Search in more than one catalog

I am currently evaluating PS LR and I have the following question regarding catalogs:
I have several catalogs that each contain a year's photographs. One for 2005, one for 2006 one for 2007. I regularly take images of a specific subject (my little daughter) and I tag them accordingly. Now I want to make a selection of all images of my daughter taken in those 3 years. That means I want to run a search through multiple catalogs. Then I want to convert that selection to JPG and export to a specific folder.
Hopefully someone can tell me if this is possible.
Thanks!
Selwin

And I partly agree with John. Here is my "however"
My structure
MelsPhotos
>2001
subject x
subject xx
etc
>2002
subject x
etc
I avoid the dead end problem by the year folder and subject subfolders. If I was shooting more photos, I would go to month then subject.
I use Collections to at least match my folders. I also have a top level Collection that all of the subCollections are in. That way, I know that all photos of Michael can be referenced in one place with out sorting, finding by keyword, etc. and yet I have a reasonable breakdown by subject such as "Michaels Fifth Birthday"
I never could get enough discipline to rigorously keyword subjects all the time. This way works for me. I have read the DAM Book and tried several methods. To each his/her own.
Good luck.

  • Same photo in more than one catalog - what happens?

What happens if you have the same photo in more than one catalog?
Background: I'm using a 4yr old 13" MacBook and my Lightroom is getting rather slow, on some pictures unusable.  At the same time my lrcat files are growing rather fast.  Probably due to my current work on some old scanned slides which require quite a lot of spot removal (last 3 photos worked on increased the lrcat file by 250mb) and each time Lightroom became virtually unusable.  I will be upgrading the computer but it wont be for a few months yet.  On one of the last slides I ended up with a "Oops! An untagged string (history step does not belong to instance) got thrown far enough that we display it to the user. This shouldn't happen.".
So I'm looking at splitting my catalog into two or more seperate catalogs.  But I have some galleries which contain photos from what would cross "sensible" splits of catalog so I thought about having the same photo in both catalogs where necessary.
My Lightroom is set to include metadata in XMP (probably making the performance worse).  I had intended to split catalogs using "export to catalog".
Does the photo in each catalog have it's own develop "fork" ? (i.e. does the metadata include catalog tags) ?  Or will changes made to the photo in one catalog automatically upadate the next catalog (or overwrite changes made in the other catalog), etc.?  Only a single computer, no network/sharing issues, nothing on exchangable/removable disk drives.
I could experiment but after quite some time the other day resolving the "history step does not belong to instance") I am treating my catalog with great care.
(I have does a search for the question so will be very embarassed/appologetic if somebody says "Read www.adobe.com/.....").
    Many thanks

For some reason photos were scanned in as jpegs.  They end-up at around 16-19MB each.  Reasons for that are historical.  I am applying spot corrections in Photoshop in a new layer, then merging layers when everyting is done OK to save (saving as PSD gave a massive file size).  I will try saving as tiff.  Personally I hate JPEGs but was never too concerned about the scans in LR as LR is never resaving the image (non-destructive editing).  I may easily upgrade to CS6 (upgrade is <£200 on Amazon), but being non-professional, fuds are not unlimited (particularly with new computer coming soon!!).
So weird effect is with jpegs around 16MB after Photoshop edits.  It is completely reproducable (i.e. has happened exactly the same of every photo done via this route).  The surprising thing is that exiting and restarting LR stops the weird effect.
Adding 2 and 2 together to get 22, I wonder if, as I have "Write Metadata to XMP ..." enabled, if LR has a watch on the file for changes after switching to external editor (i.e. to detect when external editor saved changes so LR updates from the file) and that that "watch for change" is not cancelled after exiting the external editor - maybe because LR cannot know if external editing is compketed (even though exitng Photoshop does not stop the effect).  Then, when LR writes to the file (to update the XMP data) it "detects" the change it causd itself and hence the reload.  If I change the Catalog Settings to disable the "Include develop settings in JPEG ..." and disable the "Save XMP Data ...", the effect goes away and if I re-enable those catalog options the effect returns.
I will try saving as tiff in future now I'm really re-saving the image.
    Many thanks

  • How do I enable Firefox 4 to do a search on more than one word (e.g. "yahoo mail") without receiving the error message "the URL is not valid and cannot be loaded"?

After loading Firefox 4.0, I changed the address bar search engine to Google Search by Name, so I'd be taken straight to the most relevant webpage when I type in a word.
It works fine when I type in one word, but if I use a search with more than one word (e.g. "yahoo mail" or "google maps") I get an alert saying "The URL is not valid and cannot be loaded". Is there any way I can fix the address bar to accept multiple word searches?
I've tried disabling all my add-ons, but it didn't make any difference.

Hi, this should sort out your problem:
    1. Type in "about:config" into the address bar, this will open the settings menu. Click on "I'll be careful, I promise!"
    2. Search for "keyword.URL" in the filter bar.
    3. Enter "http://www.google.com/search?btnI=I%27m+Feeling+Lucky&q=" into the value field.
I'm no expert, but I had the same problem which got on my nerves after being so used to being able to type anything in, and following these steps fixed it.

  • Is it better to have more than one Catalog

I have close to 800 GB worth of images, and I just got LR, so not sure what would be best.
I will be importing my images as (Reference), since I have all my images on Ext. HD. The questions that I have is should I import my images on two separate Catalogues.
I read somewhere that it's recommended to have more than one Catalogue as a precautionary measurement, I guess if something happens to one of the catalogues, I still would have some images available. Yes, I am aware of back ups.
I am open to any suggestions,
    Thanks

    Elli,
Aah, now that makes a difference. It seems that we are concurring, what you described is the same thing that mentioned where you can set under "Preferences" to select which Catalog to work with. I think what threw me off, is when you said that your DB was on your Int. HD. Actually, I think all is there is the name of the file,i.e., .lrdb.
I think this is the safest way to set up LR, regardless how many images you have. You always have to think about Plan B. I'll check the link you sent me. I'm also using LR User's Manual 135 pgs.
I am aware of the large number of images I have, and that is why I'm editing, deleting as much as possible prior to the migration. I checked the Preferences and I changed preview at 1024 pixel (the smallest).
    JohB
Yeah, it's kind of funny regardless. Oh I wish I could have an invisible dig camera reaching the other side hmmm, that would be something eh?
I would like to use the same analogy you used. I am sure that B&Noble keeps a separate DB and they extract and manipulate their DB with their Corp. DB. Having said that, that is basically my intention. Why would I review my inventory relying on a single DB. Why not bring the DB for the store that I am interested.
There are a couple of reasons that I'd go for more than one Catalog. One is the obvious it would be a huge preview file to open and work with a single DB. Second, if something should happen I don't want to be dependent on having all my images on a single DB. Granted, I'd have a back up but..... you never know.
I am sure about performance issue, but I would suspect that for the mere fact, that if you open LR is going to take a bit longer to bring all the previews on.
In spite of the big task I have, it has been very rewarding. I found some images that I have not seen for a while and too be honest some were huge files. I remember that I have a couple that I had it sent for Drum scanning and the file is huge. I have taken them out of my HD and made multiple DVD copies. Can you imagine having this puppy on LR and trying to boot up?
    JohnK,
Thanks for bringing up a good point, about using a different keyword system. Now the question is how could I differentiate them in a very simple way having a big file. I was thinking that I could batch it or maybe using Automator

  • Use more than one Catalog from ECC 6

At the configuration point in ECC 6 Materials Management ... Web Services: ID and Description I can describe more than one catalog URL address , but the user see in transaction ME21N or ME51N only that catalog with the default flag.
Is it possible to use more than one catalog by these SAP standard functionality?

    Hi Markus,
    no!
Unfortunatly, it is just posible to use ONE catalogue. At the beginning of development there was kept open the posibilitiy to make posible the use several catalogues in a later state.  That`s mainly the reason why more than one can be entered in customizing. But the functionality of using more than one was never developed later on.
    best regards,
    Angela

  • Using more than one catalog

If I have more than 1 catalog, can I start Lightroom with different shortcut so when I click it will start the propper catalog inestead of going to close and reopen the other catalog???
    Thanks for Your help

    dj_paige wrote:
This is one reason why most people recommend for most situations that you use only one catalog.
    Wot dl_paige says.
There may be particular reasons for multiple catalogues, especially for professional photographers.  Examples are: to separate personal from business, or to keep work for different clients in separate, water-tight silos.
However, there are enormous benefits in having all photos in one catalogue where that's possible.  You can search, sort, collate etc over all your photos.  Photos in a catalogue don't all have to be on one drive, and they don't even have to be online.  Lightroom can manage hundreds of thousands of images in a catalogue without slowing down significantly.

  • Searching for more than one Label colour

E.g. I want to search for files with either a RED or ORANGE label, but I cannot seem to do that. I can have 2 search lines, but they are AND which means I only get files with BOTH labels set which is impossible so I get nothing.
If I just use a single criteria line and CMD click more than one label, it also seems to do an AND of the 2 criteria. Isn't there any way to do an OR search with labels?
    Anyone know?

In Finder search, when clicking the plus sign to add search parameters, hold down the Option key. The plus sign becomes ellipses, which will produce an "Any of the following are true"➚ conditional. This generates the Boolean "OR" filter that you are looking for.

  • More than one catalog and size?

Hello to the Gurus present!<br /><br />I have: PSE 5.0, Windows XP and Vista CPU, lots of disk space.<br /><br />What is the general concensus: One catalog for 20,000 pictures or more with a lot of tags or is it better to have several catalogs?<br /><br />When I look at a picture with Alt-Enter I can see the tags, but not the collections. So, I guess, these are not written to the files. Would it be a good idea then to make "dummy tags" for collections?<br /><br />Also, is there a limit for the file size? My wife adds surely 10,000 to 15,000 pics a year now and I am "supposed" <grin-grin> to keep them in order.<br /><br />Thanks,<br />Alexander

    Colin,
Thanks for coming back quickly to my query with some answers.
    Split/Merge catalogs:
I have never tried to split a catalog (no need up to now), but I managed to combine two catalogs by
    - tagging all pictures in both catalogs
    - writing the tags to the files ( I have only PSD, TIFF and JPG)
    - start a new catalog
    - import the directories where the pictures are
    - seems to have worked, except that I forgot in one small directory at the time of import to tick the import tags
    Collections:
Thanks for info. Will start using them.
    Limit on file size:
I was thinking on catalog size. My guess is that there is in the MS Access DB no real upper limit which a normal mortal would reach. The image size? My largest up to now are around 50MB as I do not work commercially. No problem in this area. My new HP Pavilion has 2 x 300 GB plus a 300 GB "Personal Drive" in an exchange bay and I have external drives to dump and backup.
    DEL Key:
Yup! I agree THE most important tool! LOL! We did manage to reduce the 15,000 plus of 2006 to 8644. If I delete one more the rolling pin might be flying in my direction! :-)

  • How to access more than one catalog from ECC

We use the catalogs in SRM from ECC, ME21N. But we are only able to access one catalog. Is there any way to access different catalogs for the users. We have set up different catalogs in customizing but are not able to selcet them.
At the moment we have one for each country, and would like to be able to select among theese, not create one big one? I have heard of an ad-on from SAP is this correct?  Any advice on further readings or suggestions to solutions on this problem?
    Regards
    Ivar

    Hi Ivar,
We are also having almost same requirement for multiple catalogs. Can you please let me know how to proceed further on this.
Right now we are able to config only 1 catalog and its working but we need two more to be added.
    Regards,
    Pavan.

  • I can´t synchronize more than one catalog in lightroom mobile

I am a professional photographer, shooting 100,000 pictures a year and I usually create many catalogs. I can not understand how Lightroom mobile does not allow me to sync multiple catalogs at the same time. Just leave me one and if I sync new one , it delete everything synchronized in the previous .
    This requires an urgent solution.

Then you need to tell Adobe here: Submit a feature request or bug report

  • HANA Studio: Filter more than one catalog schema

    Hi,
Simply a usability question: Is it possible to filter a list of schemas in the catalog folder of HANA studio. I see only, that I can filter one pattern of a schema name. I would like to reduce the visible schemas in the catalog folder according to an arbitrary free to be chosen list of schemas.
    Did I miss something?
    Thanks,
    Ingo

    Hello Ingo Peter,
Very interesting question but I really doubt if it is possible!
Even giving 2nd Schema name will overwrite the earlier filtered Schema

  • Can you search for more than one person in a photo

Let's say you named all the faces in iphoto and now you want to search for a photo that contains two particular people, for example I want iphoto to find all the pictures that have Bob and Mary in that shot.
Is there a way to do this. I tried and it finds Bobs and Mary's pictures but not the ones where they are together? Maybe there is a way by writing Bob + Mary and then iphoto will find all those pictures?
    Thanks

It will work with any of the smart album criteria - file menu ==> new smart album
The easiest way to see is to take a look at what is available there - and make a smart album or two - if you don't like them just drag them to the iPhoto trash and do another one

  • Search Query Help – more than one word

I have been struggling with this for weeks.  I used Dreamweaver to set up a lot of this and I think it is hindering me as I make changes to the code.
I have a search interface that takes the input from a user (in the form of text) – searches though the db to match words – then return the results based on how many times the input is located in the db.
I have this working very good for a single word input.  If you search for one word only – it works great.  But, if you try to input two words together – it returns no results.
I have tried several different things to get this to work – like exploding the input then searching the db for each word in order.  The problems I get, I think, is that this conflicts with the code Dreamweaver wrote – I think where the code requests the value string.  But, each time I think I find a fix for one error – it creates several others – not just in the php code above the header – but in the php code in the body when I try to retrieve the results.
It seems that I am just going around in circles.  But, there has to be simple way to search for more than one word in the db – count the matches – add the matches from each search together – then return the results ordered by the largest number of matches.
I have even tried using a foreach statement – but received errors that I have never seen before.  Then after researching and trying to fix those errors – just received more and more errors.
Please help.  If it cannot be done given the code I have – then please point me in the right direction to rewrite the code.
    Code is attached.

Based on what you explained as your requirements, it is very easy. I'll just speak in psuedo-code.  You will need to parse the input into seperate words. If there can be an unknown number of words you can store those in a string array.
Then just use the array to build your where clause using the IN predicate or using the = and OR operators.
    Select count(*), keyword
where keyword in (term[0], term[1], etc)
    group by keyword
    order by count(*) desc
If this is not what you meant, then you will need to explain your requirements in more detail. As you have discovered, once your requirements exceep the capabilities of DW's behaviors, you will need to become very familar with sql and your server side scripting language. If you don't understand what the DW code is doing (as evidenced by your comments in the attachment), then you really are not ready to start modifying it.

  • Is it possible to synch a folder (or image) over more than one LR catalog?

For example: I have a Lightroom catalog for business photography and a Lightroom catalog for family - occasionally I will have photos that belong in both categories, I would like to have the originals accessible by both catalogs with changes made in either catalog synchronised to the other.
    I am using LR 5.6
    thankyou,
    Michael

Sure you can... however you would be best to have just one catalog as it is tricky keeping files in more than one catalog in sync and knowing what changes have been made where and when.
Try using different Collections for business and family. I have over 500k files in one catalog....I use collections for clients and other needs.

  • Split current catalog into more than one?

I have entirely too many pictures in one PSE6 catalog.  Can I split this current catalog into more than one catalog?  If so, what is the easiest way to do so?  Thank you.

How many photos do you have?  PSE can handle a very large number, if you have then well organised.
