SE3310 - DLT Tape

I have a Storedge 3310 connected to a X4200 server. Is it possible to attach an external DLT Tape drive to the back of the 3310 array or will I have to install an extra scsi card?

Hi, You basically need a SCSI DLT Tape drive which uses Type III or Type IV tape ( to have copy protection in duplication)
The studio I work at has an old dual g4 because it has PCI slots and a SCSI card.
Final Cut Studio is great until you realize there is no way to output to a SCSI tape drive! I want a new Mac Pro myself but they don't explain how you are supposed to output your DVD project with copy protection...
There should be a hint that says while your at it buy an old SCSI capable G4 or G5 with PCI slots. Even a G5 with its PCI-X slots only has the ATTO $360 card available for use.
Quantum makes most of the DLT tape drives out there. You should contact your replicator to see if they want DLT III or DLT IV tape.
Good luck.

  • Can I import from a DLT tape to DVDSP

I originally exported a project with CSS encoding from DVDSP to a DLT tape for replication. (DDP 2.0 with CSS) I thought I had made 2 masters but it turns out I only have the one master DLT tape of this particular project. The project has since been deleted from my computer.
Does anyone know if there is a way to reimport the files from the DLT master into DVDSP and then export again to a new DLT master?
Or does anyone know of a way I can make another DLT tape of the original DLT tape that doesn't involve using a second DLT machine?
I also have a DVD.img file of the project as well.
    thanks,
    dave

There's no way to bring DLT material into DVDSP, but you do have the image file, so you could use a tool like DVDAfterEdit to write out to DLT using that.
Essentially, DVDAE works as a post authoring editor, meaning that you can make changes to the video_ts files and then save them and write to tape. In your case, you'll not be making any changes, but you will be writing to tape!
If you have access to a PC then I believe Gear Pro will do much the same thing form the image.

  • Which DLT Tape Drive for Replicator

Which brand of DLT tape drive is recommended for DVDSP4 authoring? The DVD+R DL discs are good but the replicator would like for me to use a tape drive. Using Mac G5 w/dual 2.7 Ghz Power pc. 2gig ram. Thanks

    Hi Ray,
A DLT 7000 (make sure it says "LVD SE" on it somewhere, and that you acquire the proper active terminator, along with an ATTO SCSI card to hook the DLT up to, for installation in PCI slot 2 if you're on a G5) using Type IV tapes will get you the fastest writes, while staying readable by all replicators.
A DLT 4000 (same as above) using Type III tapes is just as compatible with replicators, but darn slow writing in comparison.
A DLT 8000 (ditto) with Type IV tapes is the fastest writing in this legacy class of devices, but some replicators might not have one of those drives around. In that case, an 8000 can be set to write at 35G density (instead of 40G), so the replicators 7000's can read it's output.
    Take care,

  • No DDP report when creating DLT tape

When I create the DLT tape, the user manual says that a DDP report should also be created. This does not seem to be taking place - the tape gets completed, but no report appears anywhere.
Has this feature been removed from Encore v2? The duplicating facility I am sending the tape to require a paper report of what is on the tape, and I need to know how to generate something for them.
    Tim Hart.

I think the file you are referring to is IDENT.TXT - and this is not usually required by most replication facilities.
Indeed, unless your tape is not in DDP format, but in DDV-CMF format, it is usually left off of the tapes altogether.
I would expect to see the IDENT.TXT file somewhere on the HDD in your project folder.
Look for both this, and another possibility might be (volumename).TP_IDENT.TXT - or something very similar to this.
I have a couple of projects I need to get to DLT this week, and will run one of them with Encore instead of GEAR Pro Mastering and see if I can find where these files are placed.
BVUt if Encore is creating the DLT tape in DDP format, it's not necessary as Eclipse should tell them what they need to know at the factory.

  • DLT tapes _ layers issue

    hi,
which tapes do you guys recommed for DLT mastering..
recently i have done one project (dvd-9) and sent two DLT tapes (HP DLT IV data catridge) for replication. but our replicator has returned the tapes saying that the **two tapes has written with layer 1 and pls. send the 2 dlt tapes, one with layer - 0, and one with layer-1**
but i have written the tapes with two layers.
I am not able to trace this where went wrong.
does anybody faced this type of problem?. pls. guide me.
    thanks in advance.
    cv

Im just run into a similar problem.
my replicator also told me that i have delivererd 2 Layer-1 tapes. As i also use a adaptec card i cant read back the dlt thru DVD SP.
The second pair of DLTs i just sended to the replicator I read back with gear software on a pc. But I was only possible to open the Layer 0 image with Isobuster.
This behaves correct as a cut image of layer-0. Layer 1
won't be opened by isobuster so im not able to combine both images and realy check if everytihing is alright.
Hopefully my layer-1 is know also correct....
I didnt had such a problem before (about 8 DVD-9 projects under DVDsp3 and 1 under DVD SP4) with the same equipment.
Whats that problem about two times writing layer 0 Aldershot? Is there a thread? What software do you use to write to DLT?
Is there any software out there that is able to read back DVD-9 projects from DLT which are created by DVD SP (like the replicator do)?
    regards,
    Matthias

  • Would be possible give in the master not in a DLT tape?

    Hi,
The company where I'm going to send the DVD to make the copies told to my colleague that I should do the master in a DLT tape. I got a DLT recorder but I found two problems, the first is that this have not drivers for Mac, and the second is that is SCSI, the model is a Compaq 40/80 GB DLT, so I can't use it.
My question is that, would be possible to do the master in a DVD DL? (this project need at least 8 GB)
    Thanks ..... Hugo

Excellent. I'm trying it right now. I've been submitting DLT masters for years but we recently found out that our replicator is now accepting DVD-Rs and, in the interest of keeping the budget down as low as possible, we've decided to give it a go. The DVD-5 was fine, they just accepted a regular build but I was having trouble figuring out how to do a DVD-9. Keep your fingers crossed for me

  • DLT tape unit - Can I use this?

    Hello,
I found the recommended DLT Tape on my country.
It´s very difficult to find one of this and its not cheap.
Can you tell me if that pack can be useful for me?

    Excuse my bad english.

    Pedro,
If you have to get your project to a replicator to have
pressed DVDs made, then the Quantum DLT-4000 (offered in the eBay link) would be a good choice.

  • Quantum 8000 DLT Tape Drive

I've just bought one, but I don't have a clue what DLT tapes I should order for it?
    DLT III or DLT IV
    Or none of the above?

Both will work. The III will take twice as long to write. Buy tapes off EBay for some great deals.

  • Need a DLT Tape Drive?

I have a DLT Tape Drive I was using up until I updated to the latest version of OSX.
I was using it with Retrospect. But now there is an OSX, Adaptec, SCSI, Retrospect issue.
The bottom line is that Retrospect won't work anymore with my setup.
Anyone need a DLT Tape drive.
    Save me from doing ebay.

It's probably your Adaptec Card no longer working under OSX. I think the Atto is the only one that will work reliably under the latest OS

Anyone know which exact DLT TAPE machine will work for us? And where to buy?
We are working on a powerbook so I dont think we can use SCSI.
We need to send a dual layer DVDSP project out for replication with copy protection.
(if anyone knows of a way to copy protect doing only duplication please let us know....we have been told its not possible though.)

  • Can I connect an external DLT Tape drive to the SCSI connector on an E450

Hi... totally new to SPARC. I have inherited an E450. It appears to have the 8 bay option. I have 6 scsi disk drives installed in slots 0 through 5. Internally, there is one ultra scsi controller in slot 2 and two internal cables running from the top of the card, one for each channel. I do have an extra ultra pci scsi card, but when I plugged it into a pci slot, the system would not boot. Bottom line, can I connect an external DLT drive to either Channel A or Channel B at the rear of the Unit and not intefere with other SCSI devices (i.e. the disk drives). Currently, the DLT is set to SCSI ID 8. If this isn't recommended, how do I install the secondary ultra scsi card and have the system recognize it ? Note that the Hard drives have been wiped and I WILL be loading Solaris 10, but have not yet. I wanted to make sure all of the hardware worked first. The second PCI Scsi controller I have is an Adaptec 39160, and I'm assumming it will work IF needed. I'd prefer not to use it if necessary.... ANY HELP is sincerely appreciated ! Thanks, Randy

I suggest you leave the current internal connections just as they are.
You never know when you'll need to add more disks.
That Adaptec card is for PC's.
It won't work in a Sun SPARC-based system.
What sort of SCSI interface is required for that tape device?
Single-Ended? High Voltage Differential? Low Voltage Differential?
You need a card that matches that interface type if you hope it to "drive" the tape.
One quick way to tell, is to examine the chassis of the tape peripheral
and find the small icon that should be at the port for the SCSI cable.
For example, Sun's 375-0005 card is Single-ended and is what you already have inside your E450.
Sun's 375-0006 is a HVD card and would be correct for A1000 and D1000 arrays or L7 or L25 tape libraries.
Sun's 375-3057 card is LVD and would be appropriate for Sun's D2 array.
The manual for that 375-3057 card happens to have pictures of the SCSI icons I just mentioned.
See page 35 in that manual.
    http://192.18.109.11/816-2156-11/816-2156-11.pdf
Once you confirm what's needed by the tape peripheral, we may be able to suggest how to connect it properly.

  • Can anyone give me the DLT tape drive compatibilty list?

    Dear All,
I am starting to make some DVD-9 project with DPS4. But I have to purchase a DLT drive. I have no idea which one to buy and I cannot find any information from the site. Please can anyone give me advice. Thanks in advance.
    Mac G5 Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Basically all DLt drives are made by Quantum and then rebadged by other manufacturers. The ones to look for are 4000, 7000 and 8000. If you can go for a 7000 or 8000 as i think these wrtite tapes faster and if your replicators accept them use DLT IV tapes as they write faster as well. The drives come up on ebay quite regularly and bargains can be had. I have bought six different drives over the years (some as back-ups just in case) and have never paid more than £100 for them (in the UK)
Don't forget you will also need a SCSI card for your Mac (Atto appear to be the only game in town anymore for Mac G5s) and SCSI leads and maybe an active terminator for the DLT Drive
    Hope this helps

  • Solaris 10 and L20 tape loader with DLT tapes

I have also posted this in the Solaris 9 forum, as i have tried the same on a solaris 9 box. I have a Sun 220R hooked up to a Sun StorEDGE L20, the tape device seems to be running fine, as its self diagnostics say its fully functional. I have done both a fresh install of sol9 and sol10 and both times used probe-scsi to see if it recognizes the tape device, but to no avail. I am able to drill into the /dev/rmt/ directory but when i try to either tar, mt -f or dd to a tape on the device it says that it cannot be found. What am i doing wrong ??? please help, im alomost at the point where i need a field tech to come and recsue me. Any help would be welcomed

I would recommend drop your box out to the obp/ok> prompt and run:-
    probe-scsi-all
if you can't detect the box at this point then there is a connection problem.
If you can see the box connected at the obp i would then recommend booting your box with a
    boot -r
to get the device and device tree up and running.
Then have a look in /dev/rmt/ to see if you can see any id's for the tape. If so try a
    mt -f /dev/rmt/0 status
(assuming the tape has been allocated 0)
This should get a sense error or an okay back depending if it has any tapes in it. If this fails you might need to define the tape in the file sd.conf and reboot again.

  • Hot swapping DLT tape drives

Is it possible to hot-swap a tape drive on an Enterprise 4000 running Solaris 5.5.1?
I have an E4000 with an array and tape drive attached. The drive seems to be kaput. I can get it to run for a little while, but my cron backups are failing. I've done all the hardware chacking I can (I'm 2500 miles away from the server) and had the on-site techs check the scsi connections, recycle the unit, clean it, et al.
I don't know where in the chain the drive is, or even if it's on the same scsi bus as the array. Is there any way I can find out which bus it's on, and which bus the array is on?
Assuming it's either the last device on the chain attached to the array or on it's own scsi bus, can I swap it with another drive set to the same scsi address?
    Thanks,
    Mark

As Emily Latilla said, "Never mind..." Answered the question myself.

  • SOLUTION for all DLT 4000 users

If you have had, like me, troubles in getting your DLT 4000 work with DVDSP 4, here is the solution.
The problem is DVDSP continously asking for the DLT to be inserted, also when you've already put it in.
The DLT 4000 is too old and too slow for your Mac, so the drive doesn't have the time to intialize the tape and something like a "timeout" occurs.
To solve, you need to FREEZE DSPro, do this or use some freezing shareware program:
    1. Launch a Terminal window.
    2. Change directory to the DVDSP folder, by typing the following:
    cd /Applications/DVD\ Studio\ Pro/DVD\ Studio\ Pro.app/Contents/MacOS
(note that the backslashes are required in Unix to "escape" spaces in file
    and directory names)
    3. Start the DVDSP application from the Unix shell, by typing the following:
    ./DVD\ Studio\ Pro
    4. DVDSP will run normally, but when you get to the point where it wants you
to insert the second tape, click in the Terminal window, and press
"control-Z" to suspend DVDSP. If you did it right, you will see the word
    "Suspended" in the Terminal window.
    5. Insert the second DLT tape, and wait for the drive to become ready (no
more whirring noises or blinking lights).
    6. When you are ready, type "fg" into the Terminal window, and press
[Return]. This will bring DVDSP process back into the shell's "foreground,"
and will begin running again, and start writing to the drive. Life is good
    again.
Do not close the Terminal window or type anything else into it until after
you are finished, and exit DVDSP normally.
    I've found this hint here:
    http://www.dvdafteredit.com/?q=node/198
I can guarantee that this works.
I've made a lot of DLT with this technique.
    Bye
    Valerio

    Gentlemen,
It is highly recommended that, mimimally, a DLT 8000 and DLT Type IV tape be used for Image submission to replicators.
Writing on the slow DLT4000 is driving your replicator nuts, and some will complain to your clients; as it takes forever to extract the Image in comparison, especially with DVD-9's.
Excellent shape DLT 8000's, about 4 times faster than DLT4000's, can be found on eBay for under $200.
    Take care,
