SD file "becoming" anamorphic widescreen...?

I work at a university and we currently shoot performances in SD and capture to an older G4 with FCP 4.5 (multi-cam through a Grass Valley switcher, converted to firewire for capture through a JVC miniDV deck, if any of that matters). Anyway, I'm using the standard preset captures (NTSC Firewire DV, or whatever the basic one is) and everything appears fine on the capture system. However, we transfer it to a computer in our lab running FCP7 (new iMac) to edit and burn to DVD, or whatever delivery method we need.
Anyway, the problem is, when we open it in FCP7, the frame is stretched to widescreen. Checking the format of the clip, the anamorphic field is checked. Unchecking this corrects the issue. Looking at the preview in the finder back on the G4 it was captured on, it is still stretched to widescreen, but opening it up in FCP4.5 it is 4:3 (and the anamorphic field is unchecked). I've double-checked the capture preset we're using and any reference to anamorphic is blank. How does it become anamorphic the moment you look at it outside of the version of FCP it was captured in (while even still on the capture system's Finder), yet returns to normal when you bring it back into that version? And more importantly, what am I overlooking to change so I don't have to constantly change it once we get it down to the edit suite?

Fairly certain I'm not...
When I check the clip's info (right-click on it in the bin) on the G4 machine (with FCP4.5), anamorphic is unchecked. I opened up the Easy Setup and the current setup was Custom (but no anamorphic--was custom because it was set up from the DV-NTSC setting, but device control changed to non-controllable device since it's a live source). Opening up the Capture window and going to the Capture Settings tab showed Capture/Input as DV NTSC 48kHz (not anamorphic).
I went ahead and just reset the Easy Setup and changed it to non-controllable device again, in case something was screwed up and it just didn't show. Guess I'll try to record something and see how it turns out now. Worst case, we'll just always uncheck anamorphic once we get the clip into the FCP7 editor.

  • Changing sequence from 16:9 widescreen to anamorphic widescreen

I am working on a short video clip shot using 5D Mark II - 1080p. I am editing on FCP 7 and want to change my sequence from 16:9 to anamorphic widescreen without any distortion...anyway this can be done? All my raw files and transcoded file are 16:9.
    Thanks
    Sid

sure.  fcp will automatically adjust this when you edit a clip into the sequence, so after changes the sequence settings, simply edit a source clip at the end of the sequence.   Does it display correctly?  If so, select the clip, copy, and then select all the other clips in the sequence, hit option-v (paste attributes) and make sure just basic motion and distort are checked.  Should fix everything.  Then delete that clip you added at the end of the sequence.
Oh yeah, probably a good idea to duplicate your sequence before doing this, in case you make a mistake (or if I've made a mistake - nah, that wouldn't happen).
    good luck.

  • Creating anamorphic widescreen dvds

Does iDVD (in combination with iMovie) now produce anamorphic widescreen DVDs from a 16:9 camcorder source?
I'm currently using iLife '05, and the DVDs it produces are not anamorphic widescreen, which means when I play them back on DVD Player, they have a 2" border on all sides of the screen.

    Andrew,
You are talking about two different issues with iLife 05 - Importing anamorphic video into iMovie HD (in iLife 05) and then burning anamorphic 16:9 DVDs with iDVD.
Many 16:9 cameras work great with iMovieHD. I even created anamorphic 16:9 DV files with both iPhoto and PhotoToMovie that also worked great with iMovieHD (05). However, some cameras do have the pillarboxing issues you pointed out and Matti referenced. I do not know whether or not this was fixed for your camcorder for iLife06.
The second issue iLife05 has is how it creates 16:9 anamorphic video in iDVD5. Actaully this does work correctly! It's only the conversion of the anamorphic 16:9 to letterboxed 4:3 for 4:3 TV's that is an issue. If you take a "good" 16:9 anamorphic movie in iMovie and transfer it to iDVD5, it does encode as anamorphic - it just doesn't set the flag right for display on 4:3 TVs.....they are full screen 16:9 anamorphic DV for 16:9 displays, and play correctly on my 16:9 plasma TV at the normal WS setting with no distortion, just like commercial WS DVDs. If this were not an anamorphic signal, I would have to use the "zoom" setting, which is how I view letterboxed cable shows. If you read David Althoff's site carefully, you will note that iDVD5 can use 16:9 encoding, but the playback flag is not forced to letterbox it for 4:3 displays.
Now I'm not saying that you haven't had the issue of getting 4:3 encoding....and your 2 inch border does suggest that! I think your main problem is the import of the movie into iMovie in the first place is creating 4:3 video, and once you've got that, iDVD isn't going to fix it.
You need to make sure that your start a 16:9 WS DV project, and then import your video with the preferences "unchecked" as Matti suggests.
And what kind of camera do you have???

  • IDVD won't trigger anamorphic widescreen flag

After I edit in FCEHD and export to quicktime and then put that quicktime in IDVD it doesn't put it back in anamorphic widescreen... is there anyway to fix this?

OK... I went into my Pro apps and took notes. This is what works for me (in iDVD 5.0.1). I tested on a short 20 second video clip.
While in Final Cut Pro (5): Export/Using Compressor...
In Compressor Preview window, select file in pop-up on upper-left side of window.
    Click on the Batch window.
Click on Setting button and choose Advanced Format Conversions, then DV NTSC Anamorphic.
In Inspector: Click on Encoder button. Click on Video: Settings button and choose DV/DVCPRO-NTSC from pop-up. In Compressor section, Select Quality-Best, Scan Mode-Interlaced, Aspect Ratio-16:9, click OK. If you want to save this as a Custom setting (you should) click Save As... and give it a name like "Widescreen." It will show up at the bottom of the Setting pop-up in the Batch window next time you need it.
Back to the Batch window. From Setting, select your Custom setting. Then select Destination. Then click Submit.
Batch Monitor opens and shows progress. Double-click the file created in your destination location. Mine will show 720x405.
Simple, eh? I did that without consulting a manual.
I hope it works for others!!!

I am using a Mac and when I save my files as a jpeg, the files become much smaller, and consequently darker and blurrier.  What can I do to fix this?  I have tried to figure out how to chat with someone at Adobe, but they certainly don't make it easy to do.  At the moment, this program is useless to me.  Very depressing....

    Hello,
I would like to inform you that not all the browsers and online PDF readers support copying text from a PDF. If you have opened the PDF online, please download PDF file to your computer and then open the file in Adobe Reader.
Please share a screenshot if the issue still persists.

  • Excel Files become "Broken" and cannot be opened

    Our environment is as follows:
SharePoint 2013 server, web application running in 2010 mode.  Our users are primarily on thin clients in a 64-bit Citrix environment running Office 2013 applications.  We use a redirected desktop/my documents on a network drive so that users will
have their documents and settings on any computer they log into.
The issue we've run into is that sometimes one of the Excel files becomes "broken" and will no longer open.  This seems to be related to when a user has the file open for long periods of time and loses connectivity or if the user's Excel /
session crashes.  When the file becomes broken, the symptoms are:
Open document from SharePoint and Excel splash screen reads:
    1.  Starting...
    2.  Contacting the Server For Information.  (This message lasts ~2 min)
Then an error message in Excel states:
"Microsoft Excel is waiting for another application to complete an OLE action."
    OK
    "Could not open 'https://sharepointurl/site/subsite/documentlibrary/document name.xlsx'."
    OK
Microsoft Excel cannot access the file
'SameFilePathAsAbove'.  There are several possible reasons:
The file name or path does not exist.
The file is being used by another program.
The workbook you are trying to save has the same name as a currently open workbook.
    OK
    Empty workbook
We've had problems determining "who" broke it, but the result is the same - nobody is able to open it, whether using Excel2013, Excel2010, or the Excel Services thru the SharePoint "view in browser" option.
Our terminal servers reboot nightly, we've tried rebooting the 2 SharePoint application servers and the SharePoint SQL server to no avail.  It seems like the file is stuck waiting for itself.  In some cases, we've found that older versions of the
file can be restored (generally a few versions back) but when versioning is not enabled then that possibility is out.
We cannot seem to resolve where the issue lies at it's core or how to resolve it.  This happens much more frequently for the documents that users keep open for long periods of time making modifications to them, but we suspect that's because they are
just more likely to have a SharePoint document open if their computer or Excel client crashes.

They don't want us (the dealers) to edit the spreadsheet, but they do want us to read it. It's their pricelist, they wouldn't sell a lot of equipment if we couldn't see how much it costs! The point is that Numbers won't even open a spreadsheet that is edit protected, not read protected. This is a major issue, it should at the very least tell me I can open or import the sheet as a read only.
Excel will always open the spreadsheet, it just can't make changes to it.
For right now, when I need to get information from the pricelist in Excel, I have to copy and paste the info from the edit protected page to another blank sheet. This is a royal PITA because the Excel pricelist has 50 plus pages. I have been officially told to do that by my manufacturer. But they won't give anyone the password to unprotect the edit function of the sheet. Go figure.

    Ok, lets be brief.
This problem is annoying me for years. It is totally reproducible although random. It happens when copying to external drives (mainly USB) when they are configured for "safe removal". I have had issues copying to NTFS and FAT32 partitions. I have
had issues using 4 different computers, from 7 years old to brand new ones, using AMD or intel chipsets and totally different USB controllers, and using many different USB sticks, hard disks, etc. The only common thing in those computers is Windows 7 x64 and
the external drives optimization for "safe removal". Installing Teracopy reduces the chances of data corrpution, but does not eliminate them completely. The only real workaround (tested for 2 years) is activating the write cache in the device manager
properties of the drive. In that way, windows uses the same transfer mechanisms as for the internal drives, and everything is OK.
MICROSOFT guys, there is a BIG BUG in windows 7 x64 external drives data transfer mechanism. There is a bug in the cache handling mechanism of the safe removal function. Nobody hears, I've been years talking about this in forums. It is a very dangerous bug
because it is silent, and many non professional people is experiencing random errors in their backup data. PLEASE, INVESTIGATE THIS. YOU NEED TO FIX SUCH IMPORTANT BUG. IT IS UNBELIEVABLE THAT IT IS STILL THERE SINCE 2009!!!
    Hope this helps.

  • Using Lightroom 5.7, Raw files become from my Nikon D810 become corrupted when I select them to view or edit.

.Updated to Lightroom 5.7 to accommodate the Nikon D810. Upon importing RAW files to the files become corrupted when they are selected to be viewed or edited.
I am using Windows 7, 64 bit, with 8 GB Ram.
    Any help would be appreciated.

There are several likely sources of corruption, and video card would be far down on my list of possible suspects.
The transfer from camera card to hard disk is the most likely place for problem, either the card reader or USB cable can go bad. Another likely source of problems is the computer's hard disk is starting to fail. The camera card itself may be bad. And lastly, the memory in the computer may be malfunctioning.

  • Why does a 170 Kb file becomes a 3.5 Mb when I save it as theme?

I realized that when I save a file (170 Kb) as theme, its size increases dramatically (3.5Mb) (tried in keynote 09 ad 08 under OSX 10.6.7 or 10.5.8)
I realized that by doing "Save as" > Advanced Options > select "Save theme image into document", the saved file becomes a 3.5 Mb file as well.
Therefore, I suspect that the "save theme" does by default select this "Save theme image into document" option, hence the 3.5 Mb file size.
I tried this on several Macs and got the same result. However, all Macs are Macs I used at some points or where people installed my files / themes.
As a result, all files created from the theme I created are big fat babies of 3.5 Mb, which defeat the purpose of a theme to make it clean and lean.
Please advise if you have the same issue.
Saved custom themes can be found at [Home]/Library/Application Support/iWork/Keynote/Themes.
Suggestions welcome on what caused this oversized theme file size and how to reduce it?
    Thanks in advance

OK, problem solved. I was having this same issue & every presentation that I made from the new template was over 3.5MB, even if it contained only text. I now have it down to 229kB.
I used a plain black theme as my basis for a custom theme. I modified the fonts, layouts, etc, just as I wanted them. Then I saved as a template. The file size balloned to 3.5MB. The reason turns out that the default charts fot the black theme have woodgrain surface textures & these are being saved into the custom theme file (in a folder called "theme-files" within the custom theme package). So the solution is to remove all references to textured charts in the custom theme.
So... Get your custom theme ready & save it as a regular presentation somewhere for safe keeping. Now create a new chart on a new slide. (NB. A new regular slide, not a Master Slide.) For simplicity, choose the top-left-most chart type (column chart). Open the Inspector; go to the chart tab; select Chart Colors. In the new Chart Colors window, select 2D Color Fills & pick any colour. Click Apply All. Go to the menubar item Format --> Advanced --> Define Column Chart for All Masters. Click OK with the default option of "6".
Now, use the Inspector to change the chart to the next chart type along. Repeat the process above of changing the chart colours to a 2D colour fill, then applying this to all masters. Repeat, repeat, repeat for all chart types. I couldn't select a colour fill for some chart types, such as the line graphs.
Once you've defined all charts as using a 2D colour fill, there are no references to textures any longer. So, now delete the chart & its slide. Go to File --> Save Theme. Give it a name.
Now, check your custom theme file size in the Finder. Hopefully, it's come down in size now!

there are various reasons for abnormal growth of your log file.
try to figure out is there any open transaction in your database use - DBCC OPENTRAN
    also run this query
    select log_reuse_wait_desc from sys.databases where name = 'DATABASE_NAME'
and analyze the result, this result will let you know possible reason for the log growth.

  • Can the prefs.js file become infected with malware?

I am trying to solve an issue with my computer and I have done scans with AdwCleaner. The scan results list my Firefox "prefs.js" files, both for my own user account and for the Guest account. IS there any chance of that file becoming infected with anything?
Probably not I suppose, a false positive perhaps?
That said, here is my issue in case anybody recognizes the symptoms and can help.
After a fresh boot my Internet is abnormally slow, down by 90%.
So far I have determined it is probably not hardware related not due to any background network activity.
This does not happen if I boot into Safe Mode, or even if I boot into the "Guest" user account.
I found a workaround: In device manager I "Disable" and then "Enable" the NIC (network adapter).
After my "fix", Internet connection speed immediately jumps back up to my full normal speed.
The speed slowdown never returns during that current session. It only returns after the next boot.
Back around the first of the year I did have a run-in with "Conduit" and eliminated it. A month ago I had a run-in with "Iminent" and eliminated that as well. There are, however, a number of orphaned Registry keys relating to the "Iminent" encounter but no software or toolbars associated with those keys.
Again, this problem only occurs after a fresh, full boot, only when booting to my own User Account, and is easily worked-around by re-enabling my NIC in device manager.
    Ring any bells?

Some extensions do store data in prefs.js.
Does your scanner indicate why it finds the file objectionable? Perhaps you can remove the problem material another way. For example, if you open the about:config preferences editor and look for any appearance of the word conduit and clear those out, maybe prefs.js will pass the next scan?
    (1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
    (2) Use the search box above the list to filter down to preferences containing relevant terms. For example, you could type or paste '''conduit''' and pause while the list is filtered.
If there is a string-type preference you want to clear, you don't have to open it for editing and delete it. Instead, you can right-click > Reset it.

Filters fix the resolution, rasterizing the vector graphics. Try make it very large, the apply the filter to the containing layer and shrink the layer to be the desired size...

  • Encoding Error -- file becomes offline

I just bought Studio Pro 4 and created a simple project -- burning one (16 gig) movie (project file is 3.3 GB). In the graphical window everything looks fine but when I try to burn it, 8 hours later the log reads: Encoding error (which links back to the source material). And now in the graphical window the movie is offline. This is an internal hard drive. Any ideas out there? Thanks.

thanks for your reply. I can try that but I would rather just burn the DVDs as I've always done.
Why are my files becoming off-line and causing the encoding to error -- that's really what I'd like to know.
