Search lands at rightmost end of Cover Flow instead of leftmost start

This is driving me crazy. Lately when I type in a search into iTunes, the search results come up in Cover Flow like they should EXCEPT it lands me at rightmost end of Cover Flow instead of leftmost start point. This is annoying because this usually means I end up in the mess of Various Artist compilations instead of at the start of the Artist's collection.
Why? And how can I change it. Thanks.

You can use whatever tool you prefer - for someone already using emacs, emacs is a natural choice. Simple, easy to use online tools exist e.g. http://schneegans.de/sv/
Just upload the file in question ('Validate by file upload' option) and click 'Validate':

Googling 'xml validation' should give you some more tools / services if this one is not good enough.

  • Album art moved to end of cover flow for no apparent reason....

This happens on my 80gb iPod only. Not on iTunes. iTunes shows all the album art in the coverflow in alphabetical order like its suppose to be. Albums such as: Deftones - "self titled", The Mars Volta - Frances The Mute, Kanye West - Graduation, Placebo - Meds, Taking Back Sunday - Where You Want To Be. Among around 15 others.
All album info seem to match up, but for some reason, they are all located at the end of the coverflow on my iPod not in line with the other albums from the same artists.
Anybody know why this happens and how to fix this annoying little thing?
    thanks,

sorry for the double post. XD

iTunes gets those tags from the Gracenote database. Whoever entered the info, set them as compilations.
Why aren't songs with the same album art grouped together?

  • Cover Flow - Albums at the End?

Cover Flow works well enough for me, it's just that there's a load (about 10-15) albums at the end of the list that aren't in any alphabetical order i.e. they're after Z and they're just in a random jumble.
Is there any way to sort this, as it looks messy and the jumble includes some of my favourite albums.

I have about 30 albums at the end of cover flow that are not compilations.
In iTunes select the Music source and then enter the album title for one of your preoblem albums in the search box. Is Compilations listed among the possible artists for the album? One track marked as part of a compilation would be enough to make the album cover appear at the end of cover flow in the compilations section and, becuase iPod shows all tracks with the same album title, it will list all the tracks when you turn it over to pick a track.

  • ITunes and iPod Classic Cover Flow Discrepancies

    Hello.
I'm a little impatient and haven't searched through most of the posts to see if this problem has been addressed already. But it's an unusual one (I think).
I got the 160GB iPod and have been able to upload all my music successfully, as well as getting all the cover flow artwork to run smoothly. But now I've been noticing some strange things. When I got a new CD, for example M.I.A.'s 'Kala', I uploaded it onto my iTunes library, and it fell into place nicely next to her other album 'Arular'. But after uploading the new track to my iPod, I can't find 'Kala' next to 'Arular' in cover flow - instead it's way at the end, past the number and symbol titled artists. This was also true for another CD that I recently uploaded, and even more strangely, for some older single tracks that I haven't even listened to yet.
So, basically my iTunes library looks fine in cover flow, but there are a few albums and tracks that aren't in the correct order on my iPod. I've even tried deleting those misplaced albums and tracks from my iPod and then re-uploading them from my iTunes library, but they fall in the same place, at the very very end of the cover flow list.
And, this is just a cover flow problem - in the regular 'Artists' lists, the albums and tracks in question are in their appropriate spot.
Anyone know what might be wrong?
    Thanks

It looks that the album, in your example "Kala", is marked like a compilation. In the iPod coverflow, the compilations appears at the end.

  • Cover flow albums show songs from multiple albums

I love my iPod classic. the only issue I'm having is that when reviewing some albums via the coverflow feature, about 5 albums shows songs from multiple albums. they play correctly. It appears just the listing is messed up. I've tried deleting, adding the albums back to the library and resyncing, but it's still happening. Anybody seen this?

Try *One cover, too many tracks* below:
    *HowTo: Grouping Tracks Into Albums*
Excuse the long post, but hopefully covering all the bases (that I can think of) will help you fix the other issues you are likely to run into as you try to organise your iTunes library.
    *Use an album friendly view*
iTunes will let you sort music on many columns, some of which are unlikely to group albums together or put the tracks in their normal order. The most useful order for editing the library is probably *Album by Artist*. If you're not already there, select the list view and click on the column heading for Artist until it reads Album by Artist.
    *One cover, too many tracks*
The iPod (and iTunes to a lesser extent) conflates two or more albums with the same title, most obviously with *Greatest Hits*. On the iPod this can result in one album acting as a combination of two or more. Selecting any cover gives all the tracks of all albums with the same title. The workaround for this "Greatest Hits" bug is to give each album a unique title - I tend to go for *Album - Album Artist* as this reads clearly in the iTunes browser. Alternatively you could use the wording as it appears on the cover or append different numbers of spaces for each different album. Somewhat oddly, setting different values for Sort Album doesn't work.
*Missing Artist or Album not with others by same artist*
iTunes relies on the Gracenote CDDB database when identifying CD's. This often marks collections or anthologies of an artist's work as a compilation. In iTunes, however, the compilation flag has the logical function of grouping together tracks with the same album name, but different artists on each track, e.g. "Now That's What I Call Metal 666!". These compilations are then all grouped together at the end of cover flow. Most of us however, would expect "Greatest Hits" albums to be listed with the other albums by the same album artist. For albums which are essentially by a single album artist or group it is best to set the appropriate value for the album artist and clear the compilation flag.
    *One album, too many covers*
For true compilations, where each track is by a different artist, the answer is to set the compilation flag to true and enable the iTunes preference to *Group compilations when browsing*. If the album is not a compilation however, any tracks which list guest artists may be treated as separate items. Filling in the Album Artist field is enough to link things in iTunes. Sadly, however, the iPod ignores the Album Artist field when grouping albums so this is only a partial solution. You can simply mark the entire album as a compilation which seems to be the way iTMS handles it, however that's not an ideal fix. Short of waiting for Apple to address this issue (and as far as I can tell it goes back to the 1st gen. of iPods) we need a workaround. What I do is to put any additional artist info. in square brackets after the song name. E.g. *Track \[Feat. Guest\]* and then set *Artist=Album Artist* for each track. For anthologies where the Album Artist is credited as part of another group, e.g. for Cream tracks on an Eric Clapton anthology, I use *Track \[As Group\]*. For a track where the main Album Artist doesn't receive a credit, e.g. the first track of the Slim Shady LP credited to Jeff Bass, I just set the track name to *Track \[Guest\]* while still setting the artist to the album artist. N.b. I use square brackets to indicate that this is information about the track as distinct from the song title and also use this style for Mix/Live/Bonus info.
*One album, still too many covers*
iTunes may split albums into two or more sections if some tracks from the album have different values for Artist, Album Artist, Album, No. of Discs or Part of a Compilation. Tiny differences such as trailing spaces, accented characters or variants of symbols can sometimes be quite hard to spot. The iPod is also more sensitive to case variations and may split or reorder an album that looks okay in iTunes. Normally overtyping the desired value for each shared field will complete the grouping of the album into one entity. Occasionally, however, this method seems to fail. When this happens I've found that you can force every field to update properly by adding some extra text - e.g. a trailing X, which once applied seems to complete the joining of the tracks into one album. Once this has happened the extra data can be removed and the album should remain properly grouped.
*Tried that, there are STILL too many covers!*
The Sort Artist, Sort Album & Sort Album Artist fields can be used to override the normal sort order. For example iTunes automatically drops leading articles (a/an/the) so "The Beatles" are arranged under "B" instead of "T". Occasionally different tracks from the same album can have different values in these sort fields which can also break up the grouping. Making the sort columns visible in iTunes can help with spotting & correcting such problems.
    *One cover for multi-disc album*
Multi-disc albums are often listed as *Album (CD1)* for CD 1, *Album (CD2)* for CD 2 etc. To display these properly using just one cover, each disc should have the correct *Disc X of Y* values set, and then the entire album should be given the single title Album. Being somewhat obsessive I also renumber the tracks sequentially, working backwards from the last track (so that no two tracks ever have the same number) until I reach disc 1. BTW You can still give the individual discs different artwork should it be relevant so that the correct artwork will be displayed as the album progresses.
    *One artist, many names*
With some artists, particularly classical composers, you should be aware of alternative representations of their names. E.g. 2Pac vs. Tupac. The menus will work best if for each artist you standardise on just one form of their name. E.g. make a choice between Mozart, W.A. Mozart or Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and then apply it consistently. For classical music I tend also to use the Composer as the Artist & Album Artist and either discard the performer details or place these into the Comments field.

  • Cover flow all wrong

Hi there, I've just bought an ipod Classic 120gb and everything's fine aside from having 40 odd albums at the end of the cover flow completely out of alphabetical order. Some are compilations but most aren't and nothing that I've read on this problem seems to help at all; for instance Abba 'Gold' is at the back but under file and get info it's down as Abba artist Abba blah blah so why is not first in the list? This isn't 'Apple' surely, please help...

    Hi,
There are two likely causes for the symptoms you decribe, detailed in the two sections of the post I pointed out. First make sure the album is not marked as Compilation. Select all the tracks of one of the problem albums, Get info. then on the options tab make sure *Part of a compilation* reads No, tick the checkbox even if it already says No. Click OK. I don't use my iPod in manual mode but I presume iTunes will do tag modifications in manual mode. Second possibility revolves around the various "Sort" fields which can be used to override the natural sorting order for albums and artists. Take *The Clash* for example. iTunes will normally set a Sort Artist value of "Clash" so the band is listed under C instead of T. You can put your own value for sort artist, e.g. "ZZZZ Clash", would normally force them towards the end of Cover flow or the Artists menu. Check what values, if any, these fields have to see if they could be causing the problem. It might also pay to reset your ipod as this will sometimes fix errors in the way it lists things.

  • Cover flow gone wrong

    Hi,
I'm really confused as to why my cover flow has become very distorted. Everything else on my iTunes is fine apart from when I view my album covers in cover flow all I get is a mass of black, white and colored lines. Even the scroll bar and text at the bottom is like this. The problem also occours when I try to view previews of films in the iTunes store. I have tried re-installing the new version of iTunes, deleting all the album covers and putting them back on again and even deleting my entire music library from my computer. However it does not affect my iPod touch's cover flow. Can anybody help me fix it!???

  • 80g Classic: Cover Flow Not In Alphabetical Order

Actually, most of it is in alphabetical order. But I have an album by "Mandalay" that shows up last (yup, after the "Z" artists) when in cover flow. Also an album by "Ohgr" shows up twice, both with the complete set of songs (1st instance is correct alphabetically, but shows up a 2nd instance way towards the end in cover flow). Plus a couple other artists with the same "alphabetically-challenged" metadata. I've typed and re-typed every single meta-data and tags several times to no avail. I've even deleted them then put them back but the issue persists. Anyone have any idea?

The albums that come up last are probably marked as compilations.

  • Ipod never keeps cover flow in correct format

Basically, my cover flow never stays in the proper order. i will find artists that start with A at the end of cover flow. please help me.

  • Cover flow and playing music

Hi, can some one try this with their touch and tell me what happens?
Start a song, while song is playing, go to cover flow mode and just start flicking to next album arts. After about 20 seconds of flicking, song will just stop. I tried this over and over and song just stops. Is this a bug?
    thanks

Nope, I did that and my music still continues to play. So I don't think it's a bug. Try reseting you touch.

  • Visualizer and cover flow crash iTunes in Leopard

I don't know what's happening, but both WERE working fine shortly after I got my late 07 BlackBook. I checked out the new visualizers, I checked out cover flow in full screen, and all was well.
At some point something happened that prevents visualizers from starting or cover flow from working. Starting or selecting either will cause iTunes to hang until it quits or (most of the time) I have to force quit iTunes.
Most of the time I click "Report" and I don't even get the dialog window to send the report to apple. Everything else seems to work fine. Audio and video playback and video playback at full screen.
I tried removing ALL plugins from HD > Library > iTunes > iTunes Plugins. Then restarting. Still didn't work. I put them back. Still. The folder User > Library > iTunes > iTunes Plugins was empty and still is.
    Admins:
Is that something that Apple will take a support call for? my BlackBook is only two months old and well within the warranty period. I need some help!

  • IPod Classic Cover Flow Listing

My apologies up front, as I'm new to all this. I just got an iPos Classic and started using iTunes 9 to load it up. I have loaded hundreds of albums and enjoy the "Cover Flow" feature, but I'm baffled by the order. An album by various artists, e.g., "The Concert for New York City," shows up as artist "Adam Sandler," as he is the first artist on the album alphabetically. Every track on the album has got "Album Artist" set to "Various Artists," which is how I want it to show up on Cover Flow, instead of by tune artist. Any way to change this?

You'll also need to set *Part of a Complilation* to Yes. See http://samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/grouping.asp for more info.

  • No Cover flow for Search History in Safari 6.1

Just upgraded to Safari 6.1 and can't search my history using the visual (coverflow) method anymore? I use that all the time here at work. Please tell me there's a way to get it working again, because looking at a page full of URLs does NOT help!

Cover flow is gone and there is no option to turn it back on (as far as I have found).  It should be an option for those of us that used it.  Here may be an alternative way though to get the screenshots from your browsing history.  Go to the Finder's Spotlight (upper right magnifying glass).  Click on it and type your history search there.  One section will include the Webpages you have visited that meet those search keywords.  If you hover your pointer over a Webpage result you will get a screenshot of the page.  What I am not sure of however is whether it is a cached copy (like Coverflow) or whether it is a live view of the webpage.  If this a live view then someone please send a feature request to Apple to give us the option of Coverflow (even if it comes with a disclaimer that it will slow down Safari).

  • Cover-Flow- and Artist Search-Issue (with Compilations) not in manual

    Hello,
I'm planning to buy an iPod classic 80GB, but there seems to be one issue I cannot live with: Albums marked as compilations are not recognized on the iPod classic. This results in the fact that all single songs on a album are represented as an own album in cover flow. In the artist-view every artist represented on one of the compilations is in the list. For people owning a lot of compilations with different artists (eg. "one hit wonders" or unknown bands) the artist search will be practically unusable.
So now I wait for an update fixing this issue. And this is what I would like to ask you: Is there any hope that this issue will be fixed in short time? Because in the classic functional-manual (other than in the 5G iPod manuals) the feature is not mentioned. So I assume Apple left out this feature intentionally
Thank you and best regards, Jens

And this is what I would like to ask you: Is there any hope that this issue will be fixed in short time?
Since non of us work for Apple we would have no idea.
But, the more people that let Apple know about this, the more chance we have of that feature being restored.

  • The "Cover Flow" / "Album Artist" duplicate albums problem on the iPod

    Hi Guys,
I've made some research about this issue and got to some interesting conclusions.
    DISCLAIMER:
    1. I searched the web and found people describing this problem since 2006 till 2009 and the solution always revolved around not using the "Artist" and the "Album Artist" tags like they should be used.
    2. I did a lot of testing, including re-writing the ID3 tags in different versions and formats to rule out any issues around the tags themselves.
    3. If the stuff I'm going to describe is already well known than sorry about that, I just couldn't find it anywhere.
    PROBLEM:
An album that has a single Album Artist and different Artists appears several times in the iPod Cover Flow although it looks just fine in iTunes.
Tagging the tracks as "Part of a Compilation" only partially solves the issue since the album will appear in the iPod Cover Flow as a Compilation showing up in the end and not together with the "Album Artist" like in iTunes and like it should.
It seems to be a simple issue around the way the iPod uses the "Album Artist" tag but it also seems to be around forever and it's strange Apple hasn't looked into it.
    RESEARCH:
Since I just bought a new iPod Classic, I was again looking into this issue and now I was getting annoyed, strangely the behaviour wasn't the same for all the albums that were suffering from the problem. I found that when the Artist was a combination of, for example:
    Album - AlbumX
    Album Artist - ArtistX
    Track 1 - ArtistX
    Track 2 - ArtistX Feat. X
    Track 3 - ArtistX
    Track 4 - ArtistX Feat. Z
Track 10 - ArtistX Feat. XYZ
In the iPod Cover Flow I got ONLY TWO different albums, one with "ArtistX" and another one with "ArtistX Feat. X".
Well, this was very different from the normal behaviour when the artists are all completely different, in which case you get X amount of albums according to the X amount of different artist names you have.
    CONCLUSION:
It seems to have something to do with the dot ".", I reached the conclusion that for Artist interpretation in the iPod when the Artist tag has a dot "." then it stops interpreting. That means that if you had a "." after the main artist name than it will show only once, like in the above example:
    Album - AlbumX
    Album Artist - ArtistX
Track 1 - ArtistX. <---- NOTICE THE DOT
    Track 2 - ArtistX. Feat. X
    Track 3 - ArtistX.
    Track 4 - ArtistX. Feat. Z
Track 10 - ArtistX. Feat. XYZ
Then in the iPod Cover Flow it will show up only once as AlbumX - ArtistX.
I prefer to use the dots instead of just removing all the "Featurings and similar" since I can still see it normally if I play the track.
So, in the end, a combination like this in your "Artist" tag: "Album Artist"."Artist" would solve the problem in the iPod.
I would love for Apple to solve this issue and I hope this helps.
Has someone else noticed this or am I going crazy?
    Thanks!

sometimes the official title of a release does include the Feat. Guest info.
Yes, but only in some (or many) cases. There seems to be no consistency here, as if Apple were paying no attention about where to put "feat. guest". And I guess most of the data in CDDB (Gracenote) still have "feat. guest" in Artist (correctly, in my opinion).
I quite agree that your workaround is the best workaround. I'm just too self-willed (obstinate?, I don't know the correct English) and don't want to pollute my Library with "wrong" data. Most of the problems would simply be solved if, just if Apple make iPods sort/group artists as iTunes do. Sorry but this is how I feel. I guess you can't help people like me. Thank you for your patience.
Anyway, we need a clear document from Apple describing what are the intended uses of various tags, and iTunes/iPods should obey this document. It seems for me that each Apple engineer is doing just what (s)he wants to do, without any guidelines.
