Search Alternatives

RoboHelp HTMS
Version 8
Several years ago, Peter Grainge recommended an alternative to the Search function called ZoomSearch. Unfortunately, we weren't able to use this product because of problems with out platform and our client's platform.
Our users are still having a very hard time finding what they need using the RoboHelp Search function. I've tried using synonyms and custom search terms, but this only helps slightly.
I'm wondering if there has been any program, other than ZoomSearch, that could be recommended. Or - would a newer version provide better functionality with the Search.
Thanks so much.

LOL on the "more precise" bit.
Here's why it amuses me. In all the RoboHelp classes I facilitate, I demonstrate the difference between search and index. The way I describe search is to say that imagine you have a city with a bad guy in it. Your goal is to identify and take out the bad guy. So with search, it's like dropping a nuclear bomb on the city. You typically get the bad guy but you also get a bunch of stuff you didn't intend to get.
With an Index, it's like using a laser guided missile to hit not just the building the bad guy is in, but the specific room inside the building.
With Search, the user has to completely type the term (or terms) out, then click a button to scan the results, then choose from the most promising results. Sure, the terms they typed are highlighted, so there's a plus. But all of that takes time.
With an Index (if done well), the user begins typing the term they are looking for. And if you have done it well, they only need to type two or three letters, because as they type, the list of Index terms adapts and matches what is being typed. Then when they see what they are looking for they click the link to open the topic containing what they need. So they didn't have the steps of fully typing the terms (and hoping they typed them accurately because search is persnickety that way) they didn't see a list of as many as 500 topics that had the terms inside.
Hopefully you see the value in that... Rick

(Example: I would like to get a list of Employees with Skills on Painting)
I would need Sql syntax to go with SQLCommand  Thank you!

Here is the Article saying that  Full-text search features in SQL 2014 are going to be discontinued soon.
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc646001.aspx
any way I managed to find a solution I used the following syntax
      "select * from Employees where (FullName like '%' + @search + '%')"
It worked Wonderfully, Still Thanks for all the Help.

  • Lookup in advanced search

    Hi
I'm trying to modify the Asset Advanced Search Options in the main window of the FCSvr client. I want to use lookups (aka pop-up or drop-down) as part of the search alternative. Let's say I want the user to be able to search for HD video clips. For this I want a lookup field named "Resolution" that has three alternative, All, HD and SD.
But when I try to create this field I get a search fields with one lookup with the altenative All, Equals and Not Equals, and next to this I get another lookup with the alternative None, HD and SD. What I want is only one lookup in this search field, with the alternative All, HD and SD. Does anyone know if this is possible, and if so, how do I achieve this?
    Christer

Thanks for your reply. I suspected that this was the case.
The strange thing though, is that among the default advanced search options there's a field, Metadata Filtering, that actually has this layout. In this field there is only one lookup. The default is "Do not include log & capture metadata", and then there is two more, "Include log & capture metadata" and "Only include log & capture metadata". Also, strangely, if I open "Filter Mode", that is the lookup for Metadata Filtering, the alternative "Do not include log & capture metadata" isn't even there.
Anyway, I was hoping for a layout for filtering in Advanced Search as e.g. http://www.beyondtheline.org/Video/ but I guess I have to rethink.

  • Searching Mail Messages

Is it just me or is the search function in Apple Mail really bad all of a sudden? I'm searching for messages, which I know are there, and it doesn't find any of them. I have 3 IMAP Google Apps account in Apple Mail and at the moment to search for a specific message I'm having to login to Webmail and then search via Gmail's search function, which then finds the messages I'm after.

One thing thing the cited article doesn't mention is that you can prepare an image that is Spotlight indexed, convert it to a DVD image, and burn that...
With regard to your question, if you know how to use the UNIX command line, open a Terminal window and use grep to search the elmx files. If you don't want to go that route, there are a bunch of desktop search alternatives like Google Desktop which, *I think*, will permit you to to index removable media.

  • OT a little - search php scripts

In the website makeover I'm doing, I 'm looking for search alternatives - right now I use Google for my site search.  I have an objective of making the home page (at least) as lightweight as possible and I thought it would nice to run a php site search script (I have shell access to my host.)  Found a few here: http://www.thefreecountry.com/php/site-search-engine-scripts.shtml
Does anybody have any others they can recommend?
    John

What's missing from Google - nothing in functionality.  I don't want to use an external search provider in the interest of providing the fastest possible web site experience.  I installed Sphider on my host this afternoon and it works pretty well. Getting Sphider set up took a little fiddling, but it wasn't too bad.  Now  I need to remember to index the site when I do changes.

  • RE-Thinkinking My WiFi/3G iPad Order

Since I've ordered the WiFi/3G 64GB version of the iPad I started to re-search alternative ways to use the iPad with always ON WiFi devices. IMO jail-breaking my iPhone is not an option to consider.
Here's the options I've come up:
    1. AT&T iPad plan unlimited data $29.99/m (no commitment)
    1A. AT&T iPad plan 250MB/mo $14.99/m (no commitment)
    2. Sprint "OverDrive" 3G/4G $150 up front cost $50 rebate and $59.99/m (2yr commitment)
    3. Verizon "MYFI" 3G only cost same as Sprint.
    Option #1 first Yr cost $1,258 WiFi/3G 64GB model
    Option #1A first Yr cost $1,078 WiFi/3G 64GB model
Option #2 first Yr cost $1,577 WiFi 64GB model (subtract $100 the next year)
Option #3 first Yr cost $1,577 WiFi 64GB model (subtract $100 the next year)
There's no question AT&T's plan is the cheapest and most flexible, but is it the best option (that's what I'am trying to figure out). AT&T's network speed is what concerns me. Will adding 4-5 hundred thousand iPads, and eventually many-many more bring down the network speed to a grind (hopefully not).
All Im saying is Im re-thinking my WiFi/3G order for the WiFi only model, but currently don't have any solution to make me change my mind.
    Ship High In Transit!

Another option is to get a Palm Pre Plus (or Pixi) from Verizon as your smartphone, and then (on top of your normal service charge) you can pay $40/month to turn it into a wifi hotspot. While the $30/month iPad option is cheaper, the additional $10 would allow you to connect other devices as well. So if you're also in the market for a new phone, that may be a consideration.

Reply: Cor-el > Excellent!! Thank You. In Tools, Add Ons, Extensions there was a Default Tab enntry which was the culprit. Am running W7 so the XP Tools, Options, Advanced , Use Hardware acceleration when available, wasn't of much help here, however I did fix a problem on another computer running XP with that same fix. Thank You very much! HD

  • Alternatives for podcast searching?

With every upgrade to itunes, the podcast feature has become worse (even though the number of podcasts have increased).  I can't search by date anymore and key words only bring up a few results which are usually corporate owned.  Three or four years ago I could type in a word like "gardening news" and get about 1000 results and then I could sort and drill down by date, program, topic, and get the most recent shows.   I've found the most interesting podcasts are usually the ones that AREN'T made by broadcasting companies, such as Kindle Chronicles, Relic Radio and Zencast. Unless you know the EXACT name of the podcast you want, the results only direct you the few popular items.
Are there any plugins or alternatives to search for podcasts besides itunes?  Or is there a widget that takes the itunes podcast database and offers it up in a more usable way?
    Kate

I, too, am trying to set up Podcast Capture on my macbook pro and experienced the same difficulties as vicfromchicago.   Following the procedure in the account setup window I am prompted to enter a "Podcast Producer server" to connect to.  I responded by entering my MAC IP Address to which I got the prompt "Invalid arguments".  I don't know where to go from here!!  Any suggestions?  Thanks..

  • Freely Programmed search help - Accessing Alternative node

    Hi Experts,
I am trying to use Freely Programmed search help for calling a custom WD component on pressing of F4 of an input field.
I have done everything required and the component is being called properly as well.
The issue here is that i need to pass two values to the the custom WD component on F4. As suggested in one of the threads I used F4_CONTEXT_ELEMENT to get the reference of the source context node and attributes. But the problem is that this gives reference to only that node which has the input field with F4 help (which is being used to call the custom component). The values which i need to pass are present in some other node.
Can you please suggest a way of accessing the other node to retrieve and use the values in the custom component called?
    Regards,
    Ritvik
Edited by: Ritvik Prasad on Mar 31, 2010 5:16 AM

    Hi Manas,
Thanks for the suggestion. I had thought about it too. But the problem that i faced was that no event is triggered/Method called on pressing of F4 on that input field (its internally handled in the framework). In that case what should be the method/event where i should copy the values from the other node to the new attributes created so that it reflects in the Custom component?.
If you could just elaborate on that it would be really helpful.
    Hi Chris,
Thanks a lot for this. That actually sounds like fun. I tried looking for options to do that. Although i can get to the node from the element using "GET_NODE" but there I could not find the method "GET_PARENT_ELEMENT" to get the parent element (context as you said). Is there any other method which could possibly return the parent element which i could eventually use to get to the other node.
It would be great if you could help out with this.
    Thanks ,
    Ritvik

  • XQuery - In search of alternatives for "ora:view"

Instead of the following XQuery statement, what could be alternatives, regarding re-writing the statement, via options like:

    - table(xmlsequence())

So I am looking for alternative statements and/or an alternative for ora:view
    Thanks for the effort

  • Every few seconds, WiFi says: "Searching for Networks", alternating with WiFi: "ON"

WiFi seems to be scanning for networks every few seconds. In between, it is showing ON.
Other computers on the same home wireless network are fine. My home network appears
to be strongest, why does the Apple WiFi keep scanning? internet seems to be intermittent.
This started a couple days ago, no change in hardware for a long time.

    It's functioning as intended.
OS X is assuming that you clicked the Wi-Fi icon for a reason: to be given the option to connect to a different wireless network should you so choose.

  • Firefox won't allow typing into Google search bar whereas Chrome will

    Hi,
I'm currently running Firefox 6.0.2 on Windows XP SP3 with Outlook 2003 SP3. No changes made recently to anything.
Suddenly several errors happening at once, most involving Firefox.
    1) Homepage Google. I cannot type anything in Google search bar.
If I replace it with e.g. Yahoo I can type anything, but replace it with Google and it is blocked again. I have re-booted, removed and replaced homepage etc no help.
    2) If I type www.hotmail.co.uk in Firefox address bar at top of screen it refuses to find the site. Nothing happens at all. Any other address I have typed in it had found ok, but this one remains blocked.
    3) It is difficult to see an immediate relationship to Firefox with this one, but it started at exactly the same time and also involves Google, so it is a bit of a coincidence otherwise. I keep getting Google delay messages on many of my emails. In fact they never get through, and I don't even have a Google email account!
I use SKY email, Outlo0k as above and both are working normally apart from the bizarre Google messages as below:

I have removed the actual email addresses but they were perfectly accurate. Resending the emails by cutting and pasting worked in all cases so it is hard to see why the originals failed.
I would be grateful for any help or suggestions
    Many thanks

In the address bar type "about:config" without the quotation marks.
Then in the Filter field type keyword.
    Then double click keyword.URL
and type or copy and paste the following: "http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q=" without the quotations.
And there you have it. Your browser will use google to search.
