Seagate 500 gb and 10.4.2

sorry for my bad english... The question is about compartibility between seagate 500 gb 7200.10 - os x 10.4.2 - and my Early 2005 Dual 2.0 GHz... Thanks for any help
Early 2005 Dual 2.0 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
The seagate HD you mentioned above should work fine on your Mac. (you did not say it is a S-ATA drive, but i think you know it has to be the S-ATA edition, not ATA)
Hopefully this is helpfull or solved your problem.

  • Apple branded ROM Seagate 500 GB Hard Disk for G5 1.6 GHz

I've been reading all the threads here regarding adding/replacing the internal HD's in G5's.
I just bought a used Power Mac G5 1.6 GHZ/80 GB/1 GB RAM/Combo Drive (didn't like that surprise... it was a built to order....guess I'll be getting a Pioneer replacement for that too).
This G5 is in my recording studio and I need to add a large drive as the media drive for my digital audio recording projects since audio generates large files like video applications do.
I've been using the Mac since it was first released in 1984. As a result, I remember all the years of Apple's "special" ROM in their hard disks which made it more of a pain to use other HD's from various sources. Since I did have drives from different suppliers, I've used the old Silverlining software from LaCie over the years to deal with drives that Apple Disk utilities couldn't/wouldn't see.
I see that OWC has a special on Apple branded ROM Seagate 500 GB and 750 GB drives.
The text states that the drive will have a one year OWC warranty.
So I guess the two questions are:
    1. Does it matter any more if the ROM on the hard disk is an Apple ROM or will anything pretty much work. Are there any advantages to having a drive with an Apple ROM in it? Would these be a "better' candidate for use as a boot drive beacuse of the Apple ROM?
    2. What's up with the one year warranty? I see the other comparable drives are usually all 5 years.
Should the one year OWC warranty be of any concern? Obviously, 5 years is better than one year.
I'm assuming these are a discontinued item or were bought from Apple as OEM stock?
So should I care more about the longer drive warranty or the Apple ROM on these seagates from OWC?
Thanks for putting up with another G5 internal HD question.
    John

I forgot to put the OWC link in that takes you the Apple ROM 500 GB Seagate I referenced in my original post.

If you need to extract the drive's content you can remove it and install it in a $10 USB enclosure. It will be readable by any recent Mac.

Do I initialize or is this drive not supported. Is there a way to maunt this drive? I was under the impression from all the forums I've visited, that this drive was not a problem. Even Seagate's presales said that it would work.
Thanks for any information you guys have.

"Do I initialize or is this drive not supported."
Yes. Naturally you'd need to format/initialize the drive before you can use it.

  • Seagate 500 GB Drive

I have an interesting situation with Seagate 500 GB drive I recently installed in my Sawtooth G4. The drive is a Seagate 7200.10.
My computer recognizes the drive, and really, the drive works. However, If I connect an ultra 133 cable to it, my computer cannot download/convert a music CD from iTunes.....My computer crashes. My computer can read files from this drive, and save to it from applications like Word. iTunes will even playback songs that are downloaded to this drive. So everything works, my computer just won't download to this drive from iTunes.
Now here's what's weird. If I connect this drive to my computer via and old IDE cable, my computer will download to it from iTunes, and it works fine for every application I use. The old cable I am referring to is a 3M IDE cable that reads AWM 2651, VW-1, 105 C, 300 V, 28AWG.
    The suspect Ultra Cable reads AWM 20276, VW-1, 80 C, 300 V, 30 AWG.
I connect large drives to the motherboard via a SIIG Ultra ATA controller.
So, can anyone give an explanation for this strange occurrance.
    Thanks,
    Ray

    Hello Ray,
There are a couple of posts on the SIIG card. It may prefer Western Digital to Seagate drives, and it may prefer cable select to master/slave cabling. Mine worked initially when I used already an already formatted drive - I think an ATA-100 Seagate drive with the factory supplied 80 conductor ribbon, but I don't remember for sure. Might have been a mule. Disaster struck when I went to erase and install OSX (Tiger).
Not sure what the diference in cables would be; I think the 80 conductor ATA-100 cables simply supply a ground for each pin.
Hope I'm not leading you astray with a red herring; I still think it's the card, somehow. Don't know how you'd check it. I've used Acard and Sonnet controller cards - and also some awfully raggedy cables - with never a problem.
    Regards ..... Jon

I have connected a new (set up for mac) seagate external HD and although file sharing is turned on the HD doesn't show up on any of the other computers on our network??????  Please help!!!!!

If the HD is setup for Mac and plugged into the AE.. with file sharing on, it should work.
    Try manually mounting the disk.
In finder use go, connect to server, and type in AFP://AEName or AFP://AEIPaddress.. where you replace what I wrote with the actual name or actual IP.
Later versions of Mac OS.. like ML for some strange reason have their preferences set by default to not show network drives.. change finder preference to see everything.

What is the best software for burning a large slideshow with 500 photos and music to DVD?

Are you talking about strictly burning an already put-together slideshow or composing one and then burning it?
My all time favorite slide show maker is Photo to Movie; you can then burn it from there or get it into iMovie and/or iDVD for the "finishing" touch. My favorite burn software is Toast, although you can use iMovie, iDVD, and Finder as well.

  • Are UDP 500, 1701 and 4500 ports being blocked -- VPN ports ??

I recently set up a VPN back into my network (for use on public wi-fi, keep they prying eyes away).
Everything was working and now it is not.  I checked the access to the port via the internet and they are now closed.
Is VZ blocking UDP 500, 1701 and 4500 now.

#1 Is the computer that you are forwarding to a Static IP?
Yes, the server on the inside is a static IP.
#2 Is that Static IP outside of the DHCP Range of the router?
Yes, the static iP is  well above my 4 devices that get their normal dhcp address
i put the starting VPN DHCP address well above my static IP  and yet below where the set boxes start using IPs.
#3 If you don't know what the DHCP Range of the router is, it would help to know the brand and model of your router.
I believe the router is the standard VZ issue ActionTek MIR some model, can dig it up when i get home.
    Things to note:
All my other port forwards (ssh, http, https) are still working, they terminate on the same host as the VPN.
DNS is up-to-date as i can still access the box from the internet  (I am using dyndns updater).
I nmapped from the internet to my host on ports 500, 1701 and 4500 and they are close, where my other port forward ports are open.

  • MacPro cant see Seagate 500 gig anymore see tools wont work either

Ok my 2008 Mac Pro all of a sudden wont see my 500 gig seagate hard drive anymore. I tried putting it in different bays and nothing, tried booting into the seatools ISO and its locked up and cant do anything. I even tried putting the HD in a external usb case and booted it up in both a Mac Pro, Macbook Pro and a PC and nothing.
Is this a sign that the HD is dead or possible something i can do to it to get it back up and running. Not a lot of info on it but i would like some graphic files back for some work i do.
    Its a seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500gig ST3500320AS
So im guessing its the HD but anyone come across this that came up with a fix? sounds like the HD spins and no odd sounds on it.

if i now read your story right have you tried putting your SSD as main HDD in laptop instead of into caddy? do that and see if it loads up fine if it does not still then it sounds like either SSD is about to die so it's acting up causing it to not being regonized on your MSI but appearing fine on other laptops so try runing hard disk sentinel tool for actuall SSD health and preformance % and what i understood right is that Seagate is rubbish company since their plain hdd can easly get aprox 70% health within 36 months usage :/ so i wouldnt be suprised it's worse on SSD of theirs, so if you find health is critical then don't even bother buying a seagate again, by a Corsair or any other quality SSD instead.

  • CTO Seagate 500 GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive Issues (beeps, clicks, freeze, hang)

The other threads on this issue have gotten completely out of hand with most new posters not bothering to read the older posts. So we still get "It's the optical drive" and "It's a problem with all 7200 RPM drives" or "It's all MacBooks that have the problem." Those posts aren't helping any of us with the specific issue noted in this subject fix our problem and gather helpful information. This thread is only for those experiencing issues with the CTO Seagate Seagate Momentus 7200.4 ST9500420ASG 500GB 7200 RPM hard drive. If you don't have that drive and are having problems with your new MacBook Pro, please start a new topic or look for an existing one that matches your issue.
    _CTO Seagate Momentus 7200.4 ST9500420ASG 500GB 7200 RPM Problems_:
    1. *The drive beeps intermittently*. Unusual sound and not typical of any other hard drive I've ever used in a MacBook Pro or PowerBook.
    2. *The drive clicks/clacks quite loudly*. This is much louder than typical drive behavior.
    3. Most importantly, *the drive freezes or hangs* in conjunction with the other sounds. It causes games to freeze for a second. It causes HD video to hang momentarily. It brings whatever task you're doing to a complete stop for a second or so, several times per hour.
    4. These issues all occur while the MacBook Pro is sitting on a desk, untouched and unmoving. It's not related to any specific user input or action.
    Troubleshooting
    1. SMS: The built in SMS may conflict with the G-Force technology in the Seagate drive. While it's odd that Apple chose to use the drives with G-Force, disabling SMS has not fixed the issue.
    2. *OS X*: It's been suggested this is a problem with OS X and its power management. However, users have reported the problems continue when booted into Boot Camp. This would seem to eliminate OS X as a factor.
    3. *Normal Behavior*: Several users have said this is normal behavior for 7200 RPM drives. Apple themselves have reportedly told this to users calling for a fix. I can only say I've used 7200 RPM drives in my MacBooks exclusively since they were available and I've never had this issue with any of them. This is not normal behavior, especially the freeze/hang associated with the beeps and clicks.
    4. *Change Energy Saver Settings*: Set Energy Saver so the drives won't sleep. This has not fixed the issue for me. I always set the drives not to sleep as a matter of practice (necessary for HD video & Aperture work) and the issue remains.
    5. *Problem with all MacBooks regardless of drive*: This is total b.s. We've got several MBPs here at my company and none of them have the issue.
    _One Solution_
In May, I purchased a Seagate Momentus 7200.4 ST9500420AS 500GB 7200 RPM from NewEgg.com. Note that this is a non G-Force model of the same CTO drive. I had been using it in an external FW enclosure. I decided to swap the drives. *With the NewEgg 500/7200 drive in my 2009 MBP (3.06GHz), all of the issues are gone. The drive doesn't beep, doesn't click, and never, ever hangs or freezes.* It's whisper quite and very, very fast. I literally can't hear it unless I put my ear on the case.
The CTO drive, now housed in a FW800 external enclosure, continues to have the same problems. It no longer beeps, but clicks and clacks loudly, and still hangs and freezes. This would seem to entirely isolate the drive as the problem and remove the MacBook Pro from the equation.
Some posters in the other thread claim that Apple engineering has reviewed the problem, witnessed the beeps, clicks, and freezes, and had labeled them "normal behavior." If true, this is unacceptable. It is impossible to do any professional work, or even play a game for that matter, with a drive that constantly hangs or freezes. We have to stay diligent in pursuing a fix. Be polite, be friendly, but be persistent.
Message was edited by: KBeat Fixed typo, added one more troubleshooting step.

My revision is 0006APM2 also. I would like to know this info as well especially since some posters are not having this problem.
That said - I think there is a business strategy behind all this. Apple is saying there is no problem so that they don't have to recall ALL drives in whatever spec, revision, etc., since that is an extremely expensive resolution. Instead, I think they will quietly fix it in an update and all of a sudden you will notice your drive isn't clicking and hesitating. Perhaps if there are drives out there that can't be corrected in this manner, they will issue a recall/replacement. Being in the software business, I tend to think it will play out this way. The few hotheads that actually return their machine will pale in comparison to the cost of a recall - especially if the affected batch of drives was large in scope.
I think if everyone sits tight it will get fixed. If not, the drive is only a $100-$150 component of this expensive computer and it can be user replaced. I do however strongly encourage anyone with this problem to report it to Apple regardless of the outcome.

  • I'm trying to use 10 in win 8 on a Acer 500 tablet and it doesn't seem to work with touch. It's like it's too sensitive and can't ever manage to hit the items intended. IE 9 and 10 seem to work just fine.

Firefox 10, win 8 consumer preview. Acer-500 Tablet.
Firefox apparently isn't optimized for touch or if there are adjustments or options I haven't been able to find them. This problem was also apparent in the Development preview on Win 8. I gave up trying to use Firefox and went with IE 9/10 which both worked fine using touch. I thought since installing win 8 consumer something might have changed but the problem still persists. I've tried a stylus to see if it was just my fat fingers but to no avail. Any ideas?

I tested both ways. With "open in low resolution" ckecked the size of the images is cool, but it is low-resolution including Photoshop appearance.
If "open in low resolution" is unckecked the appearance is good but the very small size.
See the image below. It has 650 x 732 px, 72 dpi. The font of the text "Neste aniversário ..." is with 18pt.

  • External FW/USB Western Digital, Seagate Disk Drives and 'Sleep' function

As you are aware, most external disk drives be they FW or USB (and irrespective of the manufacturer, save for LaCie) have a 'sleep' function built into their Firmware. In the case of the Western Digital and Seagate Ext FW drives I have, this function cannot be disabled and this per both WD and Seagate.
Unfortunately this is extremely annoying if using Photoshop and Bridge...it takes about ten seconds for each disk to spin up while the latter programs search the drives. (In Windows this can be enabled/disabled. Not so with the Mac O/S I have been told). Multiply this by six of the aforementioned drives and it can be quite time consuming.
Is there an OS-X workaround for this?
    Thanks again,
    Lyman

I always avoid vendor cases. Might want to look at an Oxford 912 etc, or better yet, why use Firewire when eSATA works so well?
