split the sample libraries across 2 for faster disk access.
I presume that you have plenty of free space on the System drive?
Logic can get sluggish if the Undo info gets way too big, and also if there are loads of regions in the Arrange: check Options:Project Information.
Many are finding some benefits (me included) by running the VI's in Vienna Ensemble Pro:
Better CPU load distribution than directly in Logic
"Persistant Samples": they can remain loaded whilst you switch Logic Projects
Logic is effectively running much less itself, so generally flies.
32bit Plugs hosted separately in VEP so no 32bit Bridge issues in Logic
Something to consider, though perhaps not yet, would be setting up a Slave computer using VEP.
