Search by file size in Spotlight

I want to find all of the "Large" files on my drive to do some house cleaning. Is there a way in Spotlight to search for files larger than a certain size? I do not seem to be able to delete files from the spotlight window. I search for a file name and find I have duplicates of the file and would like to delete the some of the duplicates but can not delete them.
Paul

The important thing, if you want to be able to move files to the Trash from the results, is to do a Find (Cmd-F) in Finder.
Just set the criteria to Size-GreaterThan-
It may help also to put the results window into List View (Cmd-2) so that you can see the Size column.

  • Can I add file size to spotlight window?

Currently the only file information that displays is name, kind and last opened. I'd like to get the file size to display as well to help me ID which version of files I want. For that matter can I add other parameters to the sortable bar at the top of the file list (even if they're not searchable parameters).
    Thanks

We get three and only three choices. Can't even have date created or modified, which are searchable criteria, we are stuck with Last Opened (who in the world is ever looking for that anyway????). If you think this is absurd, be sure to let Apple know:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html/
Tell all your friends and relatives to do the same. Enough people complained about the downgraded powers of Stacks so that Apple brought back the Tiger functionality that had been eliminated. Perhaps if enough people complain about the crippled Spotlight GUI we will see some of its former functionality returned.

  • Searching by file size

    Hi all,
I've searched and searched for an answer to this, but didn't have any luck. I'm trying to search files by size. I've tried a smart folder, but size isn't listed as a searchable attribute. And I'm clueless when it comes to Spotlight (at least the Leopard version). Any help would be great!
    Thanks!

I guess I'm not following you now. All I want to do is see files larger than, say, 100MB on my hard drive. I'm not able to select size as a searchable attribute using any method suggested here, or anywhere else. I did try creating a new admin account, and I'm still not able to select any size attribute in a smart folder in the new account. As for spotlight being disabled, that was performed with Cocktail shortly after the install. I guess I wasn't clear on whether you think re-enabling it will help or not. I seriously hope there isn't a problem with the install. It's taken me days to get things the way I like and the thought of having to start over is slightly nauseating.

  • Search by File Size

    Hi All,
I have got the error when searching document limited by size.
We did search, displays the results, click on search options, in the predefined properties select Size and enter value say GT 100 MB. I would expect to display files which is greater than 100 MB in size. But it is ended with "<b>Error: General Error (Error code 1999)</b>"
    We are in EP50 SP50 - J2EE 6.20
    Thanks for your help.
    Best Regards,
    Ravi

    Hi Ravi,
    1) The syntax that the UI wants is < 100 or > 1000 or <= 100000 - the number meaning bytes (not kBytes or MBytes)
    2) There is better user guidance in the UI of the KM in NW'04
    3) Still, you should not get an error, because of the wrong notation, but rather "no results".

  • How to search by File Size--Freeing up Disk Space

I'm wondering if there is a way to search my hard drive for the largest files...I have a 120GB hard drive and no space left, and I want to find out what is taking the space...
Is there a way to view the largest files on my hard drive?
Is there a utility to help clean up files that are no longer being used or that are irrelevant?
    Thanks!

  • HDD reads almost full but when I add file size it only 50%

When I get into on my HDD its says it has 70GB used & 4GB unused, but when I go into finder to try to delete unneeded files I only see about 35GB. Where's the other half? I figured it illed it because I recently captured video, but I can find it to delete it. It there a way to list all files in the HDD drive by file size of do a search by file size (lets say 1GB & up)?

    Did you empty the Trash?
Your Mac needs adequate hard drive space to operate normally. How full can a drive be before it's too full? There is no hard and fast rule that says “X” amount or “%” of free drive space is needed. A low amount of RAM requires more drive space for Virtual Memory’s swap files.

  • File size in predefined searches

Is it not possible to have the file size displayed in predefined searches?
    Thanks for any help...rob

Understood. See http://www.pinkmutant.com/articles/Leopard/leospot.html for info on Leopard's Spotlight and my mod to Finder's Find at http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6725932 for what you can change so you can find stuff.
If you want to report this to Apple, send bug reports and enhancement requests via its Bug Reporter system. To do this, join the Apple Developer Connection (ADC)—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Since you already have an Apple username/ID, use that. Once a member, go to Apple BugReporter and file your bug report/enhancement request. The nice thing with this procedure over submitting feedback is that you get a response and a follow-up number; thus, starting a dialog with engineering.

  • Any way to have file size included in the first search in finder?

Is it possible to somehow show file sizes when doing a search in finder?
On Panther, it was very helpful to have the file sizes listed. This immediately revealed whether the photoshop files I was looking for were full size or reduced.
But when I run a search in Snow Leopard it only shows name, kind and last opened. Otherwise I have to also add a second search to add in file size.
Any way to have file size included in the first search?
    Thanks!

Well, I wish I could take credit for knowing it was there before two days ago... but I dropped my laptop a couple months ago and it finally died for good on Friday, and I noticed this on the new laptop when setting up my Finder preferences.

  • Searching for a specific file size

    Hello,
It's been a while but it seems like XP let me search for specific file sizes - e.g. if I wanted to search for files that were greater than 10GB or if I wanted to search for files less than 20GB.
I can't figure it out in Windows 8.1.
If the answer is possible through standard search and not powershell, I'd prefer the GUI way.
    Thanks

In File Explorer (was Windows Explorer), type the search criteria into the box in the top right of the screen and press Enter.
    Example searches are:
A minimum file size, simply type size:>30,000KB into the Search box and press Enter.
type:=.pdf or type:=.doc will display specific file types.
filename:x will display files using a partial filename. x represents the partial filename you want to search for.
kind:video, kind:music or kind:pictures will find all the videos, music or pictures.
If you just click or tap in the Search box, Search Tools will appear which allows the choosing of a Kind, a Size, Date Modified, Other Properties and Advanced search. In Folder Options > Search Tab, the search options can be changed, e.g. Find partial
    matches.
Providing the location is indexed, you can search in File Explorer for a specific word or phrase by typing content:
followed by your phrase enclosed in double quotes. This will produce a list of files matching the criterion.
Speed up the search by opening File Explorer (was Windows Explorer) at the folder you want to search, rather than at the root folder. Also, pressing F3 will show Search options like Date Modified and Size.
Ninety-nine per cent of politicians give the rest a bad name.

  • Getting Spotlight to Search System Files by Default !??!

9 out of every 10 times I need to use spotlight, it's to find a system file. Usually something involving latex. I know that I can modify a finder search by choosing "other" + "System Files" + "include". But i'd rather just be able to turn that on by default. Is there a command line entry that I will force to spotlight to always search system files?

  • Finder search results - is there an option to display file size?

recent OSX/Mac convert here - so apologies if this is a dopey question.
When I search for files using the search function in Finder, only the file 'Name', 'Kind' and 'Last Opened' columns are displayed on the list & coverflow views.
A file 'Size' column would be very useful: is it possible to modify the results display to include more columns?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Try the advice in this article: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080229204517495
(Although, IMO, that should be a built-in option.)
EDIT: Misunderstood your question. You can't, unfortunately. If you're as displeased by that as me, send feedback to apple: http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

  • Does Spotlight Search HTML Files?

I have a folder full of HTML files I just imported to my MacBook about a week ago. They have been backed up by my Time Capsule. But when I search for keywords in the contents of them, they do not show up. The file names will show up, but none of the contents (which are mainly text). I have tried to force Spotlight to search only the folder that contains the files, but it does not seem to be searching the HTML files.
Are HTML file contents excluded from Spotlight searches? I seem to have a number of webpages that come in Spotlight for keyword searches that appear to be the result of searching the file contents. So is there a trick to this? Is there some way I can force Spotlight to index this folder? Just not sure why it seems to search the contents of some HTML files and not others.

Are HTML file contents excluded from Spotlight searches?
No, HTML files are not excluded.
Open System Preferences > Spotlight, under Search Results tab is Webpages checked?
If yes, download a new html file and see if Spotlight finds it. If yes, then it could be a permissions issue with the files you imported. Do a Get Info and compare permissions between the new and old files.
You can reset your permissions on all your files similar to Disk Utility using the Recovery Drive. See instructions here:
Use OS X Recovery Disk Assistant to reset Your files and folder permissions

  • Why does Firefox search for Files, Folders and Sizes during the install?

Every time I install an upgrade to Firefox is scans for File Size, Files and Folders... Why?

I reset Firefox a second time and now everything seems to be working fine, as you described: "The Forward slash (/) worked for quick find and the Apostrophe (') worked for Quick Find Links Only."
    Thanks.

  • Display file size

i'm trying to get the file size displayed in the finder.  i can right click on an individual file to 'get info' and find the size, but can the size be displayed routinely in the finder?
i tried to 'view options' but 'size' and 'calculate size' are greyed out and cannot be checked.

Are you talking about the results of Spotlight searches? If yes, see this tip

If no, post a screen shot.
