Seagate 500Gb 5400RPM - Seagate 7200RPM

My problem is pretty much sorted now, but I thought others may be interested in my experiences. Essentially I upgrade from a Macbook to a Macbook Pro UniB 2.4Ghz - I put in a WD 320Gb 7200RPM drive, and then later upgraded that to a 5400RPM Seagate 500Gb.
Anyways, I wasn't too happy with the performance of the machine... Random pauses, generally a little lethargic. Anyways, I've now put in a Seagate 7200RPM unit and the transformation is massive - it almost makes me think there's something wrong with the 5400RPM unit... But I can't find anything screwey with it. For what it's worth it's now in a Dell unit and seemingly working well enough, and quickly. It's just not too great in the MBP?
Anyway, have a look here if you're interested: http://www.markc.me.uk/MarkC/Blog/Entries/2009/6/13Macbook_Pro_Hard_DiskUpgrade.html

I had a similar experience when I tried the Seagate 500 GB 5400-rpm drive in my MacBook Pro earlier this year. From my admittedly anecdotal observations, the drive seemed particularly slow on read access times. Also, I would occasionally get an odd UI stuttering effect when lots of data was being read from disk.
I found similar reports from other users on the forums at NewEgg.com. Reports on various tech sites (e.g. Tom's Hardware) seemed to confirm that read access times were around 19 ms, compared to 15 or 16 ms for many other drives. A difference of 3-4 ms might not seem like much, but it is apparently noticeable.
A week later, I switched to the Western Digital 500 GB 5400-rpm drive and the problem disappeared immediately.
Now I'm running the Seagate 500 GB 7200-rpm drive in my new MacBook Pro, which also seems quite snappy, perhaps even more so than the Western Digital. My only complaint is that the 7200-rpm drive also produces more vibration in the MacBook Pro's unibody chassis. But I expected as much and am slowly learning to live with it for the sake of performance.

  • Seagate 500GB 7200RPM HD in my BRAND NEW 15.4" 2.66GHZ Macbook Pro

    Hi,
I just purchased a new 15.4" 2.66GHZ Macbook Pro (with SD card slot) and swapped in a Seagate 500GB 7200RPM HD. I've noticed a few pauses accompanied by various "clicks" from the HD. I tried Apple's Firmware update, but it doesn't work with this drive. The firmware updater throws up a window stating that "this computer does not need this update." Obviously I should have bought the HD directly from Apple, but since I didn't, is there any way to apply this firmware update to the aftermarket HD? If not, has anyone been able to resolve the issues with this drive?

    BennieLau,
Apple makes its claims on battery life. However, with Snow Lion as OS, a new battery will probably last around 7 to 7.5 hours. On Lion, however, it's probably 5-6 hours. There as a new update today, however, so it's impossible to determine the battery life at this point.
Several factors may complicate your battery life, so this is a rough estimate of battery life.
Useful info? Unuseful? Post here with your comments, compliments!

ok I found another on eBay
"Seagate 250Gb Internal IDE Hard Drive 7200RPM"
(INFO) This is a still in the sealed package 250Gb Internal IDE 3.5", 7200RPM Seagate Hard Drive. This is a Seagate "certified repaired" HDD that was shipped to me for a return. It has never been installed nor has it ever been open. The label also indicates it is a Barracuda 7200.8.
Should this one work on my MacBook.
And thanx you for help on my first question.

  • Seagate 500Gb FreeAgent GoFlex HD -Can't drag folders from Mac on to the HD.

I purchased a Seagate 500Gb FreeAgent GoFlex HD. I will be copying files/folders on to a PC and a Mac. I have a MacBook Pro and I'm not able to drag files/folders to the Seagate hard drive from my Mac. When I drag them to the HD, I get the circle w/ the line across. I did the Mac install and chose the option for PC & Mac. Any ideas why my files/folders won't copy onto the Seagate hard drive??

Someone? Please?? Is it possible that I am the only one who noticed this!?!?

Did you ever figure this one out?
I have seen two external Seagate drives (FW, 500GB) stop mounting after about one use on a mac. Neither of them would show up under windows XP or 2000 afterwards.
I reformatted one, and am wondering if I'll need to do the same thing to the other.

  • Seagate 500GB SATA

I purchased a new Seagate internal drive for my T60p to be used either as the boot drive or as the bay drive for data.  However, I can not get the machine to fully acknowledge it.  It will show in the boot list, but it will not boot or appear as an available drive.
I have updated the SATA AHCI Controller driver, but haven't been able to find an update to the UltraBay ATA Storage Controller.
If I boot my XP Prof OS from the Bay Drive using the original 100GB drive, and have the new drive in the Drive 0 location, I can at least see it via the Computer Manager.  I was even able to format it, but it not accessible.
This new drive has a 3GB transfer rate, and I have tried the jumper setting to reduce it back to a 1.5 GB rate.  No luck.
Is this related to a 137GB limitation on the drive size?  If so, my Seagate 500GB USB drive works fine, but that may be the difference between USB and an internal drive.
    Any help would be appreciated.

After lots of trial and error getting my ThinkPad hard drive upgraded, I was able to clone it without reloading Windows. The solution for cloning to this drive from the original is as follows:
Update the bios to the latest version.
Apply the firmware upgrade to the hard drive as needed. The firmware upgrade is in the downloads section of Lenovo's site.
If running XP, make sure it's SP3.
Unplug the power, remove the battery, then remove the old drive.
Install the new, empty drive, put the battery back in, and plug in the power.
Connect the old drive to the USB port.
Boot the computer using a bootable cloning software disk. I used the bootable version of Seagate Tools since I had a Seagate drive. Easeus Partition Master should work fine as well.
Proceed with cloning from the USB attached drive to the new drive, keeping the original partition sizes the same.
After the process completes, the machine will boot from the new drive. Use Easeus Partition Master to move the sevice partition to the end of the drive, and give the unallocated free space to the C: drive. Once that is done, you have your new drive with lots of free space.
I hope this post helps someone get spared from a lot of grief in trying to upgrade their drive...this procedure is far from what it takes on just about any computer, but it's the only successful way to clone the drive into something that's bootable on the ThinkPad. The only other option is a new install of Windows, then transfer in your data.

  • Upgrading from 500GB 5400rpm to 500GB 7200rpm

    Out of curiosity, is it worth Upgrading from a 500GB 5400rpm to a 500GB 7200rpm in a 13" Macbook Pro 2011?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi S,
Depending on what you normally use your MBP for, and unless a few seconds here or there are that important to you, maybe not. Plus, the HD which shipped with your MBP is tested for compatibility by Apple. When you install a new 7200RPM, there is the possibility of increased noise, vibration, heat, and decreased battery life. Some people also have compatibility issues with a new HD. All in all, I probably would not.
EDIT: Was not intending to disagree with K T. As you can see, there are different opinions/experiences. Sorry about that.

  • Seagate 500GB 7200.9 HD

Ok, I just ordered 2 Seagate 500GB 7200.9 hard drives, but have been doing some reading (mostly at http://forums.macnn.com/65/power-mac-and-mac-pro/330172/the-seagate-mac-pro-comp atibility-issue/) and now am very worried. Are these dirves compatible? And will the preform at fulll speed? I also want to set them up in RAID 0 (keeping a seperate 250GB as boot drive). Should I cancel my order and try for a different set of drives? If so, suggestions?
    Thanks.

Yes. They are slow. Only the 750GB (WD7500AAKS) is an outperformer. I have replaced my WD740 Raptor and Maxtor Maxline III with the 7500AAKS.

  • Does macbook pro work with Seagate G protection 500g 7200rpm??

I bought Mac Book 13" 2.53Ghz Model few days ago.
    I try to upgrade my 250G HDD to Seagate G-protection 500g 7200rpm
Just now, I asked clerk by ichat , and she said Mac Book Pro 13" Model doesn't make that writing speed. But I read some review of upgrading HDD with 7200rpm on MacBook Pro 13" and that works well.
So I don't know which one is correct?
Also Still now is there a problem with Seagate G-protection 500g 7200rpm like click, beep, freeze??

The speed of the disk is completely irrelevant, Moonseok.
You can use a 10,000rpm SATA drive if you like.
Your most likely problem is that you have not booted from your OS DVD (put the MacBook pro Disk 1 in the drive and hold down the "C" key while turning the computer on) and then used Disk Utility (from the installation discs 'Utilities" menu) to partition and format the new drive for use with a Mac.
You need to use a GUID partition scheme (under "Options" in the "partition" tab when using Disk Utility) and "HFS+ (journaled)" for the File System.
Most "bare" drives come partitioned and formatted just for PC use using FAT 32 or NTFS format , so you need to change this before you try to install the Mac OS X when fitting them in a Mac if you want to be able to "boot" from the drive.
    Cheers

  • 5400rpm or 7200rpm? - MBP 2011 17''

    Hi people!
I will buy an MBP 17'' but...
    I don't know if I should choose 5400rpm or 7200rpm hard-drive.
I am developer and I want good mobility...good battery autonomy.
With 5400rpm, mac have 7 hours browsing... but with 7200rpm drive, how much i will have? 6,5 hours?
7200rpm makes much difference in terms of performance, heating, battery?
    15'' model has Seagate Momentus 5400.6 500Gb...
    What are drives from 15'' and 17'' from 750Gb 5400rpm or 500Gb 7200rpm?
    Thanks!
    Sorry for my bad english...

Unfortunately the drive mfgrs. don't agree. Both variations carry the same MTBF estimations. Power consumption of the 7200 variant is usually between .1-1.0 watts depending upon the operating state: idle, startup, read, write. Heat generation is also negligible although the 7200 RPM variant may be warmer during heavy usage like doing a backup or restore. However, 7200 RPM drives are faster, and more so than just minor. Realizing the difference, however, depends a lot on the rest of the hardware. Put a fast drive in a USB box and it's slow. Firewire it's faster. But both interfaces are saturated before the drive can reach its potential. If the drive's SATA interface supports 3.0 Gb/s then putting it in a machine whose controller only supports 1.5 Gb/s will prevent the drive from reaching its potential. And this only deals with the basic interface.

  • MBP 15" 2.4GHz - 5400rpm vs 7200rpm HDD?

I intend to buy a 2.4GHz 15" 4GB RAM MBP. I am in a fix right now about going for which of the two HDDs 5400rpm vs 7200rpm (both of 200GB). The MBP with the default configuration(ie with 5400rpm) is for only 1699$ due to some stock clearance offer at my educational store. But, if I go for the 7200rpm the machine will cost me $1799+98, implying more $200. I intend to buy the extra 2GB RAM separately. Is it really worth it spending more 200$ on the 7200rpm HDD in my machine? I am a performance freak, and being a computer graduate student end up spending most of the time on my machine. Anyone who has used both the machines, please let me know if there is any noteworthy difference? I do understand that the decision is my personal one; but, please throw some insight and help me in making a decision quickly.

I bought a 7200rpm 100GB drive with my mbp. About a week ago I upgraded to a 7200rpm 320GB drive because I needed the space. If you, like me, are a performance freak, go with the 7200. I did and never regretted it. In fact i dealt with the space issue by buying a 500GB and a 1TB external (FW800). Because the new current MBPs use a 3.0gbps SATA interface, getting the 5400rpm might give you a bottle neck.
this is what i have now:
    http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/products/laptops/momentus/momentus_7200.3/
    original was the momentus 7200.1
If you compare the 5400.5 and the 7200.3 you'll see that there is a 20MB/s difference is sustained transfer rates. Considering the 300MB/s transfer rate of the 3.0 SATA interface, you will notice a difference. SATA likes 10k rpm plus, 5400 just doesn't cut it anymore. If you don't care about voiding the warranty, go to newegg and get the 7200.3 320GB. I got mine for about $175ish OEM (can't remember). Then turn your old one into an external.
Oh, and this thread is off limits for bickering about the differences between mebibytes, megabytes, and megabits.

  • Noticeable difference between 5400RPM and 7200RPM?

I am just wondering if anyone notices a large difference in loading times, games, etc. between the 5400RPM and 7200RPM hard drives? I am a bit worried with movie editing and music, gaming, etc. Thanks.

Yes, well sort of. I upgraded my 5400 RPM drive to a 7200 RPM drive and the difference is very noticeable. Some 5400 RPM drives are slower than others some are faster..same for 7200 RPM drives. So if you go from a slow 5400 RPM drive to a fast 7200 RPM drive the difference is very noticeable.

  • New Seagate 500GB 7200RPM Hard Drive Question

    Hi Everyone,
I bought a new i5 15.4" Macbook Pro on the first day they were available and yesterday I upgraded the hard drive from the stock 320 GB 5400RPM Drive. My question is that with the stock drive I was able to hear the heads park on the drive if the macbook was ever moved suddenly or fast. Since putting the new drive in yesterday and doing a clean install on the drive. Although it is super silent and I don't feel a lot of vibration on that side of the macbook, I never hear the heads park. I also don't or haven't heard any clicks that other users have been experiencing with this drive, or at least not yet anyways.
Is there a way to test to make sure that they are in fact parking?. The Sudden Motion Sensor is enabled in the system profiler. What else can I check out?
The exact model of hard drive I installed was: Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500GB Model:ST9500420AS
This model doesn't included g-force. As I was told to get the one without it.
I just want to make sure the drive is functioning properly as it should...
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated
    Thanx
    Greg

Wouldn't it be easier to go the Apple Logo on the upper left corner and check about this Mac and click more info. There you will hopefully see:
    Sudden Motion Sensor:
    State: Enabled
I did a swap too. Removed the stock 500 GB 5400 RPM and installed a 500 MB 7200 RPM. Sensor Enabled.
    Good Luck!

  • Recently my keyboard on my macbook pro died. i backed up the machine to my Seagate 500GB hard drive, successfully, and sent the notebook in for repairs. Now that the macbook is repaired, i can read from the seagate, but not write to it. It says read only.

Recently my Macbook Pro's keyboard failed. Using my wireless keyboard, i managed to backup everything to my 500gb Seagate external hard drive. I sent the machine in, had the keyboard repaired, and now the machine is back, and i am loading my content back onto the macbook. My problem is that the drive is now read only, and i have searched for all the obvious fixes. The lock on the permissions secion of the info block on the drive. (not present). I have even tried disk utility, but all the options are greyed out.
I am a graphic designer, and so i use my external drive extensively to move artwork around, so it is important that i can make it writable. It worked perfectly on this very same machine, two weeks ago, and nothing has changed on the drive, so i can only assume it is a software issue on the operating system.
I have read through all the forums, etc, and can find nothing that works. I am loath to change anything on the drive, as it was working perfectly on this system before the system went in for its repair.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • My iMac ( Summer 2010 ) internal Hard Drive failing.. It's a Seagate 500GB HDD.

My new iMac  ( summer 2010 - July 2010 ) internal Hard Drive is failing..
    1)  sometimes the imac can't see the hard drive to boot from..
it would stay in the grey screen ..
    2)  sometimes the imac boots up after a cold start.
but some applications such as Safari would die or crash on me.
I think the file system on the mac is corrupted.
I believe that the internal hard drive is failing..
I can boot up from the external firewire 800 hard drives fine..
    The internal hard drive:
    Model:   ST3500418AS
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 SATA 3Gb/s 500GB Hard Drive

Why not starting from the external HDD, and then do a "Repair Disk" of the Seagate.
If that does not help buy a new HDD, put it in and clone the latest external disk to it :
When you have two external disks, make a clone of the Seagate on the one that does not have the latest backup, because the Seagate may fail while doing the cloning. Use Carbon Copy Cloner or Superduper.
