Sculpture, ultrabeat etc.

hi again!
i can`t find ultrabeat, sculpture etc. in my logic pro7, can anyone give me a step to step list of finding these features and using it?
ståle

I must admit that, as a newbee, it took me some time to grasp the concept from the awkward presentation in the manual, jut because it gets channels and tracks all confused.
There was a time when sequencers didn't provide a way to accommodate audio signals, so the only route was:
(1) midi file > midi region > [midi track] > midi channel > output = midi events
Now, technology enables the alternative path:
(2) audio file > audio region [audio track] > audio channel > output = audio events
And inserting an instrument-plug in an audio channel allows for using an audio track as a midi track which the plug turns into an audio track that feeds an audio channel - an hybrid:
(3) midi file > midi region > [midi track] > [instr. plug] > [audio track] > audio channel > output = audio events
But things aren't constructed in this order. You'll have to
1: create an audio channel - or use an existing one
2: assign a track to it - from now on, it's an audio track
3: insert an instrument-plug as input - it won't be the actual input, just a medium
4: feed this track with midi data - the actual input - that will be converted to audio in real-time through the use of the plug-in...
All of this would make sense at once if it weren't for the upsetting confusion between technical terms and conceptual notions. For instance, the menu that says "create new track" doesn't create a new channel: it must already exist in the environment. This is obvious for midi channels - since channels 1 to 16 already exist, virtually, in the [invisible] interface with the midi driver - but audio channels must be actually defined in the [invisible] interface between Logic and the audio driver, before you can assign tracks to them.
As a matter of fact, tracks are chameleon, while channels are not. They will when technology has improved enough to convert audio data into midi data in real-time. Then we'll have second alternative:
(4) audio file > audio region > [audio track] > [A2M plug] > [midi track] > midi channel > output = midi events

  • On which drive should I put samples?  Is EXS, Ultrabeat, etc. streamed/ram?

Hey, i am setting up the new iteration of my home studio. I upgraded to 7 Pro recently and am taking advantage of the new 500GB internal hard drive. My question is, should I relocate (via alias) my EXS24 and Ultrabeat samples to my new 500GB along with BFD?
I ask this because I am not sure if those Logic instruments stream the audio from your HD or if they are loaded into RAM.
If they are indeed streamed I will plop them with my BFD and leave my native OS drive to just app running and as scratch recording (later putting the audio recordings on the secondary 500GB drive). Any advice? Thanks!

    Greetings, Scroto.
This is not a straighforward answer...
EXS24 does its best to move what it needs into RAM. For instance, check out Options > Preferences on the EXS24 panel. You can even get the EXS24 to keep common samples in memory when switching songs.
However, I prefer to have anything that might make the drive work hard on my system disk. So, samples and video are normally on my system disk so that Logic can stream quite happily to my scratch disk. Having said that, I've sometimes had jerky video (Logic gives priority to audio) so moving that file to the scratch disk has given me silky smooth playback.
So, for my working rpactice at least, there are benefits in both methods. I have worked with people who put all AV material, including samples, projects (therefore including freeze files) and anything else on their scratch drives and then wonder why they get mixed results, including the dreaded out of sync message.
I only have two high-performance drives but can see the real benefit of having a third FW drive which can then hold all samples, video material and so on, leaving the scratch disk for audio alone. I'd appreciate comments from anybody who has tried this.

  • How do I find and turn Core Audio On.

When I try to open Logic it stops at “Initializing Core Audio”.
I have read the topics page and carried out all the suggestions including starting with the control key down to get into logic. When I do this logic opens and a box comes up with Launch Core Audio Driver, Yes or No. If yes, it freezes, if no I can load it up, but there is no core audio at all when I do.
In the inspector, the CORE AUDIO is greyed out. I have gone to Preferences and ticked the Core Audio box and ticked “Apply” and then it freezes again. Logic cannot see or find the Logic Core Library.
How do I turn Core Audio on? I have No Sound at all. There is no instrument list ( EXS 24, ES1, ES2, Sculpture, Ultrabeat etc) coming up in the I/O box, it only says No Plugin. When I load a previous song there is a line through the I/O instrument and no sound. In the arrange window the audio levels show that there is activity but there is no sound and the instruments are crossed out.
It seems like there is a communication problem between the program and the Core Audio sound banks. Could this have something to do with the drivers? If so, Where can I get the drivers from and how do I put them in.
Does anyone know how to get inside Logic maybe to a lower level so that I can tick some box to get the sounds back again.
If I re-install the program will it fix the problem?
Sorry to be so long-winded but I am in a mess with this, so any kind of advise would be very much appreciated.
    Many thanks.
    Roy.

I haven't had this problem, but on other computers, I have seen some sound functions only work if you don't run certain other things on start-up. Try opening System Resources:Accounts:<your account>:Login Items, and clearing out the list.
    Hope you solve it!

  • Tutorials for Logic Studio?

I was wondering if anyone might be able to direct me to finding a tutorial for logic studio. I just bought the program yesterday and thought that would be the quickest and easiest way for me to understand the program. If no such thing exists than let me know too, thanks.

    http://www.macprovideo.com/tutorial/Logic8101
They have many other tutorials available too, including instruments such as Sculpture, Ultrabeat etc. in addition to the more general tutorials.

  • Ultrabeat & Sculpture Question

    Hi Everyone,
I'm a newbie to logic and I'm still trying to learn this wonderful program. I have purchased most of the macprovideo material and it has really helped simplify things. Though the videos are great, I really wish they would cover logic's synths, particularly Sculpture & Ultrabeat. I am aware of the included reference guides, but I am still curious to know what other resourses are available that can make the learning curve a bit less steep. Your advice is greatly appreciated.
    JV

I personally am unaware of any 3rd party books or tutorials that cover either of those two Logic instruments. Although I can certainly see the desire for that.
I would suggest setting aside some time, and digesting the manuals. Perhaps covering one page at a time, really spending time with a "section" of the plug-in, as opposed to the whole thing. Take apart small "chunks", and really learn what a small group of parameters do.
After a few days, or weeks (depending on how much time you have to devote to it), I think you'll be feeling pretty confident with your knowledge.
    My 2 cents...

  • Sculpture automation & Controller assignment issues

    Hey guys,
I have an instance on Sculpture in a project i am working on. Everything is fine until the point where i try to manually write some automation in the arrange window. As soon as I select the parameter i want to change (LFO1 rate in this case) the sound of sculpture gets all weird and sounds nothing like the one before.
Is this some kind of bug? has anyone encountered this?
I also have another question and as im posting this anyway ill just put it here.
Im trying to set up a nanoKontrol2. Ctrl+k, created several modes (fader, es2, ultrabeat etc). I've assigned several buttons to switch between the modes but the assigned functions wont operate until i also choose that particular instrument in the arrange window.
Is there a way around this? i.e switch bet modes and actually affect that instrument without having to use a mouse to choose it?
Im also having problems with the fader mappings when trying to control volume levels of multi output instruments exs24, ultrabeat. When i move a fader of the overall instrument only the volume of one (unassigned) fader of lets say output 3-4 of that instrument will get affected. Im i doing something wrong?
    Cheers

I'm not sure if this will help: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvBmsMB2XSQ&feature=PlayList&p=5B14BDD35A022ED3&i ndex=45
I spent a whole day following the above advice, assigning controls for my M-Audio keyrig 25 to 18 different logic native plugins (Channel EQ, Guitar Amp Pro, Tape Delay, etc etc). And then assigning'no-mode mode change' (if you follow me) to different letters on my 'caps lock keyboard'. This worked great yesterday. Now today it's all flaky: The caps lock keyboard doesn't change modes anymore, and only one of the assignment 'maps' seems to work. (Even making sure all target plug ins were on the same SELECTED track, and the plugin in question had 'focus' by clicking on it). Does anyone know if there's a known issue with controller assignment recall in Logic Pro (8)?

  • Cubase 6: elements of things to come?

Just been looking at the specs for Cubase 6 and I think it's interesting to note the developments - it looks good and I've heard good things about it.
There are features here which point towards very interesting developments (VST Expression), as well as a nice streamlined approach to the likes of audio-quantize/comping etc. Also the instruments and effects look like quite the selection now.
I'm certainly not planning on migrating anytime soon, but I think it starts to highlight some areas where Logic could use some development.
I really think Logic desperately needs a new effects range as pretty much everything except Sculpture/Ultrabeat/Amp Designer is at least 5 years old, and the majority is 10 years old and painfully dated IMO (EXS24? Modeulation etc).
I also think that Logic has hung on to too many of it's old GUI elements which make some processes more complicated than they need to be (especially being an iphone user where we have become accustomed to streamlined processes).
I strongly start to question with the AU spec is going to be up to some of the potential developments here to.
I don't plan on starting a debate here (famous last words!), but I sometimes wish I had the time/patience/energy to harness some of the qualities in other DAWs as they all have their qualities.
    Anyway... post message.

Yamaha has been good for Steinberg, they put very few shackles on the company, only that they try and integrate some of the Yamaha high end keyboards into the product. Mainly automated setup procedures. Cubase 5 has VST expressions although with VST 3 it will be much more advanced. When AU first came out VST was at version 1.5 so Steinberg hasn't been standing still. At this point VST development has moved way beyond where AU is, not that the AU format doesn't have potential. Cubase 5 also has the Melodyne style pitch correction built in, I have to say... it works very well. When Apple dumped PC support I moved to Cubase on the PC, and kept up Logic for personal use on the Mac. Each have their strengths. Cubase is not as efficient as Logic but it has far less quirks, makes use of multiple cores better than Logic and has one of the best audio editors of any platform.

  • What should I use for Logic Training??? Book(s) and or videos

    Hello Guys,
Real old school SVP & PT user just installed LP and am loving it!!! I installed L6 years ago and cold not get my brain around it. This time it's a bit different... I see it it this time but could use some help. Are there any books or videos you guys could recomend.
    Thanks in advance,
    Prio
    MacBook Pro 17" w/ 002   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    hi
    i'd second the above recommendation.
The martin sitter book (apple series ) for Logic pro 101 is great and even though i'd been using logic for 2+ years when i last read it i found lots of useful tips. I've bought the second book (Advanced Logic pro) again part of the apple series.
I've bought some of the macpro videos (www.macprovideo). The videos in general are BRILLIANT!
Unfortunately, you've just missed the sale...but they are well worth the full price.
The sculpture, ultrabeat and plugins videos i can vouch for are really really useful.
If you want some help around the basics of logic then the martin sitter video 101 looks good - but i prefered the book as it comes with the files to work along with.
check out the demos on their website & happy training!
btw, there are another series of logic videos (Ask videos i think) - seem good but i found them a little dry (the demos) and i found macpro videos easier to follow personally. Others vouch for askvideo so it depends on your particular learning style.

  • Logic 7.1 and OSX 10.6.6

    Hi all,
I've been running L7.1 on my old G5 for about 5 years now, I've never before upgraded (should have I know).
I've now also got a mbpro running OSX 10.6.6, I've installed 7.1 on my new mb without even thinking about the difference in chipsets, 7.1 has installed ok but I no longer can see any of the logic plug ins, sculpture esx24 etc...
Looking on here it seems that installing 7.1 on osx 10.6.6 may not have been the best idea... my question is this...
If if upgraded to latest L9 by choosing upgrade in the apple store (cheapest method) would the upgrade work fine seeing as I'm upgrading from 7.1???
    Cheers for the help

You MUST have at least Logic 7.2 to work on the Intel Mac.
That was a paid update, idiotically.
Upgrading to L9 would work fine, but not on the PowerMac.

  • Korn Nano Pad and Logic Studio

I just purchased a Korg NanoPad and after several hours still cannot figure out how to configure it with Logic 9. I want to be able to use the Logic 9 sounds in the (ESX24, Ultrabeat, etc.) on the Nano Pad without having to load each drum sound into the Korg Kontrol Editior. Is there a specific setting or plugin I need to download to do so. Any suggestions? Thanks.

    You are kidding, right?
The NanoPad is a midi output device and is used as a plain old controller. You don't load sounds into it.

  • Need help with Roland V-drums and MIDI

Is it possible to record the Roland TD-3 internal drum sounds from the module via MIDI without using the Logic plug-ins (like Ultrabeat) etc.? I used the GM Device drums and in the environment window hooked up the multi instrument to the QuickTime Synth with success. I have also used Ultrabeat as an instrument with success. And audio cables out into audio tracks with success. So, the question is... Is it possible just to run MIDI out and use the TD-3s internal sounds?

sorry I'm not getting a few things....
    1) how do I create a midi object?
you create the midi object in the midi inst layer of your environment. at the top left under the menu that says "new" select the very 1st thing in the list, "instrument" (midi instrument)
    2) where do I assign the midi output?
after you create the instrument the perameters box opens on the left. you assign the port and channel there
    5) where are the audio outs?
to what? the roland? doesn't it have audio output?
I've been reading the manual and have tried various
forums.... been trying to get this since last
night.... my brain. I know it's gotta be simple...
not real simple but not real hard either

  • Remove default Logic Synths

Is there anyway I can remove the default synths (i.e. ES1, EFM, Ultrabeat etc - which I never use) that come with Logic so they don't appear in the I/O menu and I'm just left with the ones I want to use or use regularly...
    TIA
    Tim

No, in the Plug In folder you will not find AU components for theses synths - they are encoded into the application and can not be removed.

  • Core audio again

Um, this problen is happening on brand new arrange as well. Loaded one audio instrument with a logic plug in and the audio is hanging when i play a note key. In other words I press down a key and no sound comes across for about 5 secs then the sound comes on. If I hold down the note it plays for about ten seconds then cuts out again, no sound for intermittent time and then plays again!
Have not changed any settings at all but had a lot of smokers in the room over the weekend while the mac was running. I'm not a smoker myself and cant imagine that this would cause issues with the machine but previous experience has led me to question anything different with the mac environment! really dont know what has suddenly caused this so ......Help?
    Marto

I don´t understand anything of this....running a single 15 min. track should cause problems like this? On an intel iMac? No way! Even with stock Ram (512) onboard. I could do that 10 years ago on a PM 8200, 100 mhz...OK! only 16 bit/44.1.
And now you suggest disabling widgets and networking and more....What the H...?
Right now I´m doing nothing but writing this, Cpu use: Kernel tasks, 5.5%.
    Activity monitor, 2 %, Windowserver(?) 0.3 %, safari 0.10 %, that´s about all.
Then I open a Logic project -only 10 audio tracks and few plug-ins.
Logic: Cpu 20%, Memory 152 mb.
There´s a lot of headroom here, even if I had only 512 mb Ram (I have 2GB).
And the suggestion to have buffer set to 256 or higher is not acceptable/usable or neccessary. Apart from Sculpture, Ultrabeat and direct monitoring
using Space D. I have no problem to go 64... But I set to 128 for safety.
    (And sometimes 512 for mixing)
I don´t know why this new macintel behaves like this, but it should in fact be more powerful, than my dp 1.8. If my (fantastic!) pm will not playback a single 15 min. track, I will not consider disabling dashboard. I will dig deeper.
Maybe, just maybe, you could try to open Garageband and change buffer,
low, high, whatever. I´ve experienced conflicts here before.

  • Virus B and Logic Pro 7 trouble

I cannot get Logic to see my Virus B... I have a G5 Dual 2.7, a MOTU Midi Timepiece AV, an Orbit V2 and the Virus, (also an 828) there is no problem with the Orbit, but nothing is getting to the Virus. In Digital Performer everything works great, the Virus plays just fine. Since getting Logic my studio has gotten smaller, (LOVE Sculpture, Ultrabeat and ES2) but the Virus is my fav hardware synth, so this is frustrating. I have quite a few years experience dealing with midi/computer challenges and I KNOW my connections are correct - is there some weird issue between the Virus and Logic? Can anyone share any insights?

OKAY! I reset my interface, (Midi Timepiece AV) and build a new set-up for it - and that seems to have taken care of it! SO NOW IT WORKS!!! Still, the on-board sequencer on the Virus B is not yet synced to Logic, but I am sure I can figure that out. I tried every suggestion made (and a few others) and it seems that re-setting the interface was the cure, which seems odd considering that all worked well in DP, before I did the reset.
Thanks you guys! I really appreciate it!!!
Still, looking back over the years I wish I could get back alll of the hours/days I have spend under my desk chasing midi cables... it should not be this difficult, even though for the most part it has gotten easier.
That said, Logic is the Kind! Thanks again for the help!

  • Using Yamaha DTX500 as drum controller in Logic - Please Help

    A super-newbie question,
I'm using Logic 9 express, and I want to use my Yamaha DTX520k electric drum kit as a midi drum controller so that ideally, I could play it and record 8 separate drum tracks in Logic (one for each drum pad). This way I could play with each individual track later.
I've got a Roland midi to usb UM-One to link the drums into Logic, and I've set that up in Audio Midi Setup, so it is showing up in Logic when I create a new External Midi track.
By from there I am stumped. I play the drums but Logic is not picking it up, and I have no idea how to create a map to ensure that the bass drum track will make a bass drum sound in Logic.
If anyone has any simple ideas on how to accomplish the above, I would be eternally grateful.
I have never worked with midi before.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Jeff

    Hi
    Some things to consider:
    a) MIDI from your kit could be routed to an Instrument track in Logic with a drumkit loaded (EXS24/Ultrabeat etc). You may run into isses of note-mapping between the kit and the (generally GM standard) sound mapping in EXS/UB. Either change the transmitted notes in the kit, or you'll need to do a re-map in Logic.. see item c).
    b) If you want to use the kit 'built-in' sounds, you'll need to connect up the audio outs to your audio interface. You may wish to record MIDI and re-send out to the 'brain' via an External MIDI track (but you will still need the audio connections in order to hear the kit in Logic). Make an audio track set to the correct inputs, and turn on Input Monitoring.
    c) If you need to re-map MIDI notes (Kick=kick etc), it will be quicker and easier to change them at the kit side, rather than in Logic (consult it's manual), but it is possible using a Mapped Instrument Environment object.
