Search displays in a new tab

when I perform a search with bing, the results are displayed in a new tab. I don't want a new tab or window to display the results. This just started happening tonight. My first initial searches for a cause said it was a setting in bing. I wasn't able to find where this setting is. But I don't have the same issue in internet explorer, which leads me to believe its a setting somewhere in firefox. I checked the about:config, the search option is set to false (Pref name = browser.search.openintab)

Okay, I don't know what's going on. Bing and Firefox seem to be playing well today. I've tried several searches and everything is back to normal. Not opening a new tab for searches.
I hope this isn't a sign of some kind of virus. Just seems a really strange type of thing to happen out of the blue.

• Search bar opens in new tab but without focus

I have Firefox operating on 2 computers. On one when I use the search bar the results are in a new tab and that tab gets the active focus. On the other the search bar results are in a new tab, but that tab does not get the active focus. Both computers used to give the search results in a new tab with active focus. What can I do to give the other one active focus on search results?

• When using the search bar, is it possible to get the search results in a new tab?

In the old Google toolbar, it was possible to view the search results in a new tab. Google toolbar is compatible with Firefox 7, so I have to use the Firefox Search Bar. However, it always gets the search results in the current tab. Can this be modified?

Yes. Open a new tab and type or paste ''about:config'' into the location bar, hit enter, and hit enter again to get past the warning. Then paste ''browser.search.openintab'' into the filter box that shows, then double-click on the ''browser.search.openintab'' line to toggle it (it will switch to bold).
If you'd rather an addon just do the above for you and add a menu option for it, try this:
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/searchontab/
Alternatively, you can type a search into the search bar and press ''alt+enter'' instead of just enter to open your search in a new tab.

• Deafult search engine on a new tab-this thread was closed but I have a related question. Once you put the new url in, what then? Close? When tried, did not work

"deafult search engine on a new tab" - this thread was closed but I have a related question. [the word “default” is spelled as it on the thread] Once you put the new url in, what then? Close it? When tried, it did not work. The closest answer is noted here. Instructing to go to about:fig. Specifically, I installed the accuweather add=on and it took over my tab home page - the one that comes up when you click for a new tab. I didn't like it so I clicked the button to remove it and the page went blank. I searched to see out to restore the tab page, tired the reply at this page :
http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/753256?s=install+search+box+on+new+tabs&r=3&as=s
But it did not work. Can some on help me? Just want to know how to make google or some page open on a new tab.
Many thanks

Thanks so much for your support. As I said I am not a professional, so I by chance saw a friend who is and this is what he suggested and it worked.
We googled for an answer and found this site: http://www.guidingtech.com/8004/have-new-tab-page-open-specific-website-firefox-chrome/
It says to Download and install Download and install''' NewTabURL''' and gives instructions on how to. Now when I open the tab it goes to my preferred search page!

• How can I change the search engine in the new tab page?

When I click on the + to open a new tab, I get the new tab page, which displays the previous sites I visit the most. No problem. But in the search window, if I do a search it uses Yahoo. I don't like Yahoo. I would like to change to another search engine, you know, one that's more obscure such as Google. Can anyone help me?

Look at the search bar. Do you see the icon of the current search engine?
Click the arrow next to the icon. you should now see a list of your search
engines. At the bottom, select '''Manage Search Engines.''' Now a window
will open of all your engines. Select the one you want as your default. On
the right of the list you will see a set of up/down arrows. Click the up arrow
until the engine you want is at the top of the list. Then press '''Okay.'''
Once the window is closed, your choice should now be displayed in the
search bar.

• Opening "Search with Google" in New Tab

When you highlight text and right click to choose Search With Google, the results are displayed in the same tab. Can the results be opened in a new tab instead?
Thanks

See, I get that.
Here is what I'm looking for. Say, I'm reading an interesting article in Safari and I see a term that I want to search. I highlight the text and Right click to select 'Search with Google'. The results populate in the same tab. I want the result of that in a new tab so I can continue to read the original article and go the new tab to see what google results are...

• How do I change the website that Firefox automatically defaults to (Yahoo search) when opening a new tab?

Whenever I open a new tab, the new tab opens to a yahoo search page. It used to open to just a blank tab and changed somehow. I've been unsuccessful at changing it back.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
* Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
See:
* [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
* [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
* Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
* Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

• I have a search window on a new tab that I don't want - how do I change it to show me recently closed tabs and other options?

When I installed the Conduit toolbar, I must have changed a setting because I now see the Conduit Apps search on a new tab rather than my former list of recently closed tabs and other options. How do I change what appears on the new tab when I ask for one to be opened?

• How do I delete the search bar in a new tab window so that I can have nine tiles instead of only six?

I used to get nine tiles when I opened a new tab. All of a sudden I only get six with a search bar at the top. All attempts to delete the search bar have failed. I have tried changing the rows and columns in about:config, and I learned about using Ctrl/scroll to shrink the tiles to allow more on the screen. That is a hassle compared to what used to happen. Is there any way to get rid of the search bar, or is there any way to get the nine shrunken tiles to come up when I click on a new tab rather than have to scroll? Thanks for your help.

Thanks, the add on worked great. I even made a donation.

• How to make Firefox open the search results in a new tab instead of on top of already opened page?

When I do the search through the search window on the top right corner, the search results open on top of the page I'm viewing at that moment, instead of in a new tab, so I have to keep remembering to open a new tab before each search. How do I change this, that the results would open up in a new tab?

about:config
set browser.search.openintab to true

• I dont want my search history in a new tab

Why suddenly has firefox decided that it wants my search history to appear in a new tab when I open it. I never asked for this but firefox seems to be going the google path, the take it and choke on it attitude that seems to be the way of this type of service. Why Im i forced to fart around searching for ways to remove this option I never asked for. Why do I have to have this waste of my time forced onto me by some market research moron at firefox who thinks they know what I want. They dont I know what I want I want my choices in how I use the internet and firefox to be my choice. But apparently using firefox is turning my choices over to some failed marketing undergrad trying to make work for themselvs. I dont want to hear bullshit reasons for why it happend or an explination of how I need to spend 20 min reseting everything to get the choices Iv made in my internet use back to how I want them. I dont want my search history appearing in a new tab I want it blank. Its my choice to do this. Dont force changes that I dont want. Where is the list where I can click on what i want and get what I need. Even getting to this stage in finding out was 5min of wading thru irrelevent firefox crap. And explain to me why "Kitten on a box" is an inappropriate username.

hello, please refer to [[New Tab Page – show, hide and customize top sites]] in order to switch the feature off.

• How do i set search to open in new tab?

When I do a "google search" I want it to open in a new tab...how do I set that?

Which search do you mean?
*searching via the location bar (pref: keyword.URL)
*search bar on the Navigation Toolbar
*search bar on the about:home page (pref: browser.search.defaultenginename)
*other search bar (e.g. added by extension)
For the search bar on the Navigation Toolbar you can set the Boolean pref browser.search.openintab to true on the about:config page.
You can also middle-click the search button or menu entry or use Alt+Enter to open the results in a new tab.
For the Google website you can set that via the Google Search Settings page.

• How can I get a new search box for each new tab?

When I open a new tab, I would like a new, dedicated search box that is owned by it. This would help to keep the context preserved when doing searches on multiple, separate topics. Is there a way to configure this or an add-on to do it?

You can do this by using the default about:home page with the Google search and place it in a new tab.
You can try to reset the prefs that do that to see if it'll reverse the action
*Navigate to '''about:config''' in your Address Bar
*Press the "I'll be careful, I promise!" button to proceed
*Search for "browser.newtab.url"
*Right click and Modify it, replace "browser.newtab.url" with '''about:home'''
Is that good?

• Browsers display pages in new tab

My default browser is Chrome but I also use Firefox and Safari on my iMac. Since installation of Yosemite, I have a sporadic problem when the browser starts opening a link or displaying successive pages in a new tab rather than replacing the on-screen page with a new page within the same tab. The only way to stop that is to Quit the browser and relaunch. This occurs from time to time in all 3 of the web browsers I use.
I have gone into the preferences and, where possible, made sure the " open page in new tab" is not enabled. As far as I know, I have not made any changes that would have caused this phenomenon since installing OS X 10.10. Any ideas or thoughts would be welcome.

Hi Brian,
You're not doing anything wrong - it just doesn't work the way most people would expect.
