Search box in help missing.

I have discovered that the search field is missing in all the Apple help files, i.e. Mail, Finder, iTunes, iMovie, etc. Does anybody know why, please? Also, since upgrading with the Giga Designs Model:7A-1600U (Freescale 7447A processor) I cannot perform a restart> If I suffer a crash I can only restart by selecting Startup Manager that is holding down the option key and selecting my startup disc. Any ideas please? What it means is that I cannot boot from any CD, even the Install disk.

Hi Again Terry!
You're Welcome!
I notice that you have marked your question as answered, but have not utilized the Helpful or Solved options. That may be intentional, but if you are not aware of how those work, here is the information.

What are question answers?
When a community member posts a question as a topic starter, other members can post an answer in reply. Please note that not all replies actually answer the question.
In some cases, an answer can be just some hints or helpful information to help the poster solve an issue. The originator of the topic can mark such a reply as a Helpful post. In other cases, a community member may post a specific answer that provides a solution to the original poster's issue. The originator can then mark this reply as a Solved post.
The original topic poster has the choice to mark replies as either Helpful or Solved, or not mark a reply at all. In addition, the originator can end the discussion by marking the topic as Answered, which provides a visual cue—a green star—to the community members. This lets everyone know that the topic contains valid helpful information.
Note: Only two replies may be classified as Helpful and only one reply may be classified as Solved in any question topic. Non-question topics do not offer these classifications.

  • "Mac Help" Search Box is suddenly missing!!

Out of the blue when I access Mac Help the screen no longer displays the search box and magnifying glass icon. Everything else is there but it means the only way I can get help is to try and find something that matches my question in the Index. This is not always good enough. Anyone got any ideas how to fix this?

Found the answer to this one via "The X Lab" as listed on someone else's post. Followed instructions to change Library prefs and now it's working again

  • On one of my Macs shift-command-f brings a search box that is missing the "To, From, CC, or BCC" option. How can this be fixed?

I run Thunderbird on ~5 Macs and PCs. I am old fashioned and use the brute force search option which you get by edit->find->find messages or option-command-f on a Mac. On one of my Macs a number of the search field options are missing. In particular the "From, To, CC, or BCC" option is missing. I have looked carefully on the Thunderbird support pages, the web, and in the config editor and have not be able to fix this. Any hints on how to restore these missing search fields would be appreciated.

  • Help menu "Search" box missing in Dreamweaver 5.5 for Mac

I've just upgraded from CS3 to CS5.5 on Mac OS 10.6.8 and am still finding my way around the new menus.  The easiest way to find a menu command is usually to use the spotlight type "search" box that appears at the top of the help menu, which flags up exactly were each command is when you type in it's name. However, while the search box is there in my other CS5.5 applications it's missing from Dreamweaver.  Can anyone tell me how to fix this?
I have tried the obvious things like repairing permissions and rebooting and have also got Spotlight to re-index my hard disk  in case the fault lay there, but it didn't help.
Just to clarify, here's how the help menu looks in Dreamweaver with the "search" box missing.
And here's how the "search" box appears in the other CS5.5 applications.

You need to use F1 key to launch this window:
Alternatively, you can download the full helpfile in pdf form from this link:

  • Help menu search box missing

In every program, I'm missing the useful little search box in the help menu. This is what it looks like:
I first noticed this when I started up Brackets. My uptime was 14 days, and some programs were still working (like Terminal), but every new one I opened had this problem. I tried doing killall SystemUIServer, which didn't work, and restarting didn't fix it either. Clicking the highlighted portion closes the "Help" menu and highlights it until another menu is accessed.
    I miss this!
Anyone know what I could do to get it back?

Woo, maybe we can figure this out!
The QuickLook plugins I was talking about are QLColorCode, QLMarkdown, QLStephen, and Suspicious Package. I doubt any of them have much to do with it.
I've been using AppCleaner and Alfred forever, never Quicksilver. Alfred has one workflow that lets you search for actions in a program's menus, which boils down to an AppleScript. This provides most of the functionality of the help search bar, but causes some apps including Chrome and Photoshop to crash (for which accessing the Help menu makes them crash as well).
I also have Mountain Tweaks, and I think I had Onyx at some point. I prefer the one-line "defaults write..." commands, and I've done too many to keep track of, but they don't usually cause any damage... I think BetterTouchTool may be the culprit but I have no idea why this would persist after removal with AppCleaner unless it left some kext lying around, and I don't know too much about managing those.
The first thing I tried when I noticed this was to do "killall SystemUIServer" (which didn't work of course) and I still think an app interacting with SystemUIServer is causing this. If you don't use iStat Menus it's probably not responsible, although it does use menucracker to behave like a system menubar icon. I've had it for too long to really be suspicious.

  • I just bought an iPhone 4s. Now the search iphone function is not working. When I swipe the screen to the left, the search box appears but when I type what I want to search for, there is no action. Please help.

I just got an iphone 4s. Now the search iphone function is not working. When I swipe the start screen, the search box shows up. But when I type what I want to search, there is no action. Please help.

    Try this...
You will Not Lose Any Data...
Turn the Phone Off... ( if it isn’t already )
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
Wait for the Apple logo to Appear and then Disappear...
Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... (But can take Longer...)
    Release the Buttons...
    Turn the Phone On...

  • Exchange Server 2003 and OWA: Missing search box in contacts

Don't know what has happened here, we got a new server administrator.
Using OWA, connecting to our Server 2003 at the office.  He has put the Contacts in a Public Folder that we drill down into to access.  When accessing from home via OWA, and having drilled down to that public folder where the contacts reside, there
isn't a search box.  In other words, if I wanted to search for a contact via OWS, I can't.  I have to sift through page by page, hoping I come upon the contact.
Any help here?  The new administrator seems to push this off on the guy that just left.  Oy vey….

If server has enabled ActiveSync you can use Windows 8 Mail Client - works almost like Outlook.
AFAIR Outlook 2013 can't work with Exchange 2003.

  • Help with creating a search box

    Lo,
I am making a website using dreamweaver 8 and was wondering
if anyone could help me in making a simple search box. If your
wondering what i mean when i say search box, i mean a text field
where you can enter a search subject and a button to submit the
search. Not unlike the search areas you see on most popular
websites. So far I've been able to make the text field and button
but i am having trouble with scripting them so that they actually
preform a search. I'm guessing that I will have to make a new page
that to display search results, but other that that i'm pretty much
in the dark about how to go about it. Anyone who could help me out
or show me where I could get help, I would really appriciate
    it!

Thats a good one Nancy, might look into that for an upcoming
    client.
Atomz have one as well, customizable too.

  • HELP!!!...Firefox 4...STOP cursor focus from going to Bing search box????

I just installed Firefox 4....Now every time I open firefox the cursor will automatically jump to the bing search box.
I want it to start and stay inside the address bar.
A long time ago I had this same problem and searched online and found a solution. I don't remember exactly what it was, but it was something like going into about:config and switching some settings inside there. That fixed the issue and ever time I would open Firefox my cursor would START and STAY in the address bar.
Can anyone help me figure this out again? I don't want any add ons or extensions, I want it back to the way it was this morning before I upgraded to version 4.
    Thanks in advance!

    ***SOLVED***
    I finally found the solution...
I have a Windows 7 64bit laptop, but this should work for Vista users as well...possibly XP users too, if you switch a couple of the folders around, if you're an advanced user you shouldn't have a problem....
add this code to your firefox '''''"prefs.js"''''' file, you can find pref.js here, just follow the steps...
    C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\f9cunhcx.default\prefs.js]]
Now add this line to the bottom of the list. Keep in mind for changes to take effect you must have Firefox closed, otherwise it'll just over write any changes you attempt to make and nothing new will happen.
    '''user_pref("capability.policy.default.HTMLInputElement.focus", "noAccess");'''
After adding the above line, save the pref.js file and reopen Firefox, you'll now notice your cursor won't be in the search box. You'll have to manually put the cursor to where you want it to be. I have my home page set to www.msn.com it would drive me nuts that as soon as I open the page my cursor focus would go to the bing search bar. It wouldn't be so bad if it went to the google search bar in the top right hand corner...but anyways I hope this helps someone else out. If it does please leave a comment on your experience for the next person.
    Thanks,
    James
