Search Color Book in Photoshop: Broken

PANTONE + Color Bridge Coated-V2 and several other books are not functioning as they should.
In the bottom of the Photoshop Color Libraries box it says....
Type a color name to select it in the color list.......NOT!
Several Color Libraries are not searchable! What a HUGE bug for our Studio!
ADOBE vs PANTONE problem?! Hmmmm nobody seems to know?!
It has been a year now and still no fix!
paul

No, the spot color books are LAB based, because they represent a specific spot color.
The CMYK based books are CMYK based, because they represent specific CMYK percentages.
If you want an accurate CMYK percentage for a spot color, then you need to know the exact press condition you will use and convert from the LAB specified spot color to your exact press condition (CMYK profile).
Using a pre-baked conversion from spot color to CMYK will only work if your press conditions exactly match the conditions used by the book author (which they rarely do).
Photoshop's color books come directly from Pantone, with a little cleanup and testing done by Adobe (because there is always a mistake or fifteen).
Yes, you need to check with PANTONE to see if they have fixed this issue in the libraries they create.
If not, you need to press them to fix the issue in the libraries they create.

  • Can I replace Pantone color books in InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop?

These new Pantone + books are a pain in ...well... you understand.  In my years as a designer, I have just clicked on the correct book and color swatch, but now...
I am using Windows 7 and the CS6 suite of products.  We have a company logo in which both main colors have dramatically changed with the new books.  I won't go into all of the tricks we've tried to be able to place it in new documents without the color changing.  I now think the only answer is to replace the color books as Adobe recommends.  I do have two questions, though.
First, can I change the books in all of my products?  Adobe only gives instructions for Illustrator and InDesign, but I regularly have to change vendor logos into our company colors in photoshop, and I am finding the color in Photoshop isn't the same when I bring that logo into Illustrator, even though they have the same number.
Second, what are the end results if I do change the books when I send a document to a printer?  We usually do our printing in-house, so I am wondering when we buy PMS 2955 if it will be what I see in the old books or the new books.  And what will an out-of-house printer be using?
My main two concerns are (1) seeing the correct color on screen and (2) printing the correct color.  I don't really care how I get there, but I'd like it to be a permanent fix so I don't have to go in and manipulate swatches every time I add a logo to an item.
    Thanks for any help!
BTW - haven't been to this new forum format and don't know if I am posting this in the right place.  If not, please help me find the correct location.  Thanks!

HI this is good. But i have already seen this.
Its very informative but somehow i felt it lacks the punch and fun factor in a video. I need something which captivates and entrances the audience, not a speech kind of a thing.
    Anything else??

  • Can't type (search) PANTONE+ numbers in InDesign CS5 7.0.4 Color Books

There is a glaring issue in trying to select Pantone+ colors by typing in the color number, like 97-8 (from the CMYK Pantone+ book) yields 17-1?! I have no idea why that comes up. And the panel is almost unusable due to this inexcusable oversight. It needs to be searchable by exact Pantone+ number. JUST LIKE REGULAR PANTONE NUMBERS in the regular color book, I could type in 18-1 and get 18-1 not some obscure number.
I have seen a few similar posts without proper answers EVEN IF it said it was answered.
I have pantone+ libraries installed. They just don't work when it comes to typing in the number you want...you have to scroll, and the scroll is way too slow or way too fast and very painful to use.
    Please help!
    Thank you!

This seems to only be the case with the Pantone+ Process color books. "Pantone+ CMYK Coated" & "Pantone+ CMYK Coated". This is a huge problem for me since 99.9% of our jobs are CMYK.
And I did reinstall the swatches recently and that did not fix InDesign.
But the Pantone+ CMYK color books work in Illustrator CS5 just fine... you can type in your number and get your color.

  • Creating a Spot Color Channel in Photoshop

Can anyone teach me how to make a Spot Color Channel on Photoshop? I am using this image as an example. The blue color in the background needs to be printed mostly with a spot color that is close to the original painting color (ex: Pantone Blue 072C) . But the CMYK color still should be present in within the blues to resemble the subtle nuances of the brush strokes. I can’t figure it out on my own.
For more samples of painting images, please go to http://www.flickr.com/photos/batzorig
The reason I am doing this is because the artist’s works were represented on many publications over the years from many different countries. And we found out that CMYK color alone cannot duplicate the blue color very well (I mean the blue only, no problem with other colors). I know, it is hard to believe, but if you see all the publications and compare it to the original art, you would see the huge difference in color saturation and luminosity. That is the reason, I think it is necessary to use a spot blue for an upcoming catalog of the artist.
It will be a huge help in my work progress if I learn to make the Spot Color Channel. Then I can talk with the printers about this method.

Understanding color space diagrams for CIE(1931) and CIELab isn't easy,
but gradually one gets used to interpret them by intuition.
    (1) helps understanding CIE(1931) chromaticity.
The horseshoe contour contains all possible colors with luminance left
out. Indicated colors are just for orientation. Yellow is the 'locus' for
bright yellow  and brown (dark yellow) as well. White is the locus for
white and black - colors without saturation at a certain center. For two
colors on the same ray to the center, the color with larger distance is
    more brilliant or vibrant.
You're right - adding green and orange ink in Hexachrome doesn't
extend the gamut at the blue side. But Cyan and Magenta (and Yellow
and Black) are different to common CMYK inks as well, and this
    delivers more brilliant blues.
    (2) shows the effect, now in CIELab in a horizontal slice for constant
lightness. Besides theoretical aspects, the diagram can be (again) inter-
    preted by intuition.
The complete diagram is threedimensional. A shown color is not just
a placeholder (as in the CIE chromaticity diagram) but a more or less
correct reproduction, as good as possible, depending on the medium.
It seems indeed that there are few print houses using Hexachrome,
but (3)  is one of them.
What's to do for the actual catalog? Printing by inkjet would be a
solution, because inkjets can use additional inks like Green, Orange,
Blue, mostly by replacing standard inks like LightCyan, LightMagenta,
Gray. The inkjet can be calibrated by GretagMacbeth ProfileMaker's
Multicolor Module. That would be very expensive. Even without
additional inks the blues can be reproduced fairly good.
As already said - just adding a Spot Blue would cure the problem
for some paintings, but there is no systematical workflow.
If Hexachrome is not an option, then one may try to modify the
blue in the image by shifting it towards cyan with less lightness,
    which is better printable.
Of course wrong, but what finally counts is the impression.
A friend of mine is a famous German photographer for calendars
and tourist guide books which contain plenty images with blue skies.
So far he got almost always pleasant print results - by applying
appropriate image processing with Soft Proofing in Photoshop.
    Examples are in (4).
It would be nice, if somebody who is practically working with
Hexachrome or other Multicolor processes could contribute.
    About this question:
I don't know if it is about LAB colors or Hexachrome colors.
The CIE (1931) color space appears mainly by two representations:
    1. CIE xyY Chromaticity diagram (horseshoe)
    2. CIELab = Lab
These are color spaces which contain all possible colors. Spot inks
and primary inks (Pantone, CMYK, Hexachrome CMYKOG) can
    be shown in all diagrams.
    Best regards --Gernot Hoffmann

  • Illustrator CS4, new Pantone color books, color channel issue

Since I installed the new Pantone color books, I've been running in a major issue which will affect our whole production line.
If an Illustrator CS4 file contains a Photoshop CS4 image which is using an "old" Pantone color in a color channel, it cannot be opened and I get an error message "File is unreadable". If I replace the "old" Pantone colour with its new equivalent in the color channel in Photoshop, the file can be opened normally.
In our work environment, this means going through all our images to check which one is using a color channel. A painful and time wasting procedure. Furthermore, if one of our suppliers doesn't have the new color books, they won't be able to open any of the files, both Photoshop and Illustrator, so they have no way to revert back to the old Pantone.
Is there another way to fix this?
    Thank you

More on the Pantone PLUS saga, hoping to get some input from the users of this forum. I find their silence deafening, to say the least. This is a serious issue, that will cost our agency hours and hours of work if it isn't addressed. And we've already wasted hours of troubleshooting and discussions on how we could resolve it.
We're actually testing a workaround: using both the old and the new libraries in Illustrator. After consulting our suppliers, we've learned that this is what they also do. For them, it's a one shot to get the file to print. For us, it means cheating with files that will get edited again in the future. And the Pantone installer removes the old Pantone books from the Adobe folders for a reason which is mentioned on the download page:
The reason that the PANTONE Color Libraries that had been built into Illustrator need to be removed and replaced with the PANTONE PLUS Color Libraries is that, in Illustrator, a PANTONE Color can only have one data point with which it is associated. In the short term, in order to benefit from the new colors and data associated in PLUS, the PANTONE Libraries that are installed with Adobe Illustrator are removed and replaced with the new PLUS Libraries.
    http://www.pantone.com/pages/Pantone/Pantone.aspx?pg=20721&ca=1
I worry this may lead to another bunch of issue, knowing how easily AI files get corrupted. What I need to know is:
What is the exact meaning of the Pantone warning about the "one data point per color?
What are the long term implications of using both Pantone libraries in an Adobe file? Or in the Adobe app?

  • Color Books in Illustrator CS6 (Creative Cloud)

I have recently purchased a MacBook Pro and I am using Creative Cloud to download my programs. I have downloaded Illustrator CS6, and I am trying to replace the new Pantone + color books with the older versions. I have done this in the past on Windows with no issues.
On my Mac I can not find the new document profiles folder so I can change the spot color. I go into the Adobe folder and there is no Illustrator folder in there. Does anyone know where it would be, or why it is not in there?
Mac OS: [user]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator CS6/[lang]/New Document Profiles
Also open to any other workarounds for getting the old color books. I need all of the old color books, not just a few swatches, so workaround 2 in this document below will not help me.
    Document I have been using - http://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/pantone-plus.html
Thanks in Advance! Hopefully someone will have a solution for me :-(

The path for the New Document Profiles should be Mac HD/Users/<yourname>/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator CSX/en_US/ which is a hidden folder in OS10.7 and later. Do a Google search for how to access this folder. The Pantone color books go in Mac HD/Applications/Adobe Illustrator CSX/Presets/Swatches/Color Books.

  • Could not complete your request because specified color book could not be found

I have seen this question on here before but the problem was never dealt with. From what I can tell this is an issue when a specific color from a color book is applied to a channel in Photoshop as a spot color and when the same file is opened on another computer with an instance of photoshop that doesn't share the same color book that said colors were pulled from, it simply won't open. Now I have been to countless pages that stated that I can simply download the new color books such as the Adobe Blog New PANTONE libraries but when I go to the link it suggests it just gives me some pantone color manager which after trying it for 30 days, did not download any missing color books. It seems to be the new pantone + libraries that I need in order to open these files. I also called pantone themselves to see if they could give me an answer so hopefully between here and there someone somewhere can get me those color books i need.
They are apparently free and easy to download. I will probably feel like a moron when someone reveals something obvious I have overlooked but at the very least I just want this problem solved.
    thank you for your time.

  • How to determine color book used in customer-supplied PS file?

Using CS5. I am unable to open two files supplied by our client. These two files pre-date CS6, and were made by a branch of our client in Germany. We are in North America. There are many layers of bureaucracy between us and the actual creators in Germany, so communication is impossible.
An attempt at opening the files results in the error, "Could not complete your request because the specified color book cannot be found".
I am well aware of the workarounds suggested by Adobe for this problem. However, in this case it is NOT POSSIBLE to "work with the file creator", and it is NOT POSSIBLE to use a different version of PS with the correct books.
I have Color Manager, and I have cluttered up my CS5 installation with every likely-looking color book from Manager in the hopes that one of them would be the right one, but to no avail.
So. What do I do? Surely by now Adobe has created some sort of utilty that allows PS to simply tell you WHICH color book is missing so you will know which one to go and get? No?
(Update: I think I may have put this question into the wrong forum, but if so I have no idea how to correct this.)

I think I'm understanding now: While fonts are identified to PS by name, color books are identified to PS by number, and those numbers are not associated with a name that would be embedded into a document the way a font name would be.
    It's appearing to me that
    1) Adobe-registered color books are identified by numbers that any installation of Photoshop will recognize, provided that that PS installation is new (or updated) enough to recognize those numbers;
    2) a 3rd-party number that is unregistered with Adobe will only be known to the specific PS installation which has that specific book; everybody else will only get a number which is unassociated with any color book, and the program will error.
If #2 is correct, how are color-book number conflicts avoided?

  • Colors books do not have colors in numerical oder and typing 133 gets me 330:  is that right?

I was using the Pantone Color Books as I would in CS5.  I expected to see the colors in numnerical order but the numbers jump around plugging in the 7500s randomly.  If I type 133 to get that color in the Uncoated, I get it.  If I type 133 in the Coated, I get 330.  Unless there is a preference for setting this behavior, I think it is a bug.
    2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 8GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM

I was not aware until today that Pantone had put out two sets of color books:  e.g., those marked as PANTONE solid uncoated with another set named Pantone+ Solid Uncoated.  The latter is not in CS5 applications.  It is that set, the Pantone+ set that has the higher number co-mingled with the lower numbers.  Both sets are resident in the Photoshop CS6 color books list.  I am glad about that.
As for the typing in 133 to get 133C and ending up on 330C--I did it at least six times with no luck and quit the application to have dinner.  I have not been able to produce that again.

  • CS6 not opening in CS5  color books error

When I save a PhotoShop CS6 file, the computer we still have running CS5 will not open the file.  The error message is... "Could not complete your request because the specified color book cannot be found."  What are the work arounds for this?

There was not a PMS color channel but there was an alpha channel.  I deleted the channel and had them open the file in CS5 and it opened fine.

  • I need aiCS5 pantone color books. Where can I download?

    Hello
I have searched high and low and cannot find a link to download previous pantone color books before Adobe "brilliantly" decided to mess with everyone by only having the pantone+ books. Which have no use for me now as I still have clients that refer to the older books.
i need them now. Specifically the Process Coated and Uncoated Pantone books.
I am incredibly annoyed by this STUPID DECISION ADOBE MADE!
    Regards

    Okay. I fixed it.
Reason why I asked is because in that thread, it gave the workaround links, which was useless without the color books themselves.
After calling up on buddies, I found someone with Cs5 and got the books from him and added to my library and BOOM it was fixed. That is what I was asking.
Thanks. I solved this one for me.

  • How do I add Pantone Color Books to Illustrator CC?

I'm used to using the Pantone Process color book in illustrator, but it's missing from my Illustrator CC. How can I add it? I had it at work, so I assume it is a standard color book, because my work never paid for anything extra. I see I have a Pantone+ CMYK Coated color book, but the names of the swatches are different from Pantone Solid to Process color book I'm used to.

oh. then you are requesting for the old pantone books?
    here you go
    Dropbox - pantones.zip
let me know when you've got it because i'd like to delete it.

  • Why can't I find certain Pantone plus colors in Illustrator CS6 color books?

Why can't I find certain Pantone plus colors in Illustrator CS6 color books? For example I want to use PMS 2296C, but it is not coming up in the color swatch book in Illustrator.

    Thanks!
I actually just came across the same thing in the meantime.
    And it worked!
If you bought the physical Pantone books, there is a registration/serial number on the back. You can go to Pantone and register it (https://www.pantone.com/pages/MYP_myPantone/mypProductRegistration.aspx)
Then you're able to download the Pantone manager.
There are infact 336 new colors added to the Pantone Plus series. And this is where you need to get them. Once you have them, in Pantone color manager, you go to: File/Export/Adobe Illustrator/sRB. Then restart Illustrator.
Once you go back in, the new 336 colors are available!

  • Illustrator CS6 / CC and previous Pantone color books

Hi all, I've understood that Illustrator CS6 / CC has the new Pantone+ color books, those color books doesn't have CMYK values so the default of rIllustrator CS6 / CC is to use the Lab values when I add a Pantone swatches to my document.  One of my customers, that is a print industry, need to have the old Pantone with CMYK values to maintain the same color rendition on old and continuative jobs. Adobe says that I can load the old Pantone color books from CS5 and change the swatches option so that Illustrator use the CMYK values: http://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/pantone-plus.html  The problem is that this doesn't work for me and for my customer, even if I change the swatches option Illustrator continue to load only the Lab values from the older CS5 Pantone color books... anyone of you has a solution?

I am running into the same issue.  Both links suggested did not work for me.  In a document I created in CS4 (the old document) and opened in CC there is a square with the color Pantone 519U in which it converts to C:67% M:100% Y:30% K:10%.  These are the numbers to be expected.  If I copy the square that is 519U in the old document and paste it in the same old document the color remains the same.
I create a new document in CC (the new document).  From the old document I copy the Pantone 519U square and paste it in the new document.  The resulting square in the new document is a washed out purple.  The new document square converts to C:57.27% M:68.83% Y:35.06% K:13.06%.
Again I followed Workaround 1 in the link.  I obtained the old Pantone Libraries from my CS4 machine so it is not a library issue.  I have also created a new Document Profile where I set the Spot Color to be "Use CMYK values from the manufacturer's process books".  I am seeing the same problem before and after the workaround.

  • I can't search for books or authors on my iphone 6. It says no results found every time. Is there some setting I may have wrong? I have been using my kindle app instead.
