Seagate Momentus HD fitted to new 2011 MBP 2.7 as standard

Was about to change the 500 GB HD in new MBP for a 7500 500 GB one when I saw it was a Momentus 500 GB but 5400 - so left it as it was as I guess this Momentus HD flies fast anyway.  But isn't latest Momentus HD rated at 7500 speed  - Momentus XT drives  - what gives here would have expected Apple to have fitted the most recent Momentus drive in their latest MBP ??    Still start up time of 33 secs and shutdown 3 secs is very fast due to SSD component in the Momentus.   How would the 7500 regular 500 GB drive compare bearing in mind this is a 5400 speed drive but with SSDS portion ?

I've put an XT in my MBP, and if you don't read the label, it looks exactly like any conventional drive. In my own mostly light usage, it's noticeably but not spectacularly faster than my original 250GB 5400RPM drive. If I'd known when I bought it what I know now, I wouldn't have bothered spending the extra $20-25 to get the XT. Besides not being worth the money for the limited benefit it gives me, it's on pace to have used up its Seagate-specified lifetime load-cycle allotment of 600,000 in barely more than 14 months — an extremely short lifespan for a hard drive. Seagate is willing to exchange it for a new one, but I'm going to wait until it gets closer to the threshold before sending it back, in hopes that a substantially better revision will be available by then.

  • New 2011 MBP 13" doesn't want to boot from USB

Just got brand new 2011 MBP 13" and tried first boot from the external bootable clone of up to date system volume from my older MBP - no go at all. It allows me to select the external USB volume to boot from but then it stays on the gray screen with Apple logo doing nothing.
Old MBP boots from the same external USB with no problem, boots as well from the clone of my iMac without chocking. But nothing happens with new 2011 MBP 13".
Both external volumes mount and show as start-up disks, but no matter which way I try to boot new 2011 MBP from any of them it just doesn't work.
    Any help?

What you mean by "too old"?
They don't have the needed drivers, which are only present on the new MacBook Pro models. A Mac OS X version which shipped with a Mac counts as newer than a copy with the same version number that was attained through usage of the downloadable updaters.

  • Will this fit on a 2011 MBP 13inch ?

500GB 2.5" Western Digital 'Scorpio BLACK' 7200RPM SATA 9.5mm Notebook HD 16MB Cache.
Is it possible to replace the stock hard drive with this hard drive in a MBP 13inch.

I originally purchased a WD Scorpio Black 7200750GB (WD7500BPKT) and the vibrations were very noticeable. I had to exchange it for a Hitachi. I can't stress how noticeable the vibration of this drive were as ompare to the original stock 5400 RPM drive.
I ended up with a Hitachi 7k500 7200RPM 500GB (HD20500 IDK/7K) drive and have been very happy with it so far. Vibration is consistent with the original stock 5400 RPM drive (which is virtually non-existent) and the speed increase was very noticeable. Battery-life does not appear to be affected.
Another contender was the Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid 7300RPM 75-GB, which I would have tried next if I wasn't satisfied with the Hitachi.

  • Headphone jack on new 2011 MBP 17" - no mic????

I just switched from a 2009 13" MBP to a 2011 17" MBP. My headset worked fine in the headphone jack of the 13", i.e. the mic worked too. Plugging the same headset into the 17" gives me no input audio. Is this jack input only? If so, how do i use a headset with this thing? I read that the line-in doesnt work with mics.

Apparently you have a headset with a 4-conductor mini plug?
Looking at the specs and the photos, the 17" MacBook Pro still has a separate audio in jack and audio out (3-conductor stereo) 'headphone' jack, unlike the integrated headphone-mic jack (4 conductors on the plug) on the 13" Mid-2009 MacBook Pro, (also used on iPhone and iPod Touch models, among others).

  • Color on new 2011 mbp 13"

Anyone tryed to make this marriage?
    Is it a workable twin?
I know apple declare that integrated video card is unsupported, but i must buy my new laptop and due to overweight photographic gear and airport checkin restriction i need the lighter mac that can handle fullhd dslr footage on fc3.

i need the lighter mac that can handle fullhd dslr footage on fc3.
You are buying yourself a boatload of trouble, as COLOR is not compatible with HDSLR codecs (H264 Long-GOP -- the notion of "fullhd" is laughable), so you will be required to recompress to a ProRes i-frame codec, which will lead to another list of requirements. Apple COLOR was not developed to be a laptop application. You will not hear a lot of "experience" from other users with this configuration because that list is probably fewer than a handful of brave and obstinate individuals who have gone to extreme lengths to defy common sense. Probably expended more time and energy getting the "cheap" solution to work than its worth. Sounds harsh, but its the reality.
The notion of outbuilding a monitor as a desktop resolution extension is a diminishing return. You really want to pack around a great, honking monitor when you have already stated you need the "light" laptop? The other issue is that COLOR will want to run in "two screen" mode. Then one screen will be the user interface and the other will be your "preview scope/monitor" interface? Which will it be? The one that's too small and you won't be able to read the text on the control buttons, or the one that's just wrong to use as a judgement display?

  • Is the new 2011 MBP Hi Res Anti Glare screen actually LED

Last time around, my friend bought an antiglare hi res MBP but found that when he received it, it did not have LED tech... it was LCD like the old models. After speaking with Apple they told him that what true and allowed him to exchange for gloss since the site did not say this anywhere.
Is the current MBP the same way or has Apple sorted out how to make the high rez display both anti glare AND LED?

You're absolutely right. I bought a 2010 15" hi-res anti-glare MacBook Pro and found the panel to be significantly darker than that of the regular 1440x900 screens. So what I did was return the laptop and purchased a 13" MBA. After comprehensive testing, I've concluded the 2010 13" and 11" MBAs to be the brightest (led backlight-wise) of all Apple laptops. Unfortunately, not so much contrast as the MBAs have worse viewing angles than the Pros.
It's hard time information like this elsewhere, but for all else looking for a Mac with the brightest screens here's a list:
    2010 MacBook Air > 13" MBP > 15" & 17" MBP > 15" MBP Hi-Res > 15" MBP Hi-Res Anti-Glare > 13" MB
I'm still waiting until Apple unifies all 15" to Hi-Res next year (hopefully) before making the jump.

  • HT201250 If I install a new SSD, there is no recovery partition (Command-R at startup), will TM be able to format and install the OS on my 2011 MBP?

I have a new 2011 MBP that's still pretty clean application and data wise.  I have a new Vertex 4 SSD (256GB) to install and want to know whether I need to have that formatted before I install it or will I be able to use a Time Machine backup to perform the format and restore of the Lion OS X and applications?  Will I have to get an external SSD enclosure to format the SSD before I install it?  Despite the many threads...I am still a little confused as to the exact procedure to use.  Most of the threads say use the recovery partition (well if the SSD is new, not formatted) where does this recovery partion reside?  Please use the KISS principle when responding...

The only negative to not having the original drive will be the work needed to reinstall all the apps and reconfigure to your liking. You will also have to decide whether to stay on Lion (which you should update to 10.7.4, BTW) or bite the bullet and take a leap of faith on Mountain Lion.
In either case, to simplify matters you would do well to concoct a Lion or ML bootable installer on a USB stick. In either case, you need to get the corresponding installer downloaded onto the hard drive and, instead of running it to execute the install, extract the coveted InstallESD.dmg image from which you construct the bootable installer. See here for details: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17782820#17782820  The procedure applies the same to both of the latest cat flavors.

  • Can't install Win7 on 2011 MBP

    Hi All,
I have a new 2011 MBP 15 i7 with the Apple SSD and I'm trying to installing Windows 7 (64 bit Ultimate) via Boot Camp. I also tried the 32 bit version, with the same results...
I used Boot Camp Assistant to make a 60GB partition, and got pretty far along in the Windows installation. Windows started, but then immediately rebooted, and then just kept rebooting. I never got as far as installing the drivers. Anyone seen this?
Of course I did a software update first, and read the installation instructions for BootCamp.
    In case it's relevant:
    Boot ROM Version: MBP81.0047.B04
    SMC Version (system): 1.69f1
    Thanks in advance!

Windows 7 came out in 2009.
The MacBook Air has support files
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4407
Windows 7 SP1 DVDs would be nice and more likely to support more hardware natively.
I can see Apple dropping XP, why create, test new drivers for new hardware.
Windows on Mac takes back seat to the consumer-entertainment side of business, and to OS X.
The 2011 MBP are so new that they were not it appears part of the standard 10.6.7 release cycle. Not the first time (10.4.9 fell on release of Mac Pro 2007 8-core) and had to wait for 10.4.10 to get everyone on the same build and test cycle. A perfect storm is new hardware, new OS, and everything incompatible on multiple fronts.
"Save drivers to CD" on 2011 MBP would be essential. The drivers HAVE to be on flash drive or something DURING the boot and install of Windows 7. Only way it would work.
Now, it seems that some people are successful getting Win7 on new MBP so something seems different. No idea what.
The most current FAQ on Boot Camp (from that link above)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3777
I will hand it to Apple Support pages, they could always of course be and do better and have help articles (vote on? most accessed? newest vs oldest? by category?) I'd even though in some under yours that are particular to installing Windows -

  • 2011 MBP MC700 13" cann't install win7 from  an external usb CD/DVD ROM

    My new 2011 MBP MC700 13" cann't install win7 from an external usb CD/DVD ROM,WHY?

Yes, very annoying. Not unworkable though. We've a bucket load of different external devices too, tried all of them.
It's not common to one OS either - can't boot OSX DVD, Ubuntu, Win7.... Only way I can is via the internal SuperDrive when it's actually internal.
Even tried it with just 1 x Hard Disk & an External USB. No joy.
Obviously not annoying enough for me to try and find a solution I just work around it now. Interesting it's been the same on my last three MBPs though - no problem on both the Air's I've owned.

    1) I saw a reference to updating the SSD firmware. How do I do this?
    2) I don't see the Boot Camp icon anywhere in OSX. It's not on the tray.
    3) The Boot Camp Assistant is version 3.0. Is the version of this the same as the Boot Camp? If not, then how do I figure out what version of Boot Camp I have? I know I need 3.1 or later but I assume that's what was on the 10.6.6 CD

The problem was the OEM Win7. A retail version installed fine.
Wierd I was successful installing Windows 7 (64-bit) with a System Builders Disc. Could it be that Apple has now a way to determine the if the user is installing from a System Builder or retail disc?
OEM does not necessarily = System Builder.
OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer. Windows PCs often come with Windows pre-installed. These pre-installed Windows OEM disks typically are configured to only be installed on the original PC. So these OEM disks won't install on any other PC or hardware.
System Builder Disks, often also called OEM are available from many retail or online stores. These System Builder disks can be installed on any new PC once. They can not be installed on other than a newly built system. Since your installation was on a new (new Boot Camp partition) PC then the System Builder version installed without problem. The System Builder version is not crippled to work only on a specific hardware like the OEM version I described above.

I completely understand the concept of OEM vs System Builder discs of Windows 7 ( I have a 64bit copy of Windows 7 System Builder), but is not rare that other users label a System Bulder disc as an OEM disc.
It is not "rare" that System Builder disks are labeled OEM. If you are a builder of computers, you are a System Builder or the Original Equipment Manufacturer of newly assembled computers. So you could install Windows from a OEM System Builder disk. As a new installer of Windows on a new Boot Camp partition you are doing something similar to building a new system. To the install disk it knows that Windows has not been installed previously so it will install from the OEM System Builder disk.
The OEM System Builder version also has licensing limitations. It can only be installed on one computer. But the System Builder version is a complete install disk similar to the retail version. The OEM version used by manufacturers such as Dell or HP are not full versions of Windows. These versions only contain the drivers required by the manufacturer's hardware.

  • AMD Radeon HD 6750M in 2011 MBP-Graphics Issues-Second Life

Since there were no responses to my question, I have re-worded it.  Second Life runs fine on my late 2009 iMac i7 with it's ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics card. SL freezes at boot up on my new 2011 MBP with it's more powerful graphics card.  Message is that "Your system contains a graphics card that is unknown at this time.  This is often the case with hardware we haven't had a chance to test.  Second Life will most likely run properly but you may need to adjust  your graphics settings to something more appropriate..."  Nope...I have to Option Command, Esc to force quit.  Feedback on this minor issue appreciated.

  • How is Windows 7 running on 2011 MBP?

    Hello,
I found myself in need of a Windows machine, but very wary of putting Windows on my shiny new 2011 MBP. A couple of years ago, I put Vista on my 2007 17" MBP and it really messed it up. My MBP was extremely hot all the times, and cost my a bundle to get it fixed by Apple Store.
How was your experience? If you run Windows 7 via bootcamp, can you share what you found? If there is any issues, I'd rather buy another laptop than messing up my MBP.
    Thanks in advance for help.

So far, I've no problems running Windows 7 x64 through bootcamp.  It does get a tad warmer when in use, and I use Windows everyday for school for about 2-4 hours.  I do notice slightly warmer than normal everyday temps when loading new software or doing software updates, but I keep it on a flat surface and very well ventilated.  I'm extremely happy with the performance of the 2011 MBP.  Good luck!

  • 2011 MBP 17" 2.3 GHz - High pitch hissing sound from left speaker

When I transfer large amounts of data (wifi and ethernet) I get a high pitch hissing sound from the left speaker. When the transfer is done, the hissing stops.
Is anyone else experiencing this and is there anything I can do to stop it?
When it occurred: I was transferring data from my old MBP to my new 2011 MBP first via WiFi, then by Ethernet (much faster . My old (2007) MBP had not hissing what so ever, by my new MBP was rather loud. I'm very happy it's only when using the network.

I get this sound every time I download, WiFi or Ethernet it dosen't matter the sound is the same. I can't guarantee that it's from the speaker, I have an old Netgear switch that sounds the same when I use it (just to clarify: I'm not using that switch anymore or ever have with this MBP)
So it could be some electrical sound (I'm not a hardware engineer) just a guess.

If you need to extract the drive's content you can remove it and install it in a $10 USB enclosure. It will be readable by any recent Mac.
