Search settings - default to current folder and "file name" ?

99.9% of the time, when I enter something in the search bar of the Finder window, what I want to do is:
1. search is the folder that I'm in
2. search for the "file name", and
3. then sort the results by "date modified".
Currently, problem is:
1. I can only change the search area (which defalts to "This Mac") after the search has begun.
2. Likewise, the default is "content"
3. There's not even an OPTION for "date modified". The "Last Opened" option is rarely useful.
Please help!
Thanks

The only one who can help us is Apple. Obviously you find this just as ridiculous as everyone else does who actually uses their computer to do things.
While I usually think this kind of sweeping generalization is unjustified, here I do not. Spotlight has great potential, but "ridiculous" describes the implementation perfectly. I'm not terribly upset by the default to search "This Mac" -- it really isn't much of a hassle to have to click the folder button -- but the loss of the ability to choose any folder or group of folders is exactly the kind of "regressive functionality" that should have people flooding feedback with complaints.
Just as ridiculous is the inability to show & sort on any of the metadata columns a normal Finder window offers. And if "Last Opened" is so useful in searches that it is the (unchangeable) default, why isn't it available in any other Finder view?
Plus, does anybody really understand how the "File Name" option works? It rarely seems to make a difference -- I often enter a search phrase, look at the results, then switch to the File Name option & still see files that clearly do not have the search phrase or any part of it in their names.
More: Try a search on Kind "Other" & enter the "Kind" info from a file's Get Info Box. Try "Application (Classic)" & note that it finds any you might have. But try "Application (Universal)" or "Application (PowerPC)" & you get ... nothing. Try just "Application (" & you get all apps. Try "Classic" & once again, any Classic apps show up, but try "Universal" or "PowerPC" & you get nothing. It's the same with many other file kinds -- sometimes the "Get Info" file kind string or some part of it works, sometimes not. Worse, the same is true for the "Kind" info taken directly from Finder windows. Try entering "Plain Text" in the Kind-Other search. I have hundreds of these but the search turns up exactly one, & it isn't even in my Documents folder.
(Before anybody suggests it, yes I have rebuilt the Spotlight index repeatedly, using both the Privacy pane method & Terminal commands, & it makes no difference.)
The point is not to rant but to demonstrate how poorly thought out & unreliable the app remains. I feel the problems are so obvious & widespread that we should not have to use the feedback page to tell Apple about them, but apparently we do. It really is as if it was designed by people that don't have a clue about what a search engine should do or how to integrate it into a user friendly environment.

  • Set the Finder's Search Box default to current folder? How?

How do I set the the Finder's default Search Box parameters to be the current folder that I'm in, instead of searching the whole flamin' computer? (I have to quickly click on the folder name) And also instead of the default being 'Contents', how can I set it to be 'File Name'? It would speed up so many of my searches. I could still click on 'This Mac' to get that, and 'Contents' likewise.
    Tks in advance
    Drew

I complitely agree and very very frustrated with that problem too just wrote this to feedback system:
The problem that many people find is that when you have a finder windows open and that you browse a file like "Appplication" then due to the large number of application you use the search bar by taping the application name.
That's where the problem come from.
Once you tape the application name it start searching in the all computer ! instated of in the file
The second problem is that he is searching the content and it will be better to have as default by file name.
If i wanted to do that kind of search i will use the spolight button next to the clock and people want that search bar in finder to be searching in the folder you are in not all computer.
Last problem is that we don't have a custom option in spotlight preference or finder preference.
I would recommend to have that default search in finder change to search in file ONLY and to add Spotlight option in the Finder Preference for people to be able of customizing it.
When you use that search bar everyday many times a day it becomes very very frustrating.

  • ICloud Drive shows 'Encrypted Folder' and 'Encrypted File' instead of correct folder and files names

On my 2014 MBA (10.10.2), I added a group of folders and files to iCloud Drive in Finder by dragging and dropping.  I do not use disk encryption.  The files are of various types (mostly jpeg/pdf, and a few docx).  I can see the files when I login to iCloud.com, they are not showing as encrypted.  But on my iPad2 8.2 the folders and files show as Encrypted Files and Folders (Settings-iCloud-Storage-Manage Storage-Other Documents (under Documents and Data).  I have tried opening these with "authorized apps" on the iPad2, but the apps don't see these files.  Two questions: 1. Why are these showing as encrypted, i have no idea what is on the iPad2?; and 2. Once I can get an answer to 1., will I be able to open these jpeg and pdf files on the iPad2.  Thanks.

Sorry we aren't communicating.  This doesn't have anything to do with a program being associated with the file.  No regular app can open an encrypted file.  Here is the final outcome.  For some reason, after 2 days, these files now show up as unencrypted files in iCloud Drive on the iPad.  That is they now match up by name and extension with what I have on the MBA in Finder.  There is no explanation except that iCloud Drive is buggy.

I am not attempting to install windows 8? at all so why this is coming up is beyond me I am using Win7 64 Pro and am quite happy with that version.
Is all of this just some attempt at someone to install windows 8 on my system through the comcast internet system?
I also have now searched for the file that was next to the folder: "AppAndDeviceInventory.log" and got this:
    http://www.exclusive-networks.be/Vendors/mobileiron/
It looks like someone is or has installed an application to make my windows send data over the internet or network. Making my entire windows system hosed with this. Or has someone any idea of how to get rid of it?
    Thanks ahead!

    Hi,
These files are just some temporary file created by using the system. You could delete them manually via disk cleanup:

  • How do I specify folder and file options for memory cards in LR4?

    Hello!
I have read the sections Set import and file-handling preferences and Specify Auto Import settings in the manual. But they don't seem to answer my question. The other stuff that's written about importing files in Lightroom seem to only cover the import of photos to the Lightroom catalog, which is not my primary concern, although I do want them imported to the catalog as well. But before the photos can go to the Lightroom catalog they need to be improted, in other words copied over from the memory card to the local disk drive. Simply put, all I want is for Lightroom to take over the responsibility from Canon EOS Utility and behave the same way when importing/copying files to the local disk drive. How do I set up Lightroom to do just that?
I just want this type of folder and file structure:
    J:\2010_08_02\IMG_0037.JPG
    J:\2010_08_02\IMG_0039.JPG
    J:\2010_08_22\IMG_0372.CR2
    J:\2010_08_22\IMG_0372.JPG
    J:\2010_11_29\IMG_1405.CR2
    J:\2010_11_29\IMG_1405.JPG
    J:\2011_06_17\IMG_2887.CR2
    J:\2011_06_17\IMG_2887.JPG
    ... etc!
    1. First things first, where the heck do I specify the destination folder for new photos?
There is an option titled Show import dialog when a memory card is detected under the General tab in Preferences, but there is no folder destination option associated with this.
    2. How do I tell Lightroom to leave original file names as they are (i.e. IMG_2887.CR2) and place them in a new sub-folder (i.e. 2011_06_17) of the destination folder (J:\) named after the capture date of the photo (July 17, 2011)?
There are a few options under the File Handling tab in the Preferences, but they don't seem to concern the importation of files to the local disk drive.
    3. This maybe should have been the first question really; is Lightroom capable of importing files from the camera or a card reader to the local disk drive at all?
I sure would expect it to be able to do that, but from the looks of it I am not too confident about that.
For starters I would like it to just copy my photo files, either directly from camera or from a card reader to a destination folder of my choice, in the same fashion that Canon EOS Utility does it. I don't wat to just import the files to the Lightroom catalog and start working with the files directly from camera or memory card. Hell no! It's not an external disk drive for God's sake!
    Please advise!

I'm not sure how it is now, but there used to be a dedicated "photo downloader" in Adobe Photoshop Elements at least up to version 6. Is this still part of Photoshop Elements? Or is it just available in Adobe Bridge? I don't remember though if it only imported files to the local disk drive or if it also added them to the library/catalog.
I've tested Downloader Pro and Lightroom 4 now for importing the photos to local disk drive. I also tested one application called Cam2PC Image Downloader.
The latter is actually called Cam2PC Image Browser and as its name suggests it's a software for browsing and doing basic changes to the photos, an image organizer. But it has a dedicated downlaoder called Cam2PC Image Downloader that can be very useful for importing photos. It comes either as a payed version or a freeware version.
I also tested one called Smart Photo Import. This one could be a good alternative to Downloader Pro, but I think it still needs many improvements, and it lacks a lot of the functionality of Downloader Pro. But to be fair, this does cost half as much as Downloader Pro (13 EUR or 17 USD compared to 30 USD).
I am most impressed by Downloader Pro. It has everything I could ask for really. But I was most impressed by its speed. I've done a simple speed test to see which one is faster and here are the results.
    Downloader Pro
    324 files (162 JPG & 162 CR2)
    Max speed: 21,25 MB/s
    Time: 02:58.6
    Lightroom 4
    Set to render "Standard" previews
    324 files (162 JPG & 162 CR2)
    Max speed: N/A
    Time: 03:41.7
Compared to Downloader Pro: 78% done at 02:58.6
    Rendering time: 04:35.5
    Total: 08:16.12
    Cam2PC Image Downloader
    324 files (162 JPG & 162 CR2)
    Max speed: N/A
    Time: 03:30.6
The max speed is the maximum transfer speed that ever occured during the transfer, and this is not something that the application is showing on it's own, it's the highest speed that I have seen with my own eyes. Unfortunately the other applications had no way of showing the speed, only Downloader Pro could show the speed. That's why it says N/A (as in not available).
As you can see Downloader Pro did the same job in shortest amount of time. Note that I could be transfering 2 or 3 cards worth of photos for the time it takes Lightroom to transfer just one.
The memory card was full when I started the test. It was a 4 GB Sandisk Ultra 30 MB/s card. The card reader was a Lexar USB 3.0 Professional. Although it was connected to a USB 2.0 port on Intel chipset motherboard (Intel X38, ICH9R). The destination folder was set to Desktop\(name of the application) on a Seagate 500 GB SATA (ST3500320AS) disk. All done on a Windows Vista PC with SP2.
One way to make Lightroom do this job more quickly is to choose "minimum" as previews rendering option. This way it doesn't spend as much time rendering the photos after being copied to the disk drive. Now, I have not tested this but I believe that Lightroom can start a second import of a second memory card whilst the first one is being copied. I'm not sure how it would affect the speed though, and you would need two card readers for this.
I wish I could skip rendering previews alltogether. I like to leave adding photos to the catalog and rendering previews for the last step. This is because it takes so long time and I like to use 1:1 previews, so I like leaving Lightroom to do this job in the morning or over the night.
I have learned to use prests now in the import dialog of Lightroom. So now it should not be a problem if I always want to copy new photos to the same location. If this location is changed I can recall it simply by choosing my preset. This is very handy.
All in all, Lightroom is very good at importing photos from camera or from a memory card reader to the local disk drive. But it's now my preferred way of importing photos to the computer. Which is why I have decided to purchase Downloader Pro. Thanks all for your help. I appreciate it!

  • How to loop folder , sub folder and files in the sql server ?

    Hi,

  • Where within CS6 Photoshop will I find the folder and file to clear the scratch disk on my harddrive ???

Where is the folder (and file) to erase the scratch disk ...

    There is no such folder.
The scratch file gets erased as soon as you close the file that was using it.
The rule of thumb I follow to figure out scratch space says to figure on 50 to 100 times the size of your largest file ever multiplied by the number of files you have open.  I have seen the scratch file exceed 800 GB once, an admittedly rare occurrence, but it often exceeds 200 GB when stitching large panoramas and the like.
As an example—and stressing that I'm aware that others have even more scratch space than I do—I keep two dedicated, physically separate hard drives as my primary and secondary Photoshop scratch disks and a lot of GB free on my boot drive for the OS.  I also have 16 GB of RAM installed.
Additionally, if you only have a single HD, i.e. your boot drive, you'd need it to be large enough to accommodate both the swap files of the OS as well as Photoshop's scratch.

  • Install iTunes 10.4.1 install error - The Folder Path "File Name" contains an invalid character

Upgraded computer from XP Prof 32-Bit to Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit (Upgrade package, performed Custom Install).
Attempt to install iTunes 10.4.1 for 64-Bit.  Receiving the following error/problem:
The Folder Path "File Name on my external drive" contains an invalid character
I click ok and then get this:
The Installer encountered errors before iTunes could be configured.  Errors occurred during installation.  Your system could not be modified,  Please run the installer again, or click Finish to exit.
    Any fixes for this?

Sorry, one of us is not managing to be clear enough.
Does the message read The Folder Path "File Name on my external drive" contains an invalid character or perhaps The Folder Path "<some path name here>" contains an invalid character?
If so, then the problem might be just what it says it is with the path name in question... Either way if you list the path given in the error message in a reply to this thread it might provide a clue for anyone tying to help with the problem.
You could try downloading the installer to C:\iTunesSetup.exe in case that helps.

I would like now to insert an option/control for two issues: selection of the directory where the data will be saved, and selection of the file name. How can I do this such that after I press 'start' I should be asked which is the directory where I want the data to be saved and then what is the file name?
Another option would be the following: After I press 'Start' I will have a control where I can write or browse for the folder where I want to save the data; then I have another controller where I write the new file name. So in this case I should not be prompted except the case when I am trying to use the same file name.
    Where should I con
nect this new subvi in my loop - before the tasksand before the trigger, or after the tasks and before the trigger?
    Thank you.

Programming with LabVIEW might be fun but it is quite time consuming
OK, here is what I want to do.
I have to monitor a machining process. I have to record cutting forces, power consumed, vibrations, and temperature. From each of these sensors I get a voltage as output and I used Measurement and automation and NI-DAQmx to program my tasks (I have LabVIEW Express running in Windows XP).
The triggering of DAQ is generated by the input of a 4.5V DC when the CNC program starts; the stop occurs when CNC program ends and the output voltage becomes 0V. I have finished all the connections and now I have to build the vi.
The small picture could be described this way:
I want to record the parameters and save them in files that I could process later using specific vi.
The big picture would be the following:
I would like to build a stand alone program that will do the following: when I run the program [ i. e. double-click the shortcut (or the file)] a panel should come up in the center of the screen in this panel I would like to be able to select what process am I going to investigate: grinding, turning, milling, drilling, tapping etc.
Once I selected what process I am going to investigate, the front panel of a vi should come up In this panel I should be able to select what parameters I am going to record: forces, power, vibrations, and temperature. On the front panel I should be able to see the waveform of the acquired data. A start/stop button and a led green/red for each parameter should show me the status of the acquisition (green is on, red is off). The start/stop button should allow me to manually start or stop the program at any time. Additionally, on the front panel I should also have icons with a choice for directory (folder) path, file name, and comments regarding the experiment. The date and time should be recorded in the file that is saved. There should be an option (check box or selection icon) for saving the data in binary or ASCII format.
Similar to any program, the front panel should have a toolbar containing File, Operate and Help options. The File option should contain Clear graphs, Setup DAQ and Exit and the Operate option should contain: Use digital alarm, Use digital trigger, and Write data to disk with the option to be selected or deselected. The main front panel should close when I select File -> Exit.
The File -> Setup DAQ selection should bring up another front panel in which I should be able to see the acquisition control panel (device, channels to get, buffer size, units English or metric) and the calibration factors (for the tasks, including triggering voltage) including sampling rate.
Well, thats almost all. I understand I cannot do this all at once. Unfortunately, I have a very close due date in getting the system up and ready. I am hoping that I could get some help setting up a simple program and I could develop the rest step by step later...
Can anybody help me with this program? I have attached a first attempt that would allow automatic triggering and stopping as well as displaying of forces, power and acceleration.
    Thank you in advance.

  • Max length of VI file paths and file names

    Hi,
Is there a maximum allowed length of VI file paths and file names in LabVIEW? I'm running LV 6.0.2i on NT and is trying to save a VI inside a LLB and LabVIEW crashes each time. I have also tried to copy the VI from the LLB to a temp folder with the Librarian VI, but LabVIEW crashes as well. The total length of the file path is around 260 characters and I strongly suspect the file path length in combination with LLB because when I use a shorter path the problem disappear. If I use a long path without LLB (just regular VIs) a warning appear "Invalid file name" instead of LabVIEW crashing.
Does anybody know the solution to this problem or must I use shorter filepaths? Perhaps it depends on which platform I am running
    LV on?
    Sincerely,
    Mattias Ericsson

I believe windows has a 255 character pathname (file+path) limit. We once
had that problem because we had a long filename and a longer pathname.
Moved the directory up a couple levels and problem solved.

  • How do you rearrange photos in a folder by file name?

How do you rearrange photos in a folder by file name on an ipad?

I don't believe it's possible under the standard "Photos" app (built-in) in iOS.
However, there appear to be many downloadable apps that will allow you to do this. Search the App Store for something like "photo sort".
You may also want to leave Apple your feedback in regards to this at:

  • Check image details like resolution, dimensions, color mode, file format, file size and file name

I have 1000 images in a folder, i want to check their details like resolution, dimensions, color mode, file format, file size and file name into excel with nice user interface.
Pls help me, m just learning ABCD in VB.

The code in the file at the link below might give you a starting point. Firstly it gives you the opportunity to list all of the properties of a file type and then you can select the properties that you want and the second utility gives you the
opportunity to list the selected properties for all files in a selected folder.
Download and extract the file and open the file in Excel.
Click the first button List Meta Data for One File (Run first)
Navigate to and Select any ONE individual photo file. (Photo files because that is what you indicated you are working with.)
You will be presented with a list of the available properties for the file. Where the Item value is blank, that property is not recorded for the particular file. Different file types have different properties and it is also dependent on how the file
was created but generally if all of the files come from the same source then the same properties are recorded for all files from that source.
Now insert a Y in column D for all of the required properties. (Don't select any with the Item value blank)
Click the second button List Selected Meta Data for all Files in a Folder (Run after selecting the required properties).
Next select a folder where the files reside. (You might need to back up to the folder if dialog is blank because it will not show individual files because the code only allows Folders.)
You will be presented with a report listing all of the selected properties for all of the files in the selected folder.
The user interface is not that great but you can improve on that if you want to with a Userform as you get to know VBA a little better.
    Download the file from here.

  • Rescue and Recovery: is long path and file name OK?

I am using T61 6466 5wG. For full system backup I am using R&R 4.21, and a WD Mybook USB HDD. I did regular backup before using R&R. When a virus attack happened, I tried to recovery my computer, but then I found I only get the folders back while not the files inside. Then I tried to find something back by using the function of "restore individual files", but nothing found still. Most of the lost files have common features, either very long file name or very long folder and path name. One noticing that the size of each backup file is pretty large and reasonable.
So I am wondering what was actually happened to my backup and restore? Is it a backup failure or a restore failure? Dose the R&R have problem with very long file names or path names? If it is only a restore failure, is there any possibilty to find my old files back?

thanks for the info.,you could also try long path tool. it helped me with error 1320 in Win 7.,

  • Get path and file name from Bfile

    Hi,
I'm using Bfile to store images in a database. Is there a way to get the path and file name of the image from Bfile, because I need to pass that information into an image processing function.
    Many thanks.
