Seagate 200 Gb HD replacement in iMac = 2 min. delay after wake up
I replaced my factory Seagate 80Gb SATA (ST380013AS) with a 200 Gb SATA (ST3200827AS) hard drive. Ever since, my G5/1.8 GHz iMac freezes for two minutes after waking up. I've scoured Seagate's web site to see if I need to alter any settings, such as start up delay for RAID, but I couldn't find anything.
Initially I thought it may have been related to the 10.4.5 update or any of the security updates, but I did a clean install of the original 10.3.5 that came with the iMac and the wake up delay is still there. I also reinstalled my original 80Gb SATA hard drive and there was NO delay. So I conclude that there is some issue with the Seagate 200 Gb drive and OS X. Other than this annoying issue, the drive performs great.
I also noticed that 2 out of the 4 pins on the original 80Gb hard drive have a jumper on it. The new 200 Gb doesn't but the specs says to install a jumper to limit to 1.5 Gbits/sec on the same two pins. The jumper made no difference and I still have the 2 min. delay.
Has anyone else experience this ? Better yet, does anyone have a solution for this ?

G4/1.67 Powerbook, G5/1.8 iMac Mac OS X (10.4.5)
I can't imagine any reason why MacOS Extended (Journaled) shouldn't be fine, or that the installer's erase would be any different from Disk Utility's, although Seagate's procedure does specifically specify using Disk Utility before continuing with the installation of OS X.
However, there may be a problem using 10.3.5's format routine with a drive running 10.4.x, since Tiger has introduced some subtle changes in the directory structure & (I think) D.U. wasn't updated for this until 10.3.9. If you can't resolve this issue any other way, it might be worth erasing with 10.4.x's D.U. & then re-installing 10.4.x, but I think this has a very low probability of success.
If you haven't already done so, you should run D.U.'s repair disk on the Seagate & Apple's Hardware test on the iMac to see if they turn up anything. Techtools (Pro or Deluxe) also does some disk checks, so try that if you have it. It is possible you have a defective drive, one that is having trouble spinning up or stabilizing until it warms up. I'm not sure any of these utilities will spot that kind of problem, but it is worth a try.
You could also keep Activity Monitor running & frontmost when you sleep the iMac, set to show disk activity. Look carefully at what it shows for drive data rates as your iMac comes out of sleep. If the data rate is very low, then slowly or suddenly ramps up to a high level sometime after you do anything that starts the spinner, it may indicate a drive problem.

Replacing my iMac 1TB Seagate Hard Drive
I have to replace my iMac 1TB Seagate Hard Drive. I need to use Time Machine to restore my Mac- anyone have a step by step procedure to complete this?
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you get your Mac after Apple has replaced its hard disk, they can give it to you with a blank hard disk or with Lion installed. I recommend you to make a clone with Carbon Copy Cloner instead of the Time Machine backup. It will make shorter the process of reinstalling everything again.
If it has got Lion installed:
1. Press Command and R keys while your Mac is starting and open Disk Utility.
2. Select Macintosh HD in the sidebar and go to Restore tab.
3. Drag your external disk to Destination box and press Restore.
4. When the restore finishes, restart your Mac.
If the hard disk is blank, it depends if you bought your Mac with Snow Leopard or Lion. If you bought it with Lion, do the same but pressing Command, Option and R keys. If you bought it with Snow Leopard:
1. Insert the OS X disc and press C key when your Mac starts.
2. Go to Utilities > Disk Utility and select Macintosh HD in the sidebar.
3. Go to Restore tab, drag the external disk to Destination box and press Restore -
I had to replace my iMac due to HDD and Logicboard failure, so I want to reinstall Windows 7 on Boot Camp partition. Will there be a problem reactivating Windows 7 Home Premium?
Hi,
should be no problem.
Best case is you can activate online via Internet.
Worst case is you have to call Microsoft and explain that it is the same computer after a mainboard failure.

I replaced my iMac and want to put apps from my phone onto my new iMac. How do I do that?

External Drive replacement for iMac "SuperDrive" ?
From reading this forum, it seems some iMac SuperDrives (mine included) have serious problems with reading and/or scratching discs. Apparently the only real solution is to use an external drive.
Can anyone recommend an external drive (USB or Firewire 800) that is compatible with the Mac CD and DVD disk-burning functions, iMovie and iDVD, will download software, play movie DVDs, and music CDs? In other words, it should do everything the SuperDrive is supposed to do. Also, it should last more than 6 months!
Thanks!only store they have is by chicago, which is also their office & where all of their tech support staff are located. they have hrs you can call in 7 days a week for help & are great about fixing or replacing anything that quits. haven't heard the same about lacie at all. the lacie drive are prettier tho, but seem more expenisve for what you actually get, imo.

Replacing Intel iMac Superdrive
Hi All,
So, my iMac's "Superdrive" isn't all that super. Over the past couple of months, it started acting up. It began with some scraping noises when I put a DVD into it. A few weeks later, it started to randomly spit out discs. I would put one in, it would read it for a few seconds, then it would just eject it. The last straw was when I tried to install Final Cut Express and it just took in the DVD and never gave it back. I tried all of the various solutions mentioned here to eject the disc, but nothing worked, so I took it to Apple. The "genius" there told me after doing less to diagnose the problem than I did that I would have to pay $400 for a new DVD drive since my computer was out of warranty.
Upon hearing that piece of bad news, I set out to replace the drive myself. I ordered one from a site recommended by a friend. When I removed the existing drive, I discovered that it was a Pioneer DVR-K06PD. The new drive that came was an unbranded UJ-875. It had the same PATA connector on the back, but would not power up when I put it into the iMac. I ordered a replacement drive and received an identical model, which also didn't power up. Just to make sure I didn't damage anything, I reconnected the old Pioneer drive and it powered up just fine. It still wouldn't read anything, but it showed me that it wasn't the cable that was at fault.
*So, my question is, does my iMac only work with DVR-K06PD drives? I'm having a hard time locating a compatible after-market unit since most of the superdrives are for laptops and it doesn't seem like too many people on the web have tried to replace their iMac drive.*
Thanks in advance!Okay, this is really from left field, but here's my tale. I upgraded to Snow Leopard the week it came out. All seemed fine. About 2 weeks after the upgrade, I went to burn a DVD, but when I popped the disc in, nothing happened and I couldn't eject the disc even with system reboots, P-RAM and SMC resets, etc. The System Profiler didn't see the drive at all. It occured to me that it might be Snow Leopard related, but I couldn't find anything to substantiate it on line. A lot of people are reported SuperDrive failures, but there doesn't seem to be a mass consensus that it's software related.
I have a couple of other machines with working optical drives, so I was just going to wait until I had a spare 80 or 90 bucks and buy an external (these days that might have been a long wait).
Today however, I downloaded the Blackberry Desktop software for the Mac (for some odd reason my teenage daughter only wanted a Blackberry even though I was willing to get her an iPhone). Anyway to make a long story somewhat shorter, the Blackberry app install required a restart. And poof, all of a sudden the disc that had been stuck in my supposedly dead Superdrive popped out (after 3 weeks and umpteen restarts along the way) and is now working fine.
Maybe Software Update installed something, that kicked in on this last reboot. Who knows. It seems impossible to think that the Blackberry app installed anything that fixed it. But it might be worth a try.
Or maybe it was just tired an needed a vacation. -
I am replacing my iMac with a Windows 7 OS Wireless Desktop. What storage capabilities will the TC provide?
You are a brave man posting that sort of info around here.
The TC is still a good router with storage ability you can use on Win7. It is slow and more suited to the wireless backup for laptops, which is what it was ideal for. So if you don't yet own a TC, don't buy one.
You can do as well with a USB hard drive on a router. But if you already have it, it is usable, albeit slow. -

I have built sites on my imac, mac mini and MBA all in iweb09
i have built sites on my imac, mac mini and MBA all in iweb09 is there anyway to get them all on the same machine ? (i use mobile me)
Here's what worked for me,
I have two sites, one I mad on my macbook and one I made on my iMac.
First go into the "Library" Folder. In there you will find a folder labeled application support.
Go into that folder and you will find another call iWeb. Your site is in there.
So I took the file for the site out of the iWeb folder on my macbook, and copied it to my
iMac.
I keep them separately. If i put the file from my Macbook into the iWeb folder on my iMac, it would replace the file that is already there. When you start iWeb it will automatically open from that folder.
SO to keep them separate and organized, and to open the one you want there is a little trick.
First copy them all to the machine you want them on.
Take all your site's files and keep them in their own folders in the location you choose.
Make sure that on the machine you are using there is nothing in the iWeb folder native to that machine. Just move that file to another location where you wont lose it.
Now, start iWeb. When you do, iWeb will prompt you to either create a new site or allow you to choose one from a location of your choice. Tada! That is when you can choose whichever site you want to work on from the location where you are keeping them.
Good luck.
What is your site by the way?
mine are www.kloran.com and www.myenglishimages.com -
IMac 2007 model hangs after waking from sleep
Hi there,
I have a 2007 iMac with 2Ghz processor, 4GB RAM running OSX 10.8.2 which has been a fantastic computer up until a few weeks ago. I hardly ever turn my computer off so it falls asleep during the nights. When I wake it though it seems to hang. It doesn't really matter what I try and do it just sits there for ages thinking about what it's going to do. Sometimes for ten minutes before an app will finally open. Once it has settled and decides its going to work its back to its usual self and working fine.
I have tried formatting the hard drive and reinstalling everything, I have also reset the PRAM, and checked in the disk utility that the SMART setting says verified on my HD. I have run software updates so everything is bang up to date, but I'm still having issues. If I reboot and start a fresh it seems to work, but doing this every time it falls asleep seems wrong and unnecessary, plus whilst its hanging it won't let me reboot, I have to manually turn the power off which I don't like doing.
Has anyone got any ideas as to why this is happening? I have not upgraded anything hardware wise, apart from the RAM but that was years ago, so has no impact. Hope I've put enough details here, and thanks in advance for any ideas
SamI believe that this is an artifact of waking up from "hibernation" or "deep sleep"
there are several sleep modes:
regular sleep just cut off power to disk and monitor, but keeps the RAM powered.
safe sleep keeps RAM powered but also writes the contents of RAM to disk, just in case power is cut off (usually for laptops where battery can be drained/removed), but normally would wake up from RAM
deep sleep is full on hibernation, RAM is written to disk and the machine is shut down.
check your hibernatemode:
pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
0 = no hibernation i.e. regular sleep
1 = immediate hibernation i.e. deep sleep
3 = safe sleep
25 = agresive pageout with deep sleep.
therefore it could be that the "sitting and thinking" is your mac reading back the RAM from the hard disk after waking up from deep sleep...
check your hibernatemode.
my first iMac (27" late 2012) exhibited the fan going on full blast upon connecting to power, quiet when the machine was booted, and full blast again when the machine was off.
I am now on my third replacement iMac, the last two are exhibiting identical issue with sleep: the machines will go to sleep and will not wake up, and in addition the power button is disabled, i.e. pressing the power button will not restart the machine.
I am guessing that the SMC crashed, as the only course of recovery is to reset the SMC by removing power, pressing the power button for a while, and attempting to restart (does not work all the time, so I sometimes have to repeat the SMC reset procedure).
after doing some research on the net, I found how to view the hibernate mode, and saw that my machine was set to hibernate mode 5, which is NOT an approved setting, see below.
I used the system pref -> energy saver and clicked restore defaults which restored the hibernatemode to 0.
HOWVER, upon plugging in a powered USB hub, the hibernate mode was automagically reset to 5.
once at hibernate mode 5, putting the machine to sleep manually exhibited the same symptoms, i.e. not wake from sleep and disabled power button.
this was done with an apple care tech on the phone, and he recommended replacing the iMac once again, and sending me a fourth replacement!
overnight I played some more with this
I reset the hibernate mode but this time to 3 and I tried a different USB hub.
hibernate mode stayed at 3 after plugging in the USB hub.
I then created a small shell script to monitor and display the hibernate mode:
function showhibernate() {
while true
do echo -n `date` " ";pmset -g|grep hibernatemode;sleep 10
done
and executed it overnight
this evening after I came home from work, I noticed that the hibernate mode somehow was switched from 3 to 7!?
unfortunately, I did not have the echo `date` on the first version, so I do not know when it was switched from 3 to 7.
however, the machine did wake up from sleep... (so it seems that 7 is not as bad as 5?)
I am guessing that some powered USB hubs cause unexpected changes to the hibernatemode, which in turn cause the SMC to crash, disabling the power button.
why plugging in some powered USB hubs but not others will cause the hibernatemode to switch to 5?
why hibernate mode would automagically switch from 3 to 7?
neither 5 nor 7 are documented in the man page, and the only recommended modes are 0 3 and 25:
We do not recommend modifying hibernation settings. Any changes you make are not supported. If you choose to do so anyway, we recommend using one of these three settings. For your sake and mine, please don't use anything other 0, 3, or 25.
For now I cancled the shipment of the fourth replacement, as this seems to be an issue affecting all iMacs (and a specific USB powered hub), so that a new machine will not resolve the issue...
bottom line, remove the USB hub, and/or try another one.
hope this helps. -
27: iMac Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter quits working post-firmware
I iMac Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter suddenly quit working after I installed Apple's latest iMac display firmware update. This is an Intel Core i5; the monitor is an LG Flatron 24" Wide, and when it powers up it says "no video input" and goes into power-saving mode. No amount of replugging cables helps, but the monitor works fine on other computers.
The Displays control panel just shows one monitor, and clicking Detect Displays does nothing.
I suspect Apple's Display Firmware Update. My installer log shows the following, but the problem only happened today after the latest update:
6/1/10 9:45 AM 27-inch iMac EFI Firmware Update 1.0
6/1/10 9:45 AM 27-inch iMac Display Update 1.0
6/4/10 11:47 AM 27-inch iMac SMC Firmware Update 1.0
6/4/10 11:47 AM 27-inch iMac Display Update 1.0
6/5/10 7:29 AM 27-inch iMac Display Update 1.0
I have automatic updates disabled, but after each update I would see more firmware updates ready, but caution leads me to never install more than one of these at a time, and then to wait a while to see if anything bad happens. The odd thing is that the Display Update 1.0 seems to have been installed three times in this course of events. Alas, there appears to be no way to uninstall a firmware update.

Connection Type: DisplayPort

Status: No Display Connected
It says the Mac sees no display connected, and the display gets no video signal. Since the adapter is an active device (it has powered electronics to convert DisplayPort signals to DVI signals) I suppose it could have just coincidentally died. But that seems unlikely given that the thing worked perfectly just before the last firmware update.
Does anybody have similar experience, or better yet, a fix?Unfortunately the Apple Knowledge Base does not give much information about this update. Such has how to tell if it has been successfully installed. I suspect that because it keeps recurring in the install log that it has not been installed successfully as yet. Are you receiving this update through Software Update? Can you locate the installer for this update? It maybe located in Apps/Utilities.
Some firmware update installations can be interrupted/corrupted by attached devices. If you find the update's installer on your iMac, I suggest that you detach all external devices from the iMac, use an Apple USB keyboard & mouse if available, follow the instructions carefully and install the update manually. If you do not locate the installer I suggest downloading manually from the link below and installing it.
The Knowledge Base article mentions that your iMac should also have a Graphics Firmware Update. I suggest that you download and install that as well.

I purchased an ipad from someone and i set up my apple id for it but when i go to the app Store to update apps, i click on the update button for an app, the previous owners' apple Id username appears and it won't take my apple id password. How do I replace their username w/ mine? It doesn't give me an option... Help! Please!

The iTunes Store on my iPad is set up with all my music already. And at the very bottom it shows my apple Id username. The only place it shows the previous owners id is in the App Store...
You can probably change the ID in the "iTunes and App stores" settings on the iPad....click on the wrong account ID , select sign out, then log in with your own ID, I have not done this but I think it works.....
but I would be more inclined to to the factory reset and start afresh. -
2009 24-inch iMac 3.06GHz (EMC no. 2267). I don't get any audio when connecting my Sony HD TV to my iMac via mini DisplayPort. Is there a fix or hardware upgrade? I'm using a Kanex Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable w/ audio support.
You can connect the audio from your iMac to your TV using a mini jack (like headphones plug) to rca (regular red and white audio connectors used on every TV,DVD, etc) cable.
On your TV, you need to be able to set the audio for the HDMI input you will use to "analog" and connect the rca end of the cable to the analog inputs on your TV. -
My imac will not load after I enter my password. The only thing I get is the arrow from my mouse on top of a blank white screen. Can anyone tell me what this is? I've restarted and turned off several times. I left it on in this state for 8 hours hoping it would reload and work. No luck.
Hello KCC4ME,
You may try booting your Mac in Safe Boot, as it can resolve many issues that may prevent a successful login.
OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
If a Safe Boot allows you to successfully log in, you may have issues with one or more login itmes (while the following article is labelled as a Mavericks article, it is viable for earlier versions of the Mac OS, as well).
OS X Mavericks: If you think you have incompatible login items
