Search engine broken??

Just did a search for *Directory Service*, sorted by date and got an unending list of the same posts (sample below). Anyone else?

Ever since I installed Leopard I've noticed this happening more and more - especially when I install an external hard drive or unplug my ethernet line - this is plainly weird and never happened under Tiger - the temperature shoots up to 84° also - I always to a restart to get rid

It seems that the Discussions search is returning many posts two or more times, and occasionally returning one post a very large number of times. You can tell if two seemingly identical posts are in fact the same one by looking at the unique messageID on the URL of each entry.

• Is the forum search engine broken?

Is it just me or is the search engine in this forum broken? I have tried to search for "Java","System","PrintService" etc. I everytime I get 0 results...

"Broken"? No. "Not very good"? That's a fair description.
Maybe the problem is your search. Have you tried different combinations?
Take "Java" out of the search. This IS a Java forum, after all.
What does "PrintService" bring back on its own?

• Reinstall or edit broken search engine setting

The Creative Commons Beta search engine addon seems to be broken for me in Firefox, taking me to a 404 page each time. If I try reinstalling it from the Creative Commons site I get a popup message: "Firefox could not install the search plugin from "http://search.creativecommons.org/ccsearch.xml" because an engine with the same name already exists."
Is there any way to remove this plugin so that I can try reinstalling it? It's not listed under Tools > Addons. The Firefox help pages only tell me how to hide search engines, not how to actually remove them.
I'm using Firefox 34.0.5 under Windows 7, everything apparently up to date.

Hello TimTylor, with CLOSED firefox, seek for an .xml file of the searchplugin in searchplugins folder inside Firefox profile folder and delete it manually.
(All default search engines plugins exist in the "browser\searchplugins" folder in Firefox program folder or Firefox installation directory, but all custom search engines plugins exist inside firefox profile folder:-))
thank you

• I've been using firefox for years, and i'm very upset with the 34.0.5 update's changes to the search engine feature.

hi,
this new search engine is incredibly convoluted, and i put some real thought into why it's bad
the dropdown menu contains more things than it used to. previously only a list with icons and titles and a link to options...now only icons (with no options to include text), a reiteration of your terms and current engine, separators between each icon, and loads of potential results from auto-complete (which i disabled immediately). though taking up less space by forcing icons only, more things were added, giving the user more clutter in less space.
having a permanent default search engine is counterproductive to the feature's previous nature. this was supposed to be there so i can quickly change between websites i'm searching, now it's been equated to the search feature in the address bar (which i am now also unable to change the function of on the fly, as changing the search engine used would also change the address bar's search function - perhaps influenced this change?). it's now faster for me to type the website i want followed by my terms into the address bar, just like when i use chrome. this feature was one of the largest reasons why i preferred firefox over chrome
i would commonly leave my search engine on merriam-webster when writing papers, wikipedia when doing research, etc. and now i have to click which one i want. every time. with every search that isnt default, unless i change my default through the options constantly. this is incredibly tedious. most irritating of all is the inability to use hotkeys to select my search engine, the lack of ctrl+up/down. previously i wouldnt have to use my mouse often at all, which is imperative for laptop users
so yeah, ive put some real thought into this, and i'm very unhappy. this greatly hinders my browsing experience. heard the saying "if its not broken, dont fix it"? ive been using chrome in conjunction with firefox for a few years now, and it's been painful to see mozilla attempt to imitate it. i will be using chrome more often in the absence of this feature (i am right now, even). i'm also upset that i was unable to find a public message boards hosted by mozilla to voice my opinion, and i apologize to whoever customer support employee that (probably didnt) read this - please pass it on to the devs and tell them internet people are angry and said they fucked up. thanks.
and i beg you, please give us the option to revert back to the old interface in future updates, or at least an official extension overriding this awful update. i realize i cant request this really, and yes im upset, yes im sending an angry email - thats because this is something i use often and i am passionate about it
sincerely,
pissed

You can use the Tab key to select a search engine on the bottom bar and press Enter to use the search engine to do the search.
*https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Search+bar
In the current Firefox 34 release there is a new "one-off" search bar.
This search bar doesn't show the name of the search engine and a logo.
You can type one letter to make a drop-down list appear where you can see suggestions and see the used search engine and that also has bar at the bottom where you can select other search engines that are enabled via the Search tab in Options/Preferences.
You can use the Tab key to select one of the other available search engines and press the Enter key to search with the selected search engine.
Click the search engine icon and click "Change Search Settings" to open the Search tab in Options/Preferences (positioned between Tabs and Content) to select the default search engine and select which search engines to show in the search bar drop-down list that opens when you start typing search terms.

• How doI stop it opening the internet with Creative Commons and use another search engine e.g. Google?

When I first go to the internet with Firefox, then want to type in what I am looking for, it opens with Creative Commons. I would MUCH rather it opened with a search engine such as Google. How do I change to this? N.B I am using a Mac.

morflorian wrote:
if the migth-be protocol has no handler, assume it is just a search engine request).
The main problem with that would be that Firefox would fail to notify the user in case of a valid protocol that's not associated with a program, and would instead send the URL as a search query. Firefox would appear broken, when in fact the problem is with the external application. That's far from desirable. This isn't an uncommon occurrence with externally-handled protocols like magnet.
Also, I don't think the vast majority of people are likely to run into this problem. Even those that do can easily work around it, by placing the search words first (e.g. gingerbread intitle:recipes), or by starting the query with a search engine keyword (e.g. g date:1 heartbleed aftermath). To assign a keyword to a search engine, click the icon in the search bar and choose Manage Search Engines.
If you feel very strongly about this, head over to the #firefox IRC channel and see if you can find someone familiar with the File Handling component. If they think this change is a good idea, you could then file a bug report.

• I was suffered by the addo Gamevance TextLinks or XUL Cache which converts the google search engine results to the advertisements. And I'm unable to uninstall tha addon. Can you help me how to do please?

I installed one software from a game and that insatlled one addon to mozilla firefox. Then all the google search engine results are changed to the advertisements. I was unable to uninstall/remove that addon. May I know how to do please?

I did some googling and found alot of topics from you on this issue, to me it simply seems like on of the connectors is broken or loose.

• Flash Search Engine SDK

Hi Folks,
I´ve got some questions concerning the lately released
Flash Search Engine SDK.
Well, what I know so far is it allows spiders from Google or
Yahoo to read out the text used in .swf files.
But how does it really work? For example:
If you avoid using flash on a website the normal way to get
an acceptable page rank is to use things like title, keywords which
are repeatedly used in continuous text, h1/h2 tags, file names,
link names, ...
But which of those things apply on the .swf files as well?
Are link names recognized as related to their target and by
their content?
Do keywords defined in the head apply on the .swf files?
Do the spiders see dynamic generated text inside the .swf
files (text you read out of external files, xml files, ...)
I hope you can give me some useful information on how it
works exactly because I couldn´t find any useful confirmed
information on the internet so far.
Thanks beforehand.

The spiders see ALL text on all pages. They actually run a
specialized version of the player, and they go through and catch
any text. They don't catch text that is invisible, off the display
list, or off the stage, and they only catch text that is still text
(so no broken apart text). They do see the dynamically-generated
text, but the specialized player does not allow the loading of
files, so if it is XML-generated, they don't catch it. A caveat
there, the google spider will mark the XML file that you try to
load, and will crawl and cache it separately.
Also, the text does not have size or color information, so
weighting information visually does not work.
Google has not released anything (even to the Adobe devs
working on this) about how the information is getting weighted.

covers all of this information and more in detail:

• Can I use the search engine and run a web application under the same iPlanet 6.0 virtual server?

I've got an iPlanet 6.0 SP2 virtual server with the search engine enabled, which was tested and working. I then deployed a web application to it (mapped to "/"), and the web application works fine but now the search functionality is completely broken. Browsing to /search results in a directory index being displayed. Is there some trick to getting the two working together? I tried shuffling NameTrans directives around, but can only get either the search or the web app working, not both.

Ok, I'm going to answer my own question now...
The issue has been resolved after some additional experimentation on my part. There were two causes for my problem:
1. The NameTrans directives in obj.conf are in the wrong order when Java and Search are enabled from the administration interface.
Here's the admin server generated obj.conf I started with initially, when the web application was working, but requests to the URI "/search" returning a 404 error:
<Object name="default">
NameTrans fn="NSServletNameTrans" name="servlet"
NameTrans fn="pfx2dir" from="/search-ui" dir="/usr/local/iWS-6.0/plugins/search/ui" name="es-internal"
NameTrans fn="pfx2dir" from="/mc-icons" dir="/usr/local/iWS-6.0/ns-icons" name="es-internal"
NameTrans fn="pfx2dir" from="/manual" dir="/usr/local/iWS-6.0/manual/https" name="es-internal"
NameTrans fn="es-search-nametrans" from="/search"
NameTrans fn="NSServletNameTrans" name="servlet"
NameTrans fn="document-root" root="$docroot"
</Object>
Here's my obj.conf now, which works perfectly:
<Object name="default">
NameTrans fn="pfx2dir" from="/search-ui" dir="/usr/local/iWS-6.0/plugins/search/ui" name="es-internal"
NameTrans fn="pfx2dir" from="/mc-icons" dir="/usr/local/iWS-6.0/ns-icons" name="es-internal"
NameTrans fn="pfx2dir" from="/manual" dir="/usr/local/iWS-6.0/manual/https" name="es-internal"
NameTrans fn="es-search-nametrans" from="/search"
NameTrans fn="NSServletNameTrans" name="servlet"
NameTrans fn="document-root" root="$docroot"
</Object>
The "servlet" NameTrans directive needs to go below all others which map a URI to a function or directory (but before "document-root"), or they break. This is consistent with the iPlanet documentation on NameTrans, but the admin server doesn't get it right!
2. The developer who wrote the web application uploaded a directory named "search" in the root of his application, which caused the server to display a directory index of "/search", instead of executing the search function. I believe this issue is covered in an iPlanet knowledge base article.

• Flash search engine setup

What is the best way to set up a site completely done in
Flash so that
search engines will index it? Preferably a way that will not
be costly to my clients.

The spiders see ALL text on all pages. They actually run a
specialized version of the player, and they go through and catch
any text. They don't catch text that is invisible, off the display
list, or off the stage, and they only catch text that is still text
(so no broken apart text). They do see the dynamically-generated

• Creating a Search engine question

HI,
I have a question. I built a search engine for my site to just rip through my DB and show the records.
Currently if someone enters "big white dog", my app does an sql statement using LIKE and searches for '%big white dog%'. This is ok but I have a few problems.
1) It should search for big AND white AND dog. So how do i break up the string into separate words.
2) Currently if someone types in ring, things that say bearing are coming up. I tried doing LIKE '% ring %' (with the spaces) but if the word ring is the first word in the record that im scanning, it wont come up.
Basically I need some help from someone that has done this before. Im not looking for entire search engine code. Just need someone to explain the technique and then I can get it done.
Thanks so much for your time.

ok, so now i have the string broken apart but this is my last and final problem.
record1 = 'Wheel bearing';
record2 = 'ring - diamond';
Lets say the above two records are in my db. If i search for like %ring% both records come up, which is wrong. ONly the second record should come up. If i change it to like % ring % it doesnt bring up anything because there is no space before ring in record2. I have tested this on many search engines and they get this to work, but I dont know how they do it.
Any suggestions???
THanks

• How do I add multiple scripts from search engines to my meta tag properties?

I currently have copied the goolge script for website varification and analytics, etc and pasted it into my meta tag properties dialog box. There is no problem as far as Google varifying the page. However, I would like to copy Bing's search engine script into my meta tag in addition to Googles script. How do I go about doing this? Do I hit the return on my keyboard under the ending of Googles script, then paste in the Bing script?
The the last part of the Google script ending in this:
</script>
(paste new script from Bing here?)
Will this cancel out each other and cause problems?
Can someone walk me through this process, because Bing's search engine will not varify my site through two of the three other methods.
Ben

Adding a script after the closure of previous script is the way to go i.e. right after the </script> tag.
So it should look something like below:
<script>
Google's script
</script>
<script>
Bing's script
</script>
Cannot comment on one interfering with the other since it really depends on what exact code is there in the scripts. Google and Bing help resources will be able to help more with this.
Thanks,
Vikas

• How do I delete a toolbar that was added by a plugin? Plug-in's been uninstalled, but the toolbar is still there and any new tabs open on their search engine (even though I have Tab Mix set to open tabs on a duplicate page). Help?

Running Firefox on Windows XP3. I installed a plugin from Savevid.com, which they now require. (I've used that site for at least a year with no problem ever.) Everything was fine but it added a toolbar to my browser, and it seems to have reset Firefox somehow so that any new tab opens on "Searchqu", some low-rent search engine. I uninstalled the plug-in altogether, but the toolbar is still there, and I can't make the reset on the search engine go away. I use Tab Mix Plus (also never had this problem before with it), but no matter what I do, the tabs will not open to anything other than searchqu. (Tab Mix has the option to open to a duplicate tab - what it was using BEFORE all this - but changing that no longer has any effect.)
Anyone know how to deal with a problem like this?

Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window or otherwise make changes.

• Error message trying to install new search engines

I am running Firefox 19.0.2 installed yesterday on a new desktop PC at the office. (Old PC failed to boot on Monday.) I have completed most of my customization without difficulty. However, when I try to install new search engines, it doesn't seem to matter which one, I get a pop-up error message:
"Sorry, you need a Mozilla-based browser (such as Firefox) to install a search plug-in."
I had no problems installing new search engines under Firefox 16 3rd quarter of last year when I started this job. Why am I unable to install search engines in FF 19?

Hello lafritz65, Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.
Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"
If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.
thank you

• I want name on address bar goes to home page, not search engine

Just today I hooked up a new modem/router that I purchased at a WIndstream store. I have been browsing the internet for years with Firefox. I have changed the keyword.url setting in my Firefox configuration (see https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/833252#answer-197476) so that the new version would act like the old version and go directly to the webpage when the name was typed in the address bar. For example: when I type in "windstream" (no ".net" or".com") I would go directly to windstream' home page.
However, when I hooked up my new modem/router I my browser is hijacked and goes to a Windstream search page. I have tried everything from re-installing Firefox, re-changing the "keyword.url" setting, I even tried the Firefox ad-on here (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/browse-by-name/).
All to no avail......there is something that has changed by adding Windstream's hardware and connecting to their network that will not allow me to use this function of Firefox.
Nothing else changed, but a new piece of hardware.....
Changed keyword.url to : http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q=
Re-installed Firefox after cleaning all history and cookies.
Tried the add-on "Browse by name"
Wasted my time calling Windstream tech support.
Changed to openDNS
Tried to disable the feature through Windstream's web page, but then it just happens with the new search engine.

Opt-out of Windstream's search service: Type in something to get their sneaky web search page to come up, then click the tiny link at the bottom right "about this page". That sends you to a page where you can opt-out of their service.
To opt-out from their "valuable" sneaky service, you have to choose to opt-in to another search service.
You have to do this with each browser. And it still sends you to your search engine's results page, not to your URL the way you might want it to.
I would rather the default be to allow me to opt-in if I choose to, not have to jump through hoops to find out how to opt-out. It's taken me weeks to discover this. Annoying!

• Reset the "awesome bar" (address bar) search engine

I had to install some crapware, and it made me install snap.do. This was a mistake. I have completely removed snap.do, so I think, but it has injected itself somehow within firefox. I have removed it entirely, cept for when i type anything in the address bar for a search, it currently only searches http://search.snapdo.com/?st=ds&q= its driving me quite batty. Please read my things I have done before you post.
Things I have done..
- Switched the "search box" search engine.
I've tried to switch it to something else like yahoo, and then switch back to google, then type in the ADDRESS BAR, still defaults to snap.do. I've also tried all sorts of things, as I believe since firefox 23 whatever you have selected in the search box, will default for the address bar, in my case.. no.
- keyworld.url or any about:config search for snap or snapdo or snap.do or *
Listen, this has been gone since firefox 23. I'm running version 27.0.1, ITS NOT THERE DONT SUGGEST THISSS FKJALSDFLKAJSD. I've also tried the keyworld.url hack. First time I tried there was a snap.do keyword and i was like "EFFFIN AAAA!". But after a restart, snapdo still took over.
- Firefox>help>troubleshoot>reset
I'll punch you in the face if you even remotely suggest this, i've done it 329049320 times ;)
- Malware/antivirus/dafjkdsj tool.
Unless it directly removes snap.do dont even tempt me.
- uninstall/reinstall
Ok.. c'mon, you think I havent tried this?
-add/remove programs
rly?
Ok so you see my frustration here? One more list..
Things I will not do..
- Delete my firefox profile.
I'd just really rather not, as history is how I browse some stuff. and well other things as well, I mean in the end, if i must i must.
But if anyone has any other ideas on how i can force firefox to a search engine please let me know, and i will be your friend ;D

Cor-el has suggested to create a new profile, and as I can see in your initial question posting, it was stated that if you had to, you would do it. So, if you could please do - it would be appreciated.
Something I suggest is a clean reinstall, however that is something you would not like obviously but I will enter those instructions here anyways so you can look over it.
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
#*Windows:
#**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
#**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Installing Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.
<b>WARNING:</b> Do not run Firefox's uninstaller or use a third party remover as part of this process, because that could permanently delete your Firefox data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. <u>These cannot be recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device!</u>
Please report back to see if this helped you!
Thank you.
