Seagate External Hard Drive with Imac - How to connect 2nd Firewire Device
I just bought a new Seagate External Free Agent HD to use with my IMac on a Firewire 400 but was wondering if I keep the HD connected what can I do to connect another device (video camera) at the same time with another firewire? I thought my IMac had 2 Firewire ports but it looks the 2nd port is for something else. Is there some kind of Hub I could buy or could I connect the camera through the HD, it appears there is another Firewire connection there? Thanks and any advice would be helpful?

which shipped between 2002 and 2004, they all have the same
number of FireWire ports: 2 - 400 MBit/s (8W total power.)
You may need to look into a FireWire Hub, one that is self-powered
from an external AC power adapter and not use limited FW port
power from the computer, as that is limited.

the half-dome white base & chrome display arm, you may need
to compare your machine with either the iMac G5 or Intel iMac
forum areas, since the hardware did change over the years.}
Be sure to not overload the FireWire, or other ports on the Mac;
no matter which model or version you may have. In the case
of USB, a self-powered (uses AC adapter) hub is recommended
and in the case of FireWire, some products may have a port in
them, but to daisy-chain these is a mistake. Underpowered
device issues, or overtaxing the Mac power supply may result.
An external firewire enclosed hard disk drive with accessory FW
port may have been supplied with that port given extra power;
if the FireWire drive uses an AC power supply and not port power.
If the external FW drive is in heavy use, you may be able to tell
if the port on there can support a camera. It probably won't.
By the Mid-2007 Intel iMac, there was a difference in the FW
port configuration: 1 - 400 MBit/s, & 1 - 800 MBit/s (7W each.)
So, you may have an iMac with two different FireWire ports.
Some towers also have or had support for both FW types;
and Ethernet, USB ported devices, and audio options.
For those machines with a less than desired FireWire
support, there are FireWire Hubs, in both specifications;
and retailers or online store links show them in both
Mac and more general PC listings. These would be
self-powered Hubs and not rely on the Mac port power.
These are a bit different and not all peripherals that say they
may work with one or the other will necessarily do so in both.
An example maybe if you buy a FW 800 external HD enclosure
and it says it also supports FW400. It may not boot OSX in 800.

I have a seagate external hard drive with files transferred from my windows pc. If I will download NTFS Driver from seagate to my mac, could I install it safely without harming my files? I am afraid.. I might erase all my important files during the installation..

(I have a Macbook Pro running os x version 10.8.2)The external hard drive must be formatted either in Apple's HFS+ or in Microsofts FAT32 in order for it to be recognized. You can format the drive by connecting it to your Mac and bringing up "Disk Utility".

That shouldn't be attempted. Unless the drive is specifically designed for it, which very few drives are, connecting it to more than one computer(which includes the base station for this purpose) at any given time through USB or FireWire can damage it.

So I bought this hard drive knowing that it can be used back and forth between Macs and PCs. I currently have a PC, but it's pretty old and I figure I will be getting a Mac after it dies. Try partitioning and erasing it.
Run Disk Utility.
Plug in the drive you are about to erase.
Select that volume. (The one that is NOT your system disk.)
Click on Partition.
Pull down under Partition Layout to 1 Partition.
Click on Options…
Select GUID Partition Table.
Name: Emergency Backup
Format: Select Mac OS Extended (journaled)
Click Apply. -
I made a bootable disc on an external hard drive, with Yosemite on it. I am running Snow Leopard on my iMac. How can I open the Yosemite disc from the desktop on my iMac? Does the external hard drive need to be connected to my iMac by firewire to do that?

Are you saying that Yos/10.10, as a volume located in a mounted external drive won't appear as an option in Snow Leopard's Startup Disc, in Sys Prefs? I've never heard this one before. AFAIK any mounted volume, regardless of OS, should appear there. I would think that, if it appears in the Boot Picker/Startup Manager it would also appear and could be booted to from Snow's Startup Disk. I can't test this myself, since I don't have Yos. Is what you are saying documented somewhere? -

I had outlook and am trying to find the emails that were backed up on the external hard drive. How can I find them?
thank you!If it is anything like Entourage was before it, it is in the Microsoft User Data folder in the Documents folder. Sadly with Entourage, there was a single Database file that managed contacts, e-mail and calendar in one file. This all your eggs in one basket approach led me to stop using Microsoft's solution. Hopefully Outlook was made less risky.

I hate to say it.. But I have never backed up!! I have thousands of pics of my son on this mac book, it got wet and NOW I'm backing up (as i type) to a Seagate external hard drive- I plugged it in, and then Time MAchine launched automatically. It looks like it's backing up my whole computer, is it backing up everything? photos, address book, documents etc? If my computer crashes tomorrow, how would I restore all of this information on a new computer?

To restore this in a new Mac, you have to use Migration Assistant. Just connect the Time Machine drive into the new computer, open Migration Assistant (it's in /Applications/Utilities) and follow the steps. You will be able to select what you want to transfer.
Also, if you have a brand-new Mac, you can do this during the initial setup. Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so connect the Time Machine disk and follow the steps -

On the Mac with the hard drive connected....click on the Time Machine "clock" icon at the top of the screen
Click Time Machine Preferences
Click Options
Here you will see a list of items that have been excluded from backups
Click the name of the hard drive to highlight it
Click the - (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the hard drive from the list of excluded items
The hard drive will now be backed up with your Mac on the next pass that Time Machine makes -

You can't write to it because it's formatted as NTFS which OS X will read but not write to. If you want to continue using the drive with both a PC and OS X you will need to download and install NTFS-3G so you can then write to it from your Mac. You can get NTFS-3G at:

If you want to use the drive exclusively with your Mac then move the data off it and reformat it in Disk Utility (Applications - Utilities - Disk Utilities) as Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) -
How do I share an external hard drive with 3 macs
On my gmac, I have an external hard drive that all my itunes music/videos are being saved to. I would like to give the other macs access to the itunes music but can not seem to network it. I have no problem logging on to any of the three computers and sharing/using folders from each mac but I can not get the other two computers to see my external hard drive. I tried using SharePoints but the issue seems to be that the external hard drive shows up at the "computer" level, whereas the networking shows up at the internal hard drive level. I've searched all over the boards but can't seem to find anything that helps me with this particular situation. I am using a SeaGate external hard drive that is formated as FAT32.
Highlight the Share in Sharepoints>Normal Shares tab. Look down & right for the Windows (SMB) sharing and change it Shared(+). Click Update Share, Share should now show a + under SMB & AFS. Click the Little Show File System Properties button, set users & group, Permission, etc.,Update Share.
