Search by folder name? Monitor folders for changes?

Im a long time PC user that LOVED how Picasa automatically indexed any locations that I told it to keep track of. I just got Aperture - but so far I am utterly disappointed in the search function.
When I used to import all of my photos the folder that each import would go under would be the events title.
For instance if I shot a wedding I would name the folder "John Smith" because in picasa I could just search for "Smith" and it would have all of the files in that folder as results - regardless of their metadata.
So here I am with a 2 week old Macbook that I love - but I cant find any of the photos that I want to find.
My library has roughly 40K images - so without the ability to search by folder names it takes me forever to find the files I am looking for.
*Surely I am an idiot and just dont know how to search by folder name - can someone enlighten me?*
Also - is it possible for Aperture to monitor certain folders for changes - for instance if I save something to my library folder from photoshop - do I then have to import that one file I just saved? Picasa would just display it under the folder its in - is there any programs for Macs that behave like this?

aperture can indeed search on the project title. a little harder to find in the filter dialog, but it is there.
but again, you'll have to import your data differently than i think you did the first time.
i'm sorry that you're not happy with Aperture doing what you want, but then again, you're upset because it doesn't work with you're old folder structure. Not every application can be expected to be designed for every possible methodology that someone used to manage their existing data. It was set up to be used more visually than your old method and if you can't take the time to organize your photos when you import them to Aperture, then you're right, it probably isn't for you.
i would suggest you watch the tutorial on searching to see all of the additional metadata you can search by, maybe it would help in some way.... but if not, good luck with LR

  • Option to search a folder name in the Mail App

It would be great, event indispensable for people who's organizing their mailbox in multiple folders, to have the possibility to search a folder name whatever it's in the hierarchy view of the all the folders in the mailbox or when you want to file an email to a specific folder.
A simple search field on the top of the folders view would be great! That's one thing executive people's that are switching from BlackBerry to iPhone are complaining about.

  • Monitor folders for library

I have all my music under a folder called "music" (makes sense, huh? hehe), underneath are the folders, 1 folder for each artist...Sometimes I add 4-5 cd's in the artists folders en then add them to my library...
Isn't it possible to let iTunes "monitor" the "Music" folder and when something is added, automaticle add it to the library.
Another option is to add the "Music" folder and let it completly scan it, but it would be nicer if it was done automaticly.

Unlike Windows Media Player iTunes doesn't have a folder monitoring feature. Shame, I'd like it too. There is a tool called iTunes Library Updater that will do the same job for you. Scans selected folders and can add new files that are not in the library & remove references in the library to files that can't be found. It's a bit slow on a large library, but not slow enough to force me to find/write something better.

  • Can iTunes monitor folders for new files and add to library?

    Hi,
Is there a way to have iTunes monitor my media folders so that if I add any media files in those folders, iTunes will catch the added media files and add them into the library automatically? I have been using something similar in WMP10; moving to iTunes since iPods are not supported in WMP Sorry if this has already been asked (couldnt find anything similar through search)

  • Monitoring directory for changes

    Hi,
I have to write application that identify file changes in specific directory and do some action with those changes (insert those new text files to DB).
Does anyone know how can i do it ?
    P.S.
    sorry for my bad english.

You'll have to store the time when you last looked for modified files. You could maintain a single time, one for the whole search. Since you have acess to a database, I'd suggest that you create a table and store it there.
First time you look for modified files, database time will be empty. So, update all files (or whatever your requirement is) to database and store the time of your lookup in the database. From next time, you'll get the time of last updated files lookup from database and look up the file modified times of each file using the lastModified() method of the File object and update those files that are greater than the time you stored in your database.
The lastModified() method returns a long. So, it is better to store the time value in database as long (System.currentTimeMillis()) too.

  • Search Text Include Folder Names

It appears that when I create a filter searching specific text, the text values of the underlying folders that the images are in are not being considered.  For instance if my folder structure was YYYY\Event\Eventsub1\Eventsub2 and I wanted to search for all images that involved Eventsub1 or Event over multiple years, it doesn't seem to consider the folder name as searchable for the filter function.
Because I had a prior structure before moving over to LR (starting with beta) I have been reluctant to eliminate the structure altogether and rely solely on keywords as it is also easy to find images when outside of LR in this familiar structure.  This has led to including a "theme" keyword with each image that pretty much is the Eventsub2 subfolder, then create a keyword structure equal to Event\Eventsub1 and drag the new keyword under that structure for organization.  This seems to be duplicative, and error prone.
So ... my question, is anyone else able to search for images in folders with names that include text "xxxxxx"?
    Thank.

It seems to have worked for me.  I went to All Photographs and entered the name of a folder.  For me it's kind of difficult because I often have other tags the same as the folder names, but I think my test was correct.
You might want to consider using other metadata fields besides just keywords.  I use the field Job Identifier to identify pictures taken on trips or other identifiable groups of pictures (an example might be France 2009).  It is usually the same as my folder structure (or a superset thereof, actually, because I usually have subdirectories by date) but I thought this gives me two ways to find things and if pictures get out of their file structure they still have that identifying information in the metadata.  More commonly used tags are title and caption.  Different people use one or the other for their primary "caption", depending probably on the other tools they use and their flexibility, or lack thereof, but that leaves the second one for something else.  Also, there are a set of location fields which I usually fill in.  City, State, Country are obvious, but the other one, called simply Location, can be more general.  I let the GPS program fill it in but I often change it to something else.  For example, Somethingorother State Park.

  • Restrict Permission to change the Folder name of Cfolder Collaboration

    Hi,
As a part of my requirement i would like to restrict the users having the 'WRITE' authorizations  from changing the folder name of folders created under the collaboration. It would be great if you any one can provide some inputs to achieve it

    Hello Vikas,
I can tell you a workaround, how to achieve this.
as an administrator with admin authorization navigate into a folder press the authorization button and select read authorization for (a) user(s)/user group(s)/role(s) used in the collaboration.
Then create under the folder a new folder "Workspace" and navigate into this folder press the authorization button and select write authorization for (a) user(s)/user group(s)/role(s) used in the collaboration.
The procedure could be automated by writing a piece of code, which calls the cFolders APIs:

  • Flie / folder name... can I change the font... how?

    please note:
I would like to know how to change the system display font for FILE NAMES or FOLDER NAMES, NOT how to change font in general or while in different applications. (I have been told to go to Font Book...)
my os is in English but a lot of my files are in Traditional Chinese. Since Tiger is so wonderful, I have no problem having it display Chinese characters. However, my new iMac is using this weird Traditional Chinese character that looks like handwriting by default. I would like to have it changed but I couldn't find anything in the System Preferences that allows me to do so. I remembered it was where I change this kind of setting back in OS9. A clue, anyone... please?

However, my new iMac is using this weird Traditional
Chinese character that looks like handwriting by

I don't see this on my machine. Could you send me a screenshot (tom at bluesky dot org)? Have you installed any additional Chinese fonts on your machine? I don't think you can change this.

  • Find photos by Folder name or Import Folder name into Metadata

In iPhoto, I can locate photos by folder name. Is this available in Aperture (Managed or Referenced)? From what I've seen, you can only search on metadata fields, none of which contain folder names.
If I cannot search on folder names, can Aperture import folder names into Metadata automatically. In other words, if I import a directory tree 2009Games, with subfolders Game-ABC, Game-DEF, etc.
Can Aperture insert the subfolder name into the photo's metadata? I know I can add the text manually, but I would like Aperture to import a top level folder like 2009Games, and add the subfolder directory name to each photo's metadata.
If that is not an option, how does someone migrate from folder organization to metadata searches without renaming every photo?

What project and folder naming structure do you intend to use in Aperture to manage your collection?
The inclusion of the file name in metadata for searching purposes seems to be redundant as you can always, if you really need to, see where a particular image is located on the hard disk by right clicking on it in Aperture and selecting "Show in Finder".

  • XL Reporter - folder name with funny character

    Hi experts,
I'm using SAP B12007A PL:30 and XL Reporter Version 8.0.13.
When I try to start my xl reporter, all predefined folder names in Report Organizer change
to funny character. For example, the predefined folder name of "Inventory" display as "B1_11_2304".
    Please advice. Thanks

    Hi,
    Kait Chong.
once again you disconnect XL Report Add on in Add on Manager then you Connect XL Report. B1_11_2304".  this is Inventory ID. try to Uninstall XL Report and install XL Report Add on then it will show
Dimensions are transaction data that has underlying tables (master data) in the SAP Business One database. For instance, if you have a transaction with the name of a sales person recorded, you can have an underlying Sales Employee table that holds more information about the sales person. Other examples of dimensions are: Financial Period, G/L Accounts, Business Partner, Warehouses, Items, Vendor and many more.

  • Changing the display name of project file folders for TOC

I'm interested in changing the display names of the project file folders for my TOC. For example, I want to name the folder "01-intro" so that it is short and lowercase. But I'd like the TOC to say "Introduction to the System." I know I can manually rename the folder in the TOC either through its properties or by right-clicking => Rename, but I auto-create the TOC occasionally and I don't want to have to rename every folder every single time.
Does anyone know if there is a way to set a persistent property for the folder so that its display name in the TOC is different? I am using RoboHelp 9. I saw an option called "Detail" in the properties of the WebHelp layout in RoboHelp 8 that seems like it may have done that, but I no longer see this property in RoboHelp 9.
Any assistance would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I think the lack of response confirms that if you are going to use Auto Create, you have to accept the way it is.
