SD Card Slot / USB Ports

I have a....
Model: G62-b29SA
Product: XF339EA#ABU
Serial: [Personal Information Removed]
I have had the notebook for the last 5 years and so far the notebook has been amazing and never ever let me down, however....
Recently the SD card slot on the left, no longer recognises any SD cards either size or brand.
In addition, the USB slots x 3 (2 on the left and 1 on the right) do not recognise any SD card reader with a SD in it.
** The top right and bottom left recognises my white SDHC integral SD card reader as the red light comes on, but then the red light goes off. Once off, "My Computer" recognises another drive, but when clicked, the notebook asked for something to be plugged in.
The USB port on the top left and top right, recognises my USB connected portable hard drive.
*** I have googled the condition and I have completed the following...
1. Right clicked and deleted ALL USB slots in device manager and reinstalled.
2. I have deleted ALL windows updates for 2014, in case these updates dis-armed the SD card slot and USB slots.
3. I have also downloaded and updated the BIOS with the latest edition from the HP.com website.
I am now at a loss, with the SD card reader slot not recognising any size or brand SD card and the USB slots do not recognise any SC card reader plugged in, but read my external hard drive.
Could I ask if anyone has any suggestions or maybe downloaded the drivers at the date of the original purchase.

Try reinstalling the media card reader driver software for your operating system from the download section of the support portal for your notebook.

Your notebook has three usb 3.0 ports. Have you connected a device that draws more than 100mA to one of the ports? That could overload the port and make it inoperative. Some ports can be limited to 50 mA. It depends on the notebook's systemboard design. High power usb devices that are optionally powered by an external power supply should always be used with an external power supply. There are limits to the power capacity of the traces on the notebook's systemboard.

Using a PCI card INTERNAL USB port

Hello to anyone reading this !
I've just installed a PCI card in my G5 in order to add more USB ports. When I started searching for one, i was surprised to see most had an internal port, I couldn't really see the use of that. A friend told me it can be used on PCs to plug an extension towards a free port in front of the main unit.
Considering i can't do this on my G5, I was wondering how to take advantage of this internal port and I'd like to know if I can plug my USB Bluetooth adapter, as it doens't need to be visible and it would free one of my external ports. The question is, are there some security restrictions regarding what you put INSIDE the unit? Isn't it too hot inside to leave the bluetooth key or anything else that is not designed to be inside?
Does anyone have any advice?

With all the airflow in a G5, I don't think heat will be a problem, but a Bluetooth unit probably will not be useful inside a shielded metal case. The Apple Bluetooth card connects to an antenna wire that goes outside the shielded section, but I don't think there is any way to connect that wire to the USB Bluetooth module.

Sd card reader & USB port (right side only) not working

I recently purchased a Macbook Pro 15" retina display with OS Moutain Lion. The SD card reader and USB port on the right side of the computer do not work. I've restarted the computer numerous times, tried to reimage the computer with the Control+R during restart (didn't allow for update because Mountain Lion was loaded on the system), and downloaded with the latest updates but they still do not work. I am currently deployed to Afghanistan so Apple Support calling me back isn't going to work. Any help would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, I do not own a 2 gig mem card to test with. What perplexes me is that when I watch device manager and open properties boxes for the USB dev, SMSC-2228 dev, and the newly created disks, the Win XP drivers do indeed load, but watching it do so is sloooooooowwwwwww. Slow as in 3 - 5 minutes for the win drivers to load in place. Funny thing is, an xD mem card or Memory stick initialize, set up properly in a matter of at most 5 - 10 seconds or so. The only card type I have a problem with is THE MOST COMMON ONE, the SD card. Maybe a Micro/Mickey soft thing? Some info I found on the SMSC controller claims it supports the larger sd card sizes, so I think this is a Micro / Mickey soft thing. I guess I need to search for some better drivers somewhere.

IPad no longer recognizing CF card through USB port

I'm a photographer, Using a USB cable to a CF card reader, I can import and view my images via the iPad. This not only is easily done, Lexar's president has a video on Youtube demonstrating this.
I've used this feature regularly for several events.
However just recently the iPad has simply stopped recognizing the USB reader and said that there isn't enough power to do this.
So from 7/4-2010 through Friday,7/23 I was able to import images via this daisylink chain. Then on Saturday 7/24 I was no longer able to do this.
The iPad does seem to be losing battery power more quickly than when I first got it, so my assumption is that it is a mechanical thing and the iPad battery is defective.
Any thoughts? Please remember, this function operated smoothly for a month, and is described regularly in another company's marketing materials, and no changes to the iPad have taken place.

Have you tried making sure the iPad is fully charged before doing this? I suppose so.

Forgot to mention that I already tried following kernel parameters (acpi=routeirq, noirqdebug, pci=msi, irqpoll, irqfixup) of which only noirqdebug worked (as to say that IRQ #16 was not disables, so my keyboard did work), but which caused a decrease in graphics performance (low fps rates (shells refresh slowly), tearing).

there are many reports about intel chipset systems having the same problem after kernel 2.6.38 / 2.6.39 .
you basically have 2 options :
1. If you want to have all usb ports available:
test with the LTS kernel 2.6.32.48, verify it doesn't have those problems (99% sure)
stick to LTS-kernel atleast until the problem is solved in the mainline kernel
2. Disable / don't use the problem ports.
your system has multiple USB controllers :

test which / how many ports do work
If there are not enough usb ports working, your system has several pci express slots.
you could consider purchasing a pci express extension card with usb ports.
While it may use the same driver, it will get a different irq.

After re-installing OSX Lion neither USB Ports work

I have a Macbook Pro 15" Intel Core i7 Mid 2010 model, I had upgraded from the App Store to OSX Lion and was running ok, but at the time had half the disk partitioned into Windows, so got to the stage that I didn't want Windows so wiped it, and backed up the OSX Partition as I figured why not have a nice fresh OSX Lion install . . . . BIG MISTAKE
Since I've re-installed OSX Lion I now have no connectivity through the 2 USB Ports, or the SD Card as far as I can tell.
Since I'm a month out of the warranty I don't exist to Apple Support any more, so I've been trying everything I can think of or any suggestions I can find.
I've tried the PRAM and SMC resets which obviously don't work, I've tried the old 3+2 key trick - yup, you guessed it, NOTHING.
I have re-installed Lion 3 times, same deal - feck all is being recognised.
I've resorted to sticking a small Windows partition on at the moment to make sure it's not hardware issue, not sure what else I've tried?? Oh yeah, took it apart, removed the battery for an hour or so, even tried booting with no battery - nothing.
Any suggestions other than playing frisbee would be welcome, although, to be fair, I might end up having a game of that if this carries on ...

Ok, so been to the Genius Bar and basically they went through everything I had done already just to test it, and then also their own in-house hardware test that apparently only they can run, which is fair enough - all tests came back reporting the board in fine condition, and that the SD Card and USB Ports were fine, no errors.
So, we tested again after another PRAM/NVRAM and SMC Reset - still nothing - so he took it away and ran it on their other diagnostic machine which reset all the firmware and put it all back on again, testing at each stage and yet still nothing.
Basically I need a new Logic Board which will cost £400-£500 to replace, I know what you're thinking, and I am too, how brilliant is that!! .... Not very, but hey, what can I do?
Next stop, home insurance, I'm sure I pay you for some reason ... wish me luck!
Oh, I am going to try one more Lion install, just for the **** of it.

Titanium and USB ports - need more

My wife has one of these great compouters! There are only 2 USB ports in which she currently has the mouse and a musical keyboard named Eiderol plugged. Both device get power from the USB port. I just got her a HP LasrJet 1022 printer, which is also a USB device. However, it does not draw its power from the port.
What I want to do is install a hub or some other device that will allow me to use the 3 devices on the 2 ports. Can someone please recommend a solution?

Your best bet is to go with a PC Card (PCMCIA Card) with USB ports. For not a lot of cash you'll be able to not only add more USB ports to your TiBook, but you'll also be able to add USB 2.0, which is significantly faster than the TiBook's typical USB ports. And USB 2.0 is backwards compatible with USB 1.0 devices. Finally, many of today's perhipherals use USB 2.0 to connect, since it's also faster than even Firewire 800.
I think that you can get PC Cards that include USB 2.0 AND Firewire 800,if I'm not mistaken. Here's a link to a very good, informative post in these forums on this topic:

Failed USB port - unable to transfer playlists to new computer

I am trying to move my I Tunes Library to a new computer after the wireless card and USB ports on my laptop stopped working. I have synced my deices to the new laptop and all my playlists are on my phone.....any suggestions on how I can get my playlists back? Thanks! Am using I Phone 5.....Windows 8 on the new laptop.

USB ports and memory card slots not working

My Pavilion a6120n desktop has worked brilliantly ever since I purchased it. As of last week the 2 usb ports in the front and the 2 unused usb ports in the back have stopped working. My printer is plugged into one rear port and my wireless mouse is plugged into a second rear port and these work fine. I generally use a memory stick for data swapping or the card reader slots (which have also stopped working). I no longer see the memory card icons in the "Computer" window. When installing something new the "New Hardware Found" statement pops up but the driver install always fails. I think it is a software issue but there are no usb drivers to download on the HP/support site that I can find. . . so . . . Below is what I have tried so far.Run antivirus software. Full scan & memory scan - no issuesRun malewarebytes full scan - no issues I have tried restarting several times with no success. Restore to several previous restore points = failedRestarting computer in repair mode = failedRun the repair disk that I had made = failedChecked the power management for each usb port to see if the power was routed properly = okRemoved the case cover and carefully inspected the wiring and connectors.finally I tried uninstalling the usb drivers = failed Upon restarting the computer the last time the startup file must have failed and after several hours of attempting a repair I had to reinstall the Window 7 completely. My USB ports and SD card slot aren't working!

My USB ports and SD card slot haven't been working on my MacBook Pro for a couple of months now, and I have taken it into Future shop to get it fixed under my warranty. Unfortunately my warranty was expired by a month (Oops), and the associate helping me said that there was no power getting to the ports because it had something to do with the circuit board, and that it would cost $900.00 to get it repaired. I can still charge my MacBook, and the CD hardrive works completely fine.
My goal is get my MacBook repaired for little or no cost. I was wondering if anyone knows a solution to this, or how much it would cost me to get it repaired at the Apple store.

What version of OS X is the Macbook Pro running?
In OS 10.8, you can do this:
With the iPod connected, go to Apple Menu / About This Mac / More Info / System Report.
click on USB under Hardware (in the left column).
Does the iPod appear anywhere on the right hand side (USB Device Tree)?

USB Port Expansion Card for SDXC Slot?

Are there any? I've seen plenty of 4-port USB PMCIA expansion cards... they're not compatible though, are they?

Not for the SD card slot. That's really a very limited, single-purpose device, not adaptable to the great variety of devices that PCMCIA or ExpressCard slots can serve.

USB Ports & USB Card Bus Adapter

I have a Satellite A15-S127 that I bought brand new when they were released the end of May, 2003. In general, it has and still does run great. A few years back I went from using WindowsXP Home, which came pre-installed, to WindowsXP Pro. Just after that the 2 factory installed USB ports in the back of the laptop stopped working. I tried to get them back working and couldn't so I bought a 2 Port USB Card Bus Adapter, which has worked great giving me back useable USB ports. Well, all of a sudden when I insert the Card Bus into the laptop, everything locks up. I can do nothing but remove it and hold down the power button to shut it down and reboot. I even bought a new Card Bus Adapter and it does the same thing. Now I have no useable USB ports.
Im hoping someone can help me to either get my originally installed USB ports working or to get my PC card slot working again.

I wanted to add to this...I did plug in a CF card the other day and that was recognized. I then tried my external hard drive directly again in a front USB port and it worked for a while (an hour or so). Then it suddenly was not there anymore as if I'd ejected it even though I didn't. Tried to put it back in and nothing. This tells me it may be a hardware problem since it "recognized" it for a bit. It's very frustrating.

SD card not mounting in card slot, mounts only with USB card reader

I have browsed this forum "Ports and interfaces on the MacBook Pro (2008 and Later)" for a bit and searched for "SD" but did not find any posts directly related to my issue here.
I have a Kingston 512Mb card which mounts in my MacBook Pro only when I insert it in a cardreader inserted in the USB port.
Directly in the memory card slot it does not mount. Other SD cards do mount. I did not yet recognise a pattern in what mounts and does not mount.
I need to mount this specific SD card in the memory slot because bigger, newer SD cards are not accepted by the device I am using the card in (an iRex iLiad).
The Kingston 512Mb SD card is formatted as MS-DOS (FAT16) according to Disk Utility.
Any suggestions on what I could try? Buying other 512Mb cards is not that easy, there is not a lot available and only the ones on this list http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/IliadSD_Memorycardslist are supported by the device.

Within a year or two, a device that is limited to 512MB and smaller cards — and only certain ones of those — will probably be completely useless. As you've found, no one else is interested in buying such tiny cards any more, and their production is likely to be discontinued very soon.
This does nothing to explain why your card can't be read in the built-in reader, though. One thing to check is the position of the "lock" slider on the card; a small handful of other posters with similar problems have reported that if the slider isn't securely locked or unlocked (I don't recall which), it gets disturbed as the card is inserted, and the card can't be read as a result.
If that doesn't solve the problem for you, just use your USB reader when you have to read that particular card. As you say, your other (presumably larger) cards are all read properly in the built-in reader, so you know the reader works. There may just be a minute manufacturing-tolerance problem with that particular card.

I'm getting fed up with the lack of usb ports on my MacbookPro. Does anyone have any experience with usb hubs in the express34 slot?
