Search not finding word I see is there. Why?

I am searching for a word that I know (and found manually) is in a PDF file . Why can't Acrobat see it? The document is not created as a scanned image,  and when I choose file save as a rich text format file, Microsoft Word finds the word I seek. What could cause this?

Check Finder preferences, Advanced, to see that searches are for yoour "Mac" as opposed to "current folder" or "previous search scope".
You need to spell what you are looking for exactly.
Make sure the desired drives are not in the Privacy settings for Spotlight system preferences.
Also try using the Finder's Find (command-F).  It also uses spotlight but allows more specific kinds of searches (e.g., search for just a filename as opposed to the normal spotlight search which seaches filenames and file contents).
You might find using a utility like Find any File more convenient and easier to use to qualify searches.

There is no BIOS in OS X. There is only the EFI stored in ROM that is not user modifiable. OS X is probably checking Bay 0 for the boot drive since that is where it should be. It won't check the Tempo drive since it is treated like an external drive. I suggest you open Startup Disk preferences to see if the Tempo device is selected as the boot device. If it isn't, then select it. That will probably shave off a few seconds in the startup time.

  • Verity search not finding all matches

I am indexing a query of 1000 records. I have verified that
the word "training" appears in 7 records:
    Record ID
    52
    135
    246
    535
    642
    849
    926
When I search for "training" only records 52, 135, and 246
    are returned.
Here is the kicker: Whe I sort the query in descending order
and then search for "training" records 962 and 849 are returned.
Records 535 and 642 are not returned in either case.
I have repaired and optimized the index in each case to make
sure but it appears that either indexing stops after a few records
or verity only returns a top few.
    How does verity work?

    My New Code:
    <cfindex action="PURGE" collection="#dbprefix#data_index"
    status="">
    <cfindex action="UPDATE" collection="#dbprefix#data_index"
    key="SP_SESSION"
    type="CUSTOM"
    title="SP_SESSION_TITLE"
    query="data"
    body="SP_SESSION,SP_TRACK,SP_SESSION_TITLE,SP_SESSION_DESCRIPTION,FULL_NAME,TITLE,COMPANY ,SP_P_P_TITLE">
    Still no luck.
    Want to see for yourself?
    Index the site here:
    http://www.aspanet.org/2007conference/indexpages.cfm
Note: I am running two indexes on this page, they are wholly
independent of each other. the one with the problem is "data"
Also note that the numbers and data I provided at the
beginning where examples to simplify my question.
Also, use the browser search on the index page to look for
NC07PROG/NC07_CM31 you will find it near the top. Now search for
NC07PROG/NC07_SS05 you will find it near the bottom.
Now go to the actual search here:
    http://www.aspanet.org/2007conference/page.cfm?name=_Search
Search for NC07PROG/NC07_CM31 you will find it
Now search for NC07PROG/NC07_SS05 you will not find it
Now search for the word "training". One of the results will
be record NC07PROG/NC07_CM31 but not NC07PROG/NC07_SS05

  • Bookmark search not finding PRINTLIMINATOR bookmarklet

Firefox 6.0.1 no longer find PRINTLIMINATOR (a javascript "bookmarklet") when I search bookmarks.
It used to work with older versions and still works with Firefox 9.
I have now tried this on 3 computers and same problem on each.
If I go to the folder I can see the '''Printliminator '''bookmark and I can click on it and open the bookmarklet, but typing '''printl '''into the search box does not return a match?

    Hi cor-el.
Tried that and reloaded Firefox - still not finding the bookmarklet.
I entered a new BOOKMARK called Printliminator and it finds that no problem, but the javascript bookmarklet, with the same name, still does not appear when I enter '''printl '''in the Bookmarks search box - as it did with the previous version of Firefox (and does with version 9).
    '''Name '''Printliminator
    '''Location '''javascript:(function(){function%20loadScript(a,b){var%20c=document.createElement('script')........{printlimator()})})})()
'''Is not found by typing PRINTL in the bookmarks search box.'''
I even added printliminator in the description and keyword fields.
    '''Name '''The Printliminator
    '''Location '''http://css-tricks.com/examples/ThePrintliminator/
'''Is found by typing PRINTL in the bookmarks search box.'''
The same is true for other javascript bookmarklets in my Bookmarks.
    Thanks for trying to help.

  • Search not finding artists in various artist albums

Using "Search Library" in iTunes 11.0.1, if an artist is in an album of various artists, search will not find this artist even if the artist tag is filled out in the Get Info box.
Same thing if you select the Artist tab at the top of the screen, artists that are in various artists albums will not show up in the list. This can't be right, right?

Switch to the one without artwork - List - and make sure that the Grouping is visible. Now switch back to *Album List* view. I think you will find that search matches with items in the grouping field now.
It seems that the problem goes back to introduction of the separate "List" & "Album List" views around iTunes 10.0.1 - see this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2614427&start=0&tstart=0
Essentially text in certain columns is meant to be excluded from search when those fields are hidden however in this case iTunes is reading visibility from one view while another view displays the column in question, on screen, in front of your eyes. It is very counter-intuitive.
Note that after switching views and enabling/disabling columns you also need to edit any existing search term you have entered in order for the results to be updated.

  • Calendar search not finding calendar events older than a year.

Calendar search cannot find events older than a year.
    neither does spotlight search.
    iphone 4s 16GB ios version 7.1.2
ipad 32GB with retina (purchased on 2012) ios version 7.1.2
Does anybody has the same issue?
Calendar events over one year old are not found when searched on iOS. Neither on the iPhone nor the iPad. Although they are found on a mac running mavericks calendar app.
All events are displayed when going directly to the month and viewing all the events of each day, but she search feature, the one accessed through the little magnifier, simply cannot find any event older than a year.
I have multiple events in my calendar and I tested them and the last I can find is within 365 days of today. after that events cannot be found.
    steps to reproduce:
    1. go into the calendar app on the iPhone and add an event but use a date date 13 months older than the current date. Save the event.
    2. verify the even is created by looking at the day of the event
    3. on the top right corner of the calendar app select the magnifying glass and try to search the event by typing any word you used on the title of the event just created
    4. search result will display No Results
    5. exit the calendar and access spotlight search on the home screen by using the "pull down" gesture from an area outside of the dock, including the top row of app icons. Type any word you used on the title of the event just created
    6. search result will not display the event
    Thanks

    this has already been answered.
    please ignore my question.

  • Outllok 2013 search not finding phrase in attachment

I am running Outlook 2013 Pro and cannot find a specific phrase in an attachment. I have recently had my laptop replaced by corp. same make and model. On my old laptop I could search and find the attachment I was looking for. now I can not. I have re-indexed
my windows search and outlook index. still no luck. please help.

    Hi,
Generally, we can follow these steps to search the attachments with keywords:
    1. Open Outlook. Click on the Search box and select search Current Mailbox.
    2. The Ribbon will automatically display the Search tab.
    3. Click More and then Attachment Contains.
    4. Type your search term in the space.
Please check the search steps above both in Outlook cached mode and Online mode. And refer to Ed Crowley’s suggestion for further troubleshooting.

  • Mail search not finding existing items

The simple Mail Search tool finds many things in the mailboxes, but misses more and more. When a search is being done within a given mailbox or folder, the search expands (sometimes unreliably) to go through all mailboxes/folders, when this was not desired.
Is the indexing not working? How can this be checked?
What are limits of indexing (number of messages, etc.)?
Mail is open for many hours/day, so time should be available.
Entire Mail Folder is now over 1.3 GB, too big to handle?

I had the same problem but rebuilding spotlight's index fixed the problem. I followed the instructions at
    http://www.macobserver.com/tip/2006/07/21.1.shtml
    Or Onyx can be used...

  • HT4059 I downloaded a book on my iPad but I can not find it. I thought there would be an icon on my app pages for the book but there is not. Where do I go to get the book?

I purchased an I book for the first time and now I can not find it. I thought it would bean icon on my apps page. Where did it go"?

How/where did you buy it ? If it's an ibook from Apple then you can only download and read them in the iBooks app on an iPad - if you have the iBooks app on your iPad, and that book doesn't show on the bookshelf in the app, then you should be able to redownload it via the Purchased tab in the ibookstore in the app.

  • Finder can not  find and display certain files. Why? Any fix, please?

I've discovered to my surprise that Finder can not  find and display certain files. Computer is Mac book OS X (10.6.8)
No matter what Finder settings I use, there are files which it can not detect and display.
Here are just some examples of files sitting in the HD but Finder can not display them:
    Located in  preference panes :
    fibre channel 1.7
    Located in :    /Library/StartupItems/BRESINKx86Monitoring
    BRESINKx86Monitoring
    FxLicenseManager
    Located in    /Library/StartupItems/FxLicenseManager
    EAP8021X
    Located in    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/EAP8021X.framework
    The questions:
What to make of this inability of Finder to ,well, find? (again - I tried all possible settings of Finder!)
Is there any way to fix it?
    Thanks for any competent suggestion!

    Well, guys,
Interesting suggestions but the problem remains -Finder (aka Spotlight) is not capable to find certain files.Period.
I consider it as a fault of the system because in comparison, a search facility of a plain Windows based machine is capable to dig out and display any file, no matter now deeply hidden...
As far as the suggestion above by softwater  goes , well, I've used the additional foptions  extensively and nothing produced the result needed -that's why I created this discussion.
If someone still believes that using Finder with all its options is good enough, here is a test for you to perform on your own Mac:
-Open  /Library/StartupItems/ and have a look inside - most likely you have a bunch of items. Write down the names of one or two of them. For this test I've chosen
FxLicenseManager  located in    /Library/StartupItems/. You can use any file you want grom this location...
    - Then go to  Finder and set it to display everything in Library of the HD. Remember - for this test you pretend you don't know any file name in this folders.
If the Finder works properly it shall display  folders  of Library >Startup items with all stuff inside, including the FxLicenseManager file I used for this test.
Finder displayed nothing. It is obvious that for Finder, certain locations are off limits. That's why I consider Finder as a faulty.
Of course if someone can set the Finder's  options to do the above search and succeed, I'll be glad to try ...:-)
At this point, what I gather from this discussion is that :
    1. Finder (Spotlight) feature is not to be trusted, despite number of fancy but rather useless options.
    2. If you need to really find everything usually not displayed by Finder you better get real  searching software.

  • Search function not finding words.

We have Adobe Reader 9.2 and I'm having a problem with a specific user when trying to search for words in a pdf. The document was scanned in to our Doc Managment System, other users including myself can search for words no problem, but this user can't. The Adobe version is the same as mine and others, any ideas?

Yep, the user can highlight, and then copy and paste the text to another program.

  • Searches not finding files... any suggestions?

    Hello,
I am using a Mac Pro desktop with two external firewire drives. I was doing a search for files I know exist on one of the external drives and the search pulled up nothing. I went to my drive and found the files alive and well but the search in the finder won't find them. I tested out a bunch more files and folders on that drive and 95% of the files the search wouldn't find. It found a couple of files on that drive but that's it. Again, when I go to the finder the files are there. This is causing me a lot of problems because since the finder can't find the files my applications can't either. Does anyone have any suggestions? Do I need to rebuild the drive index or something? Should I use disk warrior? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Why doesn't Spotlight find files or folders? Why is there no simple file finder utility for Snow Leopard? Seems like I can find certain files (usually files which I already know where there are), but not the folders or files I'm actually looking for. In this case I'm looking for a Cisco profile file that ends with .pcf, but I have had the problem many times before. Am I missing something, or is the capability simply not there? Is there some kind of built-in feature that lets you find only the files that naive users can see?
Also, I'm uncertain about the difference between searching for a string that is part of a file or folder name, and a string that is within contents of the file. I would like to be able to choose which I'm searching for.

  • Why is spotlight not finding items I know are there?

I am using spotlight to find items on my Mac, on most searches it comes up empty even when I know the subject I am looking for is there.

Check Finder preferences, Advanced, to see that searches are for yoour "Mac" as opposed to "current folder" or "previous search scope".
You need to spell what you are looking for exactly.
Make sure the desired drives are not in the Privacy settings for Spotlight system preferences.

  • Search not finding certain matches

We have some document control documents that are not showing up when searched for based on certain keywords but are for others....
The document title (as well as name) contain "Program Code1 Code2 Desc".  So for example it might say "11123# ABC U1234 red thing".
The person doing the searching usually wants to get all of the files that relate to the codes.  So they would search for "ABC U1234".  The library has 6 documents that should match, but returns only 2 (Advanced search returns the same
2 results).  However, if for example you search for "ABC U1234 red", the document that didn't show up in the first search now shows up.  So I know the crawler has at least got the documents based on that (the document also have not been
changed in several months, so it isn't like the title just changed and the crawler just hasn't hit it yet).
    These are Excel documents

    Hi spi_shane,
I understand the library has more than 2 documents "titile" and "name" column containing string "11123# ABC U1234 red thing", but search only return 2 of them when search "ABC U1234", but the others
will return whe search "ABC U1234 red", these documents have been crawled and documents change nothing in several months.
For toubleshooting the issue, we can try the following.
    1. Please make a copy of that Excel file with name "11123# ABC U1234 red thing - copy" , and create another new Excel file with name "11123# ABC U1234 red thing - new" from local machine Excel application, then
upload to the library and start an incremental crawl, see if the they could be searched out, then see if the orginal files have something corrupt.
    2. Go to Central Administration site ->Search service applicaiton, crawl log page, find the crawled docuemnt item and selete "Recrawl this item in the next crawl", then start an incremental crawl and test again.
    Thanks
