Seagate GoFlex and ATV

I got a Seagate GoFlex and it uses UPnP to share my videos.  I noticed that in iTunes it's listed under share as GoFlex Home:iTunes.  Is it possilbe to use that to share to my Apple TV?

It has been several weeks and the answer was...turn off UPNP (Play and Play ports) in the GoFlex Preferences!!!

  • Installed mac installer.dmg Seagate GoFlex and drive and file names now in Chinese characters

I just installed the mac installer.dmg from Seagate on a second Mac so that I could use Seagate GoFlex drive with the computer, but now the drive shows up with its name and the file names in Chinese characters!  Connecting the drive to the original mac has the drive show up named properly but a few of the files show up in Chinese characters.  What gives?

I should add that these are the instructions I received from Seagate in answer to the same inquiry.  I have not yet gone to work to give them a try.
    Thank you for contacting Seagate.
I am sorry you are having problems with your Seagate drive. Let me help you resolved this language issue. I understand your drive verbiage is in Chinese. I would try reinstalling software, and then following the installation  process in this link below in order to correct this issue.

  • Chaining 2011 MBA to Seagate GoFlex Thunderbolt to DVI monitor

    Hello Chaps,
I'm currently using a macbook air with an adapter to connect my LG 24" LCD panel. What I am wondering is if I can take advantage of the thunderbolt port for my external drive using the Seagate dock (GoFlex Desk STAE127) then chain onwards using the Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi there.
I have just tried this now, and yes it does work :-)
Macbook Air - connect to Seagate GoFlex Thunderbolt (Using TB cable)
Seagate Goflex Thunderbolt passthrough to a Dell 24 Inch monitor (using Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter cable).
Both the Seagate GoFlex and the Dell 24 inch monitor work :-)

  • I upgraded my imac to OS Mountain Lion and now the Seagate Goflex external HDD is not recognised

I upgraded the iMac to Mountain Lion and it does not recognize the Seagate Goflex External HDD that I was working from earlier. I do not want to buy a special program since the Goflex HDD was working on both mac and Windows without any problems before the upgrade. The Goflex HDD is still working on my Macbook pro so there is no problem in the HDD. Is there something that needs to be activated... Please help

A bit more info for those of you reading this.... the problem seemed to be in iTunes. For each connected device , if I clicked on the Photo option I could no longer select the second radio button for limiting the photos by Events, Albums, etc.  It was an all or nothing deal. But selecting all would cause the error.
So I had read the other forum posts about the "&" symbol being the cause of the problem.  I went through iPhoto and made all of the changes. It did not work. I then looked at iTunes, using the AlbumData2.xml file listed in the other forums as a reference.  I found one album with the "&". I edited that one.  Still would not work.  So then I spent 3 hours on the phone with AppleCare last week. I talked with 4 different advisors. None of them had heard about the "&" error from the forums. We tried everything in iPhoto including repair and rebuild.  Finally we created a whole new library and reimported my master photos from my original one.  Using this option would allow me to now check off that radio button in iTunes.  BUT... I now lost all of my albums and events and would need to rebuid them.  I was not happy. They agreed and we set up time to talk this week.
So today I talked with AppleCare again. They now have more info and said the problem has to do with iTunes and the new iPhoto 9.4. It does not like the "&" symbol anywhere in either iPhoto or iTunes. So they now have me going through everything in my iTunes library. Genre is OK but any other item cannot have " & ". I have several dozen to edit and will do it over the weekend and then restore my original iPhoto Library and see if I can finally get it all to sync. I will let you know how I make out, but apparently you need to eliminate " & " from every entry in iTunes and iPhoto.
Quality control is not up to par with Apple these days.

  • I have recently bought a Seagate Goflex satellite mobile wireless hard drive. I have converted some of my AVI movies to mp4 and transferred them to the hard drive, but when I play them through my iPad 2 I can hear the sound but not see the movie. Help???

I have recently bought a Seagate Goflex satellite mobile wireless hardrive , i have converted some of my AVI movies to MP4 and loaded them onto the hard drive, when I try and play them through my I pad2 I can hear the sound of the movie but not see the film, somebody please help, what am I doing wrong as I have spent a lot of time converting these movies to be able to travel with my iPad and watch them. Thank you

Unfortunately, the drive is pretty much restricted without hacking it. That is, you can't stream its content via standardized protocols like UPnP, SMB, FTP and the like. This makes you won't be able to access its content from any third-party apps otherwise capable of playing back AVI files from UPnP / SMB / FTP / WebDAV etc. sources.
While this is certainly not a recommendation (I can in no way be held responsible if anything goes wrong): you may want to consider extending the capabilities of the drive by installing the hack: http://www.hackseagatesatellite.com/wordpress/welcome/
It'll "open" the drive for third-party, AVI-capable multimedia apps like GoodPlayer, It's Playing etc. to directly play the files over the network.

  • Problems with Mac and Seagate Goflex Freeagent

I have a Macbook pro and a Seagate Goflex freeagent external hard drive. The same hard drive is used on a pc as well. The problem is I ejected the ExHD from the mac book and plugged it in to the PC. I was able to use the ExHD, I save the info and went an safely removed hardware. When i went back to the Mac I get a message that says the device was ejected improperly and the Mac Osx will fix the problem, however It does not fix it. I can get it to reconigize the ExHD and I eject it and restart the Mac. I can access folders on the ExHD, but when I go to open a file I get the same error message. I had this problem once before. I got the Mac to eject the ExHD and I restarted and all was good. Any help is great. Thanks

The second part, that you say shows up twice is nothing to do with GoDaddy. It is to do with the name that you have given your site in iWeb. What did you call your iWeb site when you made it? Change it to something short. I called mine site, so it come up as site/Welcome.
For CNAME you need to delete the DNS settings that are there and then you may need to enter the info twice, once as @, CNAME and then web.mac.com and then www, CNAME and then web.mac.com and it should work. Some require you to enter the www, but for mine, I needed the @ and www.

  • Seagate GoFlex Thunderbolt Adaptor is very slow on new MBP

I have new mbp 13" md101 and Seagate GoFlex Thunderbolt Adaptor + seagate go flex 1TB, and speed is only 16mb/s tested with black magic and 13GB files copy. I did software update too, but the result is same, Whats wrong with this new MBP ?

Just in case someone else comes across this… The reason you're seeing slow speeds with a thunderbolt adapter is that you have formatted your disk with NTFS. Macintosh computers cannot recognize this format natively but you can use NTFS for Mac  (http://www.paragon-software.com) which will allow you to use the disc with both platforms. I did this and found no benefits whatsoever.  It is MUCH better to dedicate a USB 2 or USB 3 external drive for windows use only.  I formatted a 1.5 TB drive with NTFS then  installed the NTFS for Mac software.  The drive worked fine HOWEVER, when you do a search with the Mac  to find a file or something it cannot search the NTFS drive.  So basically, anything you place on the NTFS drive from your Macintosh you will be unable to find when searching.  That's a big deal!  The other limitation I found was using the drive on my new Seagate thunderbolt adapter.  Unless you're booted natively in to Windows on your Macintosh, Windows cannot see the drive.  Secondly and very important of course, it's very very slow.  It took forever to copy  the information I had stored on the drive  to other drives… Reformat and use the drive as a Mac external.  The data transfer is ridiculously slow and reformatting the drive from NTFS back to Mac OS extended journaled also took a very long time.
To summarize, formatting a drive with NTFS so that you can use it for both Windows and Mac sounds like a great idea but in reality it's not so great unless you're okay with slow speeds and the inability to search the drive with the Mac.

  • Why will iMac OS 10.6.8 intel core duo not write to SeaGate Goflex FreeAgent external hard drives? - when it used to!?

2 TB external hard drives (SeaGate GoFlex Free Agent) were formatted in NFTS to store movies over 4 GB so that I can transfer to PC's.  I downloaded camcorder movies in .mts files to this iMac and later transferred to my external hard drives.  I am now trying to transfer the quicktimemovie files that iMovie  made to the external hard drives and the iMac refuses to write ANYTHING to my EHD's.  But it used to just fine.  Now it says it can only read the EHD's?!  I really think the OS has been 10.6.8 all this time so why the sudden inability to write to my EHD's?
iMac has VMFusionware, perhaps it will write to EHD's when this is going?
I'm pretty sure I already have all the raw data (the .mts files) but I can't tell if they are the same as the quicktimemovie files.  So I think I can just trash the QTM files and remake them at some later date by uploading the .mts files to iMovie.  Is that right?
A friend was able to copy some of the QTM files to a thumb drive...

Spaced out and forgot to mention that these EHD's continue to work fine with a G5 PowerPC Mac maxed out at OS 10.5.8.  The G5 doesn't have a good iMovie so that's why I was using the iMac with OS 10.6.8.  The G5 writes to these EHD's no problem.
I'm wondering if the EHD's came with some software (I've googled around and Paragon sounds somewhat familiar) that I put on the Mac's that enable writing and I have forgotten about.
[edit] I remember there was some piece of paper talking about initial formatting of these 2 TB, USB 3.0 drives (STAC2000103).  I don't know where it is.  I have the box and it states "NTFS driver for Mac (R) pre-loaded on drive"...er, that means they should work with any Mac?...wait, do I have to seek it out and run it to get it to work?

  • Time Machine - Seagate GoFlex

    Hi
I have been using a Seagate GoFlex Home drive connected to my wireless router as my Time Machine backup drive.
It has stopped working and i get a message saying,
"The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features.
Open Time Machine preferences to select a different backup disk."
Is this because of Lion, or a different reason.
    Please help
    Ben

This seems to be related to the new Mac OS X upgrade, Lion.
I found the following post from Seagate in their Knowledge Base:
    http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?page=1&NewLang=en&D ocId=219971
I subscribed to the article in case there are any updates to this issue.

  • Why do newly created folders have random creation dates? This is on a Seagate GoFlex USB drive.

Why do newly created folders have random creation dates? This is on a Seagate GoFlex USB drive. Is there a fix? It appears to work fine in the internal drive.

So your hard drive is setup for a PC using NTFS and you have the NTFS-3G driver installed (I wonder which version of the driver). I know many users have reported problems with file transfer speeds being slower on a Mac, but this is understandable due to the 3rd party driver you have to use to access the drive.
There are other higher performance drivers available for a price, like Tuxera but their site shows they haven't updated their drivers since late in 2010. They do say that they are 64 bit drivers but they want about $37 for it. They maintain a support site that has quite a bit on info about NTFS-3G issues.
I assume you've got a freeware or open-source version of the driver from Seagate. It's probably OK for occasional use to access the NTFS drive, but not the way you want to use a drive all the time on MacOS.
Fat32 is compatible with both OS's, but there are some restrictions like not being able to use video files larger than 4GB (actually 1byte smaller than 4GB) and the 2TB partition size limit. Both HFS+ and NTFS have advantages due to the way the OS's can optimize transfer speeds and reliability, but a drive that's plugged into many machines is always going to have compromises until we get native support for NTFS (possible in the future because it's already been tested), or the Windows side supports HFS+ (probably not going to happen). There are programs/drivers on both sides that can accomplish this compatibility, but not native solutions at this time.
Using 3rd party drivers could mean problems with some drives that don't work well or completely break with a system update in the future. Apple doesn't seem to try to break compatibility features, but they do control the transfer protocols and optimize the OS for reliability. Flash drives are mostly formatted with Fat32 and they seem to work well for data transfer with just about any OS.
For me, I've chosen to use a NetGear ReadyNAS NV+  in an Xraid configuration for local storage and Time Machine support, and Dropbox for some files that I can easily transfer to Mac, PC, or Linux by just using a web browser, and I quit installing proprietary drivers to any computer, Mac or PC. I've also got a couple of the USB Fat32 laptop drives (250 to 320 GB) laying around for large file transfers if needed.
Sorry, I got a long way from your original Folder Creation Date issue.

  • Get a Samsung HDTV and ATV or wait for the latest model?

A newbie to HDTV, video and ATV.
I have almost decided to buy the Samsung 50" plasma HDTV PN50A650. But have discovered that Samsung has a new model PN50A760 with added capabilities for playing video and wireless networking.
Connectivity is an issue to me. Spending all the green on a HDTV, I do not want it to be obsolete in 4 years. What if I get a digital camcorder? Or Apple introduces a flat-rate movie-rental scheme? My options:
OPTION A) Wait a few months until the $500 premium for the new model drops.
Some excerpts for reviews of the latest 760 model:
"The 7 series can playback video content stored on a USB device while the 6 series are limited to images and audio."
(Naively, I thought that all HDTVs should be able to play back video.)
"The 7 Series can stream audio, video and pictures over your home network."
"The TV recognizes not only MP3 and JPEG files but also XviD and MPEG4 files to enjoy video playback."
"The TV can also reach out to your home network and play back photos, videos and music stored on networked computers. You'll need to install special software, included with the TV, onto your PC." This could be some very basic software. Suitable for Macs?
"While this feature seems pretty cool, it's not as good as similar functionality built into a PS3 or an Xbox 360, let alone that of a dedicated network media streamer like Apple TV. Despite being billed as DLNA-compliant, the TV won't play nice with DLNA server software like Windows Media Player 11 or TVersity, so you're stuck with the included proprietary software. Samsung's software is basic..." (Compatibility with Macs?)
OPTION B) Buy the older model and then, add ATV. The total cost will be less and I think, the video playback (through my iMac?) and networking capabilities (2Wire Wi-Fi) will be much better. But I see there have been problems between ATV and Samsung HDTV.
Isn't the combo with ATV a much more capable and flexible (and cheaper) long-term solution? Which Samsung is unlikely to match?
Thanks for your valuable advice! (Urgent for the X-Mas season!)

Winston, I think you're missing my points:
    1) If you're interested in a device for watching HD video, then you can compare the AppleTV and Blu-Ray. You then have to look at what other features they provide, or don't provide as the case may be, and decide. I was just giving my opinion on an alternative.
    2) There was no detailed information given as to what the streaming capabilities were and so I was giving my opinion again.
To say that there is little difference quality wise between current HD broadcasts (even if some are 1440x1080i) and the maximum output of the AppleTV at 1280x720 shows a total lack of experience on your part of watching HD broadcasts on a TV capable of 1920x1080, or a lack of appreciation of the better detail contained in the picture. It's like comparing AppleTV HD at 1280x720 with DVD PAL native resolution of 720x576 and saying there is little difference quality wise. But then if you look at the US market where 30fps is standard, the AppleTV cannot support resolutions higher than 960x540, and then you really are lowering the benefits of the AppleTV over DVD quality, and the difference between the AppleTV and HD broadcasts is even bigger.
I have compared video from HD broadcast at 1920x1080 with the same video converted down to 1280x720 on the AppleTV, and the loss of detail is noticeable, especially when watching on a 40" TV, not an uncommon size these days with them being used with games consoles. Before you comment, no it is nothing to do with how I convert them, there is just physically far fewer pixels available. I much prefer watching 1920x1080 through my Media PC than watching 1280x720 through my AppleTV.
Also, as we all know it happens, there is software available freely on the internet - no names will be mentioned - that allow the convertion of movies from DVD to a PC, and likewise from HD-DVD and Blu-Ray to a PC. So reality is that it's available now and with the cost of 1TB and 1.5TB HDDs so cheap, the potential for a 1920x1080 resolution video collection for playing on a 1920x1080 TV is already there. Saying it's not going to happen 'any time soon' is rediculous as it's already happening, albeit quietly, especially as talk of how to do such things is not allowed on this forum.
You keep using this phrase 'any time soon' without quantifying it. You use words like 'unlikely'. We live in a fast changing world. The world of televisions has changed dramatically in the last two years, whereby nearly all mid-priced TVs (both plasma and lcd) from about £800 GBP upwards now support native 1920x1080. Two years ago I paid over £1500 GBP for a 37" plasma supporting native 1024x720. You can now buy Sony OLED 11" TVs, which a couple of years ago were just being shown off as prototypes. In my opinion, OLED will blow away lcd and plasma tv sales within 5 years, and in my timescale, that is any time soon.
12 months ago I bought a blu-ray player for a PC, whilst people around me were going for hd-dvd. The format wars was predicted as not going to end 'any time soon' and no one could have forseen that within 6 months the whole blu-ray / hd-dvd argument would be over.
For your information, ABC in the US have been broadcasting in HD for over 10 years.
But as I keep saying Winston, these are my opinions. You're allowed yours and I'm allowed mine.

  • I lose my internet connection when i sync iTunes and ATV. Please help

Ive just bought a new Apple TV and I am trying to stream TV shows and movies from my iMac via the wireless network.
The ATV found the right network instantly and I wrote in the password. Ive paired the iMac iTunes and ATV and I can see all the episodes and movies on my TV.
When I want to start to watch any of it, it loses its connection to the router/network. And so does the iMac. I havent had any trouble with the iMacs connection to the network until now. If Im not trying to watch anything on my TV, the internet is fine on both the ATV and iTunes.
Does anyone have any experience with this?
Ive tried to fix the DHCP in my router settings, but im not even sure what that means, let alone if it helps When i lose the internet, I can still see the network name, but when I try to connect, it says that connection timeout.
    I have a D-Link DI 524 router.
    Thanks so much
    Lisa
EDIT: If I exit iTunes my internet connection is fine. As soon as I start it and iTunes starts to sync with ATV, I lose the internet. Anyone know why and how I can fix it?
I forgot to add that WAN settings in my router says that I have Dynamic IP Address.
    Thanks

Okay.. When i stop the syncing between the ATV and itunes, I can watch a movie/TV-show for about 30 seconds, then the network will timeout.
So i know the atv is working. I have a feeling its the router that is too old? I will try to upgrade its firmware tomorrow, as i was told i couldnt to this when connected to wireless?
