Search works in spotlight, but not in Mail.app

If I type in the search box in Mail, nothing happens. The same query in Spotlight works. What can I do to fix that?
G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

> I don't use the .mac address, but I guess it's a .mac account.
Still not sure what you mean. It cannot be a .Mac account if it doesn’t have a .Mac address associated with it, and your mail cannot be stored on a .Mac server if you don’t have a .Mac account... What does Mail show in Preferences > Accounts > Account Information > Account Type?
Anyway, I don’t know how to solve the problem in your case. When searching in Spotlight doesn’t work, the problem can be fixed by re-creating the Spotlight database. When searching in Spotlight works but Entire Message searches in Mail don’t, re-creating Mail’s index usually fixes the problem, but not always and I don’t know why.
Try this to try to identify the problem:
1. Open /Applications/Utilities/Console.
2. From the File menu, choose either Open Console Log, or Open System Log, or both, so that Console displays the contents of both system.log and console.log.
3. Reproduce the problem and look at the bottom of the Console windows for messages that might be written there as a result. They may provide some clues.

You may try setting up Mail again from scratch and importing your mail back, but I don’t know whether that will work either:
1. If you have a .Mac account and .Mac synchronization of Mail data is enabled either in Mail > Preferences > General or in System Preferences > .Mac, disable it before proceeding.
2. Quit Mail if it’s running.
3. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/. Move (not copy) the entire Mail folder out of there, to the Desktop.
4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop.
5. Open Mail and set it up again from scratch. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and check that everything works fine.
6. You’ll have to re-configure all your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
7. If Mail works fine now and you had any messages stored in local mailboxes, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Mail for Mac OS X as the data format, and follow the instructions to import your mail from the old Mail folder that’s now on the Desktop. Import the Mailboxes folder first, then each of the POP-username@mailserver account folders.
8. If .Mac synchronization of Mail data was enabled at the beginning, enable it again, go to System Preferences > .Mac > Advanced, click Reset Sync Data, and choose the appropriate options to reset the Mail data stored on the .Mac server with the data locally stored on the computer, i.e. sync data must flow from the computer to the .Mac server.
As a result of doing the above, some messages may be duplicated. Andreas Amann’s Mail Scripts has a Remove Duplicates script that you may find useful.
Do with the imported mail whatever you wish. You may move the messages anywhere you wish and get rid of the imported mailboxes afterwards.
If all is well and you don’t miss anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • Case insensitive search working in dev but not in prod

    Hello All,
I had set the CASE_SENSITIVE_CHARACTER_COMPARISON parameter as OFF in NQSConfig.ini file for enabling the case insensitive search in OBIEE.
This setup is letting me do the case insensitive search in Dev env but the same doesnt work in prod env. I tried pointing both prod and dev rpd to same prod db.
With same db also, case insensitive search doesnt work in prod env.
Any idea for which other configuration I can look for.
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks Stijin. I had seen this post earlier. Case insensitive search works fine after setting the value for NLS_SORT and NLS_COMP in production RPD but the other report with distinct clause starts failing. Not sure about the reason.
Saw this comment from you in that post:
The only compromise solution we could find was to "cache" the column value we wanted to use in insensitive searches. These were mainly used in "show all choices" while setting prompts. Other than that there isn't much you can do in an Oracle database.
Can you please tell me how to implement the above.

  • HT1694 I have recently updated my iPad and cannot access my mail account (I can access it through Microsoft) but not the mail app that's on iPad.. It continually keeps saying cannot verify account or password.

I have updated my pad and now cannot access my Email through mail on the ipad (I can access it on the internet via Microsoft ) I have tried changingassword and server to pop3... But nothing working that if read from ppl. Please help.. As I love using mail on the pad making it much faster and easier to view my mail. I don't wanna go back to logging in over the web....   Please help :)

When resetting your password, did you turn on two-step authentication? If you did, the Mail App isn't compatible with it - either, you need to create an application password and use that to log in using the iPhone Mail App, (instead of your Microsoft Account password) or disable two-step authentication to make it work.

  • IMAP question - message showing up in iOS but not in Mail.app - why?

I set up an account in Mail.app Version 5.2 (1257). It's an IMAP account linked to a Gmail account.
Just now I saw a (1) indicator that a new mail had arrived. But when I clicked on the account's Inbox there were no messages there.
I also checked on my iPhone, which also uses IMAP for the same Gmail account, and I can see the message and read it.
I went back to Mail.app but it's still not there. So I manually selected Mailbox > Get New Mail > account name. After doing this the (1) indicator went away and there is still no mail in the Inbox.
But the message is still there when looking via both my iPhone and iPad.
I also tried closing and opening a new View Window, but it didn't help.
Finally I quit Mail and restarted it and could see the message.
But what gives? Why couldn't I see the message in Mail.app on my iMac without restarting Mail?
    Thanks,
    doug

I'm not sure there is a setting for that. I don't see one anywhere.
But remember - the reason I knew there was a waiting message to begin with was because the dock indicator displayed a number and next to the account's Inbox was a (1) in parentheses. So it must have checked for mail. The message just wasn't there until I quit Mail and started again.
Anyway, thanks. I'll just see if this happens again. Maybe it was a one time rare bug.
    Thanks,
    doug

  • Attachments visible with internet mail, but not with Mail.app

Others have written before about this question, but I don't find a satisfying answer (that would have to come from the Apple people themselves). I received emails that contained several attachments (pdf files), as visible from the size of the messages and the raw source, but only one or two of the attachments showed in the Mail application (version 4.5), and sometimes there was even no body text. I was puzzled and went to the web application of my provider to look at the same messages. EVERYTHING was there! so I decided to transfer the messages again to myself, and miraculously everything was there as well in Mail.app.
Now, is this a weakness of Mail.app, a wrong use of attachments by the sender or what else? Anyway, it is annoying, because I wonder how many attachments I have never seen.
Does anyone know of a solution, please?

Okay, I found the answer if anyone is having the same problem. The Mail POP settings on the Mac for the various Accounts I had were outdated. They were just for Dial-Up. Here is the link for the entire ATT page that deals with High Speed and iPhone connections, and the part in particular that helped me get it going.
    http://help.att.net/docs/use/email/gen/prbxxx_xxx_mail-news-settings.htm?area=customeremail-osxmail&platform=OSMAC&faqcounter#isps
Note: Worldnet support is limited to providing the iPhone E-mail Configuration Settings. For all other iPhone technical support issues, refer the customer to: att.com/wireless
Note: If you are using Mac OS 10.x, set up Mac OS X Mail to access your AT&T Worldnet Service e-mail.
    E-mail Settings:
    Mail Server Type: POP3
    Incoming Mail (POP): ipostoffice.worldnet.att.net
    Outgoing Mail (SMTP): imailhost.worldnet.att.net
Note: If you are using Netscape Mail, enter your other ISP's outgoing e-mail server. If you are not sure what the SMTP server name is, contact your non-AT&T Worldnet Service ISP.
Ensure that the option My server requires authentication is checked.
User name or POP name: Enter the full e-mail address in the User Name field. For example: [email protected] or [email protected]
Ensure that the option Always connect to this account using is selected, and Local Area Network is chosen from the drop-down menu on the Connections tab.
Ensure that secure connection (SSL) is enabled and set to port number 465 for SMTP.
Ensure that secure connection (SSL) is enabled and set to port number 995 for POP3.
    Cheers, Charlie

  • Junk mail arrives in iPhone 5s mail app but not MBP mail app

This is a strange observation and I am wondering if others have experienced this...
My iPhone is a 5s running iOS v7.1.  When I access my email accounts via my iPhone each day, I am greeted with a slew of junk mail on a daily basis (typically Monday thru Friday).  Not a new thing right?  However, when I access those same email accounts from my MacBook Pro I never receive any junk mail (typically Saturday and Sunday).  In fact, junk mail never even appears in my Junk folder on the MBP.  Now, during the week when I do receive the junk mail on my iPhone, I wait until I return home and open the mail app on my MBP whereupon all of the junk mail received on my iPhone NOW shows up in Mail on my MBP THEN automatically moves into the junk folder.  So, my suspicion is that spammers have now determined how to identify mail access between devices (iPhone vs. MBP).  I am guessing they may be capitalizing the the inability of the iPhone mail app to filter junk mail.
Am I imagining this or has anyone else experienced this scenario?  Many thanks.

    Hello rayalamx
If the Mail app is not opening, then I would remove the email accounts. Open mail to see if that resolves the issue and then start adding the accounts back in.

  • Search works for HTTP but not for HTTPS on site

    Hi
Both the http & https url works and you can browse the team site just fine. Search for HTTP url works fine, but fails for the https url. You get a "Sorry something went wrong" and "Unknown error". Also get the following
errors in ULS logs: "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" and this used to work 100% before.
Things tried thus far include: Clearing the blobcache; clearing config cache; deleting and re-adding the alternate access mapping for HTTPS; checked certificate and bindings on all servers in the farm for site.
2013 Farm Environment: SharePoint 2013 SP1 with 2 web frontends & 2 App servers on Server2012 using SQL2012 failover Cluster
    Any help greatly appreciated!!

  • Set up synch with Exchange - works in Entourage but not in Mail!

    Hi all,
In Entourage I've been able to connect to my Exchange 2003 server at the office. Apart from the certificate warning it works just ok.
But now, how do I set Mail to accept the same connection?
In other words which settings from Entourage go where in the Mail account settings?
    So where's Mail's equivalent of:
    - Domain
    - The DAV 443 port setting
    etc
Mail just keeps reporting that it cannot find the server.
    Marco

Entourage uses a connection to Exchange via settings established under OWA (Outlook Web Access). ActiveSync is different than that and so is Blackberry access. Each company can set up ActiveSync differently, so I can't tell you what to configure, but generally you should be able to put in your OWA (Entourage) settings and set up ActiveSync with very minor modifications. For example, your OWA (Entourage) server might be: https://exchange.somecompany.com/owa or similar. It is likely that your IT folks set up ActiveSync access on the same server. In that case, the server entry for the iPhone might be simply: exchange.somecompany.com
Keep in mind that Exchange 2007 has a feature where the email address is used to "find" the server, but if your company is running Exchange 2003, that feature is not available. This is likely confusing some people on how to set things up, too.
OWA (Outlook Web Access), OMA (Outlook Mobile Access) and (EAS) Exchange ActiveSync are all different services. For the iPhone, we will configure for EAS even if all of these products are running on the same server or not.
The other thing that I note in some posts is that people are having issues with certificates. If the company signs their own certificates, then that certificate will need to be installed on the iPhone. If the certificate is purchased from EnTrust, Verisign or other certificate authority (CA), then the iPhone will likely not need the company certificate imported to the device.
    I hope this helps someone.

  • Setting up new account works in Outlook, but not in Mail

I set up a new account in Mail just like I have done in the past, but it refuses to find the test mail I sent it. I can see the test mail by checking it through my ISPs web mail program, and I can see the mail even by setting up an account on Windows in Outlook Express, but Mail can't find it.
I set up the new account EXACTLY as I had set up accounts in the past, obviously with different names and passwords, but no result.
You can see a screenshot of my Accounts summary at http://www.wordpix.ca/mailscreenshot.jpg
    Thanks

    Stu,
I am not sure you want to leave that screenshot up for long, but hopefully we can resolve, soon.
Are you certain that the full email address is needed as the Username entry, or might only using the true Username portion of the address, i.e. "cindy"? Mail is very rigorous about the form of the Username, and does extract it from the email address, as some mail clients may do.

  • Imap smtp settings work in thunderbird but not in mail

Hello. One of my imap accounts can't send mail from apple's mail anymore (since updating to 10.8). The exact same settings (Server, Port, Security, Authentification, User Name) on the same computer work in thunderbird. Any idea?
    Thanks

Who is your ISP? Have you checked to see whether the form of Username required is only the Username in front of the @ in your email address, or the entire email address needs to be entered as the Username. Mail is very explicit, and never guesses which form is needed.
Are you now using 10.6 -- your system info needs updating if so.

  • Exact same request works in browser but not in my app!!!

Hello all, I have an application that posts requests through an https connection to a web server. When everything goes well, the server is supposed to send me an xml file. Once my String is encoded and ready to be sent, it looks something like this:
InputSegments=%3c%3fxml+version%3d%221.0%22+encoding%3d%22UTF-8%22%3f%3e%3cCNCustTransmitToEfx+So when I send it, I receive an error from the server saying that the request is incorrect. But when I copy paste the request String to the browser, it works great!!! I tried to change requestMethod to GET, but I still get the error message from the server. So I can't figure out what is wrong here... I am posting my function hoping that somebody will be able to help me:

    Alex

I solved the problem, I dont know if it's a good way to do this, but here's what I've done: Instead of opening a connection to the server and the send the request throug the stream, I open the connection and pass the request next to the server's address:
            xmlResponse = new StringBuffer();
            objUrl = new URL(securedUrl + "?InputSegments=" + URLEncoder.encode(xmlRequest, "UTF-8") + "&cmdSubmit=Submit");
urlc = (HttpsURLConnection)objUrl.openConnection();Anyway thank you all for your help!

  • Webcam works in JMStudio but not in JMF apps (Linux)

    Hi everybody,
I have successfully installed the Linux drivers (it's a Logitech Quickcam Express), and registered the webcam with jmfregistry. It works perfectly in jmstudio, both if selecting the "capture" menu or just opening an url as "v4l://0".
However, I cannot succeed in creating a datasource for this camera in my application. I can get the MediaLocator of the device, its list of formats, but when calling to Manager.createDataSource(), a "NoDataSourceException" is thrown.
    Any hint, please?
    Thanks a lot in advance.

    Hi again,
I have also tested the JMF code samples, e.g. VideoTransmit, and I get the same problem.
It seems that only jmstudio is capable of using the camera!!!
    Help, please!

  • Lost messages appear in Spotlight but not in any mail folders

The first week of June, PowerBook G4 crashed and wouldn't start up again while using Mail. Went to the Genius Bar, they said a corrupt mail file probably brought down the system-we did an archive install and transferred all the messages to Entourage and then re-imported them back to Mail.
When this happened all "sent mail" from Feb 1 until the June 3rd re-install disappeared. I just accepted this. Today, when searching for stuff in Spotlight, some of these "sent mail" messages turned up in Spotlight and when clicked they display. It appears that what I have sent during those missing months is avialable in Spotlight but not to me in Mail.
I have no idea where these messages actually are and how to get them back into a folder in Mail?
Any thoughts. I have the lastest update and have done the usual of Disk Utility, Repair Permissions, Rebuilt my folders, etc.

The Archive & Install did not transfer all existing
Mail.app mailboxes/messages to the new install which
required using Entourage to import all existing
    Mail.app data?
If so, the Entourage import does not delete existing
    data - it imports only.
Have you deleted the archived previous system
    folder?
    Something to try.
Quit Mail first and using the Finder, go to Home >
Library > Mail. Copy the Mail folder and place the
copy on the Desktop for backup purposes.
Using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail >
Envelope Index. Delete the Envelope Index file and
    empty the Trash.
Launch Mail and you will be prompted to import all
mailboxes available within the Mail folder at Home >
    Library > Mail.
Select OK and allow the process to complete. This
isn't importing anything but replacing the deleted
Envelope Index file and re-indexing all mailboxes.
After the archive and install, Mail crashed immediately upon opening when using the former Mail folder and its contents. The only way to get Mail to open was to export to Entourage and re-import into Mail. Mail then opened but Feb-June sent messages were missing.
I assumed one or more of the messages was corrupt and was what brought down the system. I just accepted that I would miss those messages. Then in a Spotlight search, the messages started turning up but with no idea of where they are residing.
I did delete after two weeks the previous system folder.
I did try what you asked by making a new envelope index but it didn't help.
I am at the Apple Store in Tokyo right now. Someone who converses in English understands my problem but has no answers.

  • Yahoo works on iPhone mail but not iPad2 mail

I have an Mac, Google and a Yahoo mail account.  The Mac and Google work on the MBP, iPad2 and iPhone with both the mail app and via Safari log in.  Yahoo works on the MBP and iPhone via Mail and Safari but does not work on the iPad2 via the Mail App but wil work on the iPad2 via Safari.  I have deleted the account from my iPad2 and tried to reinstall it but i keep getting a message that the "Server is not available, please try again later".  This is the same error message I got from my iPad Mail app before I tried deleting the Yahoo account and reinstalling it.  This problem started about a week ago.  The only added App was an EMail Client on the MBP - Inky.
MBP is on 10.8.2, OS X Safari is 6.0.2, iPhone & iPad2 are on IOS 6.0.1,
Any ideas would be appreciated,  Thanks,

  • After installing the new Yosemite OS on my iMac I can no longer send email. I can receive email, but not send. I use gmail and can send email on the gmail (google) site, but not on "mail" on my iMac. Any others with this problem? What should we do?

After installing the new Yosemite OS on my iMac I can no longer send email. I can receive email, but not send. I use gmail and can send email on the gmail (google) site, but not on "mail" on my iMac. Any others with this problem? What should we do?

My gmail, which is correctly configured for Mail with gmail SMTP and Google IMAP, works for awhile on Mail, which I leave open while working on other applications. But several times a day I get msg from Google: "We recently blocked a sign-in attempt to your Google Account" . . . and requiring me to verify my account details, re-enter passwords, confirm security settings (or change them from "disable" to "enable less secure methods" and so on). In Mail I also have tried "taking all accounts online", and re-entering my gmail password inside Mail account settings. These steps successfully re-set comms between gmail and Mail ... for awhile, then it happens again. Enough occurrences over a work day that I just quit Mail and revert to accessing gmail directly. Apple Care advisor and an Apple knowledge base article say that Apple can't deal with this, as gmail is third-party app, and they refer me to gmail, and so far I've found nothing helpful there.
From today I also have several instances of a window saying "Mail has unexpectedly closed" and asking me to Re-open it.
I also use Yahoo mail, which stops working with Mac Mail at the same time as gmail, but I do not receive notices to re-verify from Yahoo.
I recently upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite. The Mail problem happened occasionally with Mavericks but is far more frequent with Yosemite.
