Seagate FreeAgent Desk 1TB causes windows crash and to go in a reboot loop

I bought this Seagate external USB HDD 1000Gb capacity and have been using this for a while. I was able to backup about 500gb of data. This external hdd was permanently hooked on to my computer which has win XP pro (4gb ram, 2.66Ghz CPU Pentium). I have used this only for backing up personal data ,photos and videos.
One day I got the dreaded  blue screen and rebooted my machine. The machine went on a reboot cycle. It used to show BIOS screen then windows logo and back to BIOS screen.
After that I unhooked my external HDD and the machine booted up clean. Now when I try to hook the external HDD and power it on, my windows crashes with the blue screen and shows the ntfs error.
How do i make it work. I have lots of data which I can't afford to lose.

Sounds like the drive has gone bad, not a common problem by any means. If the data is important, there are several data recovery options including Geek Squad. These options are not cheap though.

Itunes is on my desk top on windows 7 and I can not open it, I have just downloaded it again and hit repair to see if this helps as well but it still won't open

Okay, launch iTunes... does it work?
If so, in Edit > Preferences > Advanced is the option to "prevent syncing of iDevices" selected?
Another possibility, in Control Panel > Default Programs > Change Auto Play Settings > what is the system set to do when an iPhone is connected?

  • Seagate FreeAgent Desk (Mac) turns on when not in use?

    Hi,
I just bought a 1TB Seagate FreeAgent for mac. It is all working fine, I have partitioned it to use half for time machine and half as just an external hard drive. It turns on every hour to back up, and sleeps after that, but I find it turns on a couple more times in the hour when it is not backing up and the storage partition isn't in use either.
It's quiet so I don't mind when it turns on to back up, but it's a bit annoying when it comes on when it's not in use.
    Any ideas appreciated,
    Thanks.

    nwgjackson,
Welcome to the Forums! I think what you are seeing is one spotlight indexes regularly so that its easy for you to find things, and when the disk is plugged to your mac it periodically reads what is on the disk so that you can easily access it if you so wish.

  • MAX causes Windows crash

I installed LabView 7.1 and the additional programs which where shipped with the DAQPAD-6015 on two different computers, both running Windows XP Professional. On one computer everything works fine. On the other computer I have a big problem:
when I start MAX and expand the devices and interfaces it takes a few seconds and then I get a 'blue screen' the whole systems crashes and the computer reboots. This happens always in the same way, if the DAQPAD is connected or not. I tryed deinstalling LabView with all components and reinstalling eveything again with the same result.
Has anybody an idea why everything works fine on one computer and on the other one not?

In the meantime I updated Ni-488.2 from version 1.7 to version 2.3. This diden't help.
Then I updated NI-VISA from version 3.2 to version 3.3, and the problem is fixed since then.
Now everything works fine, there is no crash anymore in MAX and I am able to configure
    my Hardware.
There is only one question not answered: why does it work on one computer with NI-VISA 3.2
and on the other computer I needed to update NI-VISA to version 3.3 to avoid a computer
crash when I wanted to configure something in MAX?
Anyway it seems to be a good idea to update your software components to the latest versions
if something with the hardware doesen't work.

  • 754 Ultra MS-6561 Windows crash and now sometimes doesn't POST

Bought a new MSI motherboard and installed everything that's in my signature.  Everything is used except for the memory and the mobo.  The computer was running fine for a few weeks. No problems. Only recent installation is an old game: Independence War 2, where it would freeze or crash to desktop.  Didn't think much of it, as I hadn't patched it yet.  Then yesterday during lunch I tried to turn on the computer and got the following error before it got into windows:
    "While Initializing device IOS:
Windows protection error. Please restart your computer."
So I restart and the computer wouldn't POST. After a few tries, it POSTs but I got the following error:
"Invalid VxD dynamic link call to device 3, service B. Please run windows set-up to fix."
So I have to restart again, and it wouldn't POST. It's the same thing over and over, it would start up and hang before POST, the display doesn't even turn on. Waiting a while and trying again will result in it POSTING. I check the tempurature of the processor and it's a cool 43-50 degrees celsius, never going higher than 65 degrees celsius on a normal day.
It will let me into windows sometimes without errors, but it will crash and then won't POST for a while. One time I was able to get to the command prompt and while trying to see a directory, it froze and bunch of symbols were all over the screen. And then at restart it wouldnt POST. But if I let it sit, it will start up no problem. But it will crash after a while.
I get home from work yesterday and decide to do the following: run scandisk, update the BIOS to 1.7, update my video drivers, and reinstall Windows 98SE.
Mind you, the day before I could barely keep the computer on, let alone try to do anything on it. But when I turned it on last night, it seemed like it was back to normal. I was on it for like 2 hours doing everything to it. I ran the scan disk and it worked fine.
The bios update went without a hitch. When I reinstalled windows, I didn't format the harddrive and only installed it over the existing 98. Why? Because I have no idea how to format a harddrive and I don't have the Win 98 cd (my bro in law, when installing it the first time on my old 450, put all the CAB files and whatnot in a directory and I installed it through there).
I do everything else and leave my computer running for a little while. No problems. It seemed like it was running as new. I was even getting better resource management by 1% (no big deal I guess). I start up and shut down a few times to make sure I'm not crazy and it really did seem like it was normal again.
Then I shut down and go watch tv for a little while. I come back to it later, and BOOM. Same crap as before: Windows protection error, please restart. If not, it's the dynamic link VxD crap that tells me to run windows set-up.
It doesn't even let me into Windows thru safe mode. Going step-by-step start up, it seems to crash and shut down at loading windows GUI. Then it won't let me post for a while, like before.
I download memtest as I saw in one post here and as it's doing it's test I get the same thing I get when I'm in DOS:  Freezing and funny symbols on the screen.
D-Bracket, when it hangs either is at:  Full Red (processor info), or will jump from the memory test to the early chipset initialization, then back to the memory test lights.
I'm at my wits end.  Please help?

Thanks, Wonkanoby.  I had seen that already (one of the first things I did when I saw those errors was to go online from the work computer and look for what those errors meant in windows support).  When I was able to get into my computer, I used msconfig and saw that my system.ini was fine.
I haven't tested different ram yet, though.  Which one do you all suggest?  What I have is kingston, but it seems that some of the MSI boards don't like them.
And although it wasn't suggested, I changed the power supply as I saw that many of the problems on here were associated with it.  I got an Antec True 430.  Sure enough, it wasn't the problem :(  Still debating if I should keep it over my 330 watt (also Antec) or return it and get dinged with the 15% restocking fee.  I may be upgrading to a 2600 soon I may keep it.
I'll try the new memory this weekend.  Meanwhile, any other suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Reinstalling PSE 10 after Windows crash and saving old projects

    Hi!
My windows installation has crashed - no chance to get it alive again. I have an important not finished film project on 3 harddisks and diverse partitions (as it is recommended: Media, the raw captured video and so on). On C is only windows XP and the programm and its folder. The project itself and the prel file is on D with all the rest of the Data of the other programms. All Harddisks are ok.
When I reinstall Windows in the same way as  it was before, and on C also PSE again. And then click on the prel file. Will it work to continue then?
Will there be any loss? Will it work as before? What should I take care of?
Are all the informations of the project where the parts of the project is stored in the prel file? Are they / some  (also?) in the programm folder of PSE on C?
(As there are the 3 Harddrives and more partitions it could be that during the installation xp does not assign  the drive letters and partition letters absolutely the same way it was before though....)
Shall I after having reinstalled windows and PSE copy the old programm folder to C again? (After the installation the programm in the new proper XP is registered of course and would be looking the same exept of the installation dates.)
I could save and copy the old PSE folder in programms on C with a linux live CD and put it on D before reinstalling XP and erasing all that was on C before. (The rest will not be touched, as it is on the other partitions / drives).
Thanks for the answers and help!

Re: Barbara: What my main question is, is will Adobe provide me a replacement PSE7 product/download for my computer? I understand that a code wouldn't work that way.
And to answer another question, yeah. its the same computer, and I have sucessfully reinstalled one other product via disk and code.

  • MacBook Air dual system with Windows crashed, and Mac password forgotten

The MacBook Air of my friend encountered a few big problems.  Here is the story:
    1. There are two operating systems in it: Windows 7 and Mac OS 10.6.  She used Windows 7 exclusively (which is the reason for the 5th problem below).  This may already seem awkward from the start, but please don't blame her for this..
    2. Today somehow the Windows 7 cannot boot (the classical "blue screen" appeared), probably due to an error in the updating process.
    3. So now we have to log into the Mac OS to do some operation on the Windows system, either to back up the data, or to edit the Windows disk somehow to repair it.
    4. In order to do this, we need to install some third party tools in Mac OS (to have access to the NTFS file system; BTW, the Windows partition cannot be mounted by the "disk utility" tool due to some errors), and here is where another big problem comes about:
    5. She has forgotten the password of the Mac OS system (be assured: this MacBook Air is not a stolen one), so practically we cannot install any new software, or run tools that requires a high privilege!
    6. Well, by Googling I found that the password might be circumvented by using a recovery usb stick, by she cannot find out this usb stick...
    7. Some articles mentioned pressing "command + R" or "command + S" during booting to enter a command line environment (I am not sure about this), which had no effect at all in our case.
By now I have no solid idea how could such a situation be solved...  The possibilities I can think of are:
    a. Take the laptop to an Apple repair center.
    b. Try to make a recovery disk by myself, and use it to get rid of the password.
    c. Try to boot the computer with an external disk (somehow made), and then edit or backup the Windows partition.
I am not sure any of them will work.
    Any ideas will be appreciated!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
If your friend has got a Late 2010 MacBook Air, the Mac came with a USB drive that contains Mac OS X Snow Leopard, to reset passwords, reinstall Mac OS X...
If he/she has got an older MacBook Air, he/she has got DVDs instead, and you need an external optical drive or a PC to be able to reset the password. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2129?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US After starting with the DVD, open Utilities menu > Password Reset, and follow the steps
If he/she lost the USB drive or DVDs, call Apple to get replacement DVDs or another USB drive > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57

  • Windows crash and itunes reinstall. Please help

My windows crashed, so i had to reinstall itunes from scratch, without being able to keep a backup because i had to format my C: . However now if i sync my iphone i will lose everything. Is there any solution for me not to reinstall every single app from scratch?!
    Thank you in advance.

You can transfer itunes purchases from your iphone.  Without syncing:  File>Transfer Purchases
You should always maintain a backup on an external source for this very reason.

  • IOS7 update caused iTunes crash and left phone at loading screen.

I had originally attempted to update via the on phone option, but when that failed I went to itunes. All was going well ntil it came time to install the software on the phone. iTunes promptly crashed, and my phone is stuck on a black screen with the Apple logo and a progress bar. Any help would be appreciated.

Fcopertini, at my visit with the apple store somehow the guy took my phone and got it to enter in the "restore mode" and be recognized right away by using the method mentioned here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808... (I tried this like 5 times to no avail) not sure what he did.
But when I got home I still was unable to get my phone to be connected to my computer. I did a little bit more research and tried 3 more things, and was able to finally get my phone recognized and restored. (my iTunes was the newest version becuase I could not download iOS 7 without it)
    1. I stopped and restarted the Apple Mobile Device service. (I figured that after removing and installing itunes completely twice would do that already but who knows)
    2. I removed the Apple mobile device USB driver (found in device manager under Universal serial bus controlers) again and then connected my phone to the computer to allow it to find the driver for me. (I had already done that before but maybe in combination with restarting the service it helped)
    3. I removed my phone from the mophie case (it has a battery pack on it and makes the 30 pin connector to mini usb) Though I do not think this was the problem becuase I have connected it to my computer before multiple times and even after I did the restore I tried with the case on and it worked.
But all in all so I guess the firs two might have helped my computer see the phone again, and if that works then try following the links instructions about the recovery mode.
The guy at the apple store pretty much followed the instructions exaclty, except on #1, he just left the phone plugged into the computer and then tried the reset thing. It then recognized it was in recovery mode and hit restore for me.
I think I would have been able to do it if I had been able to get my computer to recognize my phone before hand. Sorry this is long but maybe it will help.

  • Is it true that current version of Mozilla Firefox including its updates can currently cause Windows 7 and/or Windows XP to crash?

I was advised in the first week of September 2013 by our IT contractor, that the current version of Mozilla FireFox (and its updates) is causing computers with Windows 7 to crash? (NB: specifically, we have Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1, 64bit). Is this still the case, and if not, do we need to upgrade to a newer version of Win7 (if one exists). Also, is there currently a problem with using Mozilla Firefox on a computer with Windows XP Home Edition, version 2002, service pack 3? NB: We have a server and our computers are on a network.
Thanks heaps, as would really like to change back to FireFox when possible.

That shouldn't be the case but most likely what I can think of is the graphics driver conflicting with Firefox. We can troubleshoot this issue if you'd like to.

  • Windows Crashed and No Option Left?

    Hi.
I bought a HP 2000-2202 TU laptop in Feb 2013.
In April 2014, When the warranty expired, the OS (Windows 8) crashed.
After contacting HP Customer care, they asked me to purchase a set of recovery disk.
I purchased and tried to install it.
    Installation failed.
Contacted HP Customer again and they said I need to visit Service Centre.
At service centre, they disgnosed and said that the hard disk has bad sectors.
I came and replaced my hard disk with the new one of same specifications as original (500 GB, SATA, 5400 RPM). Tried installing windows again with the recovery disk. It did not work. Again contacted customer care and they said to visit service centre. Service centre guys told me that recovery disk will work on the hard disk purchased from HP servcie centre only (Weird it sounded still, had no option but to trust them). I told them to install new hard disk from their centre only and install windows.
After 2-3 days they called me up and said that the recovery disk is damaged and hence the problems.
I asked them, if there was problem in Recovery Disk, why did they make me buy new hard disk? they said that the hard disk was also damaged (Again shocked, how come all my disks are damaged???). I told them to provide me with the new recovery disk, and they said that recovery disk can only be bought from HP customer care. Tried to contact HP Customer care and they said they can give recovery disk once again only if i buy new hard disk and re-install windows and then call them up to explain exact error. I tried to convince them that the laptop is not with me and it is at service centre. They wanted me to make service centre guy call them up but service centre guy is not ready to call them up. between these service centre and customer I have been suffering for last 2 months. No option left to me but to forget the laptop and buy new one. In literal sence they have robbed my laptop. I dont see any chance of help anywhere, so posting it here as my last attempt and hope.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

I apologize for the inconvinience caused to you.

  • Plugin-container.exe causes windows crash that causes Firefox to crash

Any help that can be given with this problem would be appreciated.
I'm running an older machine (Windows XP SP2). I was having a problem with Firefox 9.0 redirecting my search results to other sites. Scans with Norton and Malwarebytes showed no malware on the system. I upgraded afew months ago to Firefox 12.0 hoping that would fix the problem - thinking it was Malware and not bothering to check the support website here. That didn't fix the problem. So over the weekend I uninstalled Firefox 12.0 completely from the system - including my profile information. I did a clean install of Firefox 17.0. I think the redirect problem is fixed, but now I have a new problem - nearly every website I go to I get a windows error "Runtime Error. Virtual C++ Runtime library plugin-container.exe R6030 - CRT not initialized." This locks up Firefox and causes it to become unresponsive (so I can't get a Firefox crash report).

First try to update XP to Service Pack 3 and all other most recent updates. Then try again.

  • IPod causing mega crash (and its not the iPods fault)

Whenever I plug in an iPod to my new iMac, iTunes freezes. Usually it will take down the entire computer. The variations are, the iPod will not be visible or I will see the iPod and after two or three changes iTunes will lock up. Sometimes if I wait long enough, like five min or more, it will recover. However as soon as I try to do anything, it will lock up again.
iTunes functions normally without the iPods plugged in.
I have two different iPods that I am using, a nano and a shuffle. I have tested both on my iBook and they work great.
I have called tech support twice, once I was told to empty my cashes and the second time I was told to re-install iTunes. Neather solution worked and I was given a case number and told to call back when a guru was working. I have also repaired my permissions numerous times. I even re-installed the operating system.
What the heck is wrong with my computer?

This is the second major problem reported regarding iTunes crashing the new iMacs. A lot of people are reporting that iTunes crashes their new iMacs when attempting to browse the TV Shows page of the iTunes store. See this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1095847&tstart=0
My guess is that there is a conflict between iTunes and a device driver on the new iMacs, possibly in relation to the USB controller.
