SD Card an External HD automatically self ejecting?

I have a 21'' iMac 2.5GHz running 10.8.2. Recently, I have been experiencing some issues with my external HD, a Seagate free agent drive, disconnecing during time machine backups. I assumed this was either cable issues or the drive was beginning to die. However, today while I was transfering photos from an SD card plugged into the slot in the computer both the SD card and the external HD self-ejected. Strikes me as either a power issue or something with one of the buses. Has this happened to anyone before?

Hi, yes, it sounds like a power issue, most likely the free agent, ry without it connected & see if the SD card ever has problems.

• Why are external hard drives and similar continually self-ejecting under Yosemite?

When are Apple going to sort out the problem of external hard disk drives and other similar devices continually self-ejecting under Yosemite. This is a problem I have had ever since I upgraded my 21.5" iMac from Mavericks to Yosemite last year, and I when I upgraded to a 27" iMac last November with Yosemite pre-installed the same issue occurs. I cannot even update my TomTom SatNav because it keeps ejecting while the update is trying to process. I cannot use a WD external drive for backup purposes, and even memory sticks eject. This problem has only started with Yosemite and I do not believe I am the only one experiencing it as it has been aired on the communities website previously. I wish Apple would tackle this problem and issue a Yosemite update that resolves the issue. My present Yosemite version no.is 10.10.3.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

• Why does my iPod Classic self-eject with Windows 7?

I've been having a complete nightmare with my iPod Classic 160GB. When I plug it into the USB, iTunes doesn't recognise it and, when I watch the screen, it shows the "Connected" screen then ejects itself and disconnects! Anyone know why and what I do to be able to use my iPod? BTW I'm running Windows 7 - which updates itself automatically.
I've uninstalled everything Apple, restarted and reinstalled iTunes - but nothing seems to work. HELP!!

Glad to hear its working properly.
Just to clarify, "self-ejecting" is not what I was describing. If you use automatic syncing and disk use is NOT enabled, iTunes unmounts the iPod's "disk" most of the time, and mounts it ONLY when syncing is taking place. So, looking at the disk from Windows (the "system"), it will be mounted when iTunes is syncing, but otherwise unmounted. So what you described originally, with the iPod's screen initially showing "Connected" and then not connected a short time later makes sense, because the system was mounting the iPod disk to sync and then unmounting it after syncing was done.
However, in the iTunes window, the iPod should continue to appear in the sidebar, under DEVICES, whether the iPod's disk is currently mounted or not. It appears in iTunes when you connect the iPod and should remain there until you eject (or disconnect) the iPod. If the iPod was disappearing from the iTunes window by itself, there was something wrong. And it sounds like it's been corrected with your actions.

• Time Machine Disk Self-ejects, and more

I'm using a 1 TB FreeAgent GoFlex external USB drive as my Time Machine back up. Half the time it works perfectly, other times it suddenly ejects itself and I get a message about how the disk was ejected improperly. If I pop out the USB cable, then plug it back in, the disk remounts and goes on as before. Other times it will begin backing up, and seems to get stuck in "back up" mode. It keeps evaluating the main hard drive until it's time to shut down for the day. I can't make it stop. If I go ahead and shut down, the computer quits everything down to the bare desktop, then locks up. If I shut down while not stuck in "evaluating" the computer shuts down normally.
How do I make the disk quit self ejecting?
How do I keep it from getting stuck "evaluating" the disk?

I have a similar problem which only recently developed with my Seagate FreeAgent Desktop Classic. The drive ejects only during TM backups. Here's the message from the TM widget:

have reformatted the external drive which has not helped.
No problem if TM is switched off. No disk errors with Apple's native disk utility, however Seagate's drive manager reports that "the selected drive failed its most recent diagnostic test" but does not provide any further information.
Have sent an email to seagate and awaiting their reply. Drive still under warranty.

• WD Disk started to self eject everytime

Hi guys.
I´m Having issues with my 2010 13" Macbook Pro 7,1.
I made the OWC Data Doubler mod almost 1.5 years ago.
Since the mod everything has been running butterly smooth.
Disks:
OS : OWC ELECTRA 6g 128Gb SSD
MEDIA: WD Scorpio Black 750Gb 7200RPM HD
Once i installed Mavericks the WD Disk started to self eject everytime... i reformated both disks.. reinstalled mavericks via thumbdrive (CleanInstall) and the problem still persist.
I thought the problem was the disk... so i mounted it on a external enclosure and ran a backup... it ran pefectly.
So. My other guess was the SATA Cable on the macbook pro. i order one vía iFixit with another HD just in case...
But my hopes of fixing it are still very low...
Any advice from someone with a similar problem or with knowledge of this kinds of problems?
(Sorry for my english)
<Re-Titled By Host>

Well,
i guess it's totally Apple's problem.
I'm running WD Green 3TB Internal SATA HDD on MacPro 5.1 and it self ejecting spontaniously from day 1...
Also I turned off and then changed to max head parking value..
Still ejecting and ejecting...or after 1 mounth of perfect work...or after 1 day(
So it really looks like WD-Apple conflicting..
If Apple comment all these topics with the same problem on discussions board, would be really great,
but they won't for sure
Keep hope))

Why do my two external hard drives require "ejection" upon shutdown?

Problem solved. I had plugged in my external hard drives into a USB card. I switched my two printers to the USB card and plugged in the two hard drives into the computer's USB outlets and now NO improper eject messages. What a relief!!! Thanks again.

• I have just bought a 16gb Ipad Mini retina . Is there a way of extending saving a document or photo to a SD card or external hard drive

Hi
I am a complete novice and just bought my first Apple product a Ipad Mini Retina 16gb . On reflection if I had been wiser ( and/or richer!) I would have bought the 32gb versi instead for recording audio , storing photo's and documents .
But I have ton make do with what I have got so Is there a way ( a work a round) of saving these files instead where capacity is a problem on a SD card or external hard drive using the lighting connector ?
Thanks

. There is no analog I/O pins available on Audigy 2. Only way to get it working the way you want is to split those I/Os found from back of the card. Here is a project running solving this matter, so you may want to follow it's progress.
There are also couple threads talking 'bout this matter of yours.
2. You can control treble and bass from software you're using or if you play games (only) then from
- Creative Surround Mixer
- CTPanel (can be found on driver installations)
- Control Panel: Sounds And Multimedia properties: Audio tab --> Play Control : Volume slider: Advenced
All these above affects sound Globally.

• All DVD's inserted, self eject and don't play, why?

When I try to insert a blank or recorded DVD in my iMac it self ejects and won't play, is there a problem with settings or does anyone know how to fix it?

Another help source (if you haven't already done so).
Go to your OS Help Menu. In the search field type dvd
Click on all the troubleshooting topics & Support Articles that pertain to your issue.
You can also do the same in Disk Utility. Open same up.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.
This will bring up the Help Menu.

• External HDD: Shows not ejected properly when the drive is still present

Hi,
I have a Seagate 500 GB external HD, the big one with power adapter. I connect to my MBP with a USB cable. Recently, every now and then, I am seeing the message "Your external disk was not ejected properly. Always make sure you eject blah blah..." even when the disk is firmly planted onto the Mac. I can see the disk in my desktop and finder. But keep getting this message nevertheless.
Another observation is - If I have Picasa open, Picasa fails to load the pictures in the external HDD when this happens. Pictures that has been earlier added to Picasa library, that is, which should ideally show up when the HDD is connected.
Any ideas?

Try a different USB cable. If that doesn't work, go to Seagate's web site and open a tech support request with them. If a new USB cable doesn't help, there is probably a problem with that disk drive such as outdated firmware.

• [solved] External drive automatically mounted as read-only

Hi folks,
I have a strange issue with an external drive automatically mounted as read-only whenever I plug it to my laptop :
[sclarckone@archLaptop ~]$ mount
/dev/sdb1 on /run/media/sclarckone/dd type ntfs (ro,nosuid,nodev,relatime,uid=1000,gid=100,fmask=0177,dmask=077,nls=utf8,errors=continue,mft_zone_multiplier=1,uhelper=udisks2)
And I can't remount it as read-write :
[sclarckone@archLaptop ~]$ sudo mount -o remount,rw /dev/sdb1
mount: cannot remount /dev/sdb1 read-write, is write-protected
But of course, I'm able to mount it as read-write on other operating systems.
I have udisks and udisks2 installed on my system. I also belong to the storage group so I thought I could mount a filesystem as a normal user but I can't :
[sclarckone@archLaptop ~]$ mount /dev/sdb1 dd/
mount: only root can do that
I don't know whether it is relevant to this problem, but I have systemd and polkit installed as well... Does anybody has an idea of where the problem could come from ?
Thanks for your help !

Check out following file :
/usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.udisks.policy
Look for mount a device and It should have configuration like :
<action id="org.freedesktop.udisks.filesystem-mount">

Mount a device

Montér en enhed

• Ipod self ejects?

Hi, I have had my ipod for about 10 months now and have never had a serious issue with it that a simple reset could not fix.
however, the last time I plugged in my ipod to my computer it did as normal and appeared in 'my computer' and itunes, and the 'do not disconnect' logo flashed on the screen, but given a few seconds my ipod disappeared from 'my computer' and the ‘do not disconnect’ message left and it went to the ipod’s main menu, it continued to charge the battery, but it stayed in itunes, when I attempted to update my songs using itunes it gave me the error message:
"The ipod 'nulls ipod' cannot be updated, the disk can not be read or written to'
which effectively means its not plugged in. but it was, i have tried resetting, and i can't attempt to restore or format my ipod because it self ejects itself after about 10 seconds, if i try to restore it using ipod updater it says 'unable to mount ipod'.
It could be that my ipod USB cable is faulty. But it’s unlikely that it would suddenly start playing up, it’s worked fine for 10 or so months.
Please I have been trying to get my ipod to work for awhile now it’s a real hassle not to have it handy, and im not to eager to send it in to get it serviced, as when my mate did that it just got really messy.

You are not alone. Thousands have this problem, on various models of Macs. Short answer, it has something to do with the disk going to sleep (possibly?). You can't do anything about it and Apple won't address the problem. Maybe you should buy a time capsule. Just keep giving them money and use their proprietary equipment.
For a more complete answer, see this thread (all 65+ pages of it with NO SOLUTION IN SIGHT... except for some 3rd party solutions that sometimes work, sometimes don't): Disk Drive ejecting itself
