Seagate Portable Hard Drive - Documents Not Opening?

Hi guys!
I am using a new Seagate GoFlex Portable HD (500GB) and up until 5 minutes ago, no problems were to be had! NOW whenever I try to open ANY old Office For Mac 2010 file, I'm told I can't (for a variety of reasons)!
The funny thing is that when I drag them from the portable HD to the Desktop, they open with no problem. In addition, I can open new documents from the Seagate portable HD with no fuss. I have removed Office For Mac 2010 and reinstalled it, cleaned up the drive, etc, etc BUT the problem still remains.
Help, please

  • Windows 7 did not recognize my Seagate Portable Hard Drive

    Hello,
On my Toshiba laptop, Windows Vista recognizes easily my Seagate Portable Hard Drive STBU1000102. But my HP Laptop (with Windows 7) cannot recognize my Seagate External Hard Drive. Normaly the model STBU1000102 should work on Mac and PC. I went on Computer
Management of windows. On vista, the disk appears correctly but on windows 7 (Universal Serial Bus controllers), the icon of USB appears with a yellow mark. When I tried to install it on windows 7, the driver is found but I received the message "Access
    is denied".
    Could you help me ?

    Hello,
I thank you for your help. But up to now the problem is not solved.
I forgot to add that I have in Device Manager the following message :
The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
I made a search on the Internet about the message "Code 28". I tried the tests proposed. No solution.
But I learnt that one of the cause of "code 28" is a wrong driver.
Then I doubt now about my understanding of this message of Seagate about the device :
This software allows you to mount the NTFS partition on a GoFlex drive as read and write (NTFS would normally be read only in MacOS), so the drive can be used to drag and drop files
between a computer running MacOS and one running Windows. This image file includes an uninstall file that was not included with some early drives.
    And even Amazon writes :
Install the pre-loaded NTFS driver for Mac and use the drive interchangeably between PC and Mac computers without reformatting
Does that mean that the driver of this device has to be installed on MAC OS ?

My external hard drive will not open and only shows up in Disk Utilities. When I try yo repair it, it give me and error of invalid sibling link. How do I fix my external hard drive?

Invalid sibling link may not be fixable by Disk Utility. (Disk Utility is very conservative, and will not attempt repairs that might cause you to lose data.)
It is an indication of serious Directory damage.
    that leaves
    a) third-party Utilities that will take those risks, or
    b) re-initializing the drive (which deletes all your data) and restoring from another backup source.
    c) "Copying off whatever files you can salvage" has gone by, and you cannot copy anything off a drive that will not mount. You may be able to use "rescue" programs such as prosoft engineering Data Rescue to copy files to another drive, but that sounds a lot better than its reality. You may get many files, but not get ANY filenames.

  • Why is my Seagate portable hard drive not connecting with my LG TV?

Can someone please help me figure out my problem. I recently purchased a Seagate Expansion Portable Hard Drive 2T, 3.0 USB compatible. As I own a MacBook Pro, I formatted it to fit my Mac instead of windows. I have finished downloading all my movies on to it and have connected it into my LG TV usb port but nothing happened. The little green light was on my hard drive indicating it was on and not a broken drive and the TV came up with a prompt saying 'USB Loading.." than immediately after it came up with "Problem on the USB Device. Please check USB". Yes I know the problem is that its formatted to Mac and there for the TV cannot read it. But I don't want to format it to windows for my MacBook doesn't read/write it, (If anyone can help me change that, that would be great!), (as I have another hard drive and it doesn't let me drag movies onto or out of it and only lets me see them,) and the hard drive will be rather useless, Plus I'm using Time Machine and I want to keep a BACK UP of my Mac on a partition of my hard drive (Which I have already done).
    Please & Thank You,
    Jaycee

    Templeton Peck:
Well yes I know the problem to why it won't connect to my TV (the hard drive is Mac formatted) but I'm hoping someone would have a SOLUTION to the fact that I want it to stay in Mac format AND also somehow work with my tv (If thats even possible?..probably not) OR I can maybe change the format back AND hopefully can get it compatible with my Mac (Can that even be done too? Maybe download some prgram?) so I can still copy/past stuff off of it ---> Which by the way, I'm hopping also someone might have that solution too (Which I stated mildly up the top).
Also, I posted this up for the reason of which I would expect the people who read these know a little something about Mac/Apple Products (not necessarily about Mac formating but anything else really), So this question is technically about my MacBook for which my hard drive is MAC FORMATTED and that maybe theres a way for my MacBook to copy/past from my old hard drive which ISN'T Mac formatted (In saying that, I can just reformat my new one back IF there is a way for me to still copy/paste stuff off of it onto my MacBook).
So yea, I think this does has something to do with my Mac.

  • Can I back-up files to a portable hard drive and not use Time Machine?

I have a portable hard drive that I use for all of my Time Machine back-ups. I back-up the entire system every two or three weeks. I use the Time Machine software and it works quite well. I'm interested in backing up specific files (photos, documents, etc.) to a second portable drive every six months but I don't want to use the Time Machine software. Is there a simple way to hook up the portable drive (brand new Lacie 500 gb drive), open up the file on my desktop and drag the files to the new drive? Are there special steps I need to perform to avoid formatting the drive for Time Machine? Any tips will be greatly appreciated.

You can do that, but you'll have to erase the drive, or delete the previous versions, each time. You might want to look at CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper. They're most often used to make full bootable "clones" of your internal HD, but can be set to back up specific files and folders as well. CCC is donationware, so you can try it for a while before sending them some $$ so they can keep it up to date. SD has a free version, but I think you'll need the paid one (about $30, I think) to do this.

It would be best to format it for Macs, which is the same as Time Machine. What is the problem with that?

  • Portable Hard Drive will not show up in Disk Utility

I purchased a Toshiba Canvio Slim 500 GB hard drive a few months ago before I updated my computer to Mac OSX Version 10.6.8. I was running out of Hard Drive Space since I bought my computer in 2009 and decided to use a portable hard drive to store some of my personal information. I was able to read and successfully transfer data to the hard drive, but then I updated my computer to 10.6.8 and now I can't access it at all. It won't even show up in Disk Utility. I read on a few forums that some people were having the same problem as I was and they bought a y-cable adapter to power the hard drive through two usb cables. I bought one and tried it out and I'm still not having any luck. I tried using my girlfriend's computer to see if I can access it from her computer and it shows up in disk utility, but I can't access it. The lights turn on and I can hear it working like it worked the first day I used it, but nothing is happening. Please help me fix the problem.

Evidence, as scant as it is from Disk Utility, suggests the Toshiba external
HDD is indeed without Partion Map Scheme, has no files on it, unformatted.
So I wonder if there isn't a wire or defective circuit inside the box (enclosure)
that may be hiding access to the actual HDD unit inside there. Those kinds
of enclosures generally use a laptop 2.5" HDD since they can run on USB
power from the port. Matching up the internal HDD from that case, with an
other one with correct life support (connections) is a way to test it.
However if the Toshiba HD is a 3.5" standard drive, a larger enclosure, or
an adapter that simply plugs into the connections of the bare hard drive,
would be a way to access that external drive. These 'drive adapters' can
work with both SATA and IDE hard drives; or just one of the two. They
run in the range of $40 or so, and essentially are a wire kit with a power
adapter to spin the drive, but some do not even have the adapter, so as
to still use USB power for smaller drives of slower disc RPM speed.
Most competent computer stores with a skilled staff would know of these.
However some of the smaller HDD enclosures may be hard to open up.
And if there were a Toshiba warranty, this action could void the same.
Adapters would be to 'test the idea of recovering any data,' if enclosure
the drive shipped in has somehow developed a defect. Though it may
be if there is a defect, it may have existed at a point in time to affect
the actual save-to-disk process. Or later. A wire could be not allowing
information to be received, if broken or circuit damages, by the Mac.
But by the look of the Disk Utility's partition map, along with the other
earlier image that shows the same info in the bottom of the image of
the status, in Disk Description, this does not bode well for recovery.
I'm not sure what else to suggest. When the dust settles, Toshiba may
have a residual warranty that could only replace that one with another.
Some older mailorder catalogs show these kinds of adapters, some use
USB port power, others also include an AC adapter so standard faster
HDDs can be used without an enclosure. This also helps if one wants
temporary access to a hard disk drive, but does not want to install it.
•USB drive cable adapter kit SATA and IDE HDD - google results:
    https://www.google.com/#q=USB+drive+cable+adapter+kit+SATA+and+IDE+HDD
Companies also make hot-swap docks to allow fast swapping of HDDs
of either or both 2.5" and 3.5" size, these have their own adapter and
one simply puts drives inside from the top, like a bread toaster.
Hopefully you can take the Toshiba along to a computer store and ask
a somewhat skilled person there about getting the cable adapter kit or
another enclosure. The cable adapter would cost less & be quicker, yet
that would still involve opening up the failed HDD's enclosure for access.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • External hard drive documents not read on a MacBook Pro

    Hi all,
I use my external hard drive to save a document from another  PC computer last week when I plugged it  back on my Mac the documents cannot be  read on a Mac as it says they are not supports by apps software or search for application that will open those files.
I have all the documents which I copy from my previous Toshiba Laptop which was windows7 but is there way to clean the external drive on Mac without loosing all the document? or how do I format my external hard disk on MacBook Pro?
    Jok2

You can copy these documents to the internal drive of your MacBook Pro and then, format the external drive. If you want to use the external drive on Macs and PCs, I recommend you to format your external drive on a PC to use exFAT, better than NTFS or FAT32. You can also use FAT32 but it isn't compatible with files bigger than 4 GB, and NTFS disks can't be written on Macs. If you want to use this external drive only with your Mac, you can use Disk Utility to format the external drive using "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". Read > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html
Depending on the application you used to create the documents on the PC, you have to install an application that reads these documents. For example, if you created these documents with Office, you can use Office for Mac, iWork or LibreOffice. Each one has got its advantages and disadvantages

  • Recovered illustrator file from a hard drive will not open

    Hi,
I just recovered  some illustrator CS2/CS3 files that were accidently deleted from a hard  drive using Recuva version 1.39.509.  The files were detected as being  in excellent shape and they are recognized as illustrator files in  windows.  But I can not open them!
Please help!  These are months of work that could be lost!
Dear Jacob - I dont know why the previous discussion disappeared.  I have tried all your suggestions, including following the instructions for recovering illustrator files... None of them worked!  I am at a loss!  Again, every single one of the recoverd illustrator files can not be read, are supposedly 100% healthy from the softwared used to recover them, but they do not open!  Other files such as word adn images were recovered successfully - I dont understand what is missing here!

    TG,
As you can see on the pages mentioned in post #3, you can open the AI files as text files, and then you can see and compare the lines of code building each file.
The first part of each file is the wrapping defining the structure, folllowed by the part defining the artwork. Some of the artwork part may be corrupted, but more likely the structure part at the beginning is (it may be as little part snipped off at the very start).
So you can copy (at least some of) the part of code defining the artwork from the corrupted file and insert into the sound file after the initial part.
You may compare the two files and try to work out which part to move and where, using the file parts shown on those Adobe pages as guides.
I hope this was not too woolly.

  • I can't restore my bookmarks from portable hard drive, why not?

I backed up my bookmarks through "import and Backup" yesterday as my hard drive had a failure and was being replaced. I now have a new hard drive installed and am trying to restore the bookmarks from my portable drive, but I get "unable to process the backup file". It is a JSON file, bookmarks-2015-02-08.json. Have I now lost every single one of my bookmarks by trying to use the backup procedure? I no longer have access to the failed drive.

Hi, I did try that unsuccessfully, but was able to get them restored by following the link from a previous ask (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/927611). Thanks for the reply.

  • Portable External Hard-drive is not recognised on Macbook Pro after latest update

Recently my Seagate Portable hard-drive is no longer recognised in Finder, disk utility or the system profile. It no longer sufficiently powers the device as no light appears but the external hard-drive does make a noise. The device still works with other macs.
So far I have tried turning it off and on and have consulted my local apple store with no luck.

Do other peripherals work when connected to the MBP?

  • New Imac, has problem using previous portable hard drive

Been using a Seagate portable hard drive on various apple computers for 3 years. had a new one for school this year, and went to use it on our new computer. it does not recognize the hard drive, when you plug it in. did I forget something here?
    Scott

Illaass, yes I have used this drive on MANY apple compuers from Imac, to mac pro's and my laptop at home. it has worked flawlessly on all of them. It is formatted to Mac. appears to be in working order, and works fine when I transfer it back to my laptop. "problem" laptop does not hold Photoshop, and I have work to do.
It appears to be spinning, and cable apears functional.
noyt sure about the last question though? I do not find the drive ANYWHERE on the new computer.
