Seagate 300gig sata hard drive not recognized

I'm trying to install a seagate 300gb sata hard drive in my dual 2.0 g5.
I can plug in the two cables and the drive fits in fine, it even spins, however the computer does not recognize that the drive is there.
I've checked the sata in the system profile and tried disk utility but it is simply not there. Could this be a wiring problem or a bad drive? How do I check this?

My guess is that it is a Seagate 7200.9 with SSC on. If that is the case you will need a PC and this tool:

hard drive not recognized during windows server 2008 setup

    Hi,
Whether the hard disk is recognized in BIOS?
Connect it to another computer to see if it could be recognzied incase the cause is the disk itself. Also please check if it is really a RAID instead of a single hard disk - a single disk should be recognized directly while RAID cannot be recognized until
    a suitable driver is installed.

  • IMac G5 Internal Hard Drive Not Recognized

I shut down my iMac G5 with the power button and not through the typical shutdown procedure once and then when it booted up it would not get past the gray screen. I eventually used the Leopard DVD to try to boot it and was able to get to disk utility to look at the drive. I tried to repair the drive but then the machine froze and I had to restart once more. Now the internal hard drive isn't recognized or seen at all. I actually switched out the SATA hard drive with another spare I had and that was not recognized either. I can get the mac to recognize the installation DVD still so I know my computer still functions properly but I just need it to recognize the drive now. Does anyone have any ideas how to resolve this?

Have you access to DiskWarrior or TechToolPro? Either of those might fix your problem otherwise, try booting from the Apple Hardware Test on your install disc and see what it says.

  • HELP. new hard drive not recognized

    HELP!
guys, i badly need your help. i've been searching all over the internet and reading so many user groups already to search for answers to no avail.
I bought a new Western Digital 160GB Scorpio SATA hard drive. I wanted to upgrade my Macbook which only has 80GB as of now.
I cannot seem to install Mac OS X on it. Here's the problem:
    1. it is recognized as "Media" with 0 bytes capacity which I am really surprised why it's like that
    2. PARTITION: partition fails and i receive an error message saying that the "Device is not configured"
    3. ERASING: i also tried erasing it but it also fails; the message reads "The selected disk does not have enough capacity"
i really don't know what seems to be the problem. i can't use it, can't even format it, not partition it.
so now it's just sitting on my desk, useless. i want to use it badly though.
can someone help me please? thanks.

    Hi Paoj
You don't say if you have found that the new HD is Fat32 or not, so I will proceed assuming that it is FAT32. I will also proceed on the basis that there was nothing on the new drive already that you needed to keep or can't download.
    1) Open Disk Utility.
    2) Select your External Drive from the list presented
    3) Select the 'ERASE' tab then the "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" option in the 'Volume Format:' box. In the box below, give the drive a name if you want to.
No need to bother with the 'Options' button etc.
    4) Select "ERASE'
This should rewrite your new drive in HFS+ (Journaled) format.
Assuming the above has worked for you -
The next step is optional, but careful consideration is recommended at this point in time because one can't change one's mind, say, months later.
    1) Still in Disk Utility, select the 'PARTITION' tab.
    2) Under 'Volume Scheme:" choose however many partitions (extra hard drives) you consider appropriate.
For instance, I have an 500gb External Drive partitioned into two drives of about half that size. One I have for expansion and has a bootable version of Panther on it. The other is my backup drive.

  • Advanced Format Hard Drive not recognized by HP DV6000 Controller

    Hello,
I have an HP DV 6000 laptop (6276 I think, I'm at work can't check) that came preinstalled with a Western Digital 160gb 1.5gb/s 5400 RPM drive (Vista) that failed a couple of weeks ago.  So i bought a Western Digital 750 GB WD Black SATA III 7200 RPM 16 MB drive to replace it. I read about people having some problems with Advanced Drive Format hard drives not being recognized by their controller, but also read that depending on the controller and specific Dv6000 model laptop they had-one wouldn't run into problems.
Well sure enough, when attempting to install Windows 7 I received the error that the hard drive was not detected. After researching online I came across an article on WD's site that noted
"Our SATA II hard drives use autospeed negotiation. This enables our SATA II drives to automatically detect the motherboard data transfer rate, making it backward compatible with SATA I data transfer rates. However, some older SATA I controllers are unable to support autospeed negotiation and cannot recognize the drive. This “drive not detected” condition occurs when a chipset is incapable of correctly negotiating the data transfer speed with a SATA II hard drive."
my drive is a SATA ||| but I'm pretty sure it's the same problem.  The site goes on to say a fix would be to  "purchase and install a third party PCI or PCI-Express Second Generation Serial ATA controller card for your Serial ATA hard drive(s)."
    My question(s) are.
1)Is the problem that I am trying to install a Sata ||| hard drive on a laptop with a controller that will only recognize SATA | hard drive?
    2) Or is the problem that the hard drive is an Advanced Drive Formatted hard drive and I need to buy a hard drive with out that specification?
    3) Or Should I buy a SATA controller card as WD suggests on their website and if so will this definitely allow my laptop's controller to recognize the new hard drive and proceed with the installation?
4)Or Should I just return the hard drive and buy a SATA | non Advanced Drive Format hard drive? (question 2 basically)
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi @jasmine00
Welcome to the HP Support Forums.
I certainly understand your issue with the drive upgrade. Unfortunately it is a bit of the nature of notebooks, the sacrifice of a large amount of upgradeability, in exchange for compactness and portability. Whenever a new technology comes out, older notebooks are never really going to be easy to upgrade, it at all. Normally the unit as a whole is tested with a set list of hardware, and only those items are supported.
That being said there is this document that could be helpful with your problem.

  • Addonics "external" hard drive - not recognizing

I just bought an Addonics external drive case with firewire interface - part #AE5SACSUF, and then installed the 250GB internal drive from my imac G5 (which died) to it, and then connected it to my imac G4 through the firewire port. The drive seems to turn on and you can tell it's spinning, but the G4 doesn't recognize it. I'm running 10.2.8. I tried rebooting, but it didn't help.
Does anyone know if OS X need driver software to recognize a converted external drive? The CD that comes with the Addonics drive case has Windows driver software, but nothing for OS X. Any idea how to get OS X to recognize this disk?
    Thanks,
    Bob M

*For Mac OS only, there have been reports of
incompatibility with the Firewire connection on G5
and PowerBook running Mac OS 10.2 using SATA hard
drive larger than 200G. The latest Mac OS 10.3.6 is
    not supported at this time.
For Windows NTFS format, Firewire connection has
report of partition limit at 127G in certain
hardware. FAT32 format has no such limitation. See
    FAQ for detail.
Sounds like it might be incompatible. Are you able
to take it back or upgrade to a newer OS (even though
it may also not be supported).
    Good Luck...
Thanks, this could be the problem. However, I did find that it works with USB, which allows me to back up my drive, but isn't practical, 'cause it's so slow. I have an email into Addonics, to see if I can replace it for something that will work. Thanks again.

  • Seagate hard drive not recognized

I recently bought a Seagate 500GB GoFlex Ultra-Portable External Hard Drive for Mac from Amazon and it worked fine the first time. I added folders of videos and photos to it, unplugged it properly, and let it sit a few days. Now I've plugged it in again to retrieve content from it, and it lights up and sounds like it's working, but doesn't appear on my desktop. I opened my Finder and it was there on the left, but in grey and I wasn't allowed to click on it. The drive does show up in disk utility, but I want to figure out a way to get it to show on my desktop for easier access. Any help?

My guess is that it is a Seagate 7200.9 with SSC on. If that is the case you will need a PC and this tool:

  • New WD Scorpio Black 750GB hard drive not recognized

    Hey guys,
I've purchased a WD Scorpio Black 750GB hard drive for my newly acquired MacBook Pro 5.5, 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. The hard drive is installed (internal) but not being recognized by disk utility. Browsing on Google, I've found this to be a common occurring problem but as there were no direct solutions, I'm posting this in case anyone has any solutions to this issue.
I've reset the PRAM/ NVRAM with no avail.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

Your response is not 100% clear to me.
Have you actually installed the WD and Seagate HDDs in the MBP or just connected them while in an external enclosure?
When you put the original HHD back in the MBP, it is recognized in Disk Utility but cannot be repaired?  Is that the case.
Have you tried to put in the original Installation disk and has the original HHD been recognized and/or one of the other HDDs in an enclosure been recognized?
    Ciao.

  • Toshiba StorE Art 2Tb External Hard Drive not recognized by HP Elite /Win7

I have a new HP Elite Desktop running Windows 7 Home Edition:
I bought some few months ago a Toshiba Store Art 2Tb Ext Hard drive, which until today worked well. Today I started the PC in the morning (with no update of Windows or other software) to find it would no longer recognize the Toshiba Hard drive. It still recognizes the WD drives, and the SimpleTech drives when they are plugged in. All External Drives are powered separately and do not rely on USB power.
I tried the Store Art on other PC's and it works fine. I tried switching the cables, and the cable works on other drives, (and other cables will not make this Store Art work). I tried several USB 2 ports on the PC, with no luck *(but all ports work with the other drives).
I tries COMPUTER, MANAGE, and checked Drvivers and Disks. There was no sign of the Disk available (no malfunctioning disk), it was just not there at all.
I searched the web - tried a range of techniques (unplugging PC from power) and more. No luck.
    The PC Specifications are:
    Operating System
    MS Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit SP1
    CPU
    Intel Core i3 530 @ 2.93GHz 30 C
    Clarkdale 32nm Technology
    RAM
    3.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 665MHz (9-9-9-24)
    Motherboard
    MSI 2A9Ch (CPU 1) 38 C
    Graphics
    HP L1906 (1280x1024@60Hz)
    ATI Radeon HD 5450
    Hard Drives
    488GB Seagate ST3500418AS (SATA) 31 C
    Optical Drives
WD Virtual CD 1110 USB Device
    hp DVD-RAM GH60L
    Audio
    Realtek High Definition Audio
Works well with all other drives. and it worked with Toshiba till this morning.
    Any clues?
    thanks

Well - this is incredible. After leaving the Ext Store Art Drive turned off all day ( but the PC was left on) | cam home ready to try the advice of Keaney (thanks for your advice) which was the same as the techies at work: Try to roll back to OS to last good restore point - eg a week ago. Just before I did anything like that - I just flipped it on to see if a miracle occurred. Guess what. It fired up, was recognised, and all is working.
This is amazing - since my original posting: the PC has not been restarted, not been turned off, not been updated with new OS updates, has not had anything except normal web usage. Similarly the Store Art Ext HDD has been left off for the day, and just turned on tonight - not change plugs or cables or USB or anything. No cables have been touched or plugs jiggled. It just works.
Its like there is a gremlin there - teasing me, testing me, causing me havoc - and laughing all the way. I have no idea how this happened - but will monitor to see if it happens again.
thanks for the suggestions to resolve - for now I will do nothing.

  • Thunderbolt Hard Drive Not Recognized

I've got a brand new Seagate Backup Plus 1tb hard drive and when I plug it in to the Thunderbolt input on my Mid 2010 Macbook Pro running Lion, it's not recognized in Finder. I looked in Disk Utility and it's not there. I looked in About this Mac and the Thunderbolt option under the Hardware section says that nothing is connected to the port. Could someone please help me out here? Does having a Thunderbolt port actually mean that it workds? I'm being a bit naive here. Thanks for your kind help.

2010 Macbook Pros don't have Thunderbolt. They have a visibly-identical mini-Displayport connector, but that's just for displays. If you look at the small icon next to the port, a Displayport icon is square, a Thunderbolt icon is a lightning flash.

  • External hard drives not recognized by imac

I am a new Mac user and have been having lots of trouble getting my external hard drives to mount. I have a simpletech and a seagate external hard drive both NFTS formatted neither of which is recognized by my iMac. They don't show up on disk utility or system profiier under USB ports. They both work on my PC laptop and a friends iMac (OS 10.6.4) just fine. I have a card reader and flash drive that work perfectly on my iMac. Apple support orginally thought it might be the logic board so they replaced it. The new one is having the exact same problem. Does anyone have any idea what could possibly be the problem?? This is driving me insane.

I'm having exactly the same problem with a new iMac purchased one week ago. I have two Maxtor drives and one WD, all firewire 400 drives, all of which mount briefly and then unmount and will not mount again. I am not new to Macs. The drives work fine on the older PowerPC Mac running 10.4.11. These drives contain my backups and aren't recognized by the new iMac. I cannot believe that 3 external drives are all going into failure mode at the same time since they were all purchased at different times and only used as backup drives, so they weren't on all of the time. Is there an incompatibility between 800 and 400?? I'm using a LaCie 800 to 400 firewire cable. Suggestions??

  • Memory modules and hard drive not recognized

I removed and reinserted the factory installed Satellite L505D-LS5007 laptop hard drive and memory modules just as practice for installing a hard drive upgrade and an 8GB memory upgrade. The problem is obviously with the memory and not with the hard drive.
After the first practice try, one memory module was recognized. Also for a few seconds after the first practice try, I ran the PC with the battery installed, but no memory installed. I did not look in the User's Guide first to see that I should have removed the battery before removing the memory.
Now the System Indicator Lights for the HDD Activity and Memory Card Reader do not light up. The PC turns on and the display is solid black with no messages.
Before buying new memory modules, what possible ways might there be to get the PC to recognize the factory installed memory modules and hard drive again?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

When troubleshooting, I always change one variable at a time. I would hate to miss a solution by being in a hurry. In this case, you may have damaged either the RAM or the RAM slot. I would stick with the Toshiba specifications for the RAM, making sure it is the correct size, speed and type recommended. I also recommend that when you replace the RAM that both modules be from the same manufacturer, size, and specification. Try one RAM module in one slot and then the other. And then try both RAM modules in both slots. After the testing you should be able to figure if this is a RAM problem or a RAM slot problem.
In the case of hard drives, the real test is whether or not the Bios sees the hard drive. If the Bios doesn't see the hard drive, it's not going to work. The Bios should see the hard drive whether or not the hard drive is partitioned, formatted or has data on it. My experience has been that many Toshiba laptops will work fine with larger capacity hard drives provided they are the same speed in RPMs, have the same interfacing connection and physically the same size.
Again, prior to doing any work on your computer, make sure that both the AC power has been disconnected and the battery has been removed. Be careful out there. A blown repair job by a non-Toshiba tech is NOT covered under warranty.

  • Thunderbolt partitioned and formatted hard drive not recognized on USB2/3

I have a MBA (mid 2012) and recently purchased a Seagate Desktop Thunderbolt Adapter (STAE129), a Seagate Backup Plus 4TB USB 3.0 external drive (STCA4000100), and Apple Thunderbolt cable. The 4TB hard drive can be separated from the USB 3.0 adapter and the drive placed on the Thunderbolt adapter. I created two partitions (3TB and 1 TB) on the 4TB drive while it was mounted on the Thunderbolt adapter and formatted them Mac OS Extended (Journaled) using partition map scheme GPT. Everything works as expected, the drive hits r/w speeds in the 180 MB/s range (using Blackmagic Disk Speed Test), and no issues at all transferring data to the 3TB partition and using the 1TB partition for TimeMachine.
However, if I disconnect the hard drive from the Thunderbolt adapter and place it on the USB 3.0 adapter and connect it to my MBA, Mountain Lion says "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer and gives me the options to Initialize, Ignore, or Eject. Going into Disk Utility app, the drive shows up without the partitions I created when the same drive was mounted to the Thunderbolt adapter (just shows disk1s1). In fact, the drive label (Disk Description) is different too and the Partition Map Scheme now shows MBR!
To try work-arounds, I went ahead and repeated the partitioning and formatting steps with the drive attached via USB 3.0 and all works fine until I put the drive back on the Thunderbolt adapter where once again OSX reports that the disk is not readable. I've even tried a single partition with no luck. In short, the drive partitioned and formatted on Thunderbolt is unrecognized under USB and vice versa.
Shouldn't the disk preparation and data be consistent across these different interfaces? I would think so. My biggest concern is that if I had a failure in the Thunderbolt setup (assuming the drive itself does not fail), then I can't access my data. This is not a very comfortable situation.
I'm assuming I've overlooked a very basic detail. Appreciate any steer to solve this problem.
    Thanks,
    Rob

Thanks for that, I recently ran into the same problem. I even chatted with Seagate tech support and they didn't know the answer.
My situation is a bit different from you. I bought the 3 TB Thunderbolt version of the drive directly and then purchased a USB 3 adaptor seperately.  You see, I still own a 3 year old Macbook Pro that doesn't come with a Thunderbolt port. I was looking to upgade to a MacBook Air later.  I thought that I might as well buy the TB version now.
In anycase, my old MacBook Pro won't see the drive when I use the USB3 adaptor. I get the same exact error message as you did. I can't really test it on Thunderbolt since I don't have one.  I'm going to go install the Thunderbolt drivers now and hopefully, it will recognize the drive afterwards.  I'll let you know what happens.
BTW, I was thinking of reformatting the drive with NTFS so that I can use the drive on PCs. My mac has the NTFS drivers loaded so it's no problem. I hope this won't screw up the Thunderbolt connection later when I do get the Macbook Air?

  • Yoga 2 Pro Hard Drive not recognized

I got my Yoga 2 Pro as a Christmas present and have had issues with the computer recognizing the hard drive every time it boots up or enters sleep mode (and this is after the 1 initial boot up where I didn't have to enter the BIOS).  Not sure if this is a bios or hardware issue, but I can get it booted after entering the BIOS, changing various (seemingly random) settings (UFEI/Legacy support usually) to get the computer to even recognize that it has a hard drive installed at all.  Once it does boot, as long as it doesnt sleep or shut down, it'll continue to work, leading me to think this is some sort of BIOS issue.  Has anyone been able to resolve this issue without the hassle of returning it to Lenovo an getting a whole new one? The computer is great, when it boots up, but this is extremely disappointing/frustrating to have to enter the BIOS every single time I want to turn the computer on to use it!

@Lenovo Support - Please respond to this issue.

  • Lacie 250GB External Hard Drive NOT RECOGNIZED

HELP! My Lacie External HD that I've had for several years and holds a lot of my files is no longer being recognized on my MacBOok Pro. It used to recognize it instantly when I plugged the USB cable to the USB Port - now, nothing. The Lacie light is on, but my laptop isn't reading it at all. What's going on??? I did a disk utility - it's not showing up there at all either. Is it due to a software update? Don't get me started on losing out on using my entire Dreamweaver/Flash Studio MX 2004...
ALSO, I notice my iPhone is not being recognized in iPhoto anymore either. It is recognized in iTunes. And yes i've heard many folks say email photos should be removed, which i have done so and still nothing!
    HELP PLEASE!!!

Are other USB devices working normally, Eric?
If so, the most likely cause is that either the bridge or the drive itself in your external enclosure has failed (assuming you have tried a different cable)
No, it is most unlikely to be due to a software update. With an old external drive like yours the most likely explanation is that it has simply failed. If it is the bridge, rather than the hard drive itself, that has died you may be able to remove the HD from the LaCie enclosure, put it in a different enclosure, and recover your stuff. In some cases, too, a drive light will illuminate when the drive is connected to the computer, even if the power supply to the drive itself is faulty. You might want to contact LaCie to see if they have any advice to offer about such situations.
Have you tried the drive on another Mac or another drive on this Mac? THis would immediately narrow down the location of the problem, of course.
    Cheers
