Search & Index tabs: double topic titles displayed

In my chm, on the Search and Index tabs, topic titles are
displayed twice. The second instance of these does not display the
topic when clicked; instead the "cannot display" error message is
shown. If there are special characters (ü, ä, ö,
etc) in the topic title these characters are displayed as a
combination of weird symbols.
I cannot find anything wrong with my help project, as far as
I can tell the topics that do not dispay do not exist in the help
project.

All topic titles in the search and index tabs are doubled;
English does not have any special characters but the English
projects are also affected.
The topics which are duplicated are only in my help projects
once.
The problem only seems to be in the chm.
The help projects are in ClearCase source control - could
this be a factor?
I have 2 separate branches of the same projects in ClearCase
and one branch (the original branch) does not have this problem.
The branch that does have the problem was created by copying the
original branch.

  • Topic Properties - Display Bookmarks

In RH7, when a topic is in Design View, the user can right-click and select "Topic Properties" from the context menu. Is it possbile to display bookmarks assoicated with an index entry on the Index tab? Presently only the topic title displays when associated with an index term.
    Thanks

I'm not sure your assumption is correct. I think the bookmark
is just a little piece of "find me here" code in the topic text.
The only tight connection is that the topic filename is part of the
    path to the bookmark.
The Project pane does display bookmarks as if they were
sub-topics, but the Project pane displays other things that aren't
properties (like image map links). So I don't think that's a
    reliable guide.
Bottom line - you're a pro (I recognize your handle), and if
you can't find a setting for this, there probably isn't one.
I wonder if one of the reports might help you manage your
    bookmark index links?

  • Search Conditional Books and Topics

When I apply a conditional build tag to a book and mixed
conditional build tags to the topics within the book, then Search,
RoboHelp searches all topics, even those with the incorrect
    conditional build tag.
Does anyone know how to limit the search to only those books
and topics with the same conditional build tag?
    Thanks.

We've got the exact same issue going on here with RoboHelp
6... can anybody shed any light on exactly how I'm supposed to keep
the Search function from finding topics that should be excluded
according to their Conditional Build tag?
Here's the breakdown, in case it helps:
    1. We publish the same help file to two different audiences
based on Conditional Build tags... some top-level books in the TOC
are generic to both audiences and some are specific to an
    individual group.
    2. We only manage custom books/topics at the top-most book
level... we either want to show an entire top-level book or we
    don't.
    3. In the TOC pane in RoboHelp 6, we apply a Conditional
Build tag to the top-level book to determine which "version" of the
project a book should appear in. This tag then cascades to all
sub-books and topics. If a top-level book appears in all versions,
    it receives no tag.
    4. In the project template we use Conditional Build tags to
    create a customized footer.
    5. On some generic topics, we use Conditional Build tags to
control the verbiage that is displayed if the page appears in a
    certain "version" of the project.
    6. We do not do any indexing or use a glossary... our users
can either browse the TOC or do a search.
    7. When publishing, we specify the Conditional Build tag and
the TOC displays as expected in the compiled output. It only
contains the desired books as specified by the Conditional Build
    tags.
    8. When searching for a term in a book/topic that does NOT
appear in the TOC (due to it having the wrong Conditional Build
tag), the search nonetheless finds those topics and displays them
when clicked in the search results list. This is WRONG, WRONG,
WRONG, and in our case, potentially dangerous as the user has no
idea that the content is not appropriate for them.
I assumed that applying the build tag to the top-level book
in step 3 is all that needed to be done. When expanding a book in
the TOC pane in RoboHelp, each individual sub-book/topic correctly
shows that the appropriate tag is applied (both through the
highlight color and right-clicking to view the Apply Conditional
    Build Tag flyout menu).
Is there anything I can do to keep the wrong topics from
appearing in the search results when Conditional Build tags are
used? Do I need to apply the correct tag individually to each and
every topic? Do I need to upgrade to RH7 to fix this egregious bug?
FYI - I tried making my build expression both exclusionary
(listing all undesired tags using NOT) and inclusionary using the
Advanced button (only listing the desired tag) and both have the
same result: inappropriate topics still display when doing a
    search.
Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide!
    ***EDIT***
It gets better... I tried deleting the inappropriate books
from the TOC and then publishing using the correct Conditional
Build tag. The wrong topics STILL appear in the search, even though
their parent books no longer appear in any version of the
    TOC!

  • Greek Fonts for TOC Book and Topic Titles

    Good Morning.
I Create o project using RoboHelp for HTML.
I rename TOC book and topic titles using greek fonts.
If i generate the project using Webhelp as layout with
Section 508 Compliant Output everything is ok at runtime but if i
use Skin TOC book and topic titles display wrong fonts on runtime.
I'd like to know if there is solution for this problem.
    Thanks for help.

    Hi Scottie
What Colum proposed is the standard answer we have been giving for years and presently it's likely the best approach.
However, Adobe does listen to their customers. And I've seen this particular issue cropping up time and again through the years. So I'm going to suggest to you that you and everyone else wanting to see some changes here consider submitting a Wish Form to ask for a new capability. Ask Adobe to devise a way to allow the user to print in the manner you are seeking.

  • How to apply conditional build tags to the topic title that is displayed in Search tab of CHM?

I have the project in which 2 different words are used to reffer to one objects (this word/term depends on the customer). All other information related to functionality, steps, etc. are common. So:
In the help content (body of the files), I created 2 conditional build tags (CBT) for these terms.
In TOC, if topic title contains the term, I created 2 different topics reffered to the single topic file, but the title of the topic shows correct term (depends on CBT).
File names of this topics contain only term1.
The problem occurs when I generate CHM for CBT2 and search for the term1 (marked with CBT1) using the Search tab. All occurrencies where term1 presence in the file name, appear in the found results.
How can I resolve the issue?
These topics must be found by search (that's why "Exclude from search" option is not a decision).

Ahhh, you are correct. I believe it was Version 10 introduced that.
So here's what I'd suggest. Even though you are unable to use a variable in a Topic Title, it can still be used in other places such as the TOC, the Index and in the Topic content. So I'd still recommend that you declare and use a variable for those items. Just to simplify things.
As for any topics that have the term in the title, you could create two topics. One with the term one way and the other with the term the opposite way. Then use a Conditional Build Tag to exclude and remove the one that shouldn't be found.
This may cause you a bit of a maintenance issue by having the same topic content in more than one place. (one for each topic)
So to overcome that, you would be able to add the main body information to a topic and use an Inline Frame in the two topics that would then simply be shells with appropriate Topic Titles. Either that or declare a snippet and use the snippet in both topics. Put the main part in the snippet.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Search Tab in WebHelp Not Displaying Any Topics

Let me preface this thread by saying that I JUST figured out the answer to my own problem. I tried to post this thread about 2 hours ago, but the forum was having issues...I got unexpected errors, and such. Although I figured out the answer a moment ago, I wanted to post the thread anyway, in case others come across the same problem, they will know how to fix it.
The Search tab in WebHelp doesn't work. No matter what I do, no topics will display when I enter search terms that I *know* are in the Help system. I have another project on the same computer, and the Search tab in that project works fine. I tried to attach screenshots, but keep getting an "unexpected error," so I gave up. But basically, if I enter a search term and click Go, "No topics found" displays.
When the WebHelp is being generated for this project, the following displays in the Output View:
    "Processing Full-text-search data...
    Finished processing Full-Text-Search data in 0 sec(s)"
It looks like something that is needed in order to do the full-text-search is missing, but I have no idea what. I have read several threads in the forums regarding Search tab issues that others have had.
    I have:
        * Ensured that the itss.dll and itircl.dll are registered and in my C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder
        * Confirmed that I have keyhelp.ocx and hhctrl.ocx in my C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder
        * Used the same browser to view the WebHelp output for both projects (firefox 3.6.18)
        * Checked the project settings - they match
        * Checked everything in the WebHelp Settings window - General, Content Categories, Navigation, Search and Publish - everything matches in both projects
        * Tried creating a new webhelp layout, selecting a different skin...
    everything, to no avail.
When the WebHelp is being generated for the project where the Search tab works, the following displays in the Output View:
    "Processing Full-text-search data...
    Finished processing Full-Text-Search data in 115 sec(s)
I can't understand why the Search tab works in one project, but not the other project. See the diagnostic report below. According to the report, the only thing I don't have (and don't know how to get) is MS Help 2. But why would my search work in one project and not the other, despite not having MS Help 2? Both project have the same settings and I'm generating the same output - WebHelp. Any ideas why my Search tab works in one project, but not my other project?
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

NOTE: In my original post, I forgot to include the diagnostic report that was produced by using the diagnostics tool mentioned in other threads where forum members were having problems with the Search tab, so here it is (just so that this thread is complete)...

  • Different Color Text of Topic Titles by Child Project in Search Results List

Does anyone know how I can change the text color to indicate the source project of a topic as displayed in the Search Results list?
I have followed Peter Grainge's directions for setting up a parent project that has several child projects, one of which contains outdated version-specific information. Thanks, Peter!
I would like it to be obvious to the user before they open a topic from the Search Results list that it is from the old legacy project.
I have found where the font is set, (thanks to the RoboWizard), but I am not a Javascript programmer and am uncertain how to code the "if document is from this project, then use this font" logic.
I would also like to put a "caption" below the "Search Results per page" line to explain the purpose of the color change.
I am using RoboHelp HTML 8.0.2. I generate WebHelp output which is then FTP'd to our server.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Leon,
Let me make sure that I understand your suggestion - I should change the title of each topic in the "legacy" knowledge base so that they each include a short identifier, such as "First Topic - Legacy"? If so, I suppose that would work, but I'd have to change 1,000 topics. The topic titles would no longer match the filenames (I'm trying to freeze changes to the old knowledge base to which there are many links from our user forum), which I suppose is not a big concern at this point.  I'll run some tests.
That has also raised another question in my mind, but I'll post that separately. It's about the way Robohelp selects the text that is shown immediately after the title of the topic in the Search Results list.
Thanks for taking the time to help!

  • Character display issue in French Web index tab

First of all, I'm working with RoboHelp 8.
There is a character display issue in the index tab of the web help. (See screenshot below)
The apostrophe, instead of displaying by itself, it has a backslash just before it: \'
In the hhk file, I started using the actual apostrophe ('), then replaced it with ' and finally tried '
(The htm files use utf-8 encoding). None of those options seemed to solve the issue.
    Any help will be appreciated.

    Hi Steve,
Thanks for a very quick response. The problem is that the Title (name of the image filename is also the item number in Quote) and this is always not null. I am not sure how do I test whether the image is present in $OA_MEDIA directory or not. Does BI Publisher provide a way to find out whether an image filename exists in $OA_MEDIA or not.
If there is no such standard way provided by BI Publsher, then I guess I will have to write Java function that executes in the middle tier and returns whether file exists with that name in $OA_MEDIA.
Please let me know your view.
    Thanks

  • Adding keywords to a topic causes search to return file names instead of topic titles

When I search for a term in my WebHelp Pro project, the topics returned are shown by file name if the topic has anything in its Properties > General > Keywords field and are shown by topic title if there are no keywords defined for the topic.
I've confirmed this behavior by adding and removing keywords from topics and watching them alternate between being shown in searches by file name or by topic title.
Obviously, I want topics to be displayed by topic titles in search results no matter if they have keywords assigned or not.
Any idea what would be causing this? Is this a known bug?
Here's some additional information. For this problem to occur, these four conditions must be true:
The topic must have manually added keyword(s) in the Properties > General > Keywords field.
The topic title and the file name must be different.
One must be searching for one of the keyword(s) added in step 1.
Occurs in WebHelp Pro when published to a remote server.
Talks with Adobe today are inconclusive but it appears that this was an unknown bug. Maybe I'll get a free t-shirt or something.

    Hi Rocky,
Log on to the Robohelp Configuration Manager
Uncheck the option "reindex documents at server".
Republish and check. If issue exists try restarting the Apache/Tomcat Server.
    That should work for you.
    Regards,
    Robbie

  • Index tab not displaying in RoboHelp HTML

I'm using Robohelp HTML version 8.
When viewing a topic properties, the General and Advanced tabs are displayed, but I haven't found how to display the Index tab in this version.
Is this option not available in version 8?
    Regards,

Hi Cecil27 and welcome to the RH community.
Are you only seeing those two tabs? You should be seeing others as well (e.g. Status, File, See Also). Also where is your project located? If it is on a network drive, move it to a local drive and see if the problem still occurs.

  • Indexing Topic Titles (anyway to automate this?)

    Hello,
Is there any way to automatically index topic titles as
titles, without RH breaking them down into individual
    keywords?

    Hi there TWKC
Not really. You *COULD* accomplish it by editing the "Phrase
List" file to include all the Topic Titles. But that would be as
much work as simply indexing them individually.
On second thought, have you tried just displaying the Topic
List, selecting all the topics, clicking and dragging into the pane
area where the Index keywords are listed? I'm thinking that should
    do it.
How is JWS these days anyway? (I once worked there - Back in
    2000/2001)

  • Index tab displays no keywords

    RoboHelp for Word Version 5
When RoboHelp broke our Help (images did not display), we rolled back to 5 to meet our deadline and troubleshoot later.
WinHelp works as before; however, now when we compile WebHelp, the Index tab displays no keywords below the word wheel.
When I type in the word wheel, I see some keywords in a popup list, but when I select a keyword, it neither appears in results below nor displays the relevant topics to the right.
    Please help.

Hi aecspades and welcome to the RH community.
This could be because the index keywords have not be added to the project's index file. If you go into your project settings (File > Project Settings) you'll find an option there which I bet is set to add keywords to the topics. For the index tab to display you must have keywords added to the HHK file.

  • Topic titles in Search always showing up in English

We are working with a RoboHelp HTML v8 project with 247 topics.  Inside each topic, we are using conditional build tags to mark the content for each language inside each topic.  So for each topic file, it has a section of English text, French text, German text, etc.  Each marked with a build tag indicative of the language.  When I compile each CHM file for each language and open one of the non-English help files and click on Search and enter text, the topic titles shown are in English.  If you click on one of those in the list, you see the preview of that topic with the appropriate translation shown.  My question is if there is a way to get a translated topic title to show in the search results list instead of the English text?
The only way I see to do this is to create multiple topic files (a new topic file for each language for each existing topic file in our project).  I would rather avoid having to do this.  Is there any other way of doing it?  Thanks!

  • RH 9 Search Ignores Some Words in Topic Title

    RoboHelp 9.0.0.228/Server 9
    WebHelp Pro
RH 9 Server reports indicates that end-users are not finding topics using keywords "kaiser" and "backorder."  There are topics that contain these words and the words are actually included in each of  the topic titles.
    I checked the following:
Project settings.  These words are not on stop list nor the ignore list.
Topic properties.  The "exclude from search" box is not checked.
FYI - project was upgraded from RH x5 to RH 9.
Any suggestions on resolving this issue?
    Thank you,
    Eva

    Hi Eva.
What happens if you search for those keywords when you launch the help via the Web Administrator? If they don't show up there, try generating webhelp output and seeing if they show in that. If they do, I'd delete the output from the server and republish to make sure you have an absolutely clean search database.
If none of this works, can you see if there is some rhyme or reason behind this. For example are all the unfound search terms from one RH project? What other search terms in those projects do work? That sort of thing.

  • Underscore randomly replaces forward slash in topic file names and topic titles

The problem I'm seeing is similar to the discussion at http://forums.adobe.com/message/2564701 which dealt with random insertion of underscores in topic titles. That problem seemed restricted to underscores replacing spaces in Topic File names and was solved (for some people at least) by deselecting the setting   "Tools > Options > General > Use underscores in filenames." Playing with that setting has not worked for me when it comes to unwanted replacement of forward slashes.
I'm running RoboHelp 9 and linking from FrameMaker 10. The unwanted underscores are seen in (1) the RH project and (2) the help output:
    (1) In RH project in some topic titles like this:
I want to keep the forward slash. The upper topic title is wrong and the bottom one is correct.
    (2) In AIR Help output: search results and in the tab that appears above the breadcrumbs in the main right pane.
I cant change the titles prior to generating output because, as Matt Sullivan wrote in the similar discussion, "...for topics created from linked FrameMaker 9 files, the Topic Title is not editable from the Topic Properties. If it was, at least I could change the offending titles prior to final generation of output. (though the titles would revert on the next update of the FrameMaker source content)."
I've double-checked the source FrameMaker documents and I can find no difference between Headings in which the forward slash is retained (desired) and those in which the forward slash is replaced by an underscore (unwanted).  Has anyone else seen this?
    Thanks,
    Matt

Isn't the issue here that RH is creating filenames AND topic titles based on the FM title. Because of the slash it is saying that is an illegal character it changes the filename and the title in RH is based on that, hence both change.
I don't know if that can be changed but now you can test to see if that is what is happening.
