Search on Older 30g 5th gen

How can I quickly jump from one letter to another when searching for albums/artists? For example, I want an album that starts with S. I ussually get there by scrolling really fast, sometimes a gray sqare display appears with the actal 1st letter, sort of like a jump function but I don't know how I got it to appear...it just happens accidentaly. Anybody know how to use this function?
Thanks!

It has to do with the number of songs you have and how fast you are scrolling through them. Although I have 13K songs, I haven't been able to make it happen consistently.

I have an older iPod (5th gen, 30GB+video) that I had connected to my computer with iTunes.  That computer crashed and the only place my music is stored is on my iPod.  How do I move that music to the iTunes program (version 8) on my new computer.  When I connect my iPod to my new computer the music shows up in my iPod's music directory but I can't move it to the library.

  • Replacement Question: Ipod 20G 4th Gen Vs. Ipod 30G 5th Gen

The 20G non-color display Ipod that I owned for 18 months died mysteriously last Sunday. I lifted it out of the charge dock after it fully charged and the click wheel had become completely unresponsive. The video display was fully functional.... but otherwise it wouldn't go. I tried resetting about 5 times in all and did full restore and nothing changed. It's pretty much dead for no reason. (And no, I didn't buy the Apple Care plan because I hadn't expected it to crap out on me after just 18 months.
I considered having it repaired by Apple only to find out that Apple won't repair it. Or the guy on the phone says that they don't repair anything that doesn't have a care plan. (Sidebar: This guy was the rudest support agent I've ever, ever spoken to Apple. He actually said 'well, I don't know what to say to someone who didn't bother to read the fine print.' I hung up on him right about then.)
So, now I'm faced with replacing it. None of the other non-Apple brands appeal to me and I've discovered that really, as sad it is- I can't live without my Ipod. But I'm not sure whether to buy a 20g refurb or just bite the bullet and spend the additional 80 bucks for the 5th gen 30g.
Reasons Why I Should Get A Refurb:
*I have all the 20g accessories (charge dock, armband) and can't afford and don't want to replace all that stuff with 30g stuff.
    * I have absolutely no interest in the ability to watch videos on Ipod on a 2" screen. I suppose this is blasphemy but I'm a simple girl when it comes to her tech. It needs to play my music and occassionally store a .doc file- it doesn't need to be tricked out.
    * It's 80 bucks cheaper than the new 30g.
    * I'm still in love with my 20g even though it clearly doesn't love me.
    Reasons To Get a 30G:
    * Apple is/has phasing out the 4th gen and all of its accessories. I will be relegated to sale bins and combing Ebay for "vintage" 4th gen stuff very soon.
    * Apple Care Plan: Okay, I've seen the light- but can I even get a plan with a refurb?
    * The refurb could crap out on me within mere minutes of it finding its way to me.... Unlikely but considering how fast mine died, I'm gunshy.
    * Smaller Ipod- the 4th gens aren't that large but I'm told the 5th gens are less clunky.
In truth, I'm not sure what to do and I'd appreciate input and feedback from others on your experience with any of the issues in the above post.

If yo want the features of iOS 8 brings, including app updates youpneed a 5G.
However, the design of the 5G is over two years old.  It will in the near future max out on which iOS it can run

  • Search function in iPod 5th gen 60GB

After upgrading to iPod software/firmware 1.2 I noticed that there were a few new things like brightness control and letters showing on screen when doing a fast scroll through lists, but I could not find the advertised search option that would be a great deal more useful than brightness control. Is it possible that it is only available on the new-30/80G iPods or I am not skilful enough to find it on my video iPod 60G?
    Would love to find out...:-)

    @Sirius Mac
I completely disagree. I know the brightness control is great and everything, but dangling the search feature in our face is not cool. And you saying that we should get down on our knees and kiss Mr. Job's feet for allowing us to bask in the glow of any updates he deems us worthy to receive, is tantamount to you saying that being in a prison cell with a window is sooo much better than being in thrown down a well and forgotten about. Sure it's better, but it's still not good.
This is an obvious ploy by Apple to try to get us to buy new iPods which have only 1 new feature, but have a larger hard drive. It's a very very weak ploy granted, but it's obvious that's what it is. Frankly, this one is so weak that I don't believe anyone will upgrade for it, and it will only serve to upset some once happy iPod users, like myself. I'm not "unhappy" now, I'm just irked that they'd think so little of us that they feel that we either don't pay attention to their new releases, or that we'd be fooled by so weak a ploy.
I personally am withholding final judgement until another point release for the 20Gb/60Gb 5th gen comes out. If it doesn't enable search, then I'll be mad. For now, I'm fine giving them the benefit of the doubt that someone forgot to flip that switch in the 1.2 release.

  • IPod 30G 5th gen as file and photo backup?

Is it possible to use my new 30G iPod for basic file backup for word and photo files? Make it work like a basic external HD and still enjoy all the iPod music features, etc?
    G5 dual 2   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Of course if your main hard drive crashes you can also lose everything. Never trust strictly a hard drive back up solution. Every so often I back up everything that is real important to a dvd-RW disc set.
Using the iPod is great because you can use it as a drive to move files around with and as a secondary back up.

  • Older 5th Gen IPOD Classic Games not syncing - HELP

I previously had a IPod Classic 30GB and purchased 2 games (Ms PacMan & Mahjong) these worked well on that IPod. I now have a new IPOD Classic 120GB and I have purchased 2 more games (UNO and Scrabble).
All games display in Itunes game although they are displayed on two different lines, but only the two new games (UNO and Scrabble) appear in the Games Sync area.
How do I get the original two games (Ms PacMan & Mahjong) to sync to these new IPod Classic?

Are those older games still available in the iTunes Store +iPod Click-Wheel Games+ section? If they are currently being sold, that current version is certain to be compatible with all game-playing click-wheel iPods.
If so, you may want to try sending an email to the iTunes Store support team. If you go here
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/store/
and follow one of the links under +Customer Service+, such as +Transfer Purchases+, and you will see a link that says +Contact Us+. Follow that link to a form you can fill out to send the email message. Explain the situation and ask if there is a way to get the newest version of those games you already paid for previously, when you had a 5th gen iPod.

  • Early 5th Gen iPod, No "Search" Option?

My sister just got a Late 5th Gen iPod, it's completely new, i suppose that the store didn't get the new 6th Gen stock just yet, well, i was teaching her how to use it and then i saw an interesting function, "Search", i found out what it does and thats exactly what i need
Now, back on the PC i connected her iPod, it updated the firmware to 1.2.2, and i did it on my Early 5th Gen iPod too, but i noticed i didn't had that function, but in her iPod it was still there
Does anyone know why this is happening, or how to make Search pop up in my iPod?

It was not in the early 5Gs. You would have to get a newer one to have it.

  • 5th gen iPod Classic not recognized

Hi, I have a 5th gen iPod classic 30GB that my friend gave to me a few months ago. It was recognized on my computer and itunes at the start and I was able to sync and perform all the needed tasks. I recently had to reformat my computer and now the ipod isn't recognized by USB, or in itunes. The Device manager for Windows XP SP3 says "Unknown Device" and that the drivers for the device are missing. I've tried installing older itunes verions, searching for drivers myself, used 3 different Apple USB cables, restarting the ipod with the center + menu buttons, and checked the format (windows). I also have a 2nd gen ipod nano which is recognized with no trouble. All the tests on the classic, with the exception of firewire, passed and the hard drive works fine. The classic also isn't recognized on 2 other Windows 7 computers. If I try to put the ipod in disk mode, it just says "ok to disconnect" without giving me any other options. Also, the ipod charges on both wall USB and the computers USB. I have also tried all 6 USB ports. I've searched the web for days and have tried everything I could find to fix this, to no avail though. If anyone knows anything and can help, please post whatever you think will work. Thank you!

When you plug in the iPod does it even appear in Device Manager?  See this article for more details.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1496
Otherwise, I have a feeling that the USB ports on the Netbook don't output enough power to allow the iPod to fully communiate properly with the Windows Vista O/S.

  • IPod 5th Gen Functionality

I'm sure this has been asked before and if it has if someone could point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it.
Question: Is there a software upgrade (for the iPod 5th Gen) out there that will essentially update the device to work or operate like a newer iPod ? For instance, the funtion of the new iPod Nano 3rd Gen which has "Cover Flow" ... is there a way to get the "older" 5th Gen iPod to have this function ?

*is there a way to contact Apple and submit something like an Enhancement Request ?*
You can send feedback/feature requests directly to Apple at this link: Apple Product Feedback
However I think it is safe to say that going on past model changes you'll not see anything from Apple on this. As an example, when the Late 2006 version of the 5th Generation iPod was introduced it had a new search feature, this was not added retrospectively to the earlier model. The new changes are much more extensive than that one was so I wouldn't expect to see Cover Flow or any aspects of the new interface added through an Apple firmware update to earlier models.

  • 5th Gen won't charge on Bose SoundDock

I plugged my brand new 5th gen Nano intou my Bose SoundDock. The Ipod screen said "Charging is not supported with this accessory". WTH!!! It will play the i-pod, but my $300 SoundDock can't charge it?
My 4th gen worked fine and had no issues. Anyone else heard of this? Looks like I might be packing it back up and sending it back.

Apple removed the Firewire compatibility - 12V charging support. The new ipods - 5th generation nano, ipod Touch, etc. no longer will charge in older accessories. So far, I have located two adapters which should allow the newer ipods to charge in the older devices - like the Bose Sounddock.
Scosche PassPORT USB Home Charging Adapter ($25.47), Griffin Charge Converter Adapter for All iPods and iPhones ($18.32). I don't think the Griffin device will fit in the Bose Sounddock - it's more for the car accessories. These are both available through Amazon.com. (There appear to be some other options as well.)
Gotta say though - Apple support was awful! I went into the Apple store to ask about this "problem" since I got a nano 5g for Christmas. Do you think they even gave me the explanation of why it wouldn't work? No, their answer was that they didn't make the devices I was talking about (Bose Sounddock, car connection, iHome clock radio) and I would have to contact the manufacturer of each one! I had to search the internet to find out why the nano wouldn't work with the accesories. And why can't Apple make an adapter? They changed the technology. Bottom line - biggest market share, $ matter, not customer support.

  • Kenwood X991 & iP200 cable with iPod 5th Gen 80GB does NOT work correctly

I have a conundrum. My wife has the 4th Gen v1.2.1 iPod 30GB which works fine on my Kenwood X991 Head Unit. I recently purchased the "new" 80GB iPod 5th Gen with the latest version "1.0.2" which does NOT work properly. The iTunes software tells me that this 1.0.2 is the latest software.
When I attach my iPod to my stereo, it states "Reading" for eternity. It DOES play music but only plays Alphabetical Order ONLY. There is no ability to stop, change, fast-forward, reverse, etc....the only thing you can do is click "Source" to change to CD Player or Tuner, etc...
Does anybody out there know what is going on? I have a request into Kenwood as well. Thanks in advance for all your help!
    -Kingofbytes

Thanks for the help. It's an iPod Classic then 80GB. The unit plays when plugged in but does not allow searching, or switching songs nor displays as it is supposed to. My wife's 30GB works with no problems. Of note:
    Her 30GB = v1.2.1
    My 80GB = 1.0.2
Mine is newer by about 6 months. Both are the latest software according to the screen.
Kenwood has said to "reset the head unit" and "make sure I've got it plugged in properly". I need to try the reset part next but the last statement is funny to me. I can install a head unit, amplifier, re-run all speaker wire, install a Dual 10" subwoofer box, solder and wire tie all connections from a factory unit to a 3rd party Cable manager kit, but I need to "make sure" I know how to plug in an iPod cable.....laughable.

  • I have numerous different apple products with the new lightening connector, all of which have broken or stopped working after just short periods of time, I have an iPhone 5C, and iPad mini and and iPod Touch 5th gen?

Hi, I have numerous different Apple products, an iphone 5c, iPad mini and iPod touch 5th gen.
I have had them all for only relatively short periods of time yet the lightning cable has stopped working on all of them?
On the touch, charging has stopped completely?
Is this a manufacturing issue with the new charging system?

Hi, yes I'm using the original apple cables.
This definitely isn't user error nor confined just to me, the devices are used by different people in the home.
On a quick sample around the office (survey of 7 people let me add) 4 of them said the cables had broken on them and had to be replaced.
Having also searched through the forums it appears this is a fairly widespread issue.
    It's defo not user error!
