Search for exact phrase

(Adobe Reader XI, version 11.0.06, Windows 7 Professional SP1, 32-bit)
I'm reviewing a PDF document that has various occurrences of mixed case "plug-in", "plug in", and "plugin", sometimes the 'p' and/or 'i' is capital.  I cannot find a way to make Reader XI search for and match ONLY the following 7 characters:
plug in
That's p-l-u-g-space-i-n.  When performing a case-insensitive search for <plug in> (I'm using < and > as delimiters just for the rest of this message posting, can't use quotes as you'll see shortly) it matches <plug in>, of course, but it also matches <plug-in>.  I don't want all those <plug-in> matches because a hyphen is not a space.  (There are LOTS of matches on <plug-in> and they bury the few matches of <plug in>.  So I gotta search this big list to find the few correct matches...and then wonder if I missed any.)
In the advanced search option it says to use quotes to make Reader search for an exact phrase or words.  Well, when using quotes in the search box they are not delimiters of an exact phrase, they are part of the search.  For example, as a sanity check I did a search on the eight characters quotation-p-l-u-g-i-n-quotation <"plugin">.  That should match all occurrences of <plugin> because I enclosed it in quotation marks, right?  The search for <"plugin"> produces one match - the single instance of <"Plugin"> in the entire document...so the quotes are part of the search, they don't delimit an exact phrase.
I'm sure the error is on my part, I just don't know what I'm missing here.  Please help if you can.
thanks,
Steve T.

Thanks for the quick response, Gilad D.  I tried those options before posting this question, and again about 5 minutes ago just to be sure.  I tried them both together and both separately, but no joy - searching for <plug in> still matched both <plug in> and <plug-in>.

  • Search in file for exact phrase with special symbols [windows 8.1]

When I search, for example, for 'name.txt' in file content it seems that it finds all files with 'name' and 'txt' in any order.
Windows 7 seems to have options related to this, like 'use natural language' and 'find partial matches'. But I see nothing in windows 8.
Please let me know if it's possible to search for exact phrase with special symbols.
    Thanks.

When I search, for example, for 'name.txt' in file content it seems that it finds all files with 'name' and 'txt' in any order.
You need to either use the Search tools or learn the Advanced Query Syntax (AQS) that they imply.  Actually you need to do both because the tools only help with the keyword prefix and not with the following syntax that is required to do the specific
search that you want to do.
So, for example, you knew that you wanted to find  name.txt  only in file (or directory?) names so you would use the  Other Properties > Name  tool  to be sure that your query had that prefix  Name:name.txt
In fact, that was a surprise for me just now because I thought the default syntax for Name with no other specification would be "contains" (which would be Name:~=name.txt) but apparently it defaults to  Name:~<name.txt  which means
"begins with"  name.txt.  In fact, from an efficiency point of view that is probably a logical default.  But from a usability point of view it is terrible because it means that when users really want  Name:name.txt  to mean either
"contains" or "ends with" they won't have a clue what to do to make those differences.

  • Search for word/phrase by ctrl+shift+F

    ctrl+shift+F
One can enter here  the file/folder path the search for word/phrase should be made.
But length of this control element is really limited.
If the chosen path is very long, with lot of folder levels, longer than the control element is capable to show it,
the path string is truncated. Truncation in its middle part.
Nobody is able to see how exactly the path is, after it has been shortened.
And now, please imagine that there are several similar paths on the disc.
They differ by theirs middle section only.
Now assume the search needs 3 hours.
    1. After 3 hours of search run user can't say which folder of all similar folders he has chosen for last search operation.
After search completes user is no able to check, which path the search ran in.
    2. If new search in some other folder but in a folder located close to the previous one is aimed  the user
has to follow the whole path from the disc root - job intensive task.
Adobe Reader should use the previous search path as start point of new search path selection.
The full-feature product Adobe Acrobat probably also affected.

    Hi vmartin01,
I tried to check at my end and it works fine at my end.

  • How do I search for a phrase in a published Help?

This is probably a very basic question, but I've been unable
to search for a phrase in a published Help. For instance, if I want
    to search for the phrase:
subject information, I've tried "subject information",
(subject information), subject NEAR information. I've received the
same list of "hits" for all of these, but when I search for the
phrase in any of the topics, it doesn't seem to exist.
I am using Adobe RoboHelp HTML 6 and use the WebHelp layout.
Thanks for any help - this is making me (and the users)
    pretty crazy.

    Basically you have two options.
1] Use ZoomSearch as described on my site. It is low cost and
    gives much improved search options.
2] Upgrade to RH8 as that introduced phrase searching in
    webhelp.

  • 'Help cannot search for that phrase'

I am getting the message 'Help cannot search for that phrase' while searching for 'xml' in a chm (generated using RH9). The old CHM (generated using RH8) shows the results for the keyword xml. Is this a known issue? Any workaround to resolve this issue?

I just tried in a Rh10 project and got the same result in a CHM but not in WebHelp, there the search worked so I suspect it is something in the Microsoft Help Compiler.
There is a solution if you can upgrade to Rh10. That allows you to generate WebHelp and then convert it to a skinned CHM. I just tried that and there the search worked in the CHM.

  • Search for a phrase with RH8

    Hello,
I use RH8 to produce WebHelp. I thought that we should be able to search for a phrase by enclosing the search terms in double quotes. However, I have never been able to use the double quotes to look for a phrase. It still returns topics that have both words in it - but not necessarily next to each other. Am I just confused on this issue or am I missing a step?
    Thanks,
    Julie

You're not alone. That's the way Rh8 works.
I just tested both 8 and 10 using a topic with
    Red rabbit
    and
    My rabbit is red
    in the content.
In Rh8 every instance of red and rabbit was highlighted when I searched "red rabbit". In Rh10, only red rabbit was found.

  • Search for a phrase in quotation marks returns extraneous results

I'm searching for help with a specific error. I used Advanced Search to limit the search to the iTunes forums and searched for this phrase:
    "This computer is not authorized"
The result is 199 messages, most of which do not include that specific phrase.
I thought Search was simply ignoring the quotation marks, but when I remove them, the result is 356 messages.
Searching this forum, I found someone had already reported this problem. I couldn't reply because that thread was opened *two years ago*, and new posts are blocked because it's archived. So I'm reopening this important issue.

  • FQL query text to search for exact string

    Hi
we are using SharePoint 2010 with FAST search...
I'd like to be able to search for this exact string that contains parentheses...  "(ABC)"
    I thought it would be:
    ManagedProperyName:"(ABC)"
this returns results with just ABC ... it ignores the parentheses... i need to only show documents with "(ABC)"

For exact query you can use  equals. For example MPName:equals("<term or phrase>")
However, in your case the parenthesis is considered a special characters which are stripped off during document processing and at query time.

  • Keyword search with exact phrase

When I use the filter bar to search for photos I normally don't find myself in this situation. But now when the photos reaches 10 000+ this will be a problem. The searchfunction in LR does not support serching for an exact phrase like the exact phras "Tom". Exactly "Tom" not "Tommy" or "Romtomtom" or anything else containing "Tom".
The problem appears when I want to search for this exact phrase. I have a real example. I took picture on a golfcompetition called Roland Cup. The founder of the Cup is called Roland. He is not on all pictures of course. The problem occurs when I want to search for the pictures of the founder Roland. If I search with the textfield with is by far the fastest way and type "Roland" I get all the pictures from the competition. That's not how I want it.
Another example for clearance. Let's say that I take pictures of tomatoes and of course set the keyword "tomato". Later I take pictoures of tomato soup. And keyword it just "tomato soup". Then I want to search for the tomato soup pictures. Of course I now get all the pictures of the soup and the tomatoes.
Does anyone have any tip how to do without changing the persons keyword to "Roland Andersson" which is the obvious solution?

    Thanks Ian,
Your answer is part of my answer. Let's say that I took photos in Salt Lake City (classic example huh?). And in Salt Lake City I took pictures of a lake. I keyworded all my photos from Salt Lake City with "Salt Lake City" of course and all my pictures of lakes with lake, of course.
Now I want to filter all my photos of lakes from all over the world. I then search for - what? If I search for "lake" I get all pictures of lakes and all pictures from Salt Lake City. Not good.
And if I want to see the lakephotos in Salt Lake City, how do I perform that search in a good way?
Maybe I'm getting you wrong with the + and !. If I do, can you give me an example how to use them in this Salt Lake City problem.

  • Bing Search API exact phrase match not working?

    Dear Microsoft support,
I have recently subscribed to the Bing Web Search API and now found a problem with exact phrase match.
When searching for "engineering it has over medical", encoded as %27%22engineering%20it%20has%20over%20medical%22%27 I get two results back from you - unfortunately on closer inspection neither one of them contains the phrase I searched for.
I could understand less results than actually exist due to a limited index, but this seems to be a bug.
Please check and let me know how to resolve this.
    Thank you very much!

  • How to search for exact string?

Is there any way to search for the text string exactly as I enter it? Like 'exact search' in the OSS notes?
For example, I'm trying to find the forum posts regarding the Excel 2007 file format XLSX. By XLSX the search finds hundreds of entries, but most of them are not even close. For example, this was one of the top results: /thread/1078918 [original link is broken]
Why is it getting picked up when 'xlsx' doesn't even appear there? We are frequently complaining about the users who don't use search before posting, but, frankly, if it works like this, I can't blame them...

"Why is it getting picked up"
I regularly use this to (re)find threads where I remembered a specific comment or even spelling mistake.
Perhaps a better option in your case would be to use an AND between individual terms.
I generally tend to edit the search string parameters directly, as it seems to cache previous results and do a search within a search. That might be an option for you as well though.

  • Search for exact match without additional words

    Hi everybody,
is it possible to find out if a tag contains a certain word or phrase and nothing else? E.g. the search for all documents with the title "foo" should match all documents containing <title>foo</title> but not documents that contain something like <title>foo bar</title>. I tried something like "( foo ~ ( % ~ foo ) ) WITHIN title" but I get a "wildcard query expansion resulted in too many terms" error, so using a wildcard is no option here. Any ideas?

Another method would be to use extractvalue to limit the rows. It would still use the text index to get the rows with foo in it, then extractvalue would limit it to just those rows where only the word foo is in it. This would eliminate the need for a procedure or user_datastore or increasing the index size. Please see the demonstration below.

Thanks for the suggestion. Although, the problem is not really to get rid of the message (as you can dismiss it quite easily) but to understand why it appears there in the first place. Is it a malware? is it a bug?
So thanks for that. Although as you mentioned, it wasn't very enlightening.
(The 2000 views were probably a couple of years ago. Look at the dates on the posts.)
I did. Half the people who posted had this issue in 2011, and the other half (including me) posted in the last couple of months. So it might be a recurring thing.
I have no idea when 2000 users googled "Tap Continue and sign in to purchase a gift" and viewed this post. Could have been 2 years ago or in the last couple of months.

  • ITunes 10 search for exact match or Boolean Searches

Is there a way to force an exact match when performing a search in iTunes?
I tried putting "" around my search and get no results.
The goal would be to search Artists for the artist "Hem", and only show results for only "Hem" and not both "Hem" and "Edie Brickel and the New Bohemians"
As far as I can tell there are no Boolean search options in here either.

Yep, like I said I leave it there for next time....
I wonder why they would leave what is now a universally understood search option out of iTunes?
