Sculpture Sidechain

Sorry if this has been asked before.
How do you use a sidechain to modulate the amplitude envelope? Can you modulate anything else with the sidechain and how?

This topic comes up fairly frequently, and is most often a misunderstanding or lack of knowledge about what it is you are trying to achieve.
Sending a sidechain signal into Sculture means that you can use the audio signal as a modulator in the synth - mostly to excite the string according to your audio souce.
It doesn't turn Sculture into a guitar-synth, for example.
To do this, you should set the output of the guitar track to "No Output", so it can't be heard through the mixer (do not simply mute the channel).
Now on the audio instrument that Sculture is on, select your guitar audio track as the sidechain signal, and select the external/sidechain input in one of the string modulators - you'll need to play with the exciter strength. Now as you play Sculture with MIDI notes, the guitar audio will be affecting Sculpture's string.

  • Sidechaining sculpture

i want know how can i use scuplture to sidechain onto an audio track, i have this guitar riff that is in audio track but i want to use the sounds and fx of sulpture to mimic the riff instead of the original recording, please help!
    thanks

The details of Sculpture's Sidechaining capabilities are prolly better describe in the manual but... you can set a track or bus to excite sculpture but it won't recreate/resynthesize/remodel a track. Make sense? In other words, you can modulate sclpture using this track but not resynthesize.

  • Sidechaining audio to sculpture

does anyone know how to run audio through sculpture?
is it possible to do this?
what kind of sounds can you get?
a step by step guide of setting this up would be appreciated.

Just set up your patch in Sculpture. Then in the Sidechain slot at the top of the Sculpture window, select an Audio track (the more rhythmic the better).
As noted by jord, Sculpture will not actually process your audio; it just uses the audio to excite the Objhect 2 "oscillator". Try setting up an Apple Loops format drum loop in an audio track and sidechain that into Sculpture...that will give you a good idea of what sidechaining in Sculpture can do.

  • Help with Sculpture

    Hi again!
I have just managed to get Logic working!
I now need some guidence regarding Sculpture.
I have my guitar coming out of Audio 1. Now i have set scuplture on Instrument 1. How do i use sculpture with my guitar? I do no tknow how to set sculputre so it effects my guitar. I can effect the sound from audio1. i.e distortions and delays, but not with sculputre.
Thanks for helping me last time aswell!
    Joe!

The sidechain affects Sculpture's oscillators and not the other way around. The sidechain will act as a disturber/exciter on the "string", affecting its characteristics. In order for this to happen, you need to be playing a sequence in Sculpture while feeding in an audio track in your sidechain. Make sure your disturber in Object 2 is set to external, while setting your sidechain to your audio track.

  • Uograde to Logic Studio just for Sculpture?

I'm really happy with Logic Express, and have added a lot of multi sampled libraries for the EXS24. But
I do love physical modelling syntheszers because they can emulate acoustic plucked instruments really well, and I've heard that Sculpture is a physical modelling synth. But surprisingly there are no videos about this synth on youtube.
So, is it a good idea to upgrade to Logic Studio just to get Sculpture? If not, should I get Applied Acoustic Studio's (physical modelling synth)"String Studio VS-1, instead?

AAS String Studio is indeed a great Plug In but it sounds nothing like Sculpture and isn't as versatile. String Studio can create very special sounds as well as bread&butter stuff, the fretless basses sound great, the guitars not so much and you can get some incredible experimental sounds and pads out of it as well but it has more limited modulation and editing capabilities than Sculpture.
In Sculpture you can sidechain an Audio Input to trigger/disturb the string yielding to incredible results like rythmical textures (if you e.g. use a drumlooop/sequencer as sidechain Input) which you can't achieve with String Studio. Also you can record Midi controller data and turn that into a sequenced loop which is another fantastic feature of Sculpture. The characteristic of the plucked string can be anything between nylon, metal, glass or wood, abusing the parameters let's you create instruments you've never heard of. Also the morphing feature is great where you can dynamically morph between different aspects of a sound all synced to the clock of your DAW. The Jitter LFO´s are very useful too and the Modulation matrix as a whole is very well developed.
So I would say yes, upgrade to L8 (there are many other reasons for that by the way) and you'll be a happy musician/producer.

  • No sidechain option on compressor

Hey, having a little trouble using sidechain compression in Logic Pro X. When i open up the compressor no matter what channel or bus it is on, there is no way to choose the sidechain option. I have seen video tutorials and it is as if everyone has a totally different view than i do. There is a sidechain detection option but that doesn't seem to do anything at all.. Is there anyone to change the view or reinstall the compressor or something? See screen shot...
    Thanks in advance..

    Hi
Go to Logic Pro X:Preferences:Advanced Tools

  • Use of sidechains in ultrabeat

I confess some confusion after trying to use sidechains in Ultrabeat. Page 566 of Logic Studio Instruments and Effects (Logic 8) says: "Note: A side chain audio signal alone is not enough to trigger Ultrabeat’s processors. To hear the side chain audio signal Ultrabeat needs to be triggered by MIDI or its internal step sequencer."
I can't tell if I am doing something wrong, but when I set the sidechain as "input 1" (which is a midi piano) and populate it with midi signals, and then direct the Ultrabeat track (track 11) to use input 1 as the sidechain, I cannot tell any difference between that setup and no sidechain. Track 11 has Osc 1 set to side chain and its turned on.

The most obvious thing that comes to mind is that you've asked your question in the wrong forum.

  • Is it possible to play Sculpture using my Roland GR-55 synth?

I'm connecting the CakeWalk UM-1G MIDI USB Interface to connect my Roland GR-55 Guitar Synth to Logic Pro 9.1.7 with the purpose of controlling or being able to access the sound capabilities of Sculpture and record them as audio tracks. Can anyone share their wisdom on how I might make this possible?

I guess you'd probably need to install a Mac OS driver from here -
    http://www.roland.co.uk/products/productdetails.aspx?p=1148#.T-2rhduF-IB
so you can select an input in Logic, other than that setup doesn't differ much from using a MDI keyboard. I don't know how well MIDI guitar controllers work these days - thay used to produce a lot of spurious notes, which had to be filtered out below a certain velocity or deleted after recording, but my one time experience was quite some time ago; you may get some more experienced user advice with a bit of luck, though the forum seems to be a bit sparse these days. A post on LogicProHelp might yield results also, if you need any more help.
And you'll need to record a MIDI track first, which can then be bounced, if you want an audio file.

  • Sidechaining of 3rd party plugins in Logic 7

I would love to know if there is a way of sidechaining 3rd party compressors (such as waves or sonalksis) in Logic 7.
The logic compressor allows you to sidechain via the drop-down sidechain menu but this is not available on any third party compressors that I have tried. (Even when the manufactures indicate that sidechaining is available with their products).
Does anyone know of a work-around or of any other compressors that allow sidechaining in Logic 7?

I recall some kind of work around or tutorial on the waves.com site for achieving this.

  • Sculpture

    Hi,
Not sure if this is a new bug in Logic Pro 9.0.1, but I can't seen to turn on the animation by right-clicking on the green string in Sculpture. (A friend who has the Logic Pro 9.0.1 update also has the same problem too). Can anybody else confirm this ? Could it have been disabled in the update possibly ? Is there a fix/solution ?
    Thanks,
    J.

I'm also noticing that the contextual menu for copy/pasting and assigning randomize points doesn't pop up when I right click on the morph pad. Can anyone else confirm this?

  • Location of Logic's "In-Built" Audio Units? (Sculpture etc.)

I'd like to be able to use plug-in instruments/fx like Sculpture, Space Designer etc. etc. in Nuendo, without having to resort to rewire.
With the program Plogue Bidule I can insert Au into Vst and vice-versa...
    (and much more...super prog.)
But...uh...where are these Logic "built-in" Audio Units?
Needless to say I have full registered versions of all of these.
They function as plug-ins so they must exist in some self contained format somewhere on the drive.
    Any Suggestions?
    Thanks
    Brutze

This is what I found as well (in response to my post
here), and it's a shame. I'd be happy to have to
have my dongle plugged in if I could use Logic's
effects and synths in external apps.
And a lot of us would be happy if we could have an Mbox plugged in and use RTAS plugins within Logic. And maybe some VST's as well. But that's just not the way it is.
Aside from the hypocracy on Apple's part (they say
AU's are good enough for 3rd party developers)
They are good enough for third party developers. I think you misunderstood what Apple was saying there. A third party developer is anyone willing to create a plugin in the AU format - a third party developer is NOT steinberg. . . and a third party product is NOT cubase/nuendo because it cannot be used in conjunction with Logic. If it can be used in conjuction with Logic (i.e. any plugin NOT made by Apple, but is still encoded using the AU format) but is not made by apple, it is third party.
expected to be able to use these components outside
of Logic, and was disappointed to find out this
    wasn't possible.
Use a few other DAW systems, and you will find that any native plugins are not useable in other DAWs. . . such as Digidesign's Beat Detective - I'd love to use that in Logic - but I can't.
Logic is not the only software that doesn't allow the use of its included plugins outside of the host software. It is EVERY DAW software.

  • 3-rd party Plugins & Sidechain

I wonder if there is a way how to use the sidechain effect with 3-rd party plugin that does not have the sidechain option. Some 3-rd party plugins have the sidechain input options, but some do not
The obvious example: kick and bass guit.
Say I use a compressor from Duende Channelstrip or MetricHalo Channelstrip on the bass track (or Bus) and I want my Kick track as the sidechain input of the compressor I am using on Bass track or Bus - but this compressor has no sidechain option...
In Cubase/Nuendo there is a trick with creating Quad Group channels and routing of theese, Sonar users are sending one track panned hard left and second hard right to a Stereo Bus and the left channel triggers the right channel etc....
Any kind of a trick how to achieve this with Logic?

I have'nt attempt this, has yet but whether or not a
    plugin has sidechain feature,
it can be-side chain in manys ways,
One way could be, using the Plugin on the bus/Chanell.
    Another way gould be,
to use certain sound-card, some of which, Drivers, can use as an insert, to groups/or channels, out and inside of L.P.
I swear it can be done using Mastero of Apogee & R.M.E. Fire-Face 800 settings.

  • Sculpture monitoring issue!

I am back with my Environment questions. This time regarding Environmental Monitoring of Sculpture and UltraBeat. To me it seems as if the controllers of Scuplture does not respond to the same fader events they send out.
    Here is an example:
I cabled a monitor after the Audio Instrument to which I assigned the Scuplture. Thereafter I changed the Tension Mod fader of Sculpture. This shows me the message F 2 62 x in the monitor.
Fine! I set up my Transformer to transform a normal modulation to F 2 62 x. Cable this transformer to the Sculpture and go loose on my Modulation wheel.
For some reason this does not cause the Tension Mod to change as I had expected. Instead it alters the Timbre setting of object 1. This sculpture controller gives the Monitor an output of F 2 65 x.
The Ultrabeat seems even worse since it doesn't seem to respond in any way to the fader events it sends to the Monitor.
It seems to me there is some problem with these two new synths and the way they recieve and send Midi messages. I'm not sure what I could have done wrong either since the method for what I do is quite straight forward.
    Thankful for any help!
    All the best
    /Jont Olof

    Tension is assigned to
    F 2 36 x
I don't think you're doing anything wrong, I got the same problems as you did. Maybe it has to do with the new team of programmers, maybe it has to do with the number of paramaters. UltraBeat simply can't be controlled this way, there are not enough paramaters-plug in 4 cinema displays and switch it to controls view, note how many paramaters exist and are hidden, phew. Maybe someone else knows the rest of this one...
