Search Options in Finder Windows

Hi
Is there an option to refine the Search function in Finder Windows? Just now, this option searches beginning with file names. Meaning: if I want to find a file named "1999 - dataland" I get NO results when I search for "dataland".
I think this is way below the possibilities of that option, especially when utilities like "Find Any File" finds the correct files.
Thanks
PK

If you are searching just for file names, try cmd-ctrl-F which just searches file names. While it still says filename "matches," it seems to be using "contains."
I don't know if there is a way to set the defaults to "contains."

Go to Microsoft website to fix install and Unistall problems. Click "Run now" from Fix it to remove all iTunes & related installer files:
    http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall
Be aware that Windows Installer CleanUp Utility will not remove the actual program from your computer. However, it will remove the installation files so that you can start the installation, upgrade, or uninstall over.

  • Why is there no "SEARCH OPTION" in the Windows Store? Apps missing be nice if I could find them !

Since on this journey from Win 8 consumer preview to Win 8 retail preview   ..And no currently trying out Win 8 Pro...It verified if it was gonna give me back ( allowed to re-download ) the apps I was used/had in previous editions. The Store gives you
a selection of YOU APPS from previous versions of the OS preview of apps you installed and currently would want to reinstall. Various versions of the Consumer preview I installed 2 out the 4 times i installed the OS seen I had installed the app Comixology.
When the first time I installed Retail preview it didn't have it in my list nor was it listed in the store!  Same goes with Iheart Radio and Slacker Radio though numerous installments of the OS. Now trying out the Win 8 Pro 9200 version It showed I at
one point no matter what PC I used ( I own a few and bought a new one recently ) It showed at one point I installed Comixology. Yet it didn't show Iheart Radio or Slacker in my install list of old to reinstall nor was it even in the Store!!!!   \\\So
what the hell gives ?????   I mean If there was a SEARCH Option it would make it easier to track these Metro ( whatever they are calling it now -personally I think they should call it FRAMES as in Window Frames  :P  When you go on these
programs sites they only offer up Apple or Android app downloads and nothing mentioning of Metro or Win 8 -which is understandable due to not being released yet but still if the Store can't comply with your history of app install base ( paid or free ) and
you can't have the ability to retrieves said apps you once installed how can that be trusted if and when paid apps are bought if you are only to reinstall the entire OS and find that your app is not obtainable via offered through the main store or even in
your downloads app install history. I hope they fix this issue as it's been pissing me off since this whole testing thing!!

Sorry if I offended you by using an anecdote - the actions of kids are simply an easy way to explore the actions of adults.  Growing up doesn't change base instincts.  Most people (myself included) tend to have an immediate distrust of change when
it is not change that they are instigating, when it is forced upon them.  What better example is there than a child, where many big decisions are made for them?
As for the new interface, I didn't catch on until it was revealed to me (or I hit my head against the wall, can't remember), so I'm not saying it is easy.  Better education is needed, but going back to the old way doesn't help.  The five or six
questions I have answered today are questions that I myself had, and wished someone had answered for me.  This is a
drastic change from old versions of Windows.  I even told my boss yesterday that I can't see his company (I'm a contractor) switching any time soon - too much new stuff to learn.  That being said, once there are some good training tools available,
I do believe that this OS will be a good choice - it does feel more intuitive after only a few days of use.  A training course is likely necessary for new users, however my guess is that this will wind up being a beneficial change (long-run)
for IT departments, because the system does feel more aimed towards the casual user.  No matter what program you use, the search and settings are in one easy place.
I admittedly do not have a lot of files in my Skydrive, however the file that is there is purple, while the folders are blue.  Not sure if all files are like that, and I really do not have the time to explore those differences.  That being said,
the number in the bottom-right seems pretty self-explanatory, the number of child elements in the container.  I barely remember the old Skydrive interface, however I do remember it felt clunky.  Whether or not the changes are a true
improvement, it does feel more streamlined.
Metro (or whatever it is called now) is confusing.  It is scary.  (My word, not yours, nor am I trying to imply it.)  It is definitely
different from the past.  But it makes sense.  Same interface on every MS product: Xbox, Windows, and Phone.  Microsoft didn't exactly
pioneer this idea, either.  Apple has been creeping in that direction for a while now.  As I said previously, I can move around faster in the new Start menu than I could in the old, and I can actually do
more without ever putting a hand on the mouse - for anyone that is waist-deep in computers, regardless of their specific job, that tends to be a
    good thing.
There are a lot of growing pains here, for both Microsoft and the consumer.  Has MS gotten it right?  Not yet, not entirely, but the goal is clear.
If your complaint is on broken
functionality, then I wouldn't disagree with you.  There is plenty of that, and I think it was a bit foolish of Microsoft not to have a Connect site up for such things.  (If I'm wrong on that, and there is one, please point me that way.  I'm
still stuck with Explorer.exe crashing from click-scrolling.)
As for disliking the big changes, well, I can't agree with you on that at all.  Again, it wasn't an easy transition, but now that I'm here, I don't want to go back.  I want the true
bugs fixed, but not having a search bar seems more like being stuck on old ways of doing things than a real problem.  That kind of thing can even lead to puking.

  • Search field in finder window fails to find

I'm in the process of preparing some thumbnail images for a webpage. I have each file named by our item number at 300 pixels wide. There is a thumbnail image of each at 50% size and 25% size. The 50% image is named with a "_150" after each file name and a "_75" after the 25% thumbnail image before the ,JPG file extension.
All images are contained in one folder. I now want to put each size in it's own folder (all the full sized images in one folder, all the 50% sized images in another and all the 25% sized images in the last folder. Normally (under Panther) I'd do a search in the Search field in the finder window to find all files with _150 in their name in the selected folder, select the results and move them to their own folder. It seems Spotlight with all it's vaunted search power cannot find any files with _150 in the folder I've indicated even though I can plainly see them. It finds no results at all. This is progress???? Give me back a simple Find command!!!!

Hmmm, how odd. I have renamed a file on my Desktop to append _150 to the end of the filename. Spotlight did find it via a Finder search.
You can try forcing Spotlight to re-index the folder by opening the Spotlight preference pane, select the Privacy tab, then drag the folder into the list. Wait one minute then delete the folder from the list. This will force Spotlight to try and re-index the folder.
If that doesn't work it's possible the Spotlight database index is messed up. If that's the case then you would need to delete the database and re-index.
I would also do a precautionary repair of the hard drive and permissions:
Boot from your OS X Installer. Be sure to use the installer for the version of OS X you have installed. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (or Utilities menu if using Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.0.4 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Searching in the Finder Window - can default location to search be changed?

I think this behavior isn't unique to Leopard, but it's always confused me a bit.
If I'm in a finder window -- say, for instance in my Applications Folder, and I enter a term in the search box -- such a "Firefox".
The top bar of the search results defaults to "This Mac". In general, I'd rather have it default to the folder that I'm in (in my example, "Applications").
Is there way to change this behavior?
    Thanks. -

I did a search on the forums and haven't found an answer for this yet. This issue is EXTREMELY annoying. In my art department, we work off of a server that has all of our ads, named with their account numbers for quick finding. When searching for a particular ad in Tiger, it remembered to search the selected file on the server. Now in Leopard, it defaults every time to "This Mac" and by "Contents". I'd rather have it remember what location type I last searched, and "File Name" be default, since it'll likely be faster than searching file contents.
One workaround is to do a search in the desired folder with a single word, save the search in the Finder sidebar. Whenever you want to search it again, just click the saved search, double-click the search word and type your search. Problem is, if you have many different folders, your sidebar would be huge.
We need an Apple update to fix this, unless somebody can figure out how to change it.

  • Ethernet connection and 'shared' option in finder window!!!

I am relatively new to mac and everyday I see something that I don't understand, like the other day I connected to internet using ethernet cable and 'shared' option appeared in finder window with all kinds of people and devices listed. It never happened when I connected through wireless. What does it mean? Are other people able to see my computer and the content on it? Any explanation would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi
It's either a PC or some other Hewlett Packard device connected to your network or on another network (probably wirelessly) you're connected to. It's in the Shared section of the Sidebar because it's either broadcasting itself using Bonjour or more likely NetBios. You can choose to not see this option by disabling it in the Finder Preferences.
It's also possible it's your router/gateway/wireless access point.
If you've not enabled personal file sharing and you're not in the habit of handing your account password out to all and sundry, there's nothing to worry about.

  • How do i view 'Today, Yesterday' search options in finder sidebar?

Today i just got a new iMac, previously using a 2009 macbook. A feature in the finder sidebar that i use everyday is no longer there, nor can i find a setting to show/unhide it. The 'Today' 'search for'  sorting option. i use it all the time when sorting through thousands of photos and files i'm not about to rename. When sorting through my photos, i open the ones i wish to later use, then close them. When going to import those chosen files later into a program or upload them online, i can then select them all in a cluster, using the Today tab on the left sidebar.
This feature is very important to me, and not having it is creating a huge amount of time trying to search and upload files one at a time...
How do i get the date sorting options back in the sidebar?

  • Finder Window Search Locations Forgotten

When performing a search in a Finder window, the user is forced to choose "where" to search (entire system or current folder). Tiger would "remember" your selection (preferred). Leopard forces the user to make the selection over and over.
I prefer to always have the current folder be my search location. I can find no way to have this be the default in Leopard. Is this doable?

  • Automate finder window properties in subfolders with AppleScript?

Automator can set window view all the way down to the subfolders. But I have to use AppleScript to set the window's position and columns' widths one at a time.
This is the AppleScript I use:
    tell application "Finder"
    activate
    set bounds of Finder window 1 to {top, left, window width, window height}
    select Finder window 1
set width of column id name column of list view options of Finder window 1 to 450
set width of column id modification date column of list view options of Finder window 1 to 150
set width of column id size column of list view options of Finder window 1 to 100
    end tell
Is there a way to combine both Automator's Set Window View and the AppleScript above and apply it to run automatically all the way into the subfolders? I can only do the first part to set window view but I have to do hundreds of subfolders manually for the second part.
Google and search but couldn't find a solution.
    Any help or suggestion? Thanks!

why don't you just change the column widths for all folders in finder? hold option while adjusting the width in one window.

  • DVR Search Option No Longer Works - After The Crap Upgrade

The new software upgrade is crap. DVR search option no longer works. I can't use the search option to find my favorite programs and set the DVR to record them. It only lets me put the first letter in the search field and then nothing. I can't enter any more letters aftet that.
Verizon sent me another DVR but it has same issues. They sent a technician to my house and he basically told me, the upgrade is crap and lots of people are having technical issues.
He gave me another box and said it is working. Now I have three DVRs sitting in my house and I have to return two. After he left I tried to search and I have the same exact issue so basically he just lied and didn't fix anything.
I called tech support over and over, and they just told me that they can't do anything. They basicaly admitted that the upgrade is crap and the are clueless on how to fix it. So I'm stock with 3 DVRs that don't work. Billing department told me they can't give me any discounts either.
Anyone else is having these issues?

Same issue here.  Sent me another box, same model as the old one.  Same exact issues.  Called Tech support back, they admitted it was a known issue, and nothing he could do about it.  Was told I had to talk to someone in SALES to get them to send me a newer box.
New box is here, and now i have no option to record.  Oh, and last time I called tech support... I got 'disconnected' (after being on hold for 30+ minutes).  They are really dropping the ball, and I will not be renewing.

  • Sub folder vanished with emails. Emails still can be found with search option but won't display text

A bunch of my subfolders for sorting my email vanished, which was brought to my attention when TB tried to sort my mail and said that the subfolder did not exist. I re-created the subfolders with the same name as before and when I went into the new subfolder I was surprised to see that all the past email were in it. However, when I opened the e-mails the body of the emails were empty. (I even tried highlighting for white text as suggested on line, but nothing)
I used the "search emails "options to try and find them, using the title of the emails as the search parameter ie "Receipt for your PalPay payments" and the search results provided me with the results of all the missing emails with the full text of each e-mail. However, when I went into individual emails (or the open emails as list option) the text was still not there. It must be there somewhere since the search option is finding it.
I tried deleting the Profile (global-messages-db.sqlite) hoping that it would bring the text back but it didn't work. Most of the emails that are blank are of the financial nature and I would really like them back.
    HELP!!!!!
    Thank You, John Jaeger

in he middle of the search results screen at the top is a show list option. (
hidden in plain sight) click it. in the list. right click the headings and select location. That will not find you mail as such. but it will give the folder the search is finding it in. If that name is what you expect, you have perhaps dragged the folder or folders to another location so they are a sub folder of another unrelated folder.
View Menu (Alt+V) > folders > all to ensure only real physical folders are visible, now you will need to expand each and every folder in the tree to locate your folders.

  • "File, Find, Searching "This Mac" or "New Finder Window" not finding files ?

    I an iMac 7,1, Mac OS X 10.6.8, Build 10K549,
I have noticed on many occasions recently that when I ma using either ...
    File, Find, Searching "This Mac"
    or
    "New Finder Window"
I am NOT finding the files I am looking for ...
I now they are there, so I go through all my folders, and find the files, or folders I am looking for ...
So why could this be happening, why are they not found in the search ?
Is there a fix or addition ?

As baltwo eventually explained, you have to add the search criteria "System files" to your search, with the option "Include" selected, to find many items Spotlight otherwise excludes from search results. Alternately (& quite ridiculously), if your search is restricted to the parent folder containing the item, you don't need to add this.
For example, if you open /Library in the Finder, enter "Desktop Pictures" in the search box, you won't get it in the results with the default "This Mac" location, but if you click "Library" for the location, you will. (Yes, many users think this is bizarre, "what were they thinking?" behavior.)
What Spotlight considers "system files" is only slightly less bizarre, as you will probably discover once you start using it to broaden searches. For instance, Safari history items & Mail.app messages are not found unless you include system files, but many files like C Header Source files (in System/Library/Frameworks) are found without including system files in the search.
When it was introduced in Tiger, Spotlight was supposed to be a next-generation search engine, capable of accurately guessing what you were looking for (& filtering out what you weren't) with near-sentient intelligence. I think almost anyone who used that version will agree it did not achieve that lofty goal. Apple apparently agreed, or at least listened to the complaints enough to realize it needed rethinking. Unfortunately, what its designers came up with for the Leopard rethink feels like an early beta version, full of hastily implemented, quirky features that never got sorted out before it was released.
We can only hope that we won't have to wait for OS 10.6 for a more mature, less quirky version.

  • How do I erase history of file use in "search for" sidebar in finder window

I just upgraded to Leopard and noticed that the "search for" sidebar in the finder window reveals every file I've ever opened in the past. I know I can turn it off in the finder preferences but I prefer being able to erase the history. I can't find an option to erase my file use history in the system or finder preferences. What can I do? I'm a stickler for privacy and don't like to keep this info on my computer no matter how innocuous or inoffensive the files might be. (Please spare me the inevitable jokes about hiding dirty pictures or videos... It's not that.)
