SD card won't mount & can I recover my images?

I wasn't exactly sure where to post this but ultimately I'm having trouble mounting an external device and secondly recovering my images.
I have a canon SD800is with a transcend 4GB sd-hc (class 6)card, went on a trip and took many pix and the camera is giving me a "memory card error" and when I use the usb card reader the sd does not mount.
Is there any utility or something in terminal to force it to mount?
Been looking at a lot of photo recovery options but not sure if they will function if the card is not mounted.

OK, so I was able to get the uncorrupted pix and 2 avi files off when my camera was stumped and the Mac would not mount the sd card with an external reader.
As a last resort I remembered that my epson rx580 all in one printer has 2 card slots, and I hooked up it's usb then inserted the card and was hoping to see them on the tiny screen to catch a glimpse. I inserted the card and saw that it said that there were 285 files on it but when I went to memory card mode on the printer and tried to "view" them it said no images, so I yanked the card. I noticed an error message on my powerbook about removing a disk incorrectly, I reinserted it and noticed that it mounted and there were all of the images and the previews, but despite the previews some were corrupted and would not copy or opened incorrectly.
Question now is the problem with my camera or just the card??
The card is being replaced from the place I bought it.
I hope that this helps someone in a similar situation, which is the reason I'm responding to my post!!

I'm not sure I can help you with this situation. Odds are you probably can't recover the images if they aren't hidden in the card, but this just seems to be a fluke. I've had flash drives that be plugged in only to find out that was their iminant death.

If they were renamed on the flash card that is a poor practice. If renamed in Bridge the old names can be recovered it you have checked "preserve original name in XMP". If not you are out of luck. But you still have the images correct?

Tom, thanks for your quick reply. I'm a commerical photographer using Canon 5D mk2's mostly and have in the past just downloaded images to a mac book for backup. I really liked the compact size of the Ipad and just got the retina model with the camera connection kit and seem to be hearing that CF readers can't be used with it b/c they draw too much power. Seems like I remember reading I could use a cord that might have come with my cameras to download directly to the Ipad. I haven't tried it yet as I can't find the connection but then you just said it can't be done?
   I'm COMPLETLY lost as to your "first pluging in a flash drive to my computer, advice. Do you mean Ipad when you say computer? "then put your movie/photo files into the folder." HOW????????
     Then plug it into the Ipad??????     TOTALLY lost.
Also your saying just "do a google search for a reader doesn't work b/c NONE are able to work with the newer Ipads b/c they use TOO much power or so everyone says everyone that have tried.
   Hope you can help a little more b/c I'm really getting frustrated with all the conflicting advice!

SD Card Won't Mount But Works In Camera

I have an SD card that just won't mount, I have tried it in two macs running 10.6 and two PC's running XP and with two different card readers. I am trying to recover some images on the card, it has been formatted in the camera & then had two photos taken which were written to it. The odd thing is that if I put the card into a different camera it works, you can see the two photos taken after formatting. Any ideas about how to mount the card so as to run some recovery software?

I have been looking for a fix to the same problem for weeks. I have tracked it to an OS conflict on the MAC.
I have access to several iMACs and MACbook Pros. All the Laptops can read the SD cards. In fact all the iMACs at my school can read the card through my card reader. When I bring the card reader and the SD cards home to my iMAC running 10.6.4 it wont read the card. I also tried the card reader on MACbook Pro running 10.6.5. It does not work.
It can not be the card reader because it works on other MAC running older versions of OS X.
It must be a conflict between the newest versions of OS X and my older card reader.
Does anyone know of a good card reader that is working with 10.6.5 and SD Cards?
Additional information:
I use the SD cards in Canon video cameras and a Kodak Zi8. All are HD video files.

External Hard Drive Won't Mount- Need to recover files

Problem: External Seagate FreeAgent Desktop USB external hard drive
won't mount on desktop=ie: no access to my important files.. Please Help!
Details:
External seagate freeagent 500 GB Desktop USB HD ( only 2 months old)
(using for document / file backup-not as a startup disc)
on my Mac G3 350 MZ Blue & White Tower /768 ram/ running OSX 10.1.5 & OS9.2~

Problem: Started using the external 500 GB HD 2 months ago -with no problems-until this morning. Tried to double click to open it to access files
and got the "beach ball of death" and needed to restart.
My trusty G3 started up fine, however, the external HD was now
not showing up on the desktop as normal. I troubleshooted -by restarting,
trying different a/c plugs/ different USB ports , ran disk utility..called
seagate -not much help . Seagate said to try the HD on another mac-which I did-
a G5 tower- same problem.

The External hard drive will show up in disk utility, but is grayed out.
and when click "mount" same two messages keep showing:
message 1: "a disk attempting to mount as unknown has failed verification or has failed to
mount.please use disk utility to check the disk"

restart:" you have inserted a disk containg no volumes that mac osx
can read to use unreadable volumes,click initialize to continue with the disk inserted ,click continue"

I ran Disk Utility /first aid "verify & repair , the following info came up:
Repairing disk "main backup 2007 ".
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Invalid key length ( <<<IN RED )
Repair completed. "

Though it said the repair was completed, the "invalid key length" issue
still comes up when re-running disk utility...Hard drive would still not
mount on desktop-even after restarting .

Will zapping the PRAM be of any use in getting the external to mount on the desktop?
Your external Hard drive is already recognized. But it cannot be mounted on the desktop due to its directory damage. You can certainly Zap the PRAM, and it will not hurt anything, but I am skeptical that it will change the situation.
Do you think the Disk Warrior 4.0 cd will even work on my G3 350MHZ running Mac OS 10.1.5?
If you boot from the CD and run it from the CD, absolutely yes. If you attempt to INSTALL it from a download or a CD, probably not.
Have you ever used Disc Warrior and is using it complicated?
I own and use Disk Warrior. You select the drive to be rebuilt, it builds a proposed new directory from the information and file fragments available.
When complete, it will provide a list of problems encountered, tell you what files have been placed in the "Rescued Items" folder, and allow you too look at your drive using the proposed new directory. Your only decision is whether the new directory seems to be an improvement over the old \[in your case, hopelessly corrupted] directory. You then tell it whether to replace the old directory with the proposed new directory, or to abandon its work and leave your Hard Drive unchanged.

From what you have described, your files are very likely to still be there. Sometimes in a situation like this, a handful of files cannot be recovered.
My other thought was to take the external HD there and have them try to recover the files.
Make sure you completely understand the costs involved. File recovery using a service like DriveSavers can run into many hundreds of dollars. They are prepared to disassemble your drive in a clean room and replace controller boards and read/write heads to achieve success. Your drive has serious, but not fatal, Directory damage. The Hardware, and most of your files, are likely just fine.

SD card won't mount in core i7 iMac (late 2009)

I have a late 2009 core i7 iMac running 10.6.7. The only way to mount the various SD and SDHC cards I have is to boot with the card in the SD slot. If I don't do this the card is not mounted and is not visible in Disk Utility or System Profile.

Please make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.

SanDisk 4GB Card Won't Mount

If I connect the camera directly to my MAC and open iPhoto, it works just fine. The SD card however won't work on my SanDisk reader nor on my Lexar card reader. My CF card works on the Lexar reader though. How can I make this work?

Sometimes it's annoying having to use a PC to update the firmware. I had to use my Dell to update my Verizon router firmware. I wish the world would understand that PeeCees are not the only computers out there

Macbook Air won't boot - can I recover files this way?

I have a 1st-gen Macbook Air that won't boot. Will the following work to access any files on the hard disk?
1) attach powered USB hub to Air
3) attach external USB DVD drive to hub
3) hold down <option> and boot Air from 10.6 retail install DVD
4) attach external USB hard disk to hub
5) copy file from internal Air hard disk to external USB hard disk
Will that work?
Can I boot from a USB DVD drive that's connected through a hub?
Do I have to use an Apple Superdrive or will a 3rd party DVD drive work?

Does it see the drive at least in Disk Utility and just not a mount point? If Disk Utility won't even recognize the drive over the PATA connection it's unlikely you'd be able to use terminal to extract data. If it sees the drive and the mount point is grayed out this would indicate directory damage (usually). If it sees the drive and there's no mount point this is often an indication of partition corruption or worse, hardware failure.
Hard drives are "funky" when they fail, sometimes. I've seen them lock up the I/O bus and prevent any action on behalf of the startup sequence. Only when the drive is removed and hooked up to an external drive dock/sled will it mount. The problem, here, is that the 1st generation HD has this really funky PATA/ZIF connection and most standard drive docks/sleds won't work.

IMac internal hard drive won't mount/can't be repaired

hi there,
my 11yo son has been using my older imac. it's a 24" 2.4ghz imac with a 500gb drive from around 2007, i think. anyway, yesterday he said it was acting funny, he restarted it and it hung on the grey screen with the logo.
i looked at it more closely today and tried restarting in safe mode, tried the PRAM thing, and got no where. i then booted from the 10.6 dvd that i have. i ran disk utility and tried verifying and repairing it. it said there was a missing thread record (id = 92600) and an invalid sibling link. it tried to rebuild catalog b-tree.
then it said that disk utility can't repair the disk. i tried to re-install the system software, but disk utility couldn't mount it.
the system profiler can see the disk, but as i mentioned, i can't get it to mount and am sort of at a loss here. thought? ideas?

Your HD seems to have crashed. I would recommend running Apple Hardware test 3x in Extended Mode, if you get error codes as I supsect this will confirm the problem. If you aren't familiar with AHT you will need the original install discs that shipped with the computer and you can find instructions at:

If it errors your next step is taking it in for repair at your local Apple Store or AASP.

Sandisk SDHC card won't mount

Hey guys,
I am using a Sandisk SDHC 4GB card. It's referred to as Sandisk-Ultra.
For the first time ever, I tried to use it on my iMac. I directly inserted it in the card slot on the left hand side of the machine [iMac view] but it wouldn't mount.
I am running OS X 10.7.2.
I have never used an SDHC card before so I may not know some of the specifics.
Any help?

G-Drive Mini won't mount - can't see it in Disk Utility

Last night my g-drive mini was unplugged from the firewire port, didn't get ejected before unplugging. When I went to put it back in, the power light comes on, but I don't hear the HD spin, and it doesn't mount.
When I open disk utility, I still don't see the drive.... oh for the love of god please help... pretty much lifes work/backup on there.

When i do, its only showing my big gdrive, a connected server, and my hd. But not the mini.
One other detail i should add, if it changes anything, is last night i tried hooking up the g-drive mini to my airport express just to see if it would work wirelessly (after soon finding out express doesnt support that). Having to use a USB cord, I needed to plug it into the wall with the ac-adapter.
Thats when I went to plug it back into my laptop and wouldn't mount from that moment forward.

If you have access to a PC I believe - if memory serves me correctly - that the free download SubRip can rip the highlight overlays back to graphics files from the Menu VOBs
There is a subtitle ripping program for Mac - D-Subtitler - which may do the same job but I have never found it to be as good at ripping stuff as SubRip.
I guess the only other way is if they are not too complex is to recreate the overlays in Photoshop using frame grabs for reference?

No F11- how can I recover factory image?

Hello, I am new to this forum. I am trying to fix a friend's laptop. His disk drive crashed and I had to install a new HDD.
Laptop is Flex 2-15D with UEFI and GPT disk format, Windows 8.1.
I managed to copy over the following partitions to the new HDD: WINRE_DRV SYSTEM_DRV(active) LRS_ESP LENOVO (drivers?) and PBR_DRV (recovery partition). I am missing the local_C drive and an undefined partition that was 128mb.
I believe I have the necessary partitions to do a factory recovery. I have no OS, of course, because I am missing the local_C drive that contained windows 8.1
When I power on, I get messages to allow entering the BIOS(UEFI) or to enter the boot menu to boot from CD, USB, HDD, etc. However, there is no F11 option to do a factory reset.
Can anyone help me recover the F11 function? I would think that if I could fix the boot manager, I could do a factory restore.
UPDATE
Whoa, I just found the NOVO button. It listed system restore as an option. When I selected it, it started loading windows and I thought it was going to be all good. Then I got a message saying onekey recovery partition was damaged..
Any suggesteions?

Got your pm. I can't guarantee that this will work but you can give it a try. Just in case, try to make a backup of the recovered partitions just in case what follows will not be successful.
Rather than troubleshooting what you have accomplished so far I proposed that you make the pendrive project that I have given in this link (A DIY PROJECT: Creating a bootable OKR 8 Recovery USB Flash Drive (Rev 1.1)).
Instead of 16 GB use 32 GB flash drive. Here is the part that you need to modify: Refer to step V while copying the files as instructed in the indicated folders try to just supply what are missing, do not overwrite what's already in them. The reason is that the Evozi program already made the NOVO initiated OKR program operational. After making the pendrive, boot from it with the replacement drive connected.
That's it.
