"SEARCH FOR" feature
We have a 27'' iMac OS X.
We store all files on a Seagate FreeAgent Drive. The other day as I was cleaning out files I saw in the SEARCH FOR feature found on left side in window when Harddrive icon is double clicked, files, and files dated from beginning. As I mentioned all files are stored seperate from main iMac drive. I keep a window of the different drives open at the same time for navigation around the system. As I proceeded to delete some files from the SEARCH FOR I noticed it was deleting the file named the same from the Seagate FreeAgent Drive.
It does not make sense why it would do this. Does anyone know why this would happen?

No YouTube content on AppleTV - searching for "Featured" forever
I mean the once that I watched in "recent" section seem to work (although for few days they did not). However, the device still searches for content in Featured, Most Viewed and cannot find anything.
I was wondering if Apple has some special URL that stopped working or perhaps something is blocked by ISP or on router. the fact is - no updates on ATV and everythin worked last week. this week it is missing service on ATV. On the other hand, my Macs can access youtube website. Same with iPod Touch - it is okay and working with YoTube on the same network as my Apple TV.
I believe Apple uses special URL for Apple TV, but I might be wrong.
Any ideas?I am not able to follow. You can not download any DVD content to ATV. Responses can only be as helpful as the details provided. What is it you are doing exactly? Where is this content comming from?

In version 3.x.x I used to be able to type search terms into the address bar and the page would load, similar to Google's "Feeling Lucky" button. Now it just brings up a Google search for the terms I typed in. How can I get this time saving feature back?
The change between Firefox 3.6.* and Firefox 4 is how location bar search works. In Firefox 3.6 it uses Google "Browse by name" search. With the browse by name search, it performs a Google search and if there is a clear match it will take you to the site, otherwise it shows the Google search result. With Firefox 4 it just performs a Google search if you type something which is not recognised as a URL.
To get the Firefox 3.6 behaviour on Firefox 4 you need to change a hidden preference.

When i try to search for specific sites whether to find something or group together a list of sites from the same site, etc, after i type in a term in the Search History box, nothing appears. When i click the empty area it says "no item selected" at the bottom. However i can still search my bookmarks. Just wondering if there's a way to fix this.

Basically I've lost 10GB of free space over the last few weeks so my plan was to search for files modified in the last 2 weeks in order to figure out which ones are big and where that space went.
So I open finder, go to "File > Find", and enter a search:
Modified > In the last 2 weeks
All fine so far.
Problem is, it's showing whole directories as results. Which essentially means that when I order the list by size, Macintosh HD is at the top, followed by "Users", then "Applications", then one of my bigger movie files, then "Library", etc.
How can I do a search which will ignore folders? I want individual files. Knowing that Macintosh HD is the biggest item on my computer and was modified in the last 2 weeks is utterly useless to me.
Older versions of Finder in OS 9 had a feature where you could search for "files, whose type "IS NOT" folder", but OS X doesn't seem to have such a feature.
Can anyone help?How much free space is on the HD, where has all the space gone?

Searching for a single keyword in lightroom 5
Hi there,
I am a newbie to lightroom 5 and I am slowly learning the power of keywords.
My question is,
I have 1000's of images of my daughter in my catalog I have key worded all of them. There are some images with her on her own or with me, the mum, nan, granddad etc etc. I have also key worded the photos with, for example me. So on an image the key word is annie, nick. When I go to the 'text' search in the library list I type in annie and every single image of her comes up be it with me the nan, the mum etc. My daughter has hundreds of image with different family members. How do I just get the search to pick "annie" as the keyword and not the rest of the keywords in the catalog.
For example,
I know I can do a search like this, annie, !nick, !mum, !granddad etc etc, but this is so time consuming. Is there a character that can tell lightroom that you only want the image of annie with no one else or nothing else.
I am aware you can select all of the singular images of my daughter and create a collection with just her but this is also time consuming.
Another way this would be annoying is if you had images of trees for example, some trees might be taken by a water fall, mountain, road, picnic table or just one on its own. you might have hundreds of tree image on there own and hundreds of images of trees with a feature. If you try and search for just a tree or trees with nothing else in the image your search result is going to bring up every single image with a tree in it. Not just the images of a tree.
Hope this makes some sort of sense. I have searched all over the internet and there doesn't seem to be an option for this. Or maybe I am missing something. If I'm not missing something and this just isn't possible maybe lightroom designers could look at implementing this search criteria in future updates.

Nick.I have tried that and i think i am more confused. Its going to take me a while to learn this stuff. I have done the ! option and have narrowed it down to the images I want and have created a collection with just the images I wanted. I think I am going to have to think ahead with the keywording in the future. I will get there, its all trial and error at the moment.
Its only a problem at the moment as I have an external hard drive so I have just added 'ADD" all images (over 4000) to lightroom from there as I want to save all future photos I do on the external hard drive. I am reluctant to fill my new IMAC with loads of images and take up loads of space. With photos I do in the future I will be saving on the imac probably and backing up on my external hard drive. The 4000 images are from the last year or so before I got this MAC.
When I do future photo shoots etc it will be easier to move the images to the correct folders as I will be working on a lot less images. So I believe in the future it will be more managable. Trying to key word 1000's of images at the same time has confused me a bit.

How do I search for sticky notes in a PDF doc?
Several people (at work) have commented on a 440-page document that I created, using sticky notes to write their comments in. When I first open the document, the sticky notes are all closed. The icon for a closed sticky note is pretty small and not brightly colored, so they're easy to miss when scrolling through hundreds of image-heavy pages. I am hoping that it's possible to search for each occurrence of a sticky note.
If there is no way to search for the notes, is there a command I can use to open all the notes in the file (in one action) so that they are larger and easier to spot?

The Acrobat 8 product family passed into "End of Support" many years ago (well before the release of Windows 8).
"End of Support" means -- well, just that eh.
The Acrobat 8 product family is not compatible with Windows 8.1, 8 or 7.
The Acrobat XI product family is compatible with Windows 8 / 8.1.
Regarding Comment and Mark Up Annotations:
With Acrobat 8 Pro use the "Comments List".
Same wit Acrobat 9 Pro, X Pro and XI Pro.
May be available with the various versions' "Standard" release.
The contents of a Comments List can be exported to a PDF report.
The filter an be used to display specific characteristics / attributes which then become the reports content when you output a report.
Having "8" the Help PDF file got loaded with the install of "8".
Use it to review the information provided on the Comments List.

I would like to connect a printer that requires OS 10.6 or newer. My MacBook is currently using OS 10.5.8. In searching for a software update, I am told no updates are needed (and am given no option for updating my OS). How can I upgrade my OS to 10.6 or newer?
You have to understand the difference between an Update and an Upgrade.
An Update is a free change to add to the base code or as a bug fix within an existing Operating System. Such as the .8 added to OSX 10.5 or the .11 added to OSX 10.4..
An Upgrade is a complete new Operating System that must be purchased. Such as 10.5 Leopard to 10.6 Snow Leopard.
10.5 Leopard was written for Power PC Macs with code added to force it to run on Intel processors.
10.6 Snow Leopard has completely rewritten code and only runs on Intel Macs.
10.7 Lion ($19.99) used some 32 bit which allows it to run on Late 2006 through Early 2008 MacBooks and a lot of 64 bit code.
10.8 Mountain Lion ($19.99) is pure 64 bit, which excludes more systems than Lion did. It can only run on the Late 2008 through Mid 2010 MacBooks. It's not something you can add memory to, for example, as it involves the base architecture.
10.9 Mavericks is pure 64 bit and is a free download from the App store.
The 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD is in the Apple online store. How can I: Search for files "not in catalog"
Is there a way to search for files/photos on my hard drive that are *NOT* already in my catalog?
(a) I can do a mass search to find all photos on my hard drive.
(b) And there is a reconnect feature - for all entries in catalog with a missing/invalid link, look for the file that matches best.
But I'd like to have Elements find photos that I have not added to the catalog.
That is, do (a), but check each one to see if it is already added.
Is there a way to do that?

In folder view you can see the folder which have no media files in Organizer.
If you import all the files form all the drives on your system, by deafult you will see files just imported into catalog. That means, just after import ou will have the files which were not in your catalog :-)
I know my answer could be confusing for you, but it will make sense if you know what happens after import in Organizer... -
Searching for a good file manager
I'm searching for a good file manager. Konqueror 3.5 is quite good, dolphin 4.1 and konqueror 4.1 are not. Since konqueror 3.5 is going to die due to lack of support in the future, I kind of need to find a new good file manager...
Do there exist file managers with the following features?
Many of these features are things I thought were quite logical to be in a file manager, but seem to be missing in most "modern" ones...
-independent of any desktop (gnome or KDE), just a standalone program
-preferably not being both a web browser and file manager in once, at least not in an annoying way. Konqueror 3.5 shows that being that combination is possible without being annoying.
-ability to have a tree view of the folders on one side and list view showing the files and subfolders of the folder currently selected in the tree on the other side
-detailed list view showing at least filename, type, date and size, and the ability to sort according to any of these properties
-a non-detailed view showing image contents would also be nice, to browse folders of photos or other images
-ability to open files in certain programs if you doubleclick the file, NOT open it by singleclicking, singleclicking may only select it
-ability to select multiple files by dragging box around files or using keys like "ctrl" and "shift"
-ability to do "open terminal here" or type terminal commands in the current open directory
-must have ability to drag files from one folder to another, from list view to tree view and vica versa, to move or copy them
-and must have ability to use "ctrl+c" and "ctrl+v" to copy files and foldes from here to there
-multiple tabs is a huge plus
-favorites (to local folder paths) is also a huge plus
-preview of files when hovering the mouse over them is nice
-must have ability to zip and unzip (or other compression formats) folders by just right clicking them and choosing a zip/unzip command there
-in addition to that, must also have ability to browse through a zip file as you would through a normal directory, and drag files from the insides of the zip file to the tree view to automatically unzip those files there, and of course "ctrl+c"/"ctrl+v" should also work to copy a file from the inside of the zip file, to some other folder on your disk
-no horizontal autoscrolling in the tree view, that is an invention straight from the abyss...I know exactly how you feel about KDE 4 vs. 3 -- Konqueror was the best part of KDE for me (pretty much the only part I ever used, actually; my window manager is a slightly modified version of WMII and I generally loathe "desktop environments"). KDE 4 ruined it, completely and utterly.
I submitted about 20 different bug reports about Konqeuror 4, mostly features that they'd deleted or mangled; some of them are starting to be addressed now. I don't think they'll ever fix the speed issues though, because those are dependent on the underlying KDE 4 libraries as far as I can tell -- it's as if KDE 4 were purposely and deliberately designed to be slower than KDE 3. Even if they fix all of its deficiencies, that'll probably keep me from using it...
Right now there's KDEmod, which will hopefully maintain its KDE 3 branch for a while longer. It's starting to show some problems, though; I haven't been able to get kdemod konqueror 3 to work fully out of the box (the settings pages are all blank). On my main machine, I somehow managed to hack together some of the KDEmod3 packages so that I have a functional konqueror 3 running alongside the Arch repository's version of KDE4. I'm afraid to pacman -Syu now, though, because it will probably break horribly :P
I don't remember exactly how I got konqueror 3 going like that, as I did it in my initial fit of rage after I did the pacman -Syu that got me KDE4 (a decision I have regretted ever since), but it was something like this:
1. move /opt to /opt.kde4
2. make a new /opt
3. download several KDE 3 packages from the KDEmod3 repositories manually
4. extract those packages into the new /opt with tar -xzf (NOT pacman!)
5. try /opt/kde/bin/konqueror
6. read reams of error messages about missing libraries, segfaults, etc.
7. try to supply the missing libraries by downloading other kdemod3 packages and manually extracting them
8. goto 5
Then, when everything worked (sort of), I renamed some stuff so that 'konqueror' is konqueror 4 (I think having it konqueror 3 broke something else, but I don't remember what), and konqueror 3 is called 'k3nqueror'.
If KDEmod3 ever goes away and there's no other good replacement file manager by then, I'll probably take the source code of KDE3 and try to make a standalone version of konqueror out of it. (Which will probably be quite a project because of how interdependent all the KDE components are.)
Some features I "need" in a file manager, besides the ones you mentioned:
- Konqueror's tree view (where you can expand folder branches in the file list)
- Infinite view splitting -- I frequently have my konqueror windows split into 4, sometimes as many as 6 or 7 view panes. Very useful for sorting out files.
- Selection rectangles are sensitive only over files -- I find full-row-select really annoying, because there are no guaranteed "blank" areas that you can click on to clear a selection. I also use this behaviour to grab long-named files that are interspersed with short ones, because they hilight first when the rectangle touches them (you wouldn't think this very useful, but surprisingly often you do want to do something to all the long-named files...)
- Right-clicking on a folder and clicking "Paste" pastes into that folder, not the current one -- you'd be amazed at how many file managers get this wrong. I shouldn't have to cd into a folder just to paste some files there. -
I began getting popups for Microsoft malware alerts/Mackeeper zeobits/and othe ads. I am on a Mac OS 8.5.
I downloaded virus protection, adware protection and ran them all and got nothing. Then I got a phoney call from the "microsoft technicians, so called Applecare and they told me what files to search for if it was Safari and suggested I contact Firefox. In the upper right-hand corner of the screen (where the red X is), the middle button (Restore Down) doesn't restore down. How do I fix this??

Firmware on cp1518ni failed. lights on printer stay on.
After updating showed complete, the lights on my cp1518ni color laserjet stayed on. The printer no longer comunicates with my PC. What can I do to fix this problem? I suspect the firmware had errors in it when I downloaded it.
