A co-worker put an SDHC card in the DVD slot of our work's iMac.  How in the heck am I supposed to get it out?
Let me stress: A co-worker.  Not me.  Seriously.

Some people have had luck by shutting it down, unplugging it, and then holding it with the slot down and very gently shake it a bit. Or, take it to the Genius Bar!
Also, please make sure your profile is correct - it's showing a PPC and a very old OS.

I put the camera memory card into the DVD slot How can I get it out

You'll be pleased to know you're not the first (or last) to do this .
Have a look at this old thread, Cathy 1956's tip on page 1 seems to work for a lot of people:

Worth reading the whole thread as other people have chimed in with other ways of extracting the disk.

  • HT204384 I mistakenly put my SD camera memory card in the dvd slot on my iMac.  Any ideas on how to get it out??

My small SD Card was mistakenly put in the larger CD/DVD slot.  I cannot eject or pop out.  I can't see it.  I turned computer off and tipped on side to see if it would fall out...no luck.  How can I remove it from the inside of the CD/DVD slot?

Then you should do a little research, start with a search of this forum, you will find many successful removals of the SD card using this method. It's easy to find them, just look on the right side of your screen for the heading 'More Like This'
Here is a link to the first one. Memory card & how to retrieve from  inside iMac!!
The fact that the optical drive is a sealed unit means that your solution will not help with removing the SD card from the drive, unless you were going to suggest breaking the drive open, after dismantling the iMac. Which is a very difficult task.
    Bad advice I would say.

  • HT1750 How to remove an object from the DVD slot

I accidentally inserted an SD card into the DVD slot.  Can someone tell me how to safely remove the SD card?Quest

The solution here also can work for a SD, just flip the Mac over to get the SD to "land" on the card stock.

  • Someone not me put a flash drive in the dvd slot   any ideas on how to get it out?

Someone not me of course put a fash card into the dvd slot.  its in the computer how could i get it out?

Can also use a slim set of tweezers to try to pull it out. Just be careful, so you don't damage the drive any. Hopefully, it's not already damaged by the flash card being put in.

  • How do I get  camera memory card out of the DVD slot?

How do I get  camera memory card out of the DVD slot?

Well, for one thing it shouldn't be in the DVD slot. You can try turning the computer on it's side and see if you can coax it out, but otherwise you will need to take it in for service because the computer has to be disassembled.

  • An SD card accidentally fell into the DVD slot. Any easy eay to retrieve it?

An SD card accidentally fell into the DVD slot of my imac. Is there an easy way to get it out ?

If you are extremely careful you may be able to use gravity to remove the SD card from the optical drive slot. Here's how I did it using two people, one to hold the iMac, and one to gently guide the SD card through the optical drive slot. Do so at your own risk. Take it in to a trained professional if you have any concerns about damaging the iMac.
    1) Carefully inspect the optical drive slot. Recessed inside the slot you will see a grey cloth looking 'cloth' cover over the slot. This cover is split down the middle to allow the disc to pass through. It helps keep dust out of the iMac. It it this cover that you will need to open in order for the SD card to be removed.
    2) Place a towel onto a table to protect the iMac's finish.
    3) Ask your helper to turn the iMac on its side resting on the towell for support. The iMac's optical drive slot should be hanging out over the edge of the table so that you can access it.
    4) Use a couple of business cards or a stack of 6 Post-It-Notes as a tool to slide into the slot to locate and remove the SD card.  IMPORTANT: DO NOT insert the paper tool more than 1/2 inch into the optical drive. The paper tools must not touch the optical pickup assembly.
Here are some other methods that people have used:

  • Won't really see a video card in the PCI slots

I have a G4 MDD 1.23 GHz. I have a 32 MB video card in the AGP slot, but I also have 2 PCI 128 MB video cards lying around.
Every time I try to throw a PCI video card in, though, I have problems. The image is only 640 x 480 grayscale, nothing else. I tried to change the settings, but those are the only options.
I have a 3DFX Voodoo 2 and a TwinTurbo 128. Do I need drivers? Does the MDD not support video cards in the PCI slots? What's wrong with this picture?

For what it's worth, here's a few quotes:

Why did Apple get rid of the DVD slot in the MacBook Pro?

Because relatively few people used it and Apple wanted to decrease the size/price of the computers.

  • Can you put the small DVD discs from a camcorder in the DVD slot of the iMac?

Stupid question...can you put the small DVDs from a camcorder in the DVD slot of the iMac?

That could be a challenge. If I am not mistaken that camera strictly records to DVD - RW and has no digital output connectors, is that right?
My only experience with a camera like that was a bad one. I was able to get the video off the disc using a tray-loading iMac but it was painfully slow.
iMovie (for example) is designed to work with camcorders such as those specified in this reference:
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/cameras/en/index.html
I cannot find the DCR-DVD92 in that database
You might consider finding an external USB slot-loading DVD drive, but as I say my experience was painfully slow, and you might run into file format compatibility challenges.
I am sure it's possible but it won't be as easy as importing video from something like an iPad or iPhone. I still use a camcorder on occasion but it has a FireWire port. That's easy.

  • What is open firmware command to boot a Powerbook G4 from a CF card in the PCMCIA slot?

I have a Powerbook G4 Titanium with a bad motherboard that will no longer power the internal hard drive. I want to to install an OS and boot from a CF card in the PCMCIA slot. I understand this has to be done from Openfirmware, but I cannot figure out the command to do it.Does anyone know?

    Charles,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
What I've found so far is a non-Apple solution drivers.
I assume you've found the IO Xperts driver. (http://www.ioxperts.com/products/80211b_X.html)
Is there an Apple developed solution out
    there for third party cards?
Not exactly. Apple uses the Broadcom chipset. Some third-party manufacturers also use the Broadcom chipset and those cards would then work with the AirPort drivers. Here is a link to a list of wireless cards that note the chipset, OS and driver.
    http://home.earthlink.net/~metaphyzx/Wireless.htm
(Note: the list is dated August 2005.)
Manufacturers change their chipset so the version number of the card will make a difference. For example, the list shows that the Linksys WPC54G uses the Broadcom chipset. Well, that is true with version 1. Version 2 uses a Texas Instrument chipset and version 4 uses the Inprocomm chipset, which means these two do not work with the AirPort Driver.
I use the Linksys WPC54GS v1.0 (SpeedBooster) that uses Broadcom. It was plug 'n play.
It is hard to get an original Airport card today.
A quick search found a number of sellers, but they cost 2-to-3 times more than a third party card. (I didn't check eBay.) A third-party card also avails you to the faster option of 802.11g.
    Hope this helps.
