Search Windows Space in Leopard: failure

In Snow leopard, trying to search Windows drive/space returns nothing. It is on a separate drive, Mac stuff on another. I can find files manually.

Is it the NTFS (read only) structure that makes search impossible? Or because Leopard can't maintain an index for search. If the answer is that it is impossible to search Windows disk space in Snow Leopard that's what will close this (dumb) forum question.

  • Mail subject line and safari Goggle Search window removing spaces between words

After upgrading to Lion I can no longer type out a subject line in Mac Mail witout the spaces automaicaly being removed. All words run together. Same situation in Safari's Google Search window. No issues in FireFox. Driving me nuts. Any others with this issue?

Found the answer to this issue. I'm amazed this received no responce from the community. Must mean I was the only one with such issue. Amazinly, the exact same thing was happening on three differnt Macs that I loaded Lion to. The answer was given to me by a very helpful and SMART tech person at Apple Care. Two other Apple Care techs were going to have me reinstall the entire OS after wiping my computers clean. I finally found someone that knew what they were doing. He simply took me to Apple>Preferences>Language & Text. Then I selected the Text Tab and then went to the bottom of the window and Reset Default Settings. Bingo, all was fixed. Each machine I did the same thing on and all are working fine now. Hope by me typing this up will help others if needed since not one person responded to this inquirey.

  • Where has search view gone in Leopard

    Hi
Below is a feedback that I have sent to Apple regarding my user experience with Leopard and how things have changed, with the disappointing loss of features and functionality that was present in Tiger. I place this oversight, on Apple's part, on the same level of the disappearance of the hierarchical menus on folder in the Dock. For me it is worse as I never actually used folders in the Dock this way. I do understand the frustrations of those that do though.
    What do you think?
    Read on.
I am repeating this feedback because I find it unbelievable what has happened to searches with Spotlight Finder searches and Smart Folders in the transition to Leopard.
Spotlight searches have improved with added functionality but when it was introduced in Tiger the most exciting and visually usable feature of it was the separation of files into different file type categories in the Finder. I believe this was referred to as the search view and it used blue lines as separators. There was even a search view icon in the tool bar, where the column view usually is, to activate it and this was the default view when using the Finder to search and with smart folders.
This was very useful when working on a project. If I had a history of art project with images for a Picasso, Slavador Dali and Matisse these would be grouped together in a smart folder search and I could jump directly to a slideshow to view them. Now al I get is a jumble of files, images and text documents all together. Yes you can group them by kind but there are a lot more steps involved as there dose not seem to be a default view that sticks in this area: It is a moveable feast.
In any event the older search view was far superior, far more user friendly, and better to look at. The loss of this functionality is a big disappointment in Leopard and I am really surprised that this is not noticed by Apple
The other aspect of Spotlight/Finder/Smart Folder searches which is regressive are the location options at the top of the search windows, below the tool bar. The Options are This Mac or the current folder from which the search is initiated. If you decide that you should have applied the search on the Home folder you get backed out of the search when you you click the Home icon in the Finder sidebar. You then need to type the search word again in the search field and then change the location from This Mac to your user name.
In Tiger there were up to five location options that you could jump to within the search: Server, Computer, Home, the folder location from which you started the search and Others. This allowed searches to take place with far less steps.
The usefulness of the criteria Contents and File Name I would place as a far lower priority.
I hope that Apple can take into account that these criticisms highlight serious flaws in the design and ease of use of Leopard.

I have to say that I completely agree. I have also sent a form in to Apple about this a couple of weeks ago. It is also worth noting that if you wish to search for system files, you have to do so by pressing Opt-Cmd-Space, Pressing the + button on the filters bar, clicking the left drop-down menu, selecting "Other..." and checking "System Files." From that point forward, if you wish to search for system files, you hit Cmd-Opt-Space, click the + sign, select the left drop-down menu, selecting "System Files," selecting the right drop-down menu, choosing "include," and entering your search query, and then sorting through the mess of files that appears for what you want. Yuck!
I saved the System Files + include search query by clicking the Save button in the filters bar (why isn't it in the File menu as well so that there is consistency?) and then created a Quicksilver trigger so that Cmd-Opt-Space opens up the System Files.savedsearch, and then I can search system files just by entering the search query, selecting the "System Files.savedSearch" button after Finder decides that I really wanted to search "This Mac," and then sorting through the mess of files for what I want. It's still really tedious, but it's less so than the default option.
How did I search for system files in Tiger? Easy: I invoked Spotlight with Cmd-Space, entered the search query, and if I needed the extra functionality, selected "Show All," where I was presented with a nice, clean, organized interface that separated files by type. In this sense, Apple has really taken us quite a few steps backwards in usability, and it is highly disappointing and really quite shocking. It's like we were eating cake before, and now we have to eat dry biscuits. I sincerely hope Apple addresses this very soon, and that enough people contact Apple about this so that they get on in sooner.

  • 10.5 Finder search windows no longer find files!!!!

We have a new X Serve with OS 10.5 Server and Three Macs running OS 10.5 Family pack. The X Serve holds all of our work files. The other Macs are simply work stations. Up until recently we have been able to search the X Serve for files by typing in a 5 digit job number. (All of our jobs are saved in this manner) But starting last Thursday, the search windows return no results. We have double checked that the server is checked and that we're searching the right location. We can even go and manually retrieve the file IF we know what it's called and what folder it's in. Even when we are looking at the file, residing in the folder, typing the file's name in the search window results in "0 items". The file is there! I can can find it, why can't Leopard?

I would suggest that you post your question in the [Xserve forum|http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=854].

  • Install Windows XP in Leopard WITHOUT Boot Camp - No More Disk Error

For those of you having problems installing Windows XP in Boot Camp because of the formatting screen never showing up and then the system restarting with the dreaded:
Press any key to boot from CD .....
    Disk Error
    Press any key to restart
I too spent many frustrating hours trying to find a solution that worked. I searched these threads, tried many of the solutions suggested here and elsewhere, including recreating the Windows CD without a specific file, using the FreeDOS boot CD (couldn't ever get it to work, though I understand some people have had success), Reinstalling Leopard and trying again, dancing around the laptop with incense three times counter clockwise while chanting the name of my childhood pet... etc.
I FOUND A NEW SOLUTION!!!! A much easier solution!!!!
For anyone who is having this problem and is planning to run virtualization software.
(Something that let's you run Windows from inside Leopard)
    SKIP BOOT CAMP ALTOGETHER!!!
USE VMware Fusion to install Windows.
I decided to try a different approach entirely and did a completely fresh install of Leopard (not sure if that was necessary or not but with everything else I had been trying I wanted to clean it up anyhow) and then installed the 30 day trial version of Fusion w/ the unlock key VMware emailed me.
I entered my information and Windows product key into Fusion's "Easy Install" Interface, clicked install, and about 30 minutes later I was browsing around in XP.
I HIGHLY recommend this option for anyone having difficulty with the formatting screen not showing up. I have a Bachelors Degree in Information Systems and still spent the better part of 2 days working on this boot camp problem, including numerous hours with the higher tier of apple's tech support. I suspect that those of us having this problem may have an OEM or systembuilder copy of XP... but that is for Apple to deal with - not me, I have better things to do with my time.
If you are planning to run Windows from within Leopard anyhow, just buy Fusion and to **** with the hassle.
You can go to VMware's website and get a 30 day evaluation copy to see if this will work for you before you decide if you want to purchase it, they will email you the unlock key.
Best of luck, hope this saves someone some time!

For what it's worth, I've used the OEM version (copper disk), Select version (bulk license), and an NFR (partner program) version of XP Pro with SP2 and they all worked. On my MacBook Pro's I use boot camp to split the disk in two, reboot using the Windows CD, and pick the partition to format it.
Apple states that you need a full version of Windows, and the OEM versions are slightly different from the commercial versions, but both should work. On my Mac Pro, I created a 3-disk OS X RAID-0, and left the 4th disk alone. I rebooted with the Windows CD and installed Windows to the 4th disk without Bootcamp at all. Once Windows was installed, I used the Leopard disk to install the Bootcamp drivers. The Mac side has no Bootcamp installation but I can still choose between the volumes by holding down the option key at boot time or by setting the startup volume in the OS X Startup disk preference pane.
The solution to use virtualization, unfortunately, will not work for many situations where graphics are involved. Most current major products, such as AutoCAD, 3dsMax, and so forth, will not run properly or at all without specific DirectX 9 or OpenGL support. To date both Parallels and VMWare do not completely support DirectX or OpenGL.

There is a part about how to enable Spotlight searching on shares.
Spotlight provides more reliable results when remote users search a server volume with Spotlight searching enabled. Important: This change takes effect when you enable Spotlight searching on a sharepoint. In order to take advantage of this improvement on a sharepoint where you have already enabled Spotlight searching, disable Spotlight searching, save, re-enable Spotlight searching, and save again. The sharepoint will remain online during this process, but Spotlight searching will be unavailable for a short time while the index is rebuilt.

  • Final Cut Pro search window does not SORT.

I am an editor and I use Final Cut Pro everyday. I recently had to upgrade to LION because of a wonderful Quicktime update that corrupts
video codec files on Snow Leopard. So now that I have LION I can actually edit again. But, when I try to import files into Final Cut the
search window wont sort my files by date, name, etc...
It wont actually sort by anything. Every other program works fine for that, mainly After Effects. I have to manually go find files that I used
to give a certain naming system to because I could find them easily by typing in one word.
I also cannot search the Network anymore at my office which is a real pain. We dump all our finished projects onto a huge server. Now
when I need to find an old file I have to know the exact date it was made or else I have to go searching through every folder in our server.
Any body know of any way to fix these issues without having to rewrite code which I really don't want to do with my company computer.
Also our IT people refuse to learn anything at all about MAC computers which is SO helpful...

Im not sure what you are referring to. Maybe I didn't explain the problem correctly.
Final Cut seems as if it is not indexing the files. Most of the time it won't even show me dates (modified, created, etc...) just dashes. Then if I  do what you are describing and try to sort it at all it stays in the same exact order. I can't even sort alphabetically.

  • I just upgraded to Lion and now cannot add attachments to my emails in Safari or use the search window.  What gives?

I had been holding off upgrading to Lion because of the bad press, but discovered that I could no longer receive email on my Mac because my iPhone had been moved to iClound by an Apple tech when it had to be replaced, and my Snow Leopard version wouldn't support iCloud.  So I upgraded to Lion and immediately began having trouble.  First I was told that several of my software applications were incompatible and had been removed.  Then I discovered that Safari (apparently the latest version 5.1.3) had lost functionality.  I can't attach anything to my emails and the search window is grayed out and inoperable. Is there a fix or do I need to retreat to Snow Leopard?  Bob Kellam

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
    As Guest, test. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on some Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.) Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Why does "enclosing folder" not work from the SEARCH window?

    I do a command+F search.
Command+2 to view as list rather than groups
and then sort by date modified.
When I find the file/folder I want I'd really like to do a command+[up arrow] which in the GO menu is a valid command.
Why does this work in finder windows but not in the search window?
I'm not using spotlight, just the good old command+F
This used to work in Sherlock 1 [using command+E] and when you opened the enclosing window, the file was already hi-lighted, faster to locate and saved mousing.

You'll note that in the Go menu that command is grayed out meaning it's not active in the search results display.
If you upgrad to Leopard then you can go to the Finder's View menu and select "Show Path Bar." The full path to any selected item in the Finder's window will be displayed in a path bar in the lower portion of the window. You can then double-click on any displayed folder to open a window on that folder.

  • How do I customize the toolbars to put the Navigation and Menu toolbars on the SAME line? I want to maximize browser window space on my laptop.

I want to keep my browser tools very minimalistic so as to maximize the browser window space on my small laptop screen. I only need the navigation and menu toolbars, plus a Google search window. I'd like to put them all on the same line on the toolbar. Right now the navigation toolbar defaults to sit below the menu bar.
Is there any way to combine them on one line? Thanks.

  • Why search window so tiny?

I am using Reader9 with Acrobat to search the index of a collection of pdf's.  The Search Results window
on my computer is about 3 inches high and is  quite adequate.  On a friends computer doing the same task, the window is only about one half inch tall which means the results can't be inspected to see if they are of interest.
I can't find a setting that would enlarge the window.  The option to drag the sides or corners of the search panel
(not the search window) is useful in reducing, not enlarging the search window.  What am I missing? It
doesn't seem logical that a half inch window would have been designed in on purpose.

Yes, I'll check the resolution. In the meantime, another clue - My computer using Acrobat Pro 9 and no reader has the large search results window. My friends computer
using Acrobat 7 and Reader 9 shows a different search panel, that is, the wording and spacing at the top is different and takes up half the panel., leaving
less space for the search results window.  It appears that this different wording originates from Acrobat 7.  Can anyone with Acrobat 7 comment on the
size of their search results window?

  • HT6114 Can't save downloads to existing files??  In the "save as" box I use the little "search" window to locate where I want to put a new file but when found the location file does not operate.  And dropdown menu says "save to online acct"

When I try to save an emailed-to-me document to an existing file on my hard drive by using the little "search" window the recipient file is inactive and does not open to recieve the document I want to save (nothing happens when I click on it and it's a subdued color).
If I click through my files manually by starting on the desktop and working my way to the location of the recipient file I can save.
This takes a lot of time and is DRIVING ME CRAZY!
Please tell me I've just missed something obvious that can be fixed in a jiffy!?

OMG!!  It also happens when I try to open a file from inside a program like Adobe Reader.  If I use the little corner search window all the files are inoperable.

  • When I launch Firefox/Mozilla it comes u; with a Yahoo Search window. My older Firefox versions opened with MyEarthlink as my start page. Even designating Mozilla as my default browser still brings up Yahoo. What gives?

Downloaded 3.6 and when I clicked on Mozilla icon, it loaded with Yahoo Search page and not as my previous Mozilla browser. To get to Earthlink, I have to type the URL in the Yahoo search window; same with any other URL. Before, I had a URL window above the browser page. • 10.9.2 - New Documents open to a search window . . .

After upgrading to 10.9.2, every time I open Pages, TextEdit, etc . . . I get a this annoying window that is a hybrid Finder / Search window. I have to either search for an existing document, press "done" in the bottom right, or "New Document" in the bottom left. This is super redundent as choosing New Document often taks you to the app's template chooser or done will guess what kind of document format I want, forcing me to go back to the template chooser anyway. It is an annoying distribution to my work flow. How do you disable this new unwelcomed feature?

I think I have this solved. I turned off File Sharing on both computers, rebooted, and turned file sharing back on.  Now Hubby's Mac can open My Mac's files.
