    Hello Snowflake,
You are talking about the HP SimpleSave external drive.
Its possible the simplesave software is corrupt but HP does not support it anymore and has taken down the link to the download.
I will PrivateMessage you with a link for another source.

  • HP SimpleSave SD500a cannot access files

I cannot access any of the files/folders that I had backed up HP SimpleSave SD500a USB disk. I backed up by files before using XP, Vista and Windows 8.1 and have important information on it.
I had to restore my Dell 1545 laptop OS to factory defaults due to problems with Windows Vista Home Premium Edition and took a backup of all my files onto the SD500a where I store all my other backup data and verified that the backed up copy was fine.
After restoring Vista and installing updates, which included Vista SP2 I went to restore my backed up files. I connected my USB drive to the laptop and I noticed that Vista automatically installed the driver and 2 new drives appeared: CD Drive G: HP Launcher and Local Disk H:.
I then ran a virus scan using ESET Smart Security software that I had newly installed on the Vista laptop and found that the scan finished in no time. I changed the parameters to “in-depth” and this too finished quickly. Now I started to suspect that something had gone awry.
I could not access both of them in Explorer. I checked the drive properties and I got a message: H:\ is not accessible Data error (cyclical redundancy check). Drive G: is HP Launcher. I noticed that a “blue” light on the USB drive keeps flickering on most of the time when I open Explorer. At one point I did get a message if I wanted to format the disk which I declined.
I checked the status of both drives (G and H) in Disk Manager. Disk G: file system CDFS, capacity 1Mb, free 0Mb, status healthy and H: file system RAW, capacity 465.11Gb, free 465.11Gb, status healthy.
I tried connecting the SD500a to a desktop with Windows 8.1 and got the same result. I am not sure if the file formats changed after I connected it to my Vista laptop following the restore of the OS (NTFS vs CDSF/RAW) but I don't know what they were originally.
I am hoping that someone will be able to help to resolve this issue so that I can access my files.

If in fact you have to create a new volume and start all over, there are several data recovery programs that are free that should work just fine. Like I said, it wont get every file back, but it should get most of them.

    Personal commentary:
I do not trust ANY automatic backup service that runs in the background. I also don't want my backups compiled into a proprietary format that I have to use that specific program to access that backup with. Also for reasons you just experienced.
Although there a many different opinions about backing up files, One method that is minorley cumbersome but tried and true is Mark Russinovich's Sync Toy 2.1.  It is not automatic, I have to initiate it manually each time. But it will find and add/replace updated files when told to do so in Synchronise, Echo or Contribute modes. I can set up several categories to backup separately.  I just feel more confident its done when I manually do it myself and the files are accessible as if I drag and dropped directly.
    Just my humble opinion.
    Hope it helps. Good luck.

  • Simple Save hp sd500a.

Did a backup, got the reponse "did not complete" tried again, same results, got information "configuration registry database is corrupt" "Error code: 0x800703F1" . How can I correct this?

    Hello deegregg,
Open command prompt and run the following command SFC /scannow.
Search CMD, right click and run as administrator. Then run the scan. This will scan the system for any corrupt files.
Also you might want to try to temporary disable any anti-virus that you have.
Let me know if this helps.

  • HP SimpleSave External Hard Drive - Can't Access Files, Says to Re-Format

I have had a SimpleSave External Hard Drive for over a year now, and have never had any problems with it.
Recently, I am unable to access my files on the hard drive when it is attached to my computer.  It tries to load, and then gives me the error message "You need to format the disk in drive H: before you can use it. Do you want to format it?".  I don't want to format it because I don't want to lose all of the files that I have stored.  When I press "Cancel" i also get the error message "H:\ is not accessible. Data error (cyclic redundancy check).
I have not changed anything recently so I do not understand why it has all of a sudden stopped working.
I am using an HP notebook (G62 Notebook PC) and Windows 7 Home Premium operating system.
I am connected to the hard drive via USB.  I have tried turning off my computer and turning it back on, and unplugging the drive.  I have tried using other USB outlets.
My SimpleSave information: model no hp md1000h
    P/N HPBAAD0010HBK-00
The blue light is still blinking on the front of the hard drive.
I would like to access my files and get the external hard drive working properly again.  Please help!
    Thanks in advance!

I too have the exact same problem on my HP SimpleSave (sd500a) external hard drive. I got through to WDC, and they apparently support these devices now. They asked me to send them a copy of my purchase receipt in order to extend my warranty in their system in order to help me (ridiculous!!). I sent the scanned copy of the receipt to [email protected], and got an auto-reply that they will get back to me within 1 day. I also went on their website, and they refer to the device in their system as 'ED Caviar Blue EIDE Hard Drive'. It has the same serial number as my product from HP, so I guess they have acquired these products or at least support of them (?). In any case, I'm freaking out because I have tons of family pictures, video and my entire iTunes library on the device. If any one is able to get help for this, please respond. I am desperate to get this resolved.

  • Hp Simplesave 500GB Hard Drive

Hi, I have an HP Simplesave sd500a external portable hard drive.
The drive failed, so I replaced it with another drive.
Now it won't let me reformat the drive.
Do I need to install new software on my computer to force a format?

  • (New thread) HP SimpleSave md1000h External Hard Drive - Can't Access Files,

New thread on same old unaswered issues from others.
My desktop crashed.  It  needs new harddrive.
I religiously backup my info everyweek on my simplesave md1000h
However, before I buy a new computer or replace the harddrive on my old computer, I want to at least get my Quicken Checking account info up and running on my wife's  laptop.
When I plug in the usb for the md1000h into the laptop,
it recognizes the  hardware is there but, does not show any files.
I presume my laptop needs the software to run the simple save.
However, there is nothing out there on the HP site.
Can anyone confirm that this is the issue...that I need the software...if so, where can I download it from.
I beleive the softweare came preloaded on the md1000....now I cant access that software....go figure.
Any help is appreciated.   Thanks.  Greg

  • HP SimpleSave external disk 1 Tb, "no access to a disk"

    HP SimpleSave 1 Tb, HPBAAD0010HBK-01, Model N: hp md1000h, S/N:[Personal Information Removed]
Virtual HPLauncher disk works and program HPLauncher.exe is started also. The system (Win7) sees the HP SimpleSave 1Tb disk. In properties of the disk shows the dimension of 0 byte and then jumps out a window "error in data (CRC). There is no access to a disk." After that it suggests to format a disk. I refuse. How to recover the disk?
    Thanks.

  • USB receptor port has broken off

Hi I have a HP SD500a portable hard drive. The USB receptor port has proken off. I can hear it rattling around inside the hard drive. Can this be repaired? If not is there a way of saving the data on the hard drive?

First thing I would do is check to make sure the sata cable is securely attached. If its loose at all, it may not be connecting. Second is that you do need to go to Computer Management and open Disk Management.Do you see a drive that displays as Unallocated? It should also say how much space is available and it should be "almost" 500GB. Not sure of the exact size but would be 400 something. If so, right click on that and choose New Simple Volume. A new window will open. Leave the size of the drive as is and click next.Assign a drive letter that's not already used in Disk Management.Click Next and choose the option to not format the drive. That way, if this works and all it needed was a drive letter, it wont wipe the data on the drive. Give the Volume label field a name for the drive (example: Old Simplesave).Click Next and select Finish. Note I: I don't think you will have to format the drive in the instructions above, but if it wont work without formatting, you would lose your data. If you reformat, you can try recovery software to recover most of the data. A small percentage would be lost due to the formatting process though. Recuva is a free recovery tool that works very well.Note II: If the unallocated space shows up as a very small amount and or you only see that drive identified as a CD drive, then either the drive has failed or it has a CD emulator chip built onto the board of the drive and is possibly preventing you from connecting it directly to SATA.
Let me know if this works or not.
