  • One user freezes after login

One user on my computer (G5 1.6Ghz running 10.4.11) freezes after login. All the desktop items appear, as does the menu bar. But within a few seconds of this, the spinning beachball appears and everything becomes unresponsive (including force quit). If I login while holding shift everything works fine.
All the other accounts are working normally.
What should I do? I've removed everything from login items, but it still freezes.

Thanks for this. I did all this, but it still did not help. I then tried totally uninstalling little snitch, and the problem went away. After installing the newest version, everything seems to be working again.
Seems odd as I've been using little snitch (version 1.x) for years with no problems. Using 2.0.4 now and all is fine, so I'm happy.

  • Macbook pro freezes after login

I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro 15" with a Core i7 2.66GHz processor. Sometime after upgrading to Lion, I started getting the spinning beachball of death just after login. Unlike many posts about freezes on similar MacBook Pros, mine is not freezing before login, but after. I start the machine, login, and then if I try to open any application, the beachball appears and I have to do a hard shutdown with the power button. Then if I restart again, it is usually fine. I was able to fix this problem some time ago by deleting a preference file (plist) for one of my apps (I think), but the problem has surfaced again and I cannot remember how to correct this. Anyone having similar problems, please let me know if you've had any luck fixing it. I am running 10.7.3 (in fact, it seems like the problem may have resurfaced just after the update to 10.7.3, but I'm not sure.)
FYI, I have auto graphics switching off and am still experiencing this problem.

Don't worry about the auto graphics switching. Go to "Users & Groups" in system preferences. Then click on login items and removes all of them. I haven't pinned down exactly which one was causing the problem but I suspect it was one associated with my HP printer.  I have verified that Dropbox and Magic Menu from StuffIt are OK to leave in the login items.  Just remove what you have there and add them back in one at time (if you can't live without them) until it starts to give you trouble again. Let me know if this helps.

  • MBP Freezes after login

Used Firefox, when suddenly the computer was unresponsive.. so had to hard boot.
Now when i startup it freezes after approx. 20 sec. after the login is shown.
If i don't login the computer freezes at the login, and if i login finder freezes.
There is no problem when starting in "safe mode"...
Anyone have a solution to what i can do??

    Jens

I had the same issue as all of you guys. Here is what really worked for me and though of sharing with you
Just as you could before, you can boot into Yosemite’s Recovery partition by holding down Command-R at startup, and in the OS X Utilities window that eventually appears, click Reinstall OS X, and then click Continue. This launches the OS X installer, which will download a fresh copy of Yosemite and install it on your startup volume.
Alternatively, if you no longer have the original Yosemite installer that you downloaded from the Mac App Store, you can get another copy by selecting App Store from the Apple menu, clicking on the Purchases link, and clicking Download next to the OS X Yosemite entry.
If the word Download doesn’t appear next to the installer, it means that the App Store believes you have a working copy of the installer already on your Mac. You should locate that copy and if you don’t want to use it—because it’s now a couple of point-releases old, for example—either compress it or remove it from your drive. Once you do, you should be able to download a fresh copy from the Purchases page.
The reinstallation might take up to 8 hours. After the reinstalling the OS I have no issues anymore !!! Hope this will work for you too !
    All the best !

  • Gui freezes after pressing execute

    hi,
my program which is done in Swing sort of freezes as soon as press execute until the calling method is finished.
    here is the situation.
the jFrame contains 2 buttons ( ok & cancel )
when the ok button is pressed it creates an object & invokes a method in it
    private void okButtonActionPerformed(java.awt.event.ActionEvent evt) {
    var = new Var(patameter list..);
var.go();this method take some time ( say roughly about 1 min... ) so as soon as I press ok my GUI freezes until that go() method completes.
this is very annoying, coz I have this new jFrame I need to pop up as soon as OK is pressed so it can show the progress of that go() method. This new window wont even show up sometimes until go() is finished.
    How do I overcome this...
    p.s - I read this thread http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5189368&tstart=0
But it was a bit confusing to me..
if you experts can help me out, that would be great. :)
    Cheers

    p.s - I read this thread http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5189368&tstart=0
    Not related to your problem.
if you experts can help me out, that would be great. :)The Swing experts are found in the Swing forum, where this question is asked and answered all the time.
You need to use a separate Thread for you long running task so it doesn't block the GUI thread from responding to events.

  • Macbook air freezes after login on internet

    Hi
I'm having an issue with a student's macbook Air, running 10.6.7 fully updated.
What happened is it was working fine, she was just having a website pop up issue, so I ticked the "Auto Proxy Discovery" setting, like all other macbooks.
Then I quit Safari and opened it again, it loaded some of the Apple page and beach balled. I can move the mouse but everything else is frozen, cannot force quit, so had to hold down the power button. The same thing happens in Firefox. The kicker is that it all works in Safe Mode and I can browse to a website just fine. (All students are required to login to the proxy server)
It works fine in normal mode if I'm just using Word or anything not requiring internet.
She has had this problem before, but it was fixed by the previous IT guy and she did say it ran out of power last night and shutdown. This just seems so strange!
Thankyou for any help in advance.
    Pierre

Ok I have an update which is most interesting.
The student said it worked fine at home over the weekend. They brought it to school today and bam, as soon as they log onto the network it will freeze if it gets any internet traffic. I cancelled the proxy login when opening Safari then it froze after 3 seconds, but I still believe it's internet traffic related.
I turned it off and back on, but didn't log onto the network just yet and it works fine, obviously getting no http traffic.
I guess when I couldn't find the power button like a normal macbook it decided not to like our school

  • Toshiba Qosmio x775 Windows 7 freezes after login

Recently I've unscrewed the lid on the back of my qosmio, the part with one screw with the sticker on it that says "caution pc base can get hot, etc etc". That one is a smaller little area that could be removed on the bottom compared to the bigger, whole part of the bottom. It just had a RAM or something in there. Anyway, when I opened that, there was a bunch of orangish sticky gunk in around the edges, so I cleaned it off with a clorox wipe, careful not to touch the RAM or anything else in there at all, and closed it and screwed it back. The fact that I didn't even do anything to the RAM or whatever it was, just claned the gunk and screwed it back on, is why I don't think it is what caused it, but immediately after that my computer started to freeze right after I would type in my password and the desktop icons would show. The loading icon next to the cursor would load and it would just freeze until I turned my PC off. Am I going to have to get a new laptop altogether?

  • Windows XP instantly freezes after login

    Hey,
So lately I've been having some problems with Windows XP. It seems that my MBP will completely freeze up and become unresponsive, when I finally get it to work via voodoo or go into safe mode the event log shows nothing wrong.
WXP works just fine for a second or two, but it seems that when it reaches a certain step in the startup something will be loaded that just makes it freeze up. This is not present in safemode, as it works just fine. I've no idea what it is though - how would you go about figuring this out?

    HI Timothy,
would you mind me asking where were you able to download bootcamp 1.2, i've been having the same problems as well.. very time consuming. but i have a solution once that happens, upon login, immediately press "CTRLaltDEL" then choose "LOGOUT" then login again, that works for me most of the time.

  • Screen freezes after login on Lion OS X (intermittent)

Ever since upgrading my MacBook Pro (purchased Apr-10) from Leopard to Lion I'm experiencing an intermittent problem where the screen freezes once a user has logged in. The problem only occurs when the machine is started from off and doesn't occur when starting from sleep or when switching users.
This problem affects all users set up on this machine and results in a cursor that can still be moved but can't select anything and a keyboard that is unresponsive. Most times the cursor shows as the coloured wheel. I have left the machine in this state for over 30 minutes to see if it would recover but it doesn't and I have no option other than to perform a hard reset by holding down the power button. Sometimes it can take a couple of hard resets before the machine recovers.
The configuration of my machine is fairly straight forward with an Apple Time Capsule providing backup and WiFi and minimal software installed.
I have found that disabling all 'Open At Login' apps reduces the likelihood of the problem but doesn't cure it.
Has anyone else experienced this problem and can provide a solution as I want to avoid having to revert to Leopard if possible.

Accelerated Video Drivers for the 5770 and 5870 first appeared in 10.6.5, so when running 10.6, be sure to update to at least that version before drawing conclusions.
Otherwise, I think your conclusions that this is a graphics card problem are likely correct. Over a very large sample, these cards have been much more reliable than many previous cards. But you do not have a very large sample, you have one card.
The Mac Pro (65lb tower) uses Error Correcting Code memory, so this is NOT a RAM memory problem or you would be getting kernel panics with machine check, uncorrected error.
Apple hardware test is a tool that only seems to detect the grossest of errors. It is famous for false negatives.

  • Mini Freezes after Login

Today, I tried to start up my Mac Mini and it booted to the login screen normally. When I try to log in, it accepts my password and begins to login. It gets to a point where all the menu extras are loaded, icons are loaded, but quick look hasn't shown all of the previews yet. At this point, everything stops. The cursor doesn't move (no spinning beach ball) and the computer won't do anything.
I tried booting up from an external drive (with 10.5.1) and that worked. I repaired permissions twice and cleared the cache from /Library/Cache and ~/Library/Cache. The problem still appeared. So, I tried unplugging all usb, firewire, ethernet. Just for kicks, I logged onto a different account. There was no problem. As soon as I logged onto my account, it froze again.
What should I do from here to resolve the issue?
    Thanks,
    Shniba45

Here is a little more info:
I can log into other accounts (including the root account)
Bluetooth (which my computer has and was using for a headset the last time the computer worked) has disappeared. Under system profiler, there is no recognition of bluetooth being installed.

  • [SOLVED] GNOME login screen freezes after 3 seconds

    Hello,
today I installed Arch-Linux the first time. I had some issues during the installation (following https://wiki.archlinux.de/title/Anleitu … Einsteiger (its the german version, seems to differ a little from the english version)), but everything went good until I installed GNOME. Now the login screen freezes everytime after quite exactly 3 seconds, unless I press [strg]+[alt]+[f2] fast enough to switch in tty2. Then the screen will only freeze when I switch back to tty1. Once the screen is frozen, I can't switch to tty2 anymore.
I think the problem has something to do with my nvidia hybrid graphic system. During the installation I installed the packages bumblebee, bbswitch and primus, but uninstalled them because I thought they could be the problem. But although I uninstalled the packages, the "Stamina-Mode" status led is turned on after the system has started and the "Speed-Mode" status led not. I think that's a little bit strange, because I can't imagine which process is controlling these leds.
    So I ran just
    pacman -S xorg-drivers
and I had to create the xinitrc-file (because I could not find this file in /etc/skel). Now the default GUI appeared after I ran
    startx
(I saw some windows and a clock). After that I installed gnome, changed the xinitrc-file in my userhome and got the freeze after a reboot.
I don't know if it has anything to do with my problem, but I get the following error-messages everytime I boot:
[drm:ibx_irq_handler] *ERROR* PCH transcoder A FIFO underrun
[drm:intel_dp_start_link_train] *ERROR* too many full retries, give up
[drm:ilk_display_irq_handler] *ERROR* Pipe A FIFO underrun
interl ips 0000:00:1f.6: thermal reporting for required devices not enabled, aborting

Ok, I could solve the problem myself by installing the latest nvidia driver. Now I guess the intel grahic card is not used anymore, but I don't really know...

  • After 10.6.8 freeze on login

    I all
After last 10.6.8 update my MBP 13 2011 does go after login page...
Finder does not appear, i tried boot in safe mode and it go , i downloaded the update again (from site) and installed, but is the same.
    Can anyone help me?

Might be a login item that's causing the freeze.
i tried boot in safe mode and it go
Not sure what that means ?
If you can, try booting in Safe Mode again. Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode. Then check for Login Items.
Open System Preferences/Accounts then select the Login Items tab. Delete any files or apps you have listed there. And go to /Library/Startup Items. Move any files in the Startup Items folder to the Trash.
When you are done, click Restart from the Apple menu (top left in your screen).

  • IMac freezes after startup; locks at Login screen

    Hi,
I have changed the system date to an ealier date - a day earlier. After a few moments, my computer froze. Restarted my computer but it still freezes at login screen - keyboard doesn't work. The system works on safemode though, but normal startup doesn't work at all. No HW was added or removed except for the external USB drive. I also have tried the following items to no avail:
    1) PMU Reset
    2) Changed date/time to normal in safemode and installer-disk startup.
    3) Disk/folders permissions tests were OK. Terminal disk check was OK.
    4) Removed my internet connection and all external disks.
    5) Created another user-admin account.
Please help me here. I'm backing up my data files right now and would reinstall my OS later as a last resort.
    Thanks.
