SD Card Reader issues - 2011 MBP i7

The last couple of days i began using the SD Card slot (didnt for the first few weeks of picking up the new Mac) and noticed some random inconsistencies with the SD Card Reader.
I have two SD Cards I tried that both exhibit the same issue:
16GB PNY Class-6 SDHC -&- 1GB Lexar SD
I tried them in two (2) 13" 2009 MBP's and they worked flawlessly each time; Insert either card, eject re-inster it again - all fine shows up i can access files, no problem.
with the 15" 2011 i7 2.2ghz - regardless of card they do the same behaviors; i plug an SD card in, sometimes it will show up...then eject it..then may or may not appear the next time.
Try the second card, same thing.
Sometimes they fail to show up regardless multiple times.
however they all work in cameras and USB card readers fine.
(also when plugged into the computer via Camera or USB Card Reader, they appear).
I've done the following;
repair permissions, rebooted, PRAM reset, updated to the special 10.6.7 for 2011 MacBook Pro's, etc.
Cards are fine, something out of whack with the SD Card Reader I imagine.
One thing I did notice the difference between the 2009 13" MBP and the 2011 15" MBP is the SD card connectors are more gold plated on the 2009 13" while he 2011 15" isnt fully gold - which im not sure if that has any bearing on the issue or if its that they changed from being on the USB bus to being on the PCIe Bus?
Thanks for any suggestions

Mine had problem too. But the 10.6.8 update fixed this problem on my mac

  • Macbook Pro - SD Card Reader Issues Solved!

I recently purchased a gently used, early 2011 MBP. I've had it for a few months, but I did not try using the SD card reader until last week... so much for kicking the tires. Long story short, the darn thing did not recognize or mount one single SD card out of a handful of cards, and at least 3 different card manufacturers all used with my Canon DSLR. I searched the net trying to find a solution and tried everything from sticking the card in at a some strange and ridiculous slant to shutting the computer down three different ways and resetting the System Management Controller (SMC); nothing worked. So today I spent 25 minutes or so chatting with an apple care specialist and they (Jim the apple care guru) finally came up with a solution, even though I'm sure neither one of us knows exactly why it worked. So here goes...
Put your SD card in a external card reader, once it's mounted go to disk utilities and reformat (erase) the drive to Mac OS Extended. Take it out of your external reader and put it in the built-in reader on your Mac. Now, of course, it will no longer work in your camera or most other devices so you'll have to format it again in your device of choice. However, here's the kicker... once I did l all of that and took some quick pics, I put it back in my MBP and it popped right up even after a reboot. But wait there's more.... I then put the SD card in my wife's work laptop (PC running Win8) and played with the files for a bit, then stuck it back in the Mac and it still recognized it. So there goes the "windows screws up the formatting myth).
So naturally I assumed that I would be forced to go through this double formatting process for all of my SD cards (and I have a lot), but then it happened! A Christmas miracle in October. I tried a second card, and then a third and a fourth and a fifth, etc... AND now they ALL pop up just like they should. Without reformatting or any other humanly changed processes. Yep... There you have it, it makes no sense. But it works ;)
Somehow formatting just one card in the card reader "woke up" the whole process, almost like my MBP was like, hmmm I was wondering what you kept sticking inside that's slot of mine...
Hope this helps someone. Sorry for the rant :)

Anyone else with card reader issues should read this page. Just because your card reader doesn't appear to be working or has mysteriously dropped off your system doesn't necessarily mean a logic board replacement. I've repaired several portables over the years that had been quoted for costly logic board replacements, when in fact the failures were relatively easy to resolve once you understood the real problem.
It's common belief a PRAM or SMC reset should fix all hardware glitches but sometimes it just doesn't go deep enough, as I found out with my 2011 MBP. Simply removing the battery was all it took to resurrect my seemingly dead card reader, when PRAM and SMC resets failed to have any impact on the problem.

  • Ideapad U160 - Internal Card Reader Issue After Sleep

    Hi All.
I've just purchased a Lenovo U160 and I've not been able to solve an issue with the internal card reader. It's a "Realtek USB 2.0 Card Reader" internally wired to the motherboard.
When I got the laptop, I put a Momentus XT in it and installed Windows. I've tried using the drivers that were included on the Lenovo recovery partition, the ones on their website, and the ones direct from Realtek with no success.
The problem is, when my laptop resumes from sleep mode, I get a fair few "new USB device" noises and about the same number of "USB device not recognized" errors. If I look in the device manager when this happens, the card reader is no longer there, and I have an "Unknown Device".
After a shut down, or a reboot, it's back again.
I've tried another clean install of Windows but I'm still having the same issue (I've applied KB974476 and KB978258 before installing the drivers).
There are no sleep options in the BIOS, it's very basic. I am running out of ideas..
    Any thoughts?

  • Card Reader issue on Qosmio F50-10Z

I have had this issue for a while, It began with the original os Vista 32 bit, so i decided to buy the toshiba upgrade cd for windows 7, after upgrading everything worked fine, except the card reader, no matter how many times i installed/uninstalled,installed the driver it would not work!.
So I used the recovery cd, not once BUT TWICE, and to no avail i sent it off to repair.
I got a message on a piece of paper telling me it would work on the original os, i thought they had fixed something.
So i used the recovery cd yet AGAIN, and to my short lifted excitement of seeing no yellow explanation marks i put in a micro sd card (2gb) which initially worked when i first bought this laptop, and got no response.
The bigger problem is my warranty is now finished!, So basicly i have been BUMPED OVER, cause the memory card slot is NOT WORKING, and it wasnt an software related problem!
    Any reccomendations?.

    Hi karimtarek,
Which driver version you are using on Vista and Windows 7? My Qosmio F50 is running Windows 7 and Im using driver version 1.00.29.02 from the Toshiba page.
Are you using the same version?
Furthermore it would be interesting to know if the SD card slot worked after you got the notebook from service center back. Have you tested this before or have you started recovery installation immediately?
Have you tried different brand of SD cards? I always use SanDisk Extreme cards because they never made any problems.
Furthermore you could try updating the BIOS. Maybe it works if you using a pretty old version
Last but not least if its still not work and you think its a hardware malfunction, ask the service centre again. If you speak a little bit with technicians, maybe they can repair it as a gesture of goodwill.
    Good luck! :)

  • SD Card Reader issue

I've read a slew of posts on this issue, and tried the fixes to no avail.  My card reader was working (first time ever used) on Aug 2.
On Aug 3, it's not working.
I've tried 3 different cards in it that all work in other devices.  I've tried micro sd as well as standard size sd cards.I bought this system on Dec 2, 2014 preloaded with Windows 8.1. My system is completely up to date on its Windows Updates. (I hid the windows ten thingy because I don't want it til they get the problems worked out) It's a C75D-B7260Toshiba Part # PSCLEU-003002The current driver for the RealTek PCIE card reader is 10.0.10130.29089 dated 6-1-2015. I've completely uninstalled thru device manager and then rebooted and reinstalled, which goes successfully. It's always appeared as a device in device manager - but still nothing. I've also tried just disabling, then enabling.  Still Nothing.   This is the 6th Toshiba I've purchased over many years, and the first one to give me issues like this. I've never called toshiba tech support and now I find out that I have to pay for it if I do??  ABSURD on an issue like this. HELP!! Is it possible that this link might help someone with this?  If so, please tell me step by step how to get this installed from the windows KB. MSKB No activity when card inserted

You could also Refresh Windows, of course. But that would involve reinstalling programs. Upgrading to Windows 10 is another possibility. In 30 years of computing (started with the C64) I've never had to restore a system back to "out of the box" status. That scares me more than dealing with the registry, and I know it's  just the opposite for most people.  I haven't stayed up with the industry in the past 5-6 years so I feel kind of lost when it comes to laptops, tablets and such. I've never had one apart,  whereas I've had desktop systems in pieces on the dining room table while building or fixing. Reinstalling certain programs is a royal pain,  so I pass on that option for now. As for win 10, no way am I putting that on my system until they get the bugs worked out. Some are having big troubles, and some are gliding thru just fine. Issues with nvidia equipment, task bar issues and more that I'm not willing to deal with. I already uninstalled KB3035583 and turned off automatic update installs to try and avoid MS 'pushing' 10 on me until I want it. Teri

  • Lightning SD card reader issue with iOS7

    Hello,
I have updated yesterday to iOS7 and been impressed to the smooth finish and the handling. Way better then previous versions.
    Only downside are the accessories.
I have had no issues with my lighning SD card reader on previous iOS Versions but today I tried to connect it and it said that it is not supported by iPad.
It is an original lightning adapter bought at an Apple shop in Singapore and I cannot imagine that it is not supported by Apple anymore.
I have already rebooted the system a few times and got it working once for a short while until it broke down again with the same error message. I tried as well different SD cards as I thought is might have been an issue with the SD card.
Can anyone help me to fix that issue. Did I miss any setting or does anyone had the same issue?
Thank you for your assistance in advance.

    Hi
I am using lightning to SD card reader on my iPad mini with iOS 7.
Mine still works, and is surely genuine as I purchased from Apple retail store in Australia however, the reader is now extraordinarily slow to load image previews from the card. Where this was previously near instantaneous on iOS 6, the image previews take 1-2secs to load EACH which is completely ridiculous.
    Very frustrating!!!
    Apple please fix this.

  • Sony Card reader issues

    Hello,
We just purchased a MacBook Pro, 11.3 and have moved all data to new laptop and we have one issue, the Sony card reader does not work on the new laptop. The old laptop is a MacBook Pro from 2010'ish, fairly surprised that a USB device which works on one system doesnt work on another. The Sony card reader is Model MRW62E, dated 2012, I think it is USB v2.0, 5v, etc.
Is this just a case of a reader no longer working/supported by a new design?
Does someone know of a CF & SD card reader that works with the new Mac Book Pros?
    Thanks
    Erick

No software is required. What specifically are you trying to do? If connected to a camera some cameras require a setting to see the images on the camera and it does not work for all camera. If using the card in the connector it only sees photos and videos if they are in a directory titled DCIM in the root directory. Also, do you have a case? The kit connectors are large and the case can prevent proper seating of the connector in the ipad.

I want to get this card reader running.. I remember that Debian was about to get it working (its lights were coming up when inserted a card into the slot) but it couldn't be able to create a node for it..
Any way, Arch doesn't even recognise the card I input.. Dmesg doesn't even a message for card insertion.. Anybody has an idea what should I do ? Thanks a lot..

Try either sdhci (included in kernel 2.6.17)
    modprobe sdhci

  • Card Reader issues

Satellite A355D-S6930 with Windows 7 64 bit. The card reader will work when I first start the computer but once I remove it it will not read it again until I restart the system. This is really annoying. It is the built-in and the card is a 4gb SDHC class 6 card. I've reinstalled the drivers several times and even updated the BIOS a few days ago.

No software is required. What specifically are you trying to do? If connected to a camera some cameras require a setting to see the images on the camera and it does not work for all camera. If using the card in the connector it only sees photos and videos if they are in a directory titled DCIM in the root directory. Also, do you have a case? • What could my card reader issue be?

    Context:
PowerMac Dual G4 with 10.3.9, Sakar Digital Concepts CR-35M SD/MMC USB card reader/writer, SanDisk 512MB SD Card, SanDisk 1.0GB SD card.
    Background:
Normally, the card reader works fine with our 512MB SanDisk SD cards. They mount and show up in Finder fine. iPhoto is another story, see,http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=365178&tstart=0. The inlaws are in, and well, they have a 1.0GB SanDisk SD card. When it gets inserted, the card reader's light goes out, then about 20 seconds later it comes back on again, but the card does not mount. I tried two different USB busses, the built in one and the added PCI one. My wife happened to have her work computer booted and available. So, for argument sake, I plugged the reader and 1.0GB card into that Windoze machine, and it worked fine. Are there any insights into what might be wrong?
    Later today:
When I return home today, I will try to see how it works on the kid's G3, also running 10.3.9, and I will check with the neighbor, running 10.4.6.

Answer: logic board was frazzling everything.

  • Card Reader Issues on 10.9.1

I have a usb 2.0 card reader and it will only mount the cf/sd cards about 5% of the time on 10.9.1(15in). Nothing shows up in Disk Utility and when I try it on my older macbook the reader works every time. When i restart the computer the reader light comes on so I know the computer reckonizes something is plugged in.

yea - good luck.  I installed Maverick X into a fully operating Mac Pro 15" - i lost the DVD drive, back up drive, and SD reader.  using the "ibook" patch the DVD and external harddrive "returned" but the SD card is still missing.
it shows up if you hard start, but after that its gone again.
Apple tech support is worthless. to attached to the bong to provide answers.  they want me to pay to have my computer "fixed" - it wasnt broken till i uploaded Mav X
its pretty obvious that the new Maverick is designed for new devices - that do not include DVD, and SD card readers.  its pretty obvious they want youto rely exclusively on the icloud

  • Hard Drive Formatting Issues - 2011 MBP

I have a late 2011 Macbook pro that started acting up a few weeks ago.  Took it to an Apple store for a consultation and they came to the conclusion that part of my hard-drive not functioning properly.  It just so happened to be the portion that had the bootup info on it (according to the tech).  Rather than pay to have Apple install a new drive, I decided to go for it on my own as I've built more than a dozen PC's over the last 3 years, swapping out a hard drive is not a big deal to me.  Even the tech at the store told me I shouldn't have any issues.
So I disconnected the battery, installed the new drive, inserted the disk that came with my MBP and I get nothing but a grey screen after the DVD drive makes noise reading the DVD for several minutes.  I did some searching online and found that I could try to download the disk via holding Command + R at startup (just in case something on the physical DVD wasn't reading properly).  The Command + R function shows me my wifi, connects, and downloads what it needs to, but I once again end up with nothing, but a grey or blue screen.  I've tried two hard drives, both with the DVD and Command + R function several times now to no avail.
Am I missing a step here or could there be something else wrong with my machine?  Are there any other utilities built into the machine I could be running?
I installed a Western Digital 7200 RPM, 500GB drive.  Same specs as my original drive, but different manufacturer.  I researched and found several other reviews of people using this drive in MBP's.
I re-formatted the original drive a few years back with the same DVD and no issues.  I have no backups or other drives to go off of.  I was running Windows 7 through boot-camp.  Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your suggestions.   It is definitely not a dirty disk, damaged disk, or the optical drive.  If the optical drive or disk had anything to do with the issue at hand, a remote recovery from Apple's servers (Command +R) would have worked (failed several times - it connects to Apple's servers and downloads the recovery, but screen goes blue or grey the same as it does with the DVD, after the download completes and when recovery tries to initialize).
Like I said in my last post (that was edited by the mods, probably bc I linked the class action site).  The issue here is a failed GPU on the Logic Card.  Genius got it wrong here when I went to the store.  If I felt like wasting any more of my time and money I'd take the scrapheap to the store and let them put in a new hard drive and pay their labor to then be told after the fact that I need a new logic board.
After reading the other thread (Macbook Pro (15" early 2011) horizontal lines on screen and not booting...?) - and reading ALL PAGES, I'm certain the hard drive was never the issue here.  The thread I linked explains several others having the same symptoms my laptop started with (the screen jumping around and lines on the screen) before complete failure of the system.  Several others in that thread have had the same problems trying to reformat as I am having.  The symptoms and results are all the same.  There is a class action lawsuit ongoing for this issue as there have been many hardware failures on these GPUs from this model year.  The Hardware checks I'm running and the ones Genius ran simply didn't pick up on the issue.  Others in that thread have even had replacements fail and the replacements only carry a 90 day warranty.  At this point, it's a 3 year old machine that needs a new logic board, and a new battery, not a worthwhile investment of $300-$500 in my opinion.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • MBP doesn't see usb card reader

I have a MAUSB-10 card reader and my MBP doesn't see it. It's usb and was plugged into my xp box, but I'm trying to switch everything over to mac and this is a major stumbling block. Anyone have any ideas as to how I can get the MBP to see the reader..... cmd line force? anything!?!
    Thank you in advance.

I just tried a Sandisk USB 2.0 Card Reader/Writer for Sony style memory stick. Model SDDR-170-A10M. My 15" MacBook Pro will not mount the memory stick on the desktop. I have a support e-mail into Sandisk, but I am wondering if there is anything I can do to make this work in the meantime?
I am seeing no Apple Mac OSX specific drivers. The device did come with a Windows driver software mini-cd-disc. Which I beleive I couldn't use on my internal CD drive anyway.
Any thoughts out there would be much appreciated!
BTW an SIIG, Inc. ExpressCard 11-in-1 R/W card does work! I just thought the Sandisk "thumb-drive" style R/W device would be a more universal way to work between computers.

  • Sd card reader on MBP not recognizing SD card

The SD card reader on my MBP is not recognizing a new SD card.  I have tried taking it out and putting it back in.  I looked in disk utility, but do not see it listed.  "I also tried image capture.  What else can I try?

If you have photos on the SD card try using Image Capture to download the photos to a folder on the Desktop before you reformat the card with the camera.

I have a MacBook Pro 13" Early 2011 with OS X 10.8.2.  The reader has been working until now.  I have tried several different cards with no luck.  After searching the community board I tried both an SMC reset and a PRAM reset but no luck.  (When I look in Disk Utility, I do not see the built in card reader.)  Any suggestions?
