Search Domain problem
Our domain is called "example_name.local" which is a problem. Leopard won't let me enter a Search Domain with the an underscore in the name. This has been in place since our network was created way back when, so changing that isn't an option.
Is there something I'm missing, or is there maybe a way in Terminal to set this up. I really miss my internal Software Update Server, so any and all help would be appreciated.
Similar problem here at University of Akron in Ohio. We have a Cisco powered network with LEAP and PEAP. Leap is a complete no go. I get an error telling me my password is wrong. PEAP will work for a while but eventually I get an error telling me my network settings are wrong. I am running with a PPC. All of my MacIntel friends are not having this problem.

DNS problem: search domain Ian
Hi,
I had some spyware on my computer but removed it with Macscan. However, I still find the name 'Ian' in my system preferences under Network 'Search Domains'. I can't remove it. Is my Mac infected once more?

Do you use bit-torrent or limewire or that stuff? If so, no telling who was in your computer or what they did. If you run the computer as an administrator, it only makes things worse.
With most malware, you have to invite it into your computer.
Your best bet is to completely reinstall without migrating anything and hope that nothing much was copied from your computer. -
I am trying to set up my new iPad. it asks for a WiFi connection.. I have one..then the next page asks for these things:DHCP,BootP,Ststic then IP address, Subnet Mask, Router, DNS, Search Domain, Client ID then HTTP Proxy I have no idea what any of this means...can someone please help me???
Thank you sooo much. I was so disappointed...I couldn't wait to get started with the new iPad..then ran into the problem. So simple. You made my day. Thank you for your expertise!!

DNS name resolution ignores search domains ??
I have a DNS search domain specified in network prefs for ethernet (and a domain picked up from DHCP). But these appears to be ignored both in apps and on the command line. I find I have to type the fqdn which is a pain.
Looking at /etc/resolv.conf I see 'domain' but no search entries. UNIX docs suggest that domain should allow 'short names' maunally adding explicit search records to /etc/resolve.conf seems to work despite the warning that nothing uses resolve.conf any more. (as on most modern UNIX systems).
Anyone know what is going on? It is a worry that search domains specified in preferences => networks appear to be ignored. It is also a worry that adding config to a supposedly unused file fixes the problem (well at least until it gets overwritten with the next dhcp refresh).
Russell.Hi,
How about the status of the problem now?
DNS request timed out is mainly caused by losing of Network Connectivity, detailed information you may reference the link below(session
7. Loss of Network Connectivity):
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb962024.aspx
If the problem still exits, try command line nslookup /set d2
to turn exhaustive Debugging Mode on(all fields of every packet are printed). And post the result here.
Best Regards,
Eve Wang

I have a BMAS radius authenticating users to a Cisco PIX firewall forInternet access. This process works fine for short periods of time
and then
users begin reporting that they have to try logging in several times
before
they are authenticated. The radius debug screen on the server will at
this
point be denying somewhere around half of the requests it receives
with the
error (access rejected <username> no more search domain). If I unload
and
reload radius.nlm, the problem goes away for a period of time.
Any IdeasI can see from the debug log that RADIUS is receiving a -601 error (user not
found) while attempting to locate the user in eDirectory. This appears to be
an eDirectory problem, rather than a RADIUS problem. The -601 is being
returned to RADIUS from an eDirectory call.
You might have a problem with one or more of the replica servers in your
environment. Try running DSRepair. If that does not fix your problem, then
you will probably have better luck asking in a forum that deals specifically
with eDirectory issues.

Search domain not working on browser
I have a MBP with yosemite installed on it. I have entered the search domains in the network system preferences and can see that these are correctly entered in /etc/resolv.conf as well as 'scutil --dns'. When I ping an internal host with just the short name (m-hris), I get the FQDN (m-hris.xxxx.com) back and the ping goes through fine. When I try to load the page in a browser (chrome / firefox / safari), I get nothing. When I run 'curl m-hris', I get the response back.
Any help on what's wrong with the browser resolution? Using the FQDN in the browser works fine.I am having similar problem with search function on my 4S
Some time it works.........Recycling the power does not help
After I disabled bluetooth, it seems to be working. -
Search domain question.
I keep having problems with Entourage. It shows connected but does not send or receive mail. I have been fixing it by going into the search domain settings under network and adding my domain lacrossefootwear.net. How do I get this to be populated when the user boots up there systems? I notice that this setting is removed after a couple of days or so and I have to go back to the same people and reset it. Is this a xserve server setting or a file on the individual computers that needs to be modified?
I tout the Java community all the time. Honestly, this is the first time you all have let me down ;)
Anyway, the issue with the code is that the init method is called twice (once by the applet environment and once in my code). This was causing the JTrees/SplitFrames to be added twice.
Thanks for nothing! ;) -
Configure DNS & Search Domains in TCP/IP Settings via Terminal?
HI Folks,
I've been having a long standing battle trying to find out what is wrong with my machine, it's been running like a dog for a while and having recently added 2 new Macs to our network i recall that there was a setting missing - namely within the TCP/IP settings for the Built In Ethernet, the DNS Servers and Search Domains are not configured on my machine, but are on the new ones i've added (mine was my new foray into Macs so i maybe set it up wrong!)
However the main problem occurs when i try to edit the settings for the above from within System Preferences -> Network, i get a spinning beach ball of doom and have to Force Quit. Yet oddly i can access the setting fine when i am at home and not connected to the AD of the Windows Server Environment... which makes me think the events could be linked.... i thought it may have been Parallels and it's NAT settings, but given that all works perfectly at home i'm not so sure. Hence, as a process of elimination i'd like to try and get the correct settings for Search Domain etc to see if it helps, before i flatten the machine and reinstall Tiger completely!
The main issues i've been having with the machine can be found here:

I did try and use different locations for work and home, but sadly i ended up with a spinning beach ball of doom when i tried to change the location at work, so it was a slightly pointless exercise!!!

balaOh boy! Let me see what's going on. Are you using the VZW Cloud or the BUA app? Please try downloading the VZW Cloud app if you dont already have it. And once downloaded. Tap the 3 bars in the upper corner and go down to "TOOLS", then tap "RESTORE CONTENT". That should do it!

what cause searching network problem after updating iphone 6 from iOS 8.1.2 TO iOS 8.1.3?
SSince Apple does not support downgrading the iOS I suggest you start a new question that gives a good title to a specific problem. Then in the body of the thread describe the problem in detail, tell us what steps you have tried so far to correct the problem, what happened, and what error messages you received.

What is the "Search Domains" setting?
In WiFi settings, what is the purpose of the "Search Domains" setting?
This doesn't seem to be covered in the user guide and I couldn't turn up anything when searching several forums. The search domains you enter in your Network preferences are automatically appended to names you type in Internet applications. For example, if you specify the search domain apple.com, typing “store” in your web browser takes you to store.apple.com.
There's no real need to change that setting, though. -
Search Domains = Ian?
Hi.
I was just changing my DNS Servers to use Google's Public DNS http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/index.html in System Preferences>Network>AirPort>Advanced>DNS
When I noticed listed under Search Domains (to the right of DNS Servers) the name "Ian". It's lightly greyed out and you can't click and press minus to remove it. It also appears in my girlfriends MacBook and in my iPhone settings, so I imagine it is some auto network setup.
I have read on an archived thread someone else who had the same thing:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1816266&tstart=0
Should I be concerned?I believe I may be being a little silly, the Ian may of course be LAN in lowercase.
Ian lan just a little height difference there. -
FABridge cross-domain problem?
I try to html and FABridge.js and swf from other domain site.
Like below:
http://192.168.1.1/test,html :
<script src="
http://192.168.1.32/FABridge.js"></script>
<EMBED SRC="
http://192.168.1.32/Test.swf"
Downloading has succeed.
However, cannot get object in javascript program.
var root = FABridge.flash.root();
I recived error like this
FABridge.flash has no properties
Is it something like a cross-domain problem?
thanks. It looks like I've solved it. The parent domain was
sub-domain and I was leaving off the "
http://" for the allowDomain argument. Once I
added it, the swfs work. -
On my home wireless network, the iphone 5 won't let me enter the IP address, subnet mask and router info. I was able to enter the DNS and Search Domains. How do I open up those fields?
Apparently the router is not sending the info to the iphone. How can I make that happen?

Hi everyone,
I have recently upgraded my Macbook from Snow Leopard to Lion, and since then I have some trouble with my local network.
I work in a local network, so I have set up a local DNS and search domain to let me use local domain like google.com.in
Everything worked fine in Snow Leopard but with Lion I cannot reach anymore all the *.in domains, I only can reach simple domain like "myserver"
For the moment I've found a workaround by adding all my domains in the /etc/hosts file but it's a pity because I work with tons of domains.
Here it is my scutil --dns cmd :
