Search a Book for Text?

Is there a way to do this? I mean captions, titles, and the like that the editor has entered, not photo file-names or metadata.
TIA

I am not shure what you mean, but if you are looking for buying a regular book with only text inside, you have to look elsewhere, because all books here state as photobooks. Aperture isn't for that. You can put some text beside your photos into Aperture book part, but overall it is pain, it is only for a kind of commenting a photo.
You will miss kerning, a good hyphenation and all you may find in Apple Pages or better in Indesign, Quark XPress and so on.

  • Can i search a document for text in column a to return the entire row if column a matches in a separate sheet?

Can i search multiple sheets in a document for text in column a to return the entire row if column a matches in a
    separate sheet?

Thank you, Barry. That was helpful, and am hopeful that what I want to do is possible.
I am creating a spreadsheet that currently has 20 sheets, of which certain sheets have more than one table.  I will be adding more sheets.  I would like to return results for all occurences of the search string.  Preferably into a seperate spreadsheet.  It would be perfect if that seperate sheet updated whenever I update information in the first spreadsheet.  To give an example:
    Sheet:     baskets
         Tables:         straw
                             wire
    Sheet:      barware
         Tables:          glasses
                              decanters
                              coasters
My tables all have the same titiels:
    Vendor      Description     Cost     Selling Price
Since I will have upwards of 100 sheets, with multiple tables, and most of my vendors will fit into multiple sheet categories, it would be helpful if I could also see what my order will be from each vendor, not just who I will be ordering each item from.  How would I do that?
I hope I conveyed that properly.
Thank you in advance for your help,
    Rana

  • Is it possible to search multiple documents for text?

I have several hundred fake newspaper cuttings that I have generated in Photoshop CS4, in which there are multiple layers of text. I want to search for certain words within all those cuttings, similar to the way I can search for words in InDesign or PDF across multiple documents.
Is that possible, either from within PS or by using third-party software?

I’ve given it some thought and I think Scripting would be the best way after all.
I’ve asked about accessing the texts in a psd without actually opening it in Photoshop in the Scripting Forum, but I’ve been told it might be speedier to actually open the files in psd, so some BrigeTalk might be necessary.
Anyway I wonder if one should upon running the Script create text-files with all the psd-files’ collected texts so that subsequent searches wouldn’t necessitate repeated opening – of course that means risking searching obsolete lists (unless one institutes checks for relative change-dates or some such).
A way that aims much shorter would be to transfer all the textItem.contents to the File Info’s Description with a comparatively simple Script and search the Contents in the Finder.

  • Cannot search for text in a PDF in Safari

I was previously able to use the "search in this document" when viewing a PDF in Safari. This no longer works and I always get "No Matches" when the word is actually in the PDF document. I installed the Chrome app and its "Find in Page" function is grayed out on PDFs so I can't search a PDF for text using it either.
I have uninstalled Adobe Reader and reset all iPhone settings under General and it still doesn't work. I am using iOS 8.1.2 and iPhone 6. Thanks.

I noticed the same problem too and have yet to find a solution. This was an issue with iOS 8.1.1:  http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1814335&page=2  (scroll down to posting #42)

  • Search file for text and delete the found text.  How?

I need to know how to search a file for text and delete the found text. I think grep will let you do this but not sure of the syntax.

    Hi Dmcrory,
In addition to what Camelot and nobody loopback point out, one must also consider the fact that UNIX text tools are largely line based. You also fail to tell us for what kind of text you are searching. If you are looking for multiple words, there's a very good chance of finding the expression wrapped onto different lines. With hyphenation, even single words can wrap to multiple lines. Tools that search line-by-line will miss these unless you use multiline techniques.
Multiline substitutions require that you write "read-ahead" code for the command line tool that you're using and that you take that into account in the substitution. Given how you want the results to be printed out, you may also want to preserve any newlines found in the match, which is even more difficult. That could bring up the subject of line endings but that's a completely different topic.
I apologize if this sounds discouraging. Multiline searches aren't needed that often and in most of those cases, exceptions can be dealt with by hand. I just didn't want you to get surprised by it. To give you an idea of how easy basic substitution is, have a look at Tom Christiansen's Cultured Perl: One-liners 102 and One-liners 101. Both have some "in-place" substitution examples.

  • Searching folders for text

    Hello,
I'm not sure where to post this question, so I hope its OK here.
I have a server which stores millions of pdf files for our clients. Each
pdf file is indexed in a database.
Each record contains a link to the pdf file, which can be downloaded by the
    client. Each pdf
file has been ocr'd and all text in the documents is searchable.
A few of my clients are asking for the ability to search all of their
    documents for words not indexed
in our database, but would be in the ocr'd text. So, what do I have to do
    to search a folder for
text without launching adobe to start the search? Can this be done in a
script? Do I need to purchase
    sdk toolkit?

Thanks Guys,<br /><br />I know I'm not being very clear, so lets try this scenario.<br /><br />I guess my real issue is this:<br />How can I search my server through a url?  I need to find the word "Help"<br />from every document in the "https://www.help.com/January/" folder of my<br />server.  I control the webserver and I control the client software.  I have<br />no idea how to code this simple search.  Am I wrong, isn't this built into<br />adobe pro and reader?<br /><br /><br />TP<br /><br /><[email protected]> wrote in message <br />news:[email protected]..<br />> Hello,<br />><br />> I'm not sure where to post this question, so I hope its OK here.<br />><br />> I have a server which stores millions of pdf files for our clients.  Each <br />> pdf file is indexed in a database.<br />> Each record contains a link to the pdf file, which can be downloaded by <br />> the client.  Each pdf<br />> file has been ocr'd and all text in the documents is searchable.<br />><br />> A few of my clients are asking for the ability to search all of their <br />> documents for words not indexed<br />> in our database, but would be in the ocr'd text.  So, what do I have to do <br />> to search a folder for<br />> text without launching adobe to start the search?  Can this be done in a <br />> script?  Do I need to purchase<br />> sdk toolkit?<br />><br />> TP<br />>

  • Problems with searching for text in Preview

Hi, everyone...I'm hoping someone can help me out with this. I have an old MBP with Tiger installed and Preview 3.0.9. I have attempted to search for words in numerous PDF files and the search function NEVER brings up the words even when I know the words are contained in the document. I read the Preview manual and I know I'm following the correct procedures in searching for text, but nothing seems to work. Can anyone help me out with what I may be doing wrong? Thanks!

I can't picture what you could possibly be doing wrong, there's not much choice in the matter.
The only time Searching fails here is if the text in the PDF is actually only a graphic of the text.
Are these PDFs that you made? If so, what APP?
If you down load this PDF, does Search work on it?

  • Please create "on-the-fly change search engine" option ALSO for when we mark [word] in a text, then right-click, then choose "Search [engine x] for [word]"?

In Firefox 34, you have changed the search bar.
The new style is perfect for those who always starts by typing in, letter for letter, the search term.
People such as myself, we almost never type in the search term,
but instead we mark a [word] in a text, right-click this marked [word], then select "Search [engine x] for [word]".
Speaking for myself, I have now a total of 36 search engine providers, but I usually only use 7 of those.
I use "Wikipedia (English)" most of the time..
    - but then I will switch to e.g. "AniDB" and use that one for 1 hour..
    - or switch to "Google" and use that one for 30 minutes..
    - or switch to "Wikipedia (Norwegian)" and use that one for 2 hours..
    - or switch to "Wiktionary (English)" and use that one for 15 minutes..
..and then I will switch back to "Wikipedia (English)" again.
The way the search bar was in Firefox 33 and earlier, I could very easily switch the default search engine.
Just one click to open the drop-down menu, then choose one.
In Firefox 34, I have to choose "Tools" -> "Options", the "Search" tab..
    - before I can THEN click to open the drop-down menu.
4 clicks instead of 1, that's like 400% more work..!
Also, the fact that I have to go into "Options".. make this..
..I don't know how to put it, it's a kind of psychological barrier that I have to overcome each time.
I mean, before Firefox 34, I went to the "Options" window like maybe 4 times each YEAR,
now, I have to go there 4 times each DAY..!
I am not saying you should revert to the old style Search bar,
as I feel that those you are typing search terms are indeed very happy for this new style..
Instead, I think of 2 possible ways to create happiness also for us that do mark text and choose "Search.."
    1) An "on-the-fly change search engine" option ALSO for when we mark [word] in a text, then right-click, then choose "Search [engine x] for [word]".
This could work as a cascading menu option, where it says..
Search for [word] in -> [engine x]
..and where [engine x] was the current default engine, and all the other engines was listed underneath,
just like the drop-down menu when you switch the default engine.
Additionally, you could have an on / off checkbox in the "Options" "Search" tab, where you had this option:
"Change default search engine when choosing another from the drop-down menu"
THIS would actually be PERFECT.. It would be even much BETTER than in Firefox 33 and earlier..! :-)
    2) If there are things with the first option that don't work (something I've missed etc),
then maybe you could have an on / off checkbox in the "Options" "Search" tab, where you had this option:
    "Use old-style search bar"
This would be off by default, but when switched on, it would give us the old Firefox 33 style Search bar.

Strongly recommend Context Search extension which will solve your problem

  • Search for text and font

I have an 800 page pdf document to index and so far I have a script that will search for a list of keywords. But the text has large sections of code in a different font, and I think we would like to generate an index of just code examples. Is there a way to search for text of a given font in applescript? Something like
set theSel to find text theText
if the font of theSel is "Times"
    write to file, etc.

Please do send a page, I might be able to spot where the font problem is coming from - but no guarantee Address is in my profile.
You asked about the script formatter. red_menace of this forum wrote the script I use. To use it, you copy the script that you want to format to the clipboard and run the formatter. This then places the marked-up text in the clipboard so that you can paste it into the forum page.

    1. Make your iMessage settings.
    2. Change your friends phone number on contacts property of iPhone(not work, home, mobile). if you know his icloud account you can use this too.
    3. Use iMessage while messagging with him.

iTunes doesn't find titles when searching for texts containing diacritics (like "âàéêèëîïôöûùü", in french). Even when a song title is copied and pasted in the search field, it is still not found. I get the same problem when I call the search from AppleScript. When searching for only the part before or the part after the diacritic, then iTunes does find something. I think it is a bug. Is there someone that knows what to do?

Too bad the problem is back with the new iTunes 8.0. It is quite annoying since I got a lot of entries with those diacritics...

  • Editor: Annoying pop-up for choosing main programs when searching for text

    Hi,
We're upgrading to ECC60 and are getting frustrated when searching for text in a source code within the ABAP editor.
For every include contained in the main program you are searching in there is a pop-up asking to choose the main program for that include.
This can get crazy when searching in a standard SAP program such as SAPMV45A. You'll have to process through 30-40 of these pop-up windows before your search results appear. I each pop-up you have to scroll though dozens of main programs to find the one you are doing the search in.
Can this be turned of somehow to have the search functionality work as it did in previous version, where the Editor knows that the program you are launching the search from is the main program you want the results from?
    Thanks,
    Peter
