Connect the HDD to your MBP and open Disk Utility>Erase.  Select the external HDD from the column on the left and the click on the ERASE button.  Select the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format.
Ciao.

Not with equal reliability. Avoid Western Digital.
    Most reliable are these:

I finally got a representative that was able to help me, she had me go to Get Info, by right clicking iMovie from the finder, and I had to click on Sharing & Permissions>Everyone>Read & Write

  • My Seagate Expansion 500GB external hard drive no longer works with my Mac

    Hi
i have had a seagate expansion hard drive for the last year ish and it has worked as a time machine without any problem. when i first got it i had to format it to windows but that was simple and worked well. recently i unplugged it for a few weeks and have recently plugged it back in. now it won't register as my timemachine or show in finder.
I went into disk utilities and clicked 'repair' then click 'verify and these are the two errors i recieved.

I am hoping that someone has had the same issue and is able to help me with this problem.
all my back ups are on the hard drive so i really don't want to have to format it as i don't know what i will lose.
I have checked for updates for my Mac and it says there are none.
    cheers
    Jon

You need something stronger, such as DiskWarrior, to repair the HD.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Your external disk is formatted with NTFS, a filesystem that OS X doesn't support in order to copy data to this filesystem.
If you don't want to erase your hard disk, you can use an application like Paragon NTFS that will allow you to write in your external drive without having to format your external disk.
Another option is to format your external disk. As you have movies, you should format it in exFAT. You have to format the external drive on a PC unless you haven't got a PC. If you want to do it on a Mac, use Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html
If you aren't going to use your external drive with PCs, you can also use "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)", designed for Mac OS X but it won't be read in any PCs

  • External Hard Drive Formatted For Mac

    Hello,
Can some one please point to a link to an external hard drive that comes formatted for Mac out of the box? My 90 year old mother-in-law needs a time machine backup and would freak out if I tried to guide her through Disk Utility to reformat the external drive she just bought from Radio Shack. So an out-of-the-box plug-n-play drive would work best for her.
Does anyone know of any? I know LaCie is/was Mac focused, but I need to have a drive that is ABSOLUTELY Mac plug-n-play when it gets delivered to her house.
    Thanks!

Do you Skype with her? Seems like you could just do a Skype call and share her screen so you can literally tell her to click this, click that. I've done exactly this with my mother across the Atlantic to solve a different problem. If she's capable of plugging the new drive into the Mac (which it sounds like you intend her to do anyway), I'd have to believe she'll be able to follow your instructions if you can tell her which options to click. Formatting a drive is relatively few clicks. And, I think this wouldn't be any harder than figuring out how to setup Time Machine...

  • New MacBook Pro (first Mac). I need to move my itunes library from my pc to a networked external hd (wd passport for mac). I have an ipod with all my media (including video) and i have itunes match. What is the best way to do this? PC to Mac HD ...

Can I just consolidate and copy to the journaled hard drive over the network?  Will a pc recognize a Mac formatted hard drive?  I have searchd the forum and online for hours and can't seem to find anything that specifically address this.  Does anyone know the best solution?
Itunes library on PC -> WD Passport for Mac (connected via airport extreme to new MacBook Pro).  I plan to use this as the default location for my library because the new Pro only has 256 GB onboard.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

A PC cannot read a Mac formatted drive without using special software (MacDrive).

  • External Hardrive - from PC to Mac

I recently got a Macbook and when I plugged in my external hard drive (used originally on my Toshiba) I am able to see all my files however when I wanted to transfer photo to the hard drive I am not able to. No pop-up messages just the circle with line through it that doesn't allow you to move documents.
Looking online there seems to be complicated ways of reformatting a hard drive but will this wipe all the data? And, if I want to be able to use it on both a PC and a Mac is that possible to have it formatted for both?
Any help would be great for a non-tech savy Apple convert!
    Thanks

    1. Yes, it will. In any case, all the files you want to keep should be on at least two drives; one may fail at any time.
    2. Use FAT32 or exFAT.

  • Can a Windows Hard Drive be reformatted for MAC?

I have a windows computer that I do not use anymore, that I put a 2nd Hard Drive in it. I was wondering if it is possible to install it in my G5 and format it to use it with MAC?

If you have a PATA/Ultra ATA drive, you will need an external FireWire enclosure.
Once you have attached your drive to your G5, use Disk Utility in the Utilities folder to reformat the drive with the Mac OS X Extended filesystem.
