Search the trash

Is it at all possible to search the trash? Or any specific folder for that matter? I can't figure out how to not just search the entire computer. Thanks

Ah, I see - I empty mine daily because the disk space is not available until the files are gone permanently/the trash is emptied.
In any case, since there is no way to search the trash folder, the easiest way to find something would be the list or column view - you just need to scroll down or jump to the (alphabetical) spot you are looking for.

    How  did you install GarageBand on your Mac? Did it come preinstalled with the other iLife applications?
    If your MacOS supports the AppStore, you should be able to redownload GarageBand from the AppStore, see this support Article: OS X: About OS X Recovery on how to download again:
    Double-click the App Store icon in the dock.
    Enter your Apple ID and password.
    Click Purchases.
    If you haven't previously accepted your bundled iLife applications within the Mac App Store, you should see your iLife applications appear in the Accept portion of the screen. Click Accept.
    You may be asked for your Apple ID and password once again. Your iLife applications now move to the Purchased section. These applications are part of the software that came with your Lion based computer. Your account will not be charged for them. Click Install to complete installation of your applications.

  • Searching the Trash

    Am I doing something wrong or can the Trash folder still not be searched? Snow Leopard allowed for searches in folder to be conducted, by default, inside the folder they were made, which made a great deal of sense. However every time I try searching the Trash folder it searches my whole computer, that seems a little daft.

    Oh come off it. Okay so it sounds like it doesn't work.
    You're the one storing files in the Trash. Whenever I have to search for something I've thrown out in my real trash can, I've got to pretty much dump it out into another place to find what I think I've lost.
    In Finder type cmd+shift-g. Type ~/.Trash into the Go To Folder field. Click Go. Search the resulting window.

  • Can i search the trash?

    i am trying to search for a file in the trash and it seems to revert to the whole computer when i do this. when i try a search for documents folder it stays in documents folder.
    any ideas? is this simply a manual process looking for a file in the trash?
    thanks.

    thanks. that's a great idea.
    i wonder if anyone knows if there is a way to search Time Machine. I need to restore all my pdfs that are over 10 MB and this is going to be a big pain if I can't search for them...
    Hi baltwo. Thanks for the help here. In thinking more about this...
    Do you know if there is a way to know for sure whether opening pdf's with a function (I guess it is a script) such as is described here https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1292868?start=0&tstart=0 (I install these filters and then open the pdf and SaveAs /over/ the existing document) - is likely to leave a copy in the trash, which will be easy to search using your kind suggestion as opposed to searching Time Machine, which may not be so easy?
    I mean, if this thing generated trash versions of the originals I can just find them in the trash and recover the originals...
    Thanks.

    I have searched Finder, Trash and the applications folder but i can't find where it is kept.  I want to put the icon for Dashboard back in the dock - how can i do this?

    The combo update may replace anything you have inadvertently deleted.
    Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
    You can reapply it over the top of any previously downloaded version.  I see that your profile says 10.6.8.
    Then software update to pick up any new security, iTunes updates.

    You can drag them out of the trash folder to wherever you wish. There is no automatic way to restore them.
    If you have a recent backup of your computer (at the risk of preaching, everyone should have one), restore them from there.

    P.S. I have no clue what you did or why you have 44,000 on the external drive

  • I have a new mac and was in launch pad and deleted imovie by accident because it was showing two copies. I have not emptied my trash, but imovie is not in the trash nor is it anywhere when I search the computer for it. What happened? Where is it?

    I just got a new macbook pro. I was in launchpad and there were two imovie icons so I clicked on one and deleted it.
    It seems as though imovie is missing from my computer completely now. I have not emptied the trash, but it is not in there.
    Where has my imovie gone and how do I get it back? I don't understand why it isn't in the trash or anywhere on my computer.
    Please help

    Hi wjosten,
    Yes, I have checked the app folder and there is no imovie in there, there is also nothing in the trash.
    I have also checked the HD for imovie and it seems as though it's just gone?
    Thanks for your help, if you have any other suggestions I would really appreciate them.

  • When I move a file from the desktop to trash, the file only moves to the trash after I open the trash

    So if I have a file on the desktop and I delete it, it makes the 'throwing it in the trash' sound but the trash can icon stays empty (if I don't already have something there) until I click on trash, and the file still appears to be on my desktop until I click the trash. If, after I've moved something to the trash, I then drag the file that seems to still be there around the desktop and drop it somewhere randomly, the file moves itself from the trash back onto the desktop! Can anyone help?
    Thanks, Dan

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Do you have Time Machine setup to backup your hard drive? If so you can use it to recover the files.
    If not you will need to use a file recovery application like SubrosaSoft FileSalvage. It lets you run the application to check the drive for files that can be recovered before having to purchase it. There are other similar applications out there also. You can go to VersionTracker.com and search for "file recovery" to get other possible apps.
    There are recovery services that can do the job for you. They are pretty expensive but if you can't get the recovery application to work they are another option.
    Try to use the computer as little as possible beforehand so you don't run the risk of overwriting the deleted files.

  • I need to access the trash bin in finder (to find files) on my external drive

    the external hard drive i link iphoto to has had an error and basically the iphoto package is hoarding all of my photos so i'm searching everywhere i can to piece back the 1 TB of photos that are gone. data recovery is too expensive from what i have found so i'm left trying to do this! i have another external drive that backs up my entire system on a regular basis throughout the day. i was able to recover the iphoto library from a few months ago before it was deleted (it had been backed up). so i'm only missing a few months of photos now. i was hoping if i could access the trash files (if they're backed up on this drive) that i would find photographs that had been on my desktop and then i'd put in the trash. so i basically want to look in the trash bin that was backed up in several files on this drive (IF that's even possible!) thanks for your help!!!

  • HT1338 Lost all of my 4950 pics!  My daughter said they were in the wrong file and threw them in the trash.  It shows all thumbnails for photos but nothing?  We can't seem to retrieve them?  Anyone know how?  THX

    I'm not sure what to post in?  So here goes.  I'm a photographer and had 4950 pics edited and store on my mac.  My daughter was setting up photo shop and she took iphoto and put it in the trash by accident.  We tried retrieving it and nothing!  It shows that all of the pics all still in iphoto and the thumbnails are there but no pics?  Anyone know how to put these back?  It took me over a year to edit these!  I'm really freaking out!  HELP PLEASE!!!!!   THX

    First locate the file with the name: iPhoto Library
    Search on your Mac for it if need be using the Find command in the File menu.
    When you find this file, hold down the control key and click on it, select Show Package Contents.
    Look for a folder called Originals or Masters. That folder has the original photos.
    The folder called Previews has the edited photos.
    If your iPhoto database is damaged, you might in the worst case have to manually re-import these photos into a new library, but that's only a last resort. Don't move or change anything in the iPhoto Library for now.
    If you found this iPhoto Library file, then you still have your actual photos. Now don't touch those photos or move anything. Close up the iPhoto Library window. Put the iPhoto Library back in your Pictures folder. Run iPhoto and hold down the option key. Select that iPhoto Library when requested to select the iPhoto Library. If that doesn't work, select "other" and navigate to that iPhoto Library and select it.
    Let follks here know which of the above steps worked and which (if any) did not.

  • I have a folder and 3 files stuck on my desktop.  When I drag them to the trash I am asked to enter my administrator's password.  I do this but the files and folder will not delete.  I have checked 'Get Info' on each of them and they are not locked?

    I have an empty folder and 3 .jpg files stuck on my desktop.  When I drag them to the trash I am asked to enter my administrator's password.  I do this but the files and folder will not delete.  I have checked 'Get Info' on each of them and they are not locked and I have full read & write access.  Grateful for any assistance in solving this problem.

    Back up all data.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    ls -@Oaen De* | open -f -a TextEdit
    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
    Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
    A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Post the contents of that window, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    If any personal information appears in the output, anonymize before posting, but don’t remove the context.

  • What is the keyboard shortcut for emptying the trash? I've tried "command-click on the trash folder", but nothing happens.

    I've looked at the articles on keyboard/mouse click shortcuts; and the only reference I saw for emptying the trash said that right clicking on the trash folder would bring up a menu of options and that one of these would be to empty the trash.
    Not the case.
    I'm using Thunderbird 24.3.0 on an mac running OS 10.9.2 . When I use the mac version of right click (that is -- control click) I get the following menu options: Open in New tab * Open in New Window * Rename * Favorite Folder * Properties
    Empty the trash is not among the options. Since this is such a fundamental operation, I would think a keyboard or mouse-click shortcut would be obvious. What am I missing?
    I should add that we manage several email accounts and that they all use "Trash on Local Folders".

    Thank you for the reply. Sadly, it didn't work.
    On a mac, alt and option share the same key. I tried using option/alt in combination with command, control and shift (+f) -- but none worked. None of these combinations did anything at all. Is that a clue? Could a plugin be causing the problem? In search of a resolution, I deactivated most of my Plugins. Those left are:
    * Adobe Acrobat NPAPi Plug-in
    * AdobeExManDetect 1.1.0
    * Flip4Mac Windows Media Plugin
    * Jave Applet Plug-in Java 7 Update 51
    * QuickTime Plug-in 7.7.3
    * Sharepoint Browser Plug-in 14.3.1.
    * Shockwave Flash 12.0.0.70
    Don't know what they do exactly. I have no extensions.
    Does this help?
