Search itunes library by account name

i have gathered many songs over the years. often i will get a message saying i can not play a song because i am not authorized.
i woud like to clean the library once and for all.
how can i search or sort by account name or purchased by?

It might be possible, but it's not a simple modification. The script extracts the purchaser's name via a shell script using grep, so to change it so that the playlist is named for the iTunes Store account name, someone would have to be able to figure out how to extract the account name via a grep. That's not something I have yet figured out. You could email Doug and ask if this is something he could consider for a future version:

  • How do i share my itunes library across accounts on my Mac mini server?

got the new server for the holidays and I migrated my entire itunes library from my old PC.  It was my expectation that the accounts on the server would all have access to the same library, however, that does not appear to be the case.  When my son logged in and we opened iTunes, the library was empty.
clearly the default is that each user would have their own library.  What do I need to do for the library to be visible to all of the accounts?  And what, if anything do I need to do so that additional accounts automatically have the correct iTunes library loaded?
    Thanks
    Rob

    Is this 10.8 Server?

  • Sharing iTunes library across accounts on same computer

    Hi
I have just bought my first Mac. I have set up an account for me and an account for my wife but I'm wondering if it is possible for us to share the same iTunes library rather than having a lot of duplicate music. Can this be done?
    Thanks in advance
    Graeme

Oh yes, welcome to Apple, and the Apple forums,
I hope you enjoy your new iMac,
Well, the bad news is I don't think that will work, when I tried it one my computer, one User couldnt access the other's Music folder. However, I do think you could make your iTunes Music Folder be a folder in the Public folder for your account, which would allow anyone on your computer, or on your network, to use it.
To change the location of your music folder to a folder in your Public folder, follow these steps:
-Go to your Music folder (Users-Username-Music)
    -Copy the folder called "iTunes"
-Go to that User's Public folder (User-Username-Public)
-Paste your iTunes folder here (depending on the size of the folder, this may take a while)
-In iTunes, go to: iTunes-Preferences-Advanced, and look at the "iTunes Music Folder Location"
-Click the word "Change..." next to it, and choose the new folder (the one you made in the Public folder)( you only have to do this on the account that alread has the music if you want to delete the orignal music folder to save space otherwise leave it as the one in the Music folder for this account)
-Do this for the other account on your Computer, by selecting the same folder in the first user's Public Folder as the new Music Folder.
-Select "Consolidate Library..." from the Advanced menu (not the Advanced menu n Preferences, the one on the bear at the top of the Monitor), this will copy the music from the folder into that iTunes Library.
I sure hope no one else posted an answer while I wrote this, hope it helps.
Edit: I will test this as well.

  • I want to remove a friends itunes library and account from my hp netbook

A friend set up their original account on my pc; how do I remove it? I don't want their library or account on my hardware... a reinstall of itunes made no difference.
    Thanks

Several ways.  Easiest it probably copy whole iTunes folder to a different location.  Start iTunes while holding down the option/alt key, select the iTunes Library.itl file in the duplicated folder then delete what you don't want.
Yu can also create a new, blank library using the above method.  Export playlist from library 1, restart iTunes with library 2, import playlist.
I don't have iTunes Match.  I'm not sure how it will react to a second library.

  • Sharing itunes library across accounts on the same IMac

How do you share your ITunes library with other accounts on the same IMac? There's clear advice how to share it with other networked computers, but how do you do it across accounts on the same IMac?

You can copy the desired library to the shared folder.
You then need to go to each iTunes app. in the various users and change the iTunes music folder location.

  • How do you share one Itunes library between accounts in the same computer?

I have a new I-mac and I set up my Itunes library on the main account in the I-tunes folder, as a default. I set up a second account for my wife - how can I share the music in the main library without having to transfer it to a separate folder under her username?

  • Transfer iTunes Library Between Accounts

I realize this should be simple, but...
I have an iMac; my wife has a Macbook Pro. Our iTunes library is on my iMac and was under my account with Home Share enabled. Since she couldn't create and maintain playlists from her Macbook, she would log onto my account to change them and update her iPhone. I grew tired of her changing things on my account, so I transferred all songs to a new account on my iMac by dragging the shared folder into "Music" in iTunes on the new account. All 11,000 + songs transferred, no problem. Then I created a .xml file from the old account (File ==> Library ==> Export Library) and imported that file into the new account (File ==> Library ==> Import Playlist). That recreated all of the playlists, but only imported a few of the play counts, date purchased, etc. Maybe 1% updated. I checked the .xml file in text edit - all of the information is present. Is there a way to make it work?
    Many thanks!

People have high hopes for that XML file, and those hopes are almost always disappointed.
A better approach is to simply make a copy of your entire iTunes folder and put it on the computer she uses. (If your library is not already consolidated, run Consolidate before you do the copy.)
That folder contains the library data as well as the content. After you do the copy she will have an exact replica of the library, including playlists, playcounts, etc. From that point on, she can start making playlists or adding, deleting, and modifying as she wishes, without affecting yours.
As you acquire new content, if the other likes it too, put a copy there via home sharing or other convenient means.

  • Sharing itunes library between accounts

Hi my mom has just got an ipod for Christmas and wants to load up her songs. We share a computer but have separate accounts. She wants to have many (but not all) of the same songs that I have. Is it possible to share my itunes library with her so she doesn't have to reload all the CDs that we both like?

I did what the instructions said in the article "+Itunes:How to share music between accounts on a single computer"+ and I can see the music from my account but still cannot see it from my Mom's account.
Sorry about the double post, it was my first ever post and I thought I had it in the wrong place and could not see how to delete it.
Thanks for your help so far

  • Share iTunes library among accounts

Hi there, my iTunes library is placed on a FW drive where mine and my wife's accounts have read/write access. So we both "theoretically" share the library.
The problem is: I add new music to the library - for instance iTunes plus music - from my account, when I switch to my wife's account it doesn't show the last added, so I have to re-add the music...
Is there a way to share the library "actively", so that I don't have to add music to the same library from each account?
    Thank you
    F.

This is the most simple way to share between your snow leapord and bootcamp windows 7. i deem this method the 'safest & correct method' of adding ' literally sharing' your library between different OSs.
    part 1
    1. on itunes software under bootcamp windows 7, go to edit > perferences.
    2. go to under advance tab, look at itunes media folder location.
    3. change it to: e:\users\username\music\itunes\itunes media.
    4. uncheck keep itunes media folder organized.
    5. uncheck copy files to itunes media folder when adding to library.
    6. hit ok.
    part 1 easily completed!
    final part =D
    7. on itunes software under bootcamp windows 7, go to file > library > import playlist
    8. point your default itunes software under snowleapord playlist: e:\users\username\music\itunes\itunes music library.xml
    9. now just sit back and wait while it imports the library!
    final part easily completed!
    enjoy!

  • How to share iTunes library between accounts

Lots of various ways have been sugested but none kinda work the easy way i was looking for. So, here's what i did and it works great... so far. (sorry if this is a repeat of something somebody has already said, if so I didn't find it):
1- moved the iTunes music folder to the shared folder (probably not neccessary anymore but it will stay there...)
2- changed the pref in iTunes under advance to find this new path. (in both accounts)
    3- downloaded BatChmod
4- draged both user folders over the utility icone (one at a time) and checked marked all settings to give max permissions to both accounts. also checked both autor/owner and unlock then applied. (now all I have and all my wife has under each accounts are totaly accessible by both)
5- Since my account had the latest version of the iTunes library file I alt/command draged an alias into the other acount. Deleted the existing iTunes library file.
Tested and works great... if i make a change it's noticible in both accounts and vice versa.
    Hope this helps

    iMac G5 20" iSight   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Cubi,
I apologize in advance for bothering you, but I am having problems. These are the steps I followed:
    1. Moved Itunes Music Folder to shared folder and changed location of music folder in Itunes Preferences to point to the shared folder in both user accounts. My library is the only one currently on the system.
    2. Downloaded and ran BatChmod on entire user (house icon) for both me (User 1) and then logged into User 2 and ran BatChmod on entire User 2 house icon. As suggested I checked every box on the BatChmod utility including auto/owner and unlock and then applied.
    3. Created Alias of Itune Library file in User 1 (my) directory and copied it into User 2's ITunes Music Directory, removed Alias extension and deleted existing ITunes Library file in User 2's account.
The files are currently organized as:
    - User 1 (seth) ITunes Account contains:
    - ITunes Library data file
    - ITunes Music Folder
    - ITunes Music Library.xml
    - Shared ITunes Folder contains:
    - ITunes Music Folder
    - User 2 ITunes Account contains:
    - ITunes Library data file (former ALIAS - arrow indicates still alias)
    - ITunes Music Library.xml
When I (User 1) open ITunes, everything works fine and I see my playlists and library. However, when I try to open Itunes logged in as User 2, I get the following error message: "ITunes music library file is locked, on a locked disk or you don't have permission to access it."
I already ran BatChmod so I followed your suggestion and went to Command-I and insured that all Ownership, Permissions and Details state that Owner, Group and Others all have "Read & Write" permissions. Its still not working.
Any suggestion what I am doing wrong? Did I make it overly complex? Sorry to bother but your instructions make it seem really easy.

  • ITunes - Possible to share iTunes Library between accounts?

    Hello all,
I'm an experienced Mac user but am currently setting up a new iMac for my family. I've never had more than one user account because I'm the only one who uses my macbook but now my family wants 3 different user accounts for the new iMac in their home.
Because I only use my one user account at home, I never thought about the fact that different user accounts would also split up iTunes music libraries. If I import music from a CD, I would like that to be accessible and available when using any 1 of the 3 user accounts. Is this possible?
For example, my mother and father purchase CDs together...so they both own the same albums. They want to share music on the iMac, but if I import discs twice it takes up twice the amount of time and much more importantly twice the amount of space. How can I get around this??? Can one user access another users iTunes library and make that the default folder?
Thanks for your help as always!!

    Try this thread.
    Bottom post, should work.

  • How to export itunes library to mp3 (names & folders intact)

    Hi,
I cant seem to find a solution to my problem. A family member has her music all stored on iTunes, however she now needs it taken off her old laptop. She is wanting it converted to mp3, is this possible?
I read I can select the tracks and export to mp3...but I would like to keep the track names and folder names intact. Basically, I would like an exact copy, but as mp3?
Is this possible? Even if I need software, I dont mind...hope I explained that well enough.
Thanks in advance, Im a total itunes noob.

There are two slightly different questions in there...
Moving an iTunes library to a new computer
These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Note if you have failed to move contacts and calendar items across you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.
    Converting media to mp3
Generally you don't need to convert media files to a different format but if you plan to use an mp3 only player then it may be necessary. Converting from one lossy format to another will lose a bit of fidelity. You should only convert files of a different format, and there is no point converting to a higher bit rate, so it may make sense to use a smart playlist to select specific files to target for conversion together, e.g. 256k aac files to be converted to 256k mp3. The new files will have the same filenames (will a different extension) and be stored in the same folders as the originals, and the library will contain duplicate copies of each track. If you want to permanently swap formats and replace the originals then my script ConvertFormat should do the trick.

  • Searching iTunes library by grouping or genre

I have recently switched from PC to Mac, and have an extensive music library on my computer. I often group records by label using the 'grouping' box, which can help me find a record if I remember which label it is on, but not the exact name of the artist.
I have always been able to use the search box by entering the label name, but since I've started using my Mac, I am restricted to Artist, Album, Composer or Song. While there is also an All function, if I enter any other information than Artist, Album, Composer or Song, I do not get anything back, even when I am sure of the spelling of the label's name, and this despite having the Grouping column showing. I have a PC at work also with the latest version of iTunes, and I still can search by Grouping.
Does anyone know how I can change this?
I use iTunes 10.0.1 (22) on Snow Leopard.
    Thanks

Anakonda, that's what's puzzling me. When searching All on my Mac, the only results that I get are Artists, Albums, Composers and Songs, none of the other columns seem to be searchable. I do get the same search options on PC, but I can search for more when All is selected.
I've been through all the iTunes settings as I thought it may be something configurable from there, but it's either I missed it completely, or it is just not there. Could it be something to do with the Spotlight config?

  • Multiple iphones, 1 itunes library, 1 account - how to share ratings?

    Hi all,
My husband and I share one itunes account, one music library and we log into the computer with one account. We have the same music available on our iphones which we rate - than delete the rest (from the library and the computer).
Problem comes when one syncronizes the phone and ratings which get overwritten by the other's choices. We've tried one of us using the ratings, the other adding a special genre hoping that it would somehow be merged. I am not quite sure though, what's the rule - I would have thought that the ratings are overwritten only if the second one is higher, or genre is updated only if the second one has something chosen or an added comment overwrites the empty area..
We have also tried creating playlists on the phones, adding these playlists to the main library, adding the ratings afterwares, syncronize it with the songs located in the main library.. Not sure what overwrites.
Would anyone have a solution? I'd be much appreciated, thanks!

Your iTunes account can be authorised on up to 5 computers at any one time (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1420). You can also use home sharing so as to share your content between computers or to listen/watch content on your iOS devices : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3819 (you can also copy music between computers via home sharing)
As long as you use the same iTunes account as you originally used to buy/download them then you don't have to pay to re-download (or download on different computers/devices) past purchases of apps or ibooks (or music if you are in the USA) as long as they are still available in the store : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519.
You can also manually copy music/apps/ibooks/films/tv shows between computers and then do File > Add File To Library (or Add Fold) in iTunes so as to add them.

  • Can you search iTunes library in one category - search only artists, etc.?

I am using iTunes 7.5 (19). I want to search through my artist names only, but the search pulls up anything with my keywords in it - song titles, album titles, etc. Is there any option for searching only a single column of information?

    Hi tzikeh,
In the iTunes search box is a small triangle. Click on it and you have will the option to search by,
    All, Artist, Album or Name.
