Search e-mails by subject in ios7

Previously, in ios6, we were able to search through e-mails and limit the search to:
     To:
     From:
     Subject:
     All:
Under ios7, we no longer have that ability, and searches only return results based on "To." How can we go back to the old method of searching?  This is not an upgrade to ios7, but rather a downgrade since we have limited ways of searching.  A real upgrade would be to allow us to perform a more refined search by allowing us to enter multiple search terms in multiple fields.

  • Search in Mail and iCal lost?

    Mail issue:
I have just upgraded to Leopard and find that I am no longer able to search "entire message" using Mail!! This is a terrible loss of functionality! Is anyone else having this problem or have I destroyed my Mac? I can only search "from" "to" and "subject."
    iCal issue:
Search simply does not work AT ALL! I type something into the search field, even the title of an event I can see directly on the screen, but absolutely no results come up when the search window at the bottom of the iCal screen opens. What is going on??? The Leopard updates are WORTHLESS to me if I lose search capability; in fact I would uninstall immediately and ask for a rebate!
    Thanks!

I am having the exact same issue in Mail. I get no results using the "entire message" option.
I NEED this to work as I rely on it multiple times a day.
Anyone know how to fix this?

  • Search in Mail stopped working

Suddenly, search in Mail has stopped working. I can type in a simple word like "we" (without the quotes, of course) and nothing appears in the list. It doesn't matter if I choose a specific mailbox or "All Mailboxes," or "From" "To" "Subject" or "Entire Message," nothing appears.
I just now selected a word from the body of one of my incoming messages, "choosing," and pasted it into the search box. When I click on "Subject" it finds two messages, "Congratulations on choosing to gain..." and "Choosing the right opportunity for you" but it finds nothing when I click on "Entire Message!"
Something is obviously messed up here.

I was able to solve all my problems with searching in Mail with a simple process. I backed up my entire machine with Time Machine, then booted from my OS X install / restore DVD. Then selected restore from time machine backup, it rewrote my entire hard drive with the backup from time machine and upon booting back up, Mail reindexed all messages and my computer was exactly how I left it before I backed it up.
The problems I was having with mail included:
    Unable to search 'entire message'
Unable to search 'entire message' when a specific inbox was selected
Able to search messages from spotlight in the Finder, but then they would disappear.
The spotlight index not being updated when new mail came in, making it unsearchable.
Plus a slew of other search in Mail problems.
Backing up and then doing a full restore from Time Machine solved all the problems.
    Hope this helps,
    Vince

  • Searching in Mail is slow

I've just upgraded to mac os 10.4.3 on my powerbook G5 and I'm using Mail.app 2.0.5 for the first time. I've read a lot on this forum about how the application is slow in importing mail especially from an IMAP account (which is what I have). I was wondering if anyone has noticed that the search feature is also EXTREMELY SLOW. I'm only searching my inbox in either the subject or entire message, but it's taking minutes if not tens of minutes to search those fields. Search in the To and From are quite fast. In comparison the search in Mail 1.3.9 was nearly instantaneous, which was why I switched to mail in the first place. Is this a temporary affliction until Mail 2.0.5 indexes the messages? I assumed it did this when it took 4 hours to import my mailboxes but apparently not. Thanks in advance for your help.

Guys I might have a fix for you.
If you locate your Mail folder inside your User Account Library you will find a document called "Envelope Index" - it could be quite a large file.
    Quit out of Mail
Move the Envelope Index file to the desktop (don't delete in case something goes wrong) and then re-open Mail again. It will start to build a new index. Depending on how much email you are storing and how large the previous index file was will decide how long this re-build takes. You will notice that comparing the two files shows that the new file can be much much smaller. Also I hope this makes thing run a lot faster too. Doing this periodically does no harm and don't be freaked out about how many emails it is indexing. It can take quite some time depending on how much you have.
    Hope this helps.
    Gerry.

  • Shockingly bad search in Mail

hi all. i have posted on this once in a while when i try a search and get totally frustrated spending a couple of minutes trying to find an email on my desktop. then i inevitably switch the search to Sparrow which i downloaded and set up about a year ago and - boom - immediate results. at one point i think i trashed some files on the desktop app and i also think i rebuilt the database and/or tried a couple of other things and i am wondering if there is a set of accepted standard for totally UNSTICKING this portion of the program which appears to be not working.
i /also/ have sparrow downloaded to my IPhone and the results are much better there but with the new iOS7 upgrade Sparrow has been freezing and it is unlikely there will be a fix for this.
if i cannot search mail reliably on my iPhone or my computers i am not sure why i am using the program in the first place and would welcome suggestions for alternative methods. i have a relatively large amount of email and a relatively elaborate setup using IMAP with a large number of accounts but if i could get a realiable search it would be worthwhile changing over.
is this a documented issue with Mail and people just live with it?
can i run a search in the new Spotlight function on the iPhone and in Spotlight on the Macs and get reliably better results? if so, is this documented anywhere so that i can see if there are other things i can do to optimize mail search? this has been a bottleneck we have been working around for four years now.
i have an iphone, laptop (Mavericks) and desktop (Lion) and would dearly love to solve this workflow brick wall on all or at least a couple of my devices.
    TIA

  • HELP: ManagedClient: Search Entire Mail - Spotlight

    hi there,
after the 10.5.5 update it is not possible to search entire mail content anymore. only "From" "To" and "Subject". i want to reindexing spotlight for a managed client, "mdutil -E /" does this only locally, not for the managed user.
any ideas how to force spotlight to reindexing for a managed client (serverbased userfolder)
Spotlight on the userfolder server and the sharepoint is activated.
    thanks,
    Philipp

    Hey vincemomo,
If you are having an issue with Spotlight searches on your MacBook Pro not returning the expected results, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -

I recently upgraded to the latest version of FF and now when using a webmail client I am routinely logged out when I try to search e-mail. It works in IE, but I don't like or want to use IE.

  • After installing Lion on my Mac Pro, search in mail is not working.

I can run the search successfully in spotlight, or on my macbook air, but when searching in mail on the mac pro, it seems to return random results. Can anyone shed some light?
I have tried multiple test cases and the mac Pro from withi

I ran into the same problem with only some messages (if any at all) showing up in the searches in Mail. For an example, I have over 100 messages from Netflix within all my mail folders (trash included) but when I search for anything containing "netflix" it would only pull up 2 messages from my trash folder on two random dates. This was the case for ANY searches I was trying to pull up, not just for netflix emails.
I spoke to an iOS Senior Advisor who did a screen share with me (because he had never heard of the problem previously) and after reviewing the issue, he said he will be taking this up to the engineers.
Here is what fixed the problem for me:
    1. Enable Indexing
Open Terminal, and type the following:  sudo mdutil -i on /
If it asks for your password, type it in and hit return.
Re-open mail. If this didn't fix anything, then you will need to re-index:
    2. Re-indexing HD
Go to System Preferences, Spotlight, click on the Privacy tab, click on the + to add the entire Macintosh HD to the list of "Prevent spotlight from searching these locations" and then remove the Macintosh HD by clicking the - button.
Once you've done this is will automatically start re-indexing in spotlight. This took about 90 minutes on my computer, but once it was done, I re-opened mail and it was working properly again.
If you still run into issues, I've heard that in Mail, clicking on "Mailbox" then "Rebuild" can sometimes fix the issue. Let me know if any of those steps worked for you!

  • Need tips on how to use "Search" in Mail

Didn't get a response in the mail forum,
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=349304&tstart=0

    ok, did it.
to tell you the truth, the search in mail started working again after the first code of line was entered even though terminal gave me the error message.
But I went ahead and typed in this other line of code and my password. I can hear it indexing in the background, about how long will it take on a 450mhz cube?

  • How to get mail app to search junk mail?

Is it normal behavior for the search function in mail to exclude junk mail? One of the main reasons I might search for a message is to check whether something I was expecting got sent to junk or not.
Or to put it more simply: Is there a way to include the junk folder in searches?

Mail ▹ Preferences ▹ General ▹ When searching all mailboxes, include results from: Junk

  • Remote Search in Mail.app

I have an interesting problem I can't figure out how to solve easily. I have about 26GB of old emails on my older MacBook Pro that I search through occasionally. I now have a MacBook Air that I would like to use as my primary "roaming" computer (relegating my MBP to be my work desktop). I would like to have search access to all my old emails but don't want to waste 26GB out of the 120GB SSD on something I only occasionally search.
Is there any way for me to search through these old emails "remotely" from my MBA's Mail.app (mbox files would be stored on the MBP or another "server")? Or any other ways around this problem (eg, can I save a smaller Spotlight index locally on my MBA but not the full files)? And please don't tell me "ssh + grep". That's not very Mac-like.

the ONLY way to search mail messages from Mail is by importing them into Mail. no way around that. but you can search them from finder without importing. nothing needs to be done for that. just mount the remote computer via file sharing and do a finder or spotlight search and it will search on the remote computer when you switch the search location to shared. to restrict the search to Mail only preface the search string with kind:message

  • Search in mail not working

    Hi there
I've just migrated my MacBook Pro across to the new machines, so have moved to Mavericks as well.
Historically, searching in Mail has been wonderfully simple. Type whatever you want and it lists what it finds. But Mavericks just doesn't come up with the results. - If I type in my name and "entire message" it gives me some but not all of my signatured messages.
    - If I type in a name I know I've emailed in the past it will come up with no messages.
Have I got a setting I need to change over??
    Appreciate your feedback.

First, follow all the instructions in this support article. If the problem isn't solved that way, see below.
Boot in safe mode. This will cause certain caches maintained by the system to be rebuilt.
Safe mode is much slower to boot than normal.
When the login screen appears, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test. There's no need to log in while in safe mode.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.

  • WF mail's subject replaced by task name!

    Hi all,
I'm facing a very annoying and urgent problem on ECC 6 about mail sent
    via workflows.
In some cases the mail's subject (work item text) is replaced with the task
name (in SCOT) and if I access the workflow log everything is ok and the
subject is the one I decided in SWDD.
I never got this problem on the dev. system but in production it's appening daily.
Any help would be very appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
    Angelo

Translation tools for workflow has improvement possibilities, yes...
I think if you already have the task in a request the translation will be transported, but I am not sure. Perhaps you have to manually include the translations.
There have been threads about translating before in this forum. I am sure a transaction for translating has been mentioned in those - I just can't remember what it is.

  • Mail app subject line errors

    Hello all.
I subscribe to e-mails sent by the Government of Canada. In Apple Mail, the subject line is garbled, as follows:
=?ISO-8859-1?Q?Reminder - Briefing on the Prime Minister's Visit to France for the G-8 Sum?=          mit and to Greece
Is there any way to correct this so Mail displays the correct subject line, without weird coding and font problems? The problem only occurs with messages from this sender in particular. Outlook handles these messages without any problem, but I prefer to use Mail.
    Many thanks for any advice.

@Baron875, your answer is not entirely correct. Your method does NOT save all the original data. The original date of the message is changed to the date and time that you edited it! For business, this fixes one problem but creates another!! The only real answer to this question, which has been frustrating me ever since I switched to Mac, is to go back to Microsoft Outlook where it is simple to change the subject line... something that should be a no-brainer function for any mail client programmer. I really like Mail overall, but some of these idiotic shortfalls drive me nuts. I am becoming more and more convinced that Apple does NOT have the brightest programmers, as some people like to think.

  • Search in Mail doesn't show results after Migrating

If I search for a word or an adr. in Mail nothing show up. Unless I've just read the mail. Like that newly read email is the only one being searched in ..?
This happened after moving my user account to a new MacPro with Migration Assistant.
(first a clean install of 10.7 on a new disk in bay 1 on the "new" MacPro and updating to 10.7.5 - Starting up from the new disk with my "old" HD in bay 2 on the new machine and using Migration Assistant to move all my data over to the new disk in bay 1)
Same Mac OSX version, but MacPro version from 1.1 to 3.1
    Also Spotlight doesn't show results.
Is there a way to make a new "search cache" or whatever that overview file is called ...
Suddenly now, when not getting any search results, I see how much I use search in Mail and Spotlight ... !
    Thanks

Try posting this in the 10.7 Mail forum. You'll get more help there.
