Sdi to dvi out vs. dvi preview monitor

i have an aja kona lhe pci express card with sdi out. i am getting another dell 24" 1920x1080 monitor for playback of hd. if i go with the kona as an output, i still need the sdi to dvi converter box ($700). is there a real picture quality difference between the sdi converter box solution and just setting the 2nd monitor as a playback (using only dvi) in fcp?

You'll still want the converter. Reason is, that the monitor is a progressive scan only display, so you need the converter to see the images without a lot of tearing in the picture. I really think you'd be better off buying the real deal here. Panasonic has a 17" wide screen HD flat panel that can be had for about 2800 bucks... no need then for the converter, and you gain a true external video monitor which can actually be setup to show you the true color of your material. The dell won't do this at all because you can't set it up properly without a blue only button which I'm quite sure it doesn't have.

Using video out as a preview monitor

I recently purchased the vga adapter to go from iMac G5 (non-Intel) to a separate VGA monitor to use as a preview minotr with FCP. However, I'm only able to use my VGA monitor to mirror the desktop of my iMac. How can I change this?

iMac G5 can only mirror the monitor on an external monitor, unless you use a 3rd party app to change the iMac firmware to enable "Screen Spanning".

X220 DP++ port to multiiple DVI-D monitors?

Hi all,
Would be grateful for your advice.
I want to use my DP++ port on the Lenovo x220 to 'drive' two 24" DVI-D LCD monitors showing separate images. It's not for gaming, only for boring office apps.
I can't work out from the displayport.org website or other helpful posts whether my x220 is capable of 2 separate digital video output streams through the DP++ port.
I would prefer not to use the various excellent docking stations that Lenovo makes due to limited desk space.
Would Startech.com 's DisplayPort to 3 DVI-D adapter work for example? ( http://intrl.startech.com/AV/Displayport-Converters/Triple-Head-DisplayPort-to-DVI-Multi-Monitor-Ada... )
My x220 is Intel i-5 sandy bridge and 8 GB ram.

As I understand, you want to have multiple display from the DisplayPort connector.
Going with a web link provided by you StarTech has a device which can give multiple display from DisplayPort, However, it is difficult to say if it will work as mentioned.
You may ask them to give demonstration before you buy it.

Can I use a VGA/DVI-D monitor to a new 2014 Mac Mini?

My wife's PC just died (it was a cheap 300 pc that lasted probably 5 years.
She basically emails, web surfs, looks at pictures and plays candy crush on Facebook so she doesn't need anything too high end.
I was thinking of getting her the basic 2014 mac mini but I have a VGA/DVI-D monitor (an older Dell) and it fits perfectly on her desk.
Can I somehow hook up a new mac mini to either the DVI-D or VGA input?
If not, what is the best monitor to get HDMI or should I look into a thunderbolt monitor?

Yes. You will have to purchase one of the following adopter:
- HDMI to DVI and use the Minis HDMI output
- Mini displayport to DVI adopter and use one of the Minis Thunderbolt ports
- Mini displayport to VGA adopter and use one of the Minis Thunderbolt ports

Audio is Out of Sync on NTSC Preview Monitor

Hello FCP Gurus,
I recently was hired by a local Broadcast TV Affiliate and I am looking at their FCP systems. I noticed that one of the suites has a big problem with the NTSC Preview Monitoring, the audio is way out of sync.
Here's the set up:
G5 Dual 2GHZ
3GB RAM
1 Internal Western Digital SATA 160GB (System Drive)
1 Internal Maxtor SATA 300GB (Media Drive and back up system drive)
2 Monitors
MAC OSX 10.4.3
FINAL CUT PRO 4.5
AJA IO LA
So when I play back anything in the timeline the audio on the external NTSC monitor is way off, not just a little bit but a ton. I am not sure why. I know that usually there is some delay but not this much. Is there a way to configure it without any delay? The computer monitor with the FCP canvas and viewer are dead on but the NTSC is way off, it is ahead of the video.
Also, when I am editing in the timeline I have to switch the AV setting from ProIO to Built In and then I can here it. When I insert back to BetacamSP through the AJA box I have to switch it back to ProIO to lay it to tape. While it is laying to tape I cannot hear the audio or even see the FCP meters. But when I play back what I just put down on the Beta deck, the aduio is fine. The decks are in the operations rooms almost on the other side of the building.
This maybe OK for 30 sec promos but for 30 minute shows this will drive me crazy. I am responsible for all elements, including audio.

make sure the audio is following the video.
if you are viewing video on an external monitor, make sure the audio is routed [i[the exact same path to the audio monitors. If you have the video going out through the AJA and the audio out directly from the computer, there will be a processing differential that you will hear as lag.
Also, make sure you have the most recent AJA drivers.

Preview monitor -- video out?

I'm hoping this is the right forum for this question.
I was wondering if there was a way to have a preview monitor to get a real world view of an edited piece I'm working on.
Currently, I'm set up with two flatscreens for working in FCP, but would like to have a 3rd small monitor, like a 13" one that I can out put the signal to see what it would look like.
Is this at all possible?

I have always used a dedicated source deck to feed dv footage into FCP. I have also always fed my NTSC monitor from the Mac via firewire through the deck and then out to the monitor through Video Out. Worked like a charm.
Well, I sold my deck and decided to buy a Sony DCR-HC32 to take it's place. I did a lot of research and read that this camera was compatible with FCP and Mac. Which from what I can tell it is.
The issue I am having is that when viewing the time line on the NTSC monitor, the image constantly jumps. Not something you could look at for 10 hours a day. It is really evident when the timeline is paused. I have the camera set up the same way I did the deck, firewire in from Mac, Video out to Monitor. It seems almost like a sync issue.
Any ideas?
Am I doing something wrong? The main reason I went with Sony is that I shoot with Sony pd-150s and didn't want to have playback compatibility problems with another manufacturer. I have already experience those with JVC equipment.

Can a dvi-d monitor be used with a C5U89AT

I have an existing Compaq Elite 8300 that currently is utilizing a HP2509m monitor. I want to use dual monitors and would like to use a C5U89AT dual port USB Graphics adapter and add a second HP2509m monitor. The spec sheet says the C5U89AT supports DVI-I and display port. The HP2509m provides DVI-D and VGA connections. Not sure if a DVI-D monitor would work or not. HP has available a display port to DVI-D adapter but not sure if this would be needed or work with the Graphics Adapter?

Yes, this adapter will supply a DVI-D signal on its DVI-I output. DVI-I supports both analog (VGA) and digital (HDMI and DVI) signals.

External Preview Monitor

I have searched multiple forums but haven't found the exact answer I am looking for.
Mac Pro Quad Core 2.93, 8GB. Doing one hour projects for local T.V. station. Looking for a method to get a 'external preview monitor' to see what it will actually look like when on T.V.
Looking at this as an option.

If you are working in DV (not SD), a simple analog/DV converter feeding a regular ol' TV will work. Most DV cameras have this capability.

Preview monitor playback 'sticks' with certain types of footage.

Hi there, I wonder if anyone could help me with this problem.
I am going through a Apple certified FCP training book with a DVD of footage for video editing. I a have copied the footage onto my hard drive as recomended. However, some clips will not play back with any motion through my preview T.V, it just sticks and parks wherever your playhead was before the footage began or once stopped. You can watch it back fine in the canvas on FCP obviosly, but the preview monitor is sticking and not playing along with it?
The training footage is set correctly because it configures your FCP to match the settings that the author was using.
My settings seem fine for standard DV editing as I loaded up some of my old Mini DV quicktime footage and it runs in FCP and through my T.V monitor in real time with the canvas/timeline. However I have DVCAM video footage to edit soon and when I also try to play it this also sticks on the preview T.V and doesn't follow the canvas until you stop playing and then it lands on the frame that i am parked on.
I imagine its my settings more than anything, I dont see how playing around with standard mini DV footage in the canvas is fine with the preview T.V and and not the DVCAM footage?
I am going out the mac via firewire into a Datavideo AD converter which in turn is going to the preview T.V via S-Video, with the audio phono into an amp. Like I say, works a treat with standard DV footage.

A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

Preview Monitor?

So on my pc I have Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 and I have the preview play in the canvas and on a preview monitor at the same time. I am trying to do the same thing on my mac pro. I want final cut to preview to my canvas and preview monitor at the same time just like I have in Premiere. I have an iLink cable from the mac pro to a HVRM15 and from there component cables to the hdtv. How do I set final cut to output a preview to this monitor?

If you are working with DV, this is simple. First connect your computer to a camera or deck via firewire, Then connect the camera/deck to your TV/monitor via RCA or S-Video.

Go to the View Menu, choose > External Video > All Frames

If you are working with HDV footage, FCP 6 allows you to view this via firewire, but ONLY as downconverted DV. It won't look the best, but you can see it. To do this,
If you need to view any format other than DV at full resolution, then you need to look into capture cards. Several standard definition and high definition models are available from www.aja.com and www.decklink.com. With these options you'll need a proper monitor to view full broadcast colors, but all models allow for realtime standard definition downconvert, allowing you to view HD on an SD monitor.
The Matrox MXO is another option that is output only, but allows you to view your footage on an Apple Cinema Display at full broadcast quality.

Preview Monitor Jitter

I have been editing all day just fine and then all of a sudden I have a jitter in my preview monitor. It is just a slight jitter up and down but nevertheless irratating. I have a Kona card that is going to my beta deck and then svideo out to my monitor. I haven't changed anything and the canvas preview is just fine. Does anyone have a answer or suggestion?

It is jittering as it plays as well as when it is stopped. This is a project that I have been working on for 2 weeks without a problem until now. The footage is all dv.

Final cut express preview monitor

I think I right clicked on the mouse accidentally when editing and now the curson gives me a magniying glass with a + in it. How do I get out of that? I am new to Final Cut. I have used Avid for years and I am trying to learn this new format. If I move the cursor to the preview monitor and click on it, it zooms the video. I know it is something simple, but I can find out how to fix it. Thanks!

Are you referring to the Viewer or the Canvas? In either case, click the button near the top center of that window which displays a % and select "Fit to Window."

PrE11: Project Assets box hides part of Preview Monitor

When you select the Adjust or Applied Effects buttons the displayed menus convienently slide the Preview Monitor to the left. When you select the Project Assets button and the menu drops it partially hides the Preview Monitor. It can be more or less depending on the adjustable size of the Project Assets menu. The Preview Monitor does not move out of the way like with the Adjust or Applied Effects menus.
Can the Preview Monitor be somehow moved or made to move? Can the Project Assets box be moved?

Here is what it looks like two ways:
Expanding the time line window will shrink the Preview Monitor enough that it does become 100% viewable.

Why my final dvd colors are not the same as seen in preview monitor?

I have a Mac Pro and Final Cut Pro X. The image in my preview monitor looks great but once I burn to DVD the colors are not exactly the way they look in my computer FCPX monitor (computer). Can anyone help me out here?

To my knowledge, the photo of a domain user is stored in the thumbnailPhoto
attribute on the user's object in Active Directory Domain Services. It might be that the
thumbnailphoto attribute doesn't get updated after you change the photo.
