Search Text Include Folder Names

It appears that when I create a filter searching specific text, the text values of the underlying folders that the images are in are not being considered.  For instance if my folder structure was YYYY\Event\Eventsub1\Eventsub2 and I wanted to search for all images that involved Eventsub1 or Event over multiple years, it doesn't seem to consider the folder name as searchable for the filter function.
Because I had a prior structure before moving over to LR (starting with beta) I have been reluctant to eliminate the structure altogether and rely solely on keywords as it is also easy to find images when outside of LR in this familiar structure.  This has led to including a "theme" keyword with each image that pretty much is the Eventsub2 subfolder, then create a keyword structure equal to Event\Eventsub1 and drag the new keyword under that structure for organization.  This seems to be duplicative, and error prone.
So ... my question, is anyone else able to search for images in folders with names that include text "xxxxxx"?
Thank.

It seems to have worked for me.  I went to All Photographs and entered the name of a folder.  For me it's kind of difficult because I often have other tags the same as the folder names, but I think my test was correct.
You might want to consider using other metadata fields besides just keywords.  I use the field Job Identifier to identify pictures taken on trips or other identifiable groups of pictures (an example might be France 2009).  It is usually the same as my folder structure (or a superset thereof, actually, because I usually have subdirectories by date) but I thought this gives me two ways to find things and if pictures get out of their file structure they still have that identifying information in the metadata.  More commonly used tags are title and caption.  Different people use one or the other for their primary "caption", depending probably on the other tools they use and their flexibility, or lack thereof, but that leaves the second one for something else.  Also, there are a set of location fields which I usually fill in.  City, State, Country are obvious, but the other one, called simply Location, can be more general.  I let the GPS program fill it in but I often change it to something else.  For example, Somethingorother State Park.

  • Application to grab text from folder names?

    I doubt there is software for this - if there isn't there needs to be - it'd make a killing!
    I'm looking for an app that can grab texts from folder names...what i mean is let's say
    on my desktop I have a folder titled "Movies", and inside that folder are hundreds of folders -
    each folder containing a movie.  Each folder is a title of a movie.  I would like to somehow select
    all of these folders and grab the text off of each folder - to catalogue my movies into a simple text file.
    I know I could open a word doc or txt doc and go one-by-one but i have thousands of movies and this
    would take forever. Please tell me there is an application that can save me some time with this.
    thanks.

    Niel - you rule!
    i couldn't get what you wrote to work - i tried inputting different paths, etc.  i'm probably doing something wrong -
    but i used this script
    tell application "Finder"
              get name of folders of folder ("/Users/macbookpro/Desktop/movies" as POSIX file)
    end tell
    and it worked. thanks again.

  • How do I use search/find to search for a folder name

    I can successfully use Spotlight and Search in Finder and Mail to find files and emails based on their titles and contents, but how to I use the search functions to find a FOLDER by its name, that I have somehere in my nests of folders - so I can then look inside that folder for what I am looking for.
    The search results never seem to show up any folder names?

    I do have several levels of nested email folders and several hundred folders created over the years. So I was hoping to be able to search for a folder's name, and be taken to it to see it and all of its contents.
    The best I seem to be able to do is search for a word that I hope I remember is in one of the emails in that folder, and then find that email in the search results list - but that list still doesn't tell me where the folder in the nested heirarchy that is my mailbox

  • Enhanment Idea: Search photo by folder name

    Hi,
    I would like to search photos in LR as I would do in Explorer.
    I don't use tags, but I give folder names meaningfull names.
    So for example if I have
    Mark in Boston
    Peter in New York
    Mark in Rome
    I would like to do  a search like
    1)
    Find of pictures that whose's folders contains "*Mark*"
    and this will pick "Mark in Boston" and "Mark in Rome"
    2)
    Find "Mark" or "Peter"
    and he will give me pictures from all the threee directory.
    It could be good if we could also actually filter the directory trees based on some parameters.

  • How do I search for a Folder (name) inside a folder?

    I am using FF 3.6.3, I an attempting to use FF Search to locate a specific Folder, which I placed inside another Folder.
    In this case, I have a Folder entitled 'Health' (no quotes), I research, and have various health-issues placed inside this folder. I am attempting to place new bookmarks within the aforementioned folder, however I only receive the various prior bookmarks, and it seems that 'FF Search' is incapable at this time to inform me as to which folder my previous bookmarks with this particular (specific) Health Issue are located within.
    I would also like to take it out of that folder, and perhaps place it in General Bookmarks so that I will not lose track of it again.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.

    You can install this add-on t0 add a column to the Library window ( Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks ) to indicate which Folders your search items are located:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/7372
    Once installed, in the Library window, click Views > Show Columns then click Parent Folder to show that column in the search results area.

  • A Few SEO Questions: Alt="" text and file/folder names.

    I've been reading about the Dark Art of SEO and frankly, a lot of it is more confusing than I anticipated.  Anyway, I'll summarise a bit here.I have read that:
    File/folder names are better with meaningful words and hyphenated words.  so DCM000123.jpg in a folder called galimg would be better as: /gallery-images/painting-title-here.jpg
    Alt="" text can add to the content of your pages.
    My thinking underneath this relates to a gallery site I built with around 200 individual paintings in it.  So the site has a lot of content but not a lot of text.  I wonder if I should start trawling through all of this to change the file names and folders and add alt="" text more meaningfully to help with SEO?
    So if my thinking is OK, here are the questions.
    How would you put the alt="" text on individual images?  I imagine that it should just be a straight-forward, what-you-see description?  But there are a few other options.  Suppose I have an image that the artist has titled, "Cattle on a Hill" and it's an oil on canvas.  I could make that into,
    alt="Oil on Canvas: Cattle on a Hill" or
    alt="Cattle on a Hill" or
    alt="A group of cows grazing in pasture under moonlight." or
    Suppose I have 20 images in a portrait gallery:
    alt="Portrait.  Oil on canvas: Joe Bloggs" or
    alt="Portrait.  Joe Bloggs" or
    alt="Man with grey hair wearing a blue shirt sitting on a bench" or
    alt="Portrait painting.  Oil on canvas. Joe Bloggs: Man with gray hair wearing a blue shirt sitting on a bench"
    The second part of the question also includes the problem that if I have 20 images in a single gallery page and I put "Portrait painting" in each alt="" text is that going to look like key word stuffing?
    Now on to the file name thing.  Should the file names be portrait-painting-01 and so on or should they be Cattle-on-hill or what?
    Final question: am I making too much of all this?
    Thanks
    Martin

    First of all, stay away from spaces in file names AT ALL COST.
    The examples you cited would look like:
    alt="Oil%20on%20Canvas:%20Cattle%20on%20a%20Hill" or
    alt="Cattle%20on%20a%20Hill" or
    alt="A%20group%20of%20cows%20grazing%20in%20pasture%20under%20moonlight."
    to an SE crawler.
    If you really want effective picutres, use Photoshop or Fireworks to embed metadata and THEN add them to your site.
    Alt tags means the text that would appear if the image didn't for some reason. It also helps with accessibility for visually impaired viewers who use plug-ins to allow their browser to "speak" the images to them when the page loads.
    <img src="img/example-1.jpg" width="128" height="160" alt="example-1.jpg" />
    Above is an example of how to add alt text. Dreamweaver actually loads the alt tag automatically unless you've turned it off somehow.
    Either put the info in the Alt box in the properties panel, or in code view, add it between the quotes.
    To the second part of your question, Alt tags are meant for SEO with the images only (Like when you search for images of a certain name or containing certain tags)
    and really have little effect on the page SEO itself. For that type of optimization you want Keywords, and Descriptors in the <head> portion of the
    individual page:
    <meta name="google-site-verification" content="Optimizer code would go here" />
    <meta name="Description" content="Page name, site name, business name, location, phone number, etc. goes here"/>
    <meta name="Keywords" content="Restaurant, Sports bar, Catering, Hotel, Gallery, Car Dealer, Exterminator or whatever describes the site and page as well as content of the pages"/>
    <meta name="author" content="your name here"/>
    <meta name="robots" content="index, follow"/> (This tells search engine crawlers to index this page and each one you add it to,  and follow them site wide)
    <meta name="revisit-after" content="7 days"/> (This tells the crawler when to revisit for updates after it has indexed the site)
    To your last question. No, you're not making too big a deal out of it, if you're talking about exposure for a business. If it's a personal gallery of your favorite vacation pictures? You just might be.

  • Can't include a reset button/process that cleans a search text field

    Hi all
    Using apex 3.0.1 on a XE edition
    In my app there's a report that displays a lot of records.
    I included an text field item, where user can type a search criteria, then i added a button called "search" which, when submitted, display the records where search criteria is included.
    Now, my problem is that i can't put a "reset" button, which, when submmitted, is supposed to clear the search text field, so the report display all records.
    I tried adding a branch that triggers when reset buttos is pressed, clearing cache of search text field. It didn't worked, search string keeps on showing on text field.
    Then i changed the process, instead of clearing cache, setting search text field item with a value of null. Didnt work either...
    Does anyone have a good example of thjis type of reset button???
    tnks in advance....
    Fernando

    yes Earl, i know it's pretty standard...but i got some trouble... anyway, i think it was just a "lapsus brutus" o' mine... It's solved now and here's what i did:
    I created a text field button (where search string will be typed), a "submit as Go" button, and a "submit as reset" button. Then i created an uncondicional branch to same page, then i created a Clear Cache for Item process, where the text field cache is cleared, conditioned when "submit as reset" button is pressed.
    That solved the problem, thnx very much for your help

  • Option to search a folder name in the Mail App

    It would be great, event indispensable for people who's organizing their mailbox in multiple folders, to have the possibility to search a folder name whatever it's in the hierarchy view of the all the folders in the mailbox or when you want to file an email to a specific folder.
    A simple search field on the top of the folders view would be great! That's one thing executive people's that are switching from BlackBerry to iPhone are complaining about.

    tell Apple

  • How do I search the folder tree by parts of a folder name. Is there a folder library similar to the bookmark library to aid folder organization?

    How can I search by email account folder names and bookmark folder names by keywords or parts of folder name? Is there a way to enter and associate keywords to email/bookmark folder names?
    We file all our email transactions and bookmarks in an inverted tree structure under the appropriate ISP account and user name but often end up with duplicate taxonomical entries under multiple ISP accounts such as one for Roadrunner or Google-mail address for the same Windows user account and name. I sometimes create an identical folder in both accounts. Being able to search by foldername across email accounts in the same Windows username would be wonderful to correct bifurcations in folder name taxonomy.
    What am I not doing right - Please?
    Thank you kindly - Chris

    Dear Zenos,
    Thank you ever so much. That was exactly what I'd wished for and need. I have installed it on all five of my computers.
    I have been working on electronics and computers component level and programming since I was a Ham radio operator at age 14. This is one of the few times I've ever asked for an answer to a question and had it so fully satisfied by someone else rather than having to muddle my way through to a solution on my own.
    Now that might not seem to be much praise (if you figure I might be 15) but I was 14 in 1963 and I held the position of senior corporate technical support engineer for Data General Corp. (old mini-computer manufacturer) I've been working on computers since bits were wooden!
    Anyway ... THANKS .. I really mean it!

  • Search by folder name? Monitor folders for changes?

    Im a long time PC user that LOVED how Picasa automatically indexed any locations that I told it to keep track of. I just got Aperture - but so far I am utterly disappointed in the search function.
    When I used to import all of my photos the folder that each import would go under would be the events title.
    For instance if I shot a wedding I would name the folder "John Smith" because in picasa I could just search for "Smith" and it would have all of the files in that folder as results - regardless of their metadata.
    So here I am with a 2 week old Macbook that I love - but I cant find any of the photos that I want to find.
    My library has roughly 40K images - so without the ability to search by folder names it takes me forever to find the files I am looking for.
    *Surely I am an idiot and just dont know how to search by folder name - can someone enlighten me?*
    Also - is it possible for Aperture to monitor certain folders for changes - for instance if I save something to my library folder from photoshop - do I then have to import that one file I just saved? Picasa would just display it under the folder its in - is there any programs for Macs that behave like this?

    aperture can indeed search on the project title. a little harder to find in the filter dialog, but it is there.
    but again, you'll have to import your data differently than i think you did the first time.
    i'm sorry that you're not happy with Aperture doing what you want, but then again, you're upset because it doesn't work with you're old folder structure. Not every application can be expected to be designed for every possible methodology that someone used to manage their existing data. It was set up to be used more visually than your old method and if you can't take the time to organize your photos when you import them to Aperture, then you're right, it probably isn't for you.
    i would suggest you watch the tutorial on searching to see all of the additional metadata you can search by, maybe it would help in some way.... but if not, good luck with LR

  • Search text files in a folder

    Im given a project to implement a text file search engine to search text files in a folder to find matches for a given text and display the path of containing files. Here have to implement all the data structures i use.In order to search matches for given text , first i have to separate txt files and subfolders in a given folder. But i cant think of a way to separate them. does anybody have a solution?
    Thanx!

    Can you try something like this? This lists all the directories and their sub-directories along with the files. Displays the files with paths too.
    public class FileSearch {
         private static final String PATH = "C:\\temp";
              public static void main(String[] args){
                   File file = null;
                   String[] contents = null;
                   file = new File(PATH);
                   contents = file.list();
                   for(String fileDir : contents){
                        file = new File(PATH+"\\"+fileDir);
                        if(file.isDirectory()){
                             System.out.println("["+file+"]");
                             listDirectory(file);
                        else{
                             System.out.println("     "+file);
              public static void listDirectory(File theFile){
                   String[] dirContents = null;
                   String path = theFile.getAbsolutePath();
                   if(theFile.isDirectory()){
                        dirContents = theFile.list();
                        for(String newFile : dirContents){
                             File dirFile = null;
                             dirFile = new File(path+"\\"+newFile);
                             if(dirFile.isDirectory()){
                                  System.out.println("["+dirFile+"]");
                                  listDirectory(dirFile.getAbsoluteFile());
                             else{
                                  System.out.println("     "+dirFile);
                   else{
                        System.out.println("     "+theFile);

  • Script or Automator to reorder text in file/folder name

    Hello,
    Similar to this discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2632228, I would like to reorder a large number of folder names. Currently, they are set up as follows:
    "Name - Year" and would like to change them all to "Year - Name". I have over 200 folders named in this format so I need to find either a way to do this via the automator or via a script. So far I can't find what I need in the Automator. Any ideas? Thank you

    try this:
    set folderList to choose folder with multiple selections allowed
    tell application "System Events"
              repeat with thisFolder in folderList
                        set folderName to name of thisFolder
      -- assumes none of the folders have extensions, or anything aside from "Name - Year", and that there are no spaces inside the name or year
      -- it can be generalized to deal with that, if needed
                        set {oldTID, my text item delimiters} to {my text item delimiters, {" ", "-"}}
                        tell folderName
                                  set {n, d} to {first text item, last text item}
                        end tell
                        set my text item delimiters to oldTID
                        set name of thisFolder to d & " - " & n
              end repeat
    end tell

  • Folder name showing in the search result in SharePoint 2013

    Hello,
    In SharePoint 2013, when user search for a document within a folder, Search content along with Folder name and icon getting displayed in the search result. I am trying to hide Folder name from search result. Please suggest some way to achieve this.
    Thank you
    Jyotiraaditya

    Hi,
    As I understand, you want to search without folders in SharePoint 2013.
    You can do the steps to achieve your request:
    In search center in results page, click Edit page.
    In search results web part, click dropdown in the upper right corner -> click Edit Web Part.
    Click Change query -> in Property filter field -> choose contenttype, not contains, folder  -> click Add property filter -> ok.
    Thanks,
    Dean Wang

  • Folder being searched is included in search results & can be deleted!

    I don't know if this is a new problem, but it was potentially dangerous in my case.
    I have a lot of log files with a specific extension in a folder mixed with a lot of other files. For examples sake, lets say .storage is the extension.
    The folder that all of those files are in is also called Storage.
    Well, I did a Finder search in the folder "Storage" for all the files in that folder with the .storage extension that I wanted to delete, and the top level folder "Storage" was mixed in with the search results. When I selected Command + A to selected them and delete them, the folder "Storage" was also deleted. The is dangerous because that also deleted all the other files in that folder.
    Fortunately I caught that the folder was missing before I emptied the Trash! I think this needs to be fixed?

    Hi Marc,
    Key word in the search result is highlighted, we could refer to the highlight place to find the source.
    Please go to Search Service Application and reset index, then full crawl related content source and see if it could be searched.
    In addition, please post the screenshot of search result at your convenience.
