Search Glossary?

I'm developing a help system with just a glossary
where the user would like to use RoboHelp's search feature to
search the glossary. In testing, the search did not bring back any
results from the terms in the glossary.
Does RoboHelp's search look for text in the glossary? Or,
will it be necessary for me to create a single topic containing the
glossary terms so that we can use the search to find words?

JoanMS -
Welcome to the forum, and sorry for the delayed response.
While RH's glossary feature is nifty, is is meant to supplement the
actual help system, and as you have discovered, doesn't avail
itself to the search process.
Perhaps you would be better off with the glossary built as
individual topics, or glossary terms separated with bookmarks, or a
combination of the two. Perhaps 24 topics pages, each with term for
the letters from A to XYZ, and bookmarks for each term.
You could have them display in a popup-type window. Lots of
different ways of going about that, depending on how you want it to
look, and behave.

  • Contents/Index/Search/Glossary toolbar

The Contents/Index/Search/Glossary toolbar in my WebHelp
project only displays the text for one tab at a time.
For example, by default the project opens with the Contents
tab displayed. You can see the word "Contents" with the blue
background. However, for the rest of the tabs, you can only see the
icons on a white background. If you click on an icon, for example,
the Index icon, then the word "Index" and blue background display.
I want all the tabs to display with their words and on a blue
background at the same time. Can any of you help me? Thanks!

    Welcome to the forum.
If you are using a skin, it is as simple as double clicking
the skin and setting the colours and text to what you want.
As described, there will no difference between the tab with
focus and the other tabs. Some small difference does assist
    usability.

  • Why is the left hand window and bar with the buttons for TOC/Search/Glossary not displaying in one client location?

    Greetings all:
I have more years of experience with RoboHelp than I want to admit, but I have never run into this before. I have a published RoboHelp 9 project for an overseas client that displays exactly as it should when the published version is viewed by myself or another RoboHelp developer (not located where I am). However; the users at 1 of 2 two client sites do not see the left hand TOC window or the bar above the project with the buttons (the other site does see it). The users at both sites are using Internet Explorer 9, and I have been told there is no difference in their security set-up. I suspect that at the site where it is not displaying there is a security setting that is throwing it off, but I am not sure what to have them look for. Anyone have any ideas?
    W. Keith

Do they not simply see the bar or is it empty? In the first situation, it seems they are opening the topic directly instead of via the start file.
What is the URL the users are using on both the locations? And do the users have a hyperlink 'Show' at the top of the topics?
    Kind regards,
    Willam

  • RoboHelp HTML 8 Search problem

I have a single (non-merged) RoboHelp 8 HTML project in which I cannot seem to get Search working correctly.
I expected to see a box into which I can type a search term and a blank pane below the Contents/Index/Search/Glossary bar where search results would appear.  Instead, I get the following when I generate WebHelp:
This problem appears in IE 6, IE 7, Firefox 3.0, and Firefox 3.5, all of which our customer base uses.  I'm using RoboHelp 8 on a Windows PC with XP Pro 2002, SP3.
In the Project Settings/General dialog, I have the default settings for the Stop List and the Always Ignore List selected.  For "Add new keywords to" I have "Index File (HHK)" selected, and "Binary Index" is selected.
When generating WebHelp, I have the following set:
General selections:  Under "Additional Options," "Apply to all Topics," "CSS" is selected, with the correct CSS name displayed.  "Add Mark of the Web" is selected.
Navigation selections:  For Toolbar Buttons, Contents, Index, Search, Glossary are selected.  For Search Options, "Enable Highlight Search Results" is selected.
Navigation Pane Preferred Format selection is Pure HTML.  (We tried DHTML/HTML but that resulted in an empty nav pane and a nonfunctional index.)
Optimize Speed For:  Web Site (Internet)
    Publish:  Republish All.
What are we doing wrong?  I'm totally stumped and I can't seem to find any help on this issue anywhere.  Thanks!

    Hi there
    Please do expound.

I finally succeeded in getting a Search pane that looked right and performed correctly by deselecting the Mark of the Web option.
To my knowledge this option only affects the output when you view things locally, as in when you are testing the output immediately after generating. Are you saying here that it somehow affected things after you uploaded the files to the server?

  • How can I delete the Index and Search features in a RoboHelp 9 project?

I have a RoboHelp 9 project in which the user does not want the Index. The only way I could delete it was to click on the Delete button for each entry until the Index was blank. So that worked. Only problem is that it created a mess of the Search feature. There are now numbers and letters in Search that link to topics. We want the Search feature disabled. Any suggestions?

    Hi there
    What is your output type?
If it's WebHelp, look at the Single Source Layout properties. In the properties you will find an area with check boxes that allow you to turn off Index, Search, Glossary, Etc.
Click the area on the left that is labeled Navigation and just clear the check marks from what you wish to turn off.

If you looked at the error message and searched the forum, you should find the answer as this is a problem that started in 2005. You should not run CHM files from a server and cannot without editing the users registry. See the page below.

  • RoboHelp HTML Version 10 - Navigation panel not displaying in published project

We are generating a WebHelp project in RoboHelp HTML Version 10 and the navigation panel (TOC, Search, etc.) is no longer visible in the index file (viewed locally) and it's only visible by clicking "Show" when viewed in a web server. This issue is occurring with Internet Explorer 11 and Google Chrome Version 39.0.2171.99 m. I also tried to view the index files of previously generated projects and am experiencing the same issue (this did not occur before). Is this a known issue? It appears that there a few other discussions posted recently experiencing similar issues. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Nikki

    Hi there
Sorry, but I'm a bit confused. What you are describing sounds like perfectly normal behavior.
Can you share a link where this is happening? Not so we can click it, but so we can see what the link looks like.
If you want a topic to open with the surrounding navigation (TOC, Index, Search, Glossary) you need to click the Show link, then look at what's in the Address bar. Copy that link and you should have what you need.

  • No .rhc file to call in WebHelp

In WebHelp Pro we called the .rhc file but now that we're
using WebHelp how do we "call" for context sensitivity?
BACKGROUND: I built a OLH system using WebHelp PRO consisting
    of 1 master project and 15 sub-projects. I placed only a Welcome
topic and global links out to the other topics -- then a link back
into the master.....Looked and worked great, HOWEVER, the Glossary,
Index and Search capability was not global.... You had to enter a
specific project to only view it's Index, etc.
    So, I phoned customer support.
They said I'd need to change everything (single source layouts)
to WebHelp instead of Webhelp Pro, then, merge everything
    together.
I didn't realize you could'nt merge projects if they were in
    PRO format.
I rebuilt the structure by removing all the links and merging
    all the projects into one.
Now, it looks and works great with full global search,
glossary, index capability -- however, my programmer is lost
because there's no longer .rhc files for him to "call"......to gain
    context sensivity.....
Usually, we'd go to the SSL!>WebHelp PRO folder to locate
    it.....
Now, when we go to the SSL! > WebHelp folder it's totally
    empty.
Help! what do we do at this point to call a topic?
When the user clicks on a specified icon for Workflow
diagrams, it should call the Workflow topic.
Customer support is closed, I hope you can help -- this has to
pass Quality Assurance tomorrow morning! Chris

In response to your baby steps post... (I'm just now seeing
    it) -- sorry.....
When I go to the SS layout, Properties of one of my
sub-projects called "CALENDAR" (this is what it says):
    C:\Documents and
    Settings\attanasic\Desktop\MASTER\PIMS\!SSL!\WebHelp\mergedProjects\CALENDAR\CALENDAR.htm
When I go to the SS layout, Properties of the
    Master project it says:
    C:\Documents and
    Settings\attanasic\Desktop\MASTER\PIMS\!SSL!\WebHelp\PIMS_Master.htm
The way the support person taught me was to LEAVE the master
project generating to it's own default folder.... (which is the
    SSL!>WebHelp folder......
but when you go to the sub-projects, you must change the
generation location and direct it back INTO the master project's
    "mergedProjects" folder...
Once you are in there....you'll see a folder already
generated and ready to hold your sub-project's output. (in this
case, within the "mergedProjects folder" was an automatically
generated 'CALENDAR' folder....so, to be successful in your merge,
you double click on the Calendar folder and direct the path into
    there......
After doing so, you generate the sub-project then
close.....then, go back and generate your master project (and be
sure not to checkmark the 'republish all' button when re-generating
your master to prevent unwanted overwrites of your master's
sub-projects. (this is the final stage of merging) and it all works
    beautifully......
Specific Steps to Merge Projects Together (in order):
    1) create a master project - set SS layout to WebHelp
    2) create 2 sub-projects -(we'll call them: "Calendar" and
"Data" and set each to SS: WebHelp
    3) go back to master's TOC and add "New Merged Project"
    (looks like a "G" icon)
    4) go to SS layout, right click, generate, then generate
(when you do this, it creates the sub-folder within the
mergedFolder area --- ready and waiting for you output to be pushed
    into here)
    5) go back to you sub-projects, click on the SS layout,
Generate, change path (navigating into the MASTER project > SSL
    > WEBHELP > MergedFolders > Calendar.....(repeat the same
    step for the Data project).....
Now, that you've got the sub-projects dropping into the
master -- you need to do one final generate on the master to update
what has been pushed into it's mergedFolders area..... and you're
    done.
All looks and works beautifully.....all are merged together
and share one Glossary, one Index, etc.
Now, if you go to file explorer and navigate to the WebHelp
folder for Calendar, or Data, or any other sub-project it is empty
because it's no longer generating into that area.
WALLAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just figured it out! --- well,
    PART OF THE PROBLEM.....
The key was "it's no longer generating to THAT area" --- now,
I'll need to tell my programer to dig down into the MASTER
PROJECT'S FOLDER, MergedProjects folder, and sub-folder (ie:
    Calendar)
    Problem 1 (missing .rhc files)
Problem 2 (the full file name path that was used and was
visible in WebHelp Pro was: .rhc.htm)
    like this:
    .........web/MASTER/CALENDAR/CALENDAR/!SSL!/WebHelp_Pro/CALENDAR_rhc.htm
I found .rhc files in the MergedProjects folders --- but none
have the .htm at the end -- so, I'm not sure that they'll work.
Will have to get the programmer to try calling it on his side
    I guess....
I guess I'm stuck for tonight --- until he confirms whether
or not it will work without the .htm extension.
    Thanks for your help!
I'll get back with you (everyone) on the outcome.....
If you think of anything else -- feel free to post! 8-)

  • Edit WebHelp Skin Buttons?

On the Toolbar tab in the WebHelp Skin Editor, can the
default buttons (Contents, Index, etc.) in The Main and Nav Bar
lists be rearranged or deleted? When I select one of these buttons,
the delete button ( - minus button) is disabled. And there seems to
be no way to reorder them.

Hi dchell and welcome to our community
When you generate WebHelp in the following manner:
Locate the Single Source Layouts area and double-click the
    WebHelp layout
You have options in the ensuing dialogs that allow you to
choose whether the TOC/Index/Search/Glossary buttons appear and in
    which order.

  • RoboHelp 8: can't display TOC content using Chrome

I just converted from X5 to RH 8. I can open a single Web page in Chrome, but when I click on any of the buttons (Contents, Index, Search, Glossary), they do not work and displaying nothing. I've scoured the boards and found Peter's 103 snippet (http://www.grainge.org/pages/snippets/snippets.htm) and applied it to no effect. What am I missing??? Thanks.

Okay, I have a fix (thanks to Tulika at Adobe) for those of you who are interested.
I understand you are using Chrome 5 to view RH 8 output. Chrome 5 has a strict security policy for html pages viewed locally (from disk and not from some web server) because of which iframes in RH 8 output fail to load. If you publish the same output to any web server and view it in Chrome from there, it will work just fine for you.
To enable local viewing of your output, you will have to disable this extra security check in chrome. You can do that by launching Chrome.exe with "--allow-file-access-from-files" option. Kindly ensure that you close all open Chrome instances and then launch Chrome with this option.
You can find more details about this security issue in Chrome at this link : http://blog.chromium.org/2008/12/security-in-depth-local-web-pages.html
Here's what I did to implement this fix and locally (and correctly) view my help in Chrome:
Create a NEW Chrome shortcut on the desktop and rename it to RH Chrome (or some such indicator).
Right-click the new Chrome icon and choose Properties.
Add the "--allow-file-access-from-files" text to the end of the path displaying in Target, as shown in the below image. Make sure you leave a space between the original string and the tag you are adding to the end of it.
    Click OK to save.
If you have any Chrome instances open, close them.
To test, launch an instance of Chrome using the shortcut you created.
Go to your file system and right-click any .html file in your RoboHelp WebHelp directory and choose Open with and then Google Chrome. Please note that I had to add Chrome as an "Open with" option. Because you have your customized instance of Chrome already opened, Help will auto-launch using that instance. I'm sure there's a better way to auto-launch this from RoboHelp itself, but this was a quick and dirty test just to make sure it was working.

  • AIR Help - Why is Print Sequence Disabled?

    Hi all,
I have experimented with a copy of a client's Help system in
both RH7 w/packager and the RH8 trial, generating output to the AIR
Help format. After generating & installing the .air package,
and viewing the new .exe help file, I notice the following: Click
the dropdown next to the Print icon and three options are listed
(Print this page, Print sequence, Print entire Help). No matter
what is selected below, Print sequence is always unavailable
(grayed out). This is the case when I generate with either version.
Am I missing something in the settings?
    Thanks,
    Katie
    Katie Carver
    Senior Technical Writer

    Hi all
In addition to what my colleague and fellow Adobe Community
Expert Peter suggested, I read this thread and am inferring that
perhaps Katie doesn't fully understand how Browse Sequences work.
Particularly in WebHelp. So I see this could impact the operation
    of things.
Please allow me to try and explain.
A Browse Sequence is merely a pre-defined path that traverses
two or more topics so that they are presented in a logical order.
You said that you created a Browse Sequence using the Auto-create
feature so I'm assuming you now have several different sequences.
This is because until you change the number of Book levels, you end
up with several sequences. If you wanted a single sequence that
spanned all of the TOC, you would need to auto-create the sequence
and specify 0 as the book levels.
That bit will hopefully help you sort the sequence creation.
Now let's address the sequence *USE*.
When you have created WebHelp output by clicking File >
Generate Primary Layout (assuming the primary is WebHelp) you see
four or five intermediate dialogs that allow you to specify
different parameters that govern how that layout is created.
Typically on the second dialog is an option for Browse Sequences.
So once you have created a sequence, you have to remember to enable
it in WebHelp in order to see it work. At this point, I'm thinking
you *MAY* have done this but it isn't clear. After all, if you have
never used them before, you may not have realized you needed to do
this step. You also may not realize how the sequence appears in
    WebHelp.
So once you have defined the sequence and told WebHelp to
present it, you generate and the sequence is presented as two icons
in the "Navigation mini-toolbar". The little toolbar that sits
majestically perched at the top of the TOC, Index, Search, Glossary
and just below the main toolbar. So here's why you may think it's
not working in WebHelp. The behavior of the Previous and Next icons
will change depending on which topic you are viewing. If the topic
presented in the Topic pane is part of a sequence, one or both of
the buttons will be enabled. If the topic is the *FIRST* topic of a
sequence, the Next button will be enabled but Previous will not be.
This is because you cannot go further backward. The topic begins
the sequence. Assuming there are more than two topics in the
sequence, you click the Next button and the next topic in the
sequence is presented in the topic pane. This should then cause the
Previous button to enable and work when you click it. Once the last
topic in a sequence is presented, the Next button disables as you
    cannot go further.
The bottom line here is that if you are displaying a topic
that is not part of a browse sequence, bot buttons will be disabled
    and dead to the user.
Now shift focus to AIR Help. It seems reasonable to me that
if the AIR Help is presenting a topic that isn't part of the Browse
Sequence, just as WebHelp disables both the Previous and Next
buttons in the mini toolbar, AIR Help may disable the Print
    Sequence feature.
Now that it's hopefully clear how this all works, please
ensure you are displaying a topic that is included in a Browse
Sequence and see if you now have an available option. I'm not
looking at AIR Help at the moment as I have no access to RoboHelp
    8. So you might be seeing a bug or you might find it now works as
designed. Only you can say for certain.
Keep in mind that when you create AIR Help, I believe it has
to be installed after created in order to see it work. So just to
be on the safe side, after you ensure things are configured as
outlined, try generating to a different output file name, then
    install and test that.
    Whew... Rick

  • Fix for WebHelp frame display in Mozilla?

I've checked a number of resources on this topic, including
Peter Grainge's helpful Website, but I have yet to find a solution.
When running our WebHelp Help project in Mozilla, the top portion
of the project frame that separates the navigation and topic
viewing area from the contents, index, and search tabs is hidden.
Is there some type of tweak that can be made to one of the
javascript files to make this portion of the frame display? P.S.
The JavaScript console in Mozilla reported a number of scripting
and htm page errors. The errors point to the following files:
    whstart.js, whskin_tbars.htm, whskin_mbrs.htm. Thank you for your
    input.

    You say,
The missing frame is a HUGE sore spot with our overseas
colleagues who see this as a significant flaw and would like to
    have it fixed.
    I'm not sure I understand what's missing.
In lieu of a picture, here's a list of window and frame
    components I see in Firefox (Netscape is substantially the same;
    Opera is a little different.):
    1. The Firefox browser window, with toolbars, status bar,
etc. as specified in the browser's View menu.
    Inside the window:
    2. The main WebHelp toolbar across the width of the window.
2a. A background image or color of my choice in the toolbar.
2b. Contents, Index, Search, Glossary, "About" buttons, any
that I specified in the single source layout.
2c. A custom logo/button that I built into the skin in RH.
2d. A horizontal frame rule between the main toolbar and the
topic, visible in IE, is missing in Mozilla and the other browsers.
    3. The Navigation frame at left.
3a. The minibar heading, in a background color or image of my
choice (requires a patch in whskin_mbars.htm) and a thin bottom
    border.
3b. The "Hide" X icon (requires one of those patches)
3c. Triangle icons for browsing foward and back, if I built a
browse sequence (requires one of those patches).
3d. The selected listing -- Contents, Index, whatever.
3e. A vertical frame rule between the left and topic frames,
matching the horizontal frame rule above the topic.
    4 The topic frame
4a. The topic header, if any.
4b The topic. with scrollbars if needed
4c The topic footer, if any.
So, please explain, what's missing in your WebHelp that is "a
    HUGE sore spot "?

  • Customized buttons

I created new customized buttons in RoboHelp. I want all the
buttons to have a rollover state. Although each button is
programmed exactly the same, some buttons do not maintain their
    rollover state. HELP!!

    Hi again
Sorry, but the nature of these beasties is that the state is
not retained. This is because with the normal
TOC/Index/Search/Glossary buttons, the state is retained to show
what is currently visible in the navigation pane. For custom
buttons, all you will ever see is the rollover state. This is
because once you click, the navigation pane doesn't normally
change. The buttons only evoke an action, such as loading a topic
    or opening a URL.
Sorry, I'm unaware of a way to alter the code to make the
state persist. Maybe someone super good at JavaScript will jump in
here and enlighten all of us.
