Search & Spotlight not finding specific words

I have a friend who has a G5 and is running the latest version of Tiger. She has 2 related jpg files---one for the normal size (labeled wallpaper.jpg) and the other is a thumbnail (labeled wallpaperthumb.jpg). When she searches for "wallpaper" both files come up, but when she searches for "thumb" nothing comes up. She's used search and spotlight...both have the same results.
We've zapped the pram, repaired permissions, trashed the finder, and dragged the volume to the privacy tab in spotlight and then removed it. What's next?????
Please help! Thanks!

If you are searching for a string in the filename not set off as a separate word by punctuation, space, or change of case, you need to use ⌘ F Finder search.
Click on the criteria button (Kind, or Last Modified) and select 'Name'. On the same line (in the space on that line) you can enter the string you are looking for.

  • YIKES! "Searching" & Spotlight not finding

    OK, I'm scared. I copy the name of a file. I do a Cmd + F and paste the name of the file into the "Search for" field. Nothing. I have only one criteria, "Kind" "Any" I ask to search the directory it's in. No response. I remove and add the directory to the parameters continually. No response.
    Spotlight not finding it either.
    I try others. Same thing. Spotlight preferences are factory default and include "Music."
    I have two files with the string I am looking for, one in a directory on my hard drive, not locked, I read and write to it daily. The other file is on a CD.
    I ask to search both places. Spotlight finds the string on the CD but not on my hard drive. I started trying other files in other directories and I'm getting the same thing in the Finder Search. Spotlight not as bad, but still has problems.
    This string is "stoddard." The file on the drive is actually located in two different directories and is labeled "1.01_stoddard.mp3" The one that it does find on the CD is "AUGUST 6 STODDARD.mp3"
    Help me. This is scaring me. I've got tons of people I am converting to Mac. This is not going to go over well.
    I've been looking and I just can't find any options or parameters I should be checking that would affect this. This is pretty simple stuff.
    I tried looking for envelope.rtf which is in a completely different directory and Search did not find it though Spotlight did.

    My results are disturbing. My eMac G4 doesn't seem to have a problem with finding files. My G5 definitely does. And it has a few other funny glitches, like a couple of my Mail filters are wonky. I've set up hundreds of them and there are three that are just plain stuck and send the mail to unexpected places or don't filter at all.
    Since the Spotlight glitch is intermittent, I don't think we can set up any benchmarks between us. Because Spotlight might not find envelope.rtf on my system, doesn't mean it won't find the filename on yours.
    What you need to do is search for various files on your system and see if Spotlight finds them.
    I doubt this is a string recognition problem, it's likely a search program error at the processor level. Probably something to do with the logic that makes the search appear speedy. Likely there's something in that programming that "falls out" when G5 is processing.
    Apple is ****-bent on getting the G6 out there pronto. These anomalies may be why.
    -Wm
    Your results are strange.
    If I try using your "1.01_stoddard.mp3" filename I
    find the file with the Spotlight menu, the Spotlight
    window and a smart folder.
    If I delete the file, then search for it again
    "1.01_stoddard.mp3" it is, of course not found, then
    I create a new file and rename it to
    "1.01_stoddard.mp3" Spotlight finds it immediately.
    Do you want to try to debug this here in the
    discussion?

  • The Firefox find function seems to have become CAPS or non-caps specific, so that typing a word in non-caps will not find matching words with one or more capital letter.

    The find function seems to have changed in Firefox. Before, when doing a (CTRL + F) find, the search was not CAPS-specific or non-caps-specific. In other words, if I typed in "firefox" (no caps), it would find the words "firefox", Firefox", or "FIREFOX", regardless of capitalization. Now, however, the find function will only match the exact same capitalization. This totally undermines the usefulness of the function, and is a major hassle. Please fix it.

    I am having a similar problem. The following page has the word Dangerfield in several times. My browser will get to Dang and turns pink

    Is it my Browser or is there a problem with Mozilla?
    I have also noted on other Google searches the same problem. Te term is listed in the page but Ctl F will not find the term

  • Search doesn't find the words water or plants!  What can I do to fix this?

    OK, you're not going to believe this.  Search cannot find any events with the words water or plants in them!  Here's the background.  I had multiple calendar entries for "Water Plants".  I deleted one, then deleted the other.  I then entered a new event called "Water Plants."  Search does not find it.  It finds every other event, but not that one.
    Now, here comes the even stranger part.  I added the word stargaze in front of the entry--so it reads "Stargaze water plants" -- and it finds the event if I search for stargaze.  In fact, I can add virtually anything in front of water plants and it finds it.  It'll even find "Warm water plants" (search for "warm") but not "water plants" or "water water plants."
    I've tried several things.  I  did the home button--power button hold til restart, no change.  I synched via iTunes; no change.  I've deleted the event, switched to a different day, and added it again.  No dice.   I've turned off and on again the Events option in Spotlight Seach setting.  No luck.  I even reordered the search items (putting events at the top of the search or in different places).
    It also won't find the event if I search for just "plants".    I just created two additional events:  "Plants" and "Warm water" and it cannot find them if I search for "water" or "plants".  "Wa" "Pl", etc. do not work.  Create "Stargaze" again and I can find it.
    Any ideas?  It's as if my having deleted two events deleted the words (and subsets of letters) from the Spotlight Search vocabulary.

    Try: Settings>General>Spotlight Search...remove the checks next to every item, then reset your phone: Press the Sleep/Wake button & Home button at the same time, keep pressing until you see the Apple logo, then release. Now, go back into Settings & turn back on what items you want for Spotlight Search.

  • How to finds specific words in each sentence?

    import java.io.*;
    import java.text.*;
    import java.util.*;
    public class FindingWordsSpecific {
         static String[] days = {"Sunday", "Monday", "Tuesday", "Wednesday", "Thursday", "Friday", "Saturday", "every Tuesday"};
      public static void main( String args[] ) throws IOException {
               // the file must be called 'myfile.txt'
               String s = "myfile.txt";
               File f = new File(s);
               if (!f.exists())
                    System.out.println("\'" + s + "\' does not exit. Bye!");
                    return;
               BufferedReader inputFile = new BufferedReader(new FileReader(s));
               String line;
               int nLines = 0;
               while ((line = inputFile.readLine()) != null)
                    nLines++;
                   System.out.println(findTheIndex(line));
               inputFile.close();
           public static String findTheIndex(String sentence){
                String result = "";
                String[] s = sentence.split("\\s");
              for (String s1: s){
                   for (String s2: days){
                        if (s1.equalsIgnoreCase(s2)) {
                             if(s2.matches("every Tuesday")){
                                             }else if (s2.matches("every Wednesday")){
                                              }What is wrong with it because I tried to find "every Tuesday" in
    myfile.txt: "Go fishing every Tuesday and every Wednesday"
    There is big problem with split statement because it takes each word not more than a word.
    I need to have "every Tuesday" not "Tuesday". How to make it correct codes?

    I am going to give you a picture of how the output will look.
    Here are two sentences from myfile.txt:
    Go fishing every Tuesday and every Wednesday
    Meet with research students on Thursday
    I need to read from myfile.txt and to find specific words in each sentences like this output:
    Every Tuesday : Go fishing
    Every Wednesday : Go fishing
    Thursday : Meet with research students
    Ok. make sense? Now I am trying to figure out how to find specific words in each sentence from myfile.txt.
    That is why I have difficult with the splits statement and loops. Like this:
           public static String findTheIndex(String sentence){
                String result = "";
                String[] s = sentence.split("\\s");
              for (String s1: s){
                   for (String s2: days){
                        if (s1.equalsIgnoreCase(s2)) {
                             if(s2.matches("every Tuesday")){
                             }else if(s2.matches("every Wednesday")){
                             }else if(s2.matches("Thursday")){
                             }else{
                                  System.out.println("That sentence is not working");
                return result;
      }So look at the "Thursday" it is working the output because I have split statement to give me only one word not more than
    a word in sentence. So there is big problem with more than a word in sentence like this "every Tuesday" and it won't work at all because of split. Could you please help me how to do that? I appreciated for that help. Thanks.

    I tried to follow the instruction of buying iphone apps without a credit card. I follow the steps and I selected United States, but when I fill up the credit card info, i could not find the word "None". Anyone know what should I do?

    When you tried to contact Support with the card's images how were you trying to do it, on your phone or a browser on your computer ? And have you tried a different browser to see if you get the same error message ?
    As well as images of the card they might also want an image of its receipt.
    And to contact Support you were using : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ , and clicked on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then iTunes Cards And Codes ?

  • Exchange 2010 Outlook search can not find messages older than 1 year

    Hello,
    I have an exchange 2010 sp2 server. One of my users complains that Outlook search can not find any message older than 1 year. He have all his 5 year mails in the mailbox, but looks like search engine cant recognise them :(
    Any thoughts? thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    Please verify that indexing is complete in Outlook:
    1. In Outlook, click in the Search box.
    2. Click the Search tab, click Search Tools, and then click Indexing Status.
    3. When the Indexing Status dialog appears, you should see the following:
    Outlook has finished indexing all of your items.
    0 items remaining to be indexed.
    Besides, please use the Search-Mailbox cmdlet to check if you can get messages older than one year in this user mailbox.
    Best regards,

  • Error - "Can not find Microsoft Word installed.."

    Hi,
    I downloaded RH6 demo to test it, but can't generate a
    printed documentation.
    When I try, I only get an error message
    "Can not find Microsoft Word installed on your system"
    I have no idea why this happens. First, in the layout
    settings I have set .pdf to be produced - DOC option is not
    checked.
    Also, MS Word is installed (Office 2003), and in Tools /
    Options / HTML Editors Word 2003 is listed, with a correct path to
    Winword.exe (which I reselected, just in case) .
    This happens on Windows Vista Ultimate edition, UAC off.
    Other layouts are generated normally.
    Any idea how to fix it?
    Thanks

    RH6 is not supported under Vista.
    I cover this in the article I wrote for Adobe's DevNet pages.
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/robohelp/articles/get_started.html
    It is also covered in the Getting Started Guide that ships
    with the product. A soft copy can be found at
    http://www.adobe.com/support/robohelp/documentation.html
    See also Snippets on my site where there is a reference to a
    forum post about running RH6 under Vista.
    When you installed RH6 did it find Word on your system then?
    Did you install using your logon with admin rights attached?

  • How can I search for document content, specific words, in my scanned (and searchable) pdf files?

    When using spotloght to search my files for text within a scanned document, I may or may not find documents that were scanned by a scan program (ScanSnap) to a searchable PDF file on a firewire attached drive.
    Is there a specific manner that yeilds useable results 100% of the time?

    Spotlight should index PDF files (as well as Word and some other kinds of files) but it seems that PDFs are not created equal. I've seen and heard complaints that some scanner/OCR programs are saving files that aren't searchable and yours is one of them. Try opening one of the files in Preview and resaving it.

  • Spotlight not finding text in Powerpoint files

    When searching for text in .ppt files, Spotlight seems to find some, but not all text content.
    I can't see anything different about the text it is not finding.
    Anyone else had this problem?

    I think the problem is only with Powerpoint 2008 (both ppt and pptx formats).
    There is no obvious pattern: I just created a copy of a file, and Spotlight found a word in the copy but not the original (or previous copies). This word was in a heading text field, but words in the main text field on the same page are still not found.

  • Spotlight not finding files on my Hard Drive - permissions issue?

    I found that Spotlight in Mountain Lion was often not finding files when searching for words within the file (searching file names seemed to be OK).
    I found various threads suggesting that it may be a problem with File Permissions. I use Dropbox and was concerned it may have messed up permissions after a relinking a while ago.
    I tried to reset permissions from within Dropbox (under Settings, as suggested by some), but no help.
    Finally I found this EXCELLENT TIP to reset permissions from within the Repair Utility (in Mountain Lion), Not the Disk Utility, which I had not been aware of:https://discussions.apple.com/message/20421138#20421138
    It took a little while and then Spotlight re-indexed all my files. SO FAR it seems to be working well.
    THANK YOU!!

    Might try this...
    Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
    Then move these files to the Desktop for now...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
    PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • Why is spotlight not finding items I know are there?

    I am using spotlight to find items on my Mac, on most searches it comes up empty even when I know the subject I am looking for is there.

    Check Finder preferences, Advanced, to see that searches are for yoour "Mac" as opposed to "current folder" or "previous search scope".
    You need to spell what you are looking for exactly.
    Make sure the desired drives are not in the Privacy settings for Spotlight system preferences.
    Also try using the Finder's Find (command-F).  It also uses spotlight but allows more specific kinds of searches (e.g., search for just a filename as opposed to the normal spotlight search which seaches filenames and file contents).
    You might find using a utility like Find any File more convenient and easier to use to qualify searches.

  • Find specific word in MS Word, copy containing paragraph, paste to Excel

    Hi, I'm a complete newbie to programming and scripting, and I searched a bunch of forums for this question and found something similar, but never the full answer neither for automator nor Applescript.
    Please help me do this kind of operation.
    1.Search a 200-page MS Word document for a specific word.
    2.Select the whole paragraph containing the word and copy it to clipboard.
    3.Paste this paragraph to Excel document(the next cell in the column)
    Basically, I need to analyze the mood of the paragraph with mentioned word in a massive of irrelevant info. And I want to get a nice column in Excel so I could filter all the useless information.
    Please help me create this script and/or give me some links where I can read something similar.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello, I'm also a total newbie to scripting (started about a week ago).
    I tried to work out how to do what you asked using my very limited knowledge and managed to create a script that it very long and clumsy and only works half the time. I'm not certain it does exactly what you want either..
    set x to text returned of (display dialog "What word would you like to search for?" default answer "")
    tell application "Microsoft Word"
    activate
    tell application "System Events"
    set CR to ASCII character of 13
    keystroke "f" using command down
    keystroke x & CR
    delay 1
    keystroke "w" using command down
    delay 1
    key code 126 using {command down, shift down}
    delay 1
    keystroke "c" using command down
    delay 1
    end tell
    tell application "TextEdit"
    activate
    tell application "System Events"
    keystroke "n" using command down
    keystroke "v" using command down
    tell application "Microsoft Word"
    activate
    tell application "System Events"
    key code 125 using {command down, shift down}
    delay 1
    keystroke "c" using command down
    end tell
    tell application "TextEdit"
    activate
    tell application "System Events"
    keystroke "v" using command down
    keystroke "a" using command down
    keystroke "c" using command down
    tell application "Microsoft Excel"
    activate
    delay 3
    tell application "System Events"
    set CR to ASCII character of 13
    keystroke "v" using command down
    CR
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell
    Haha I doubt that helps but I felt like trying anyway...
    Other stuff:
    When the dialog box comes up at the beginning, for some reason it wont run the script properly if you press enter so you have to actually click continue.
    Also I made it copy to TextEdit instead of clipboard as I cant seem to find that on my computer.
    I hope someone with more knowledge than me comes along soon!
